Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Misanthropic Humanitarian]

zz pet thread cover 6 25.jpg

Soul? They are all soul. How can you reject a ginger like that? (I'll let you in on a little secret. I haven't been able to say no for 34 years. Thank you Mrs. MH)

So everybody, thank you for stopping by on the first Saturday of Summer to see what's happening at the AoS Pet Thread. As usual, a little of this, a little of that. Check out the happenings.

Pet and Animal News

Do dogs go to heaven sign debate.

From a Moron contributor

So my dad sent me this back in '09, and I thought it was hilarious.

But are these photos real? Hint: If you look closely at the photos of the Catholic Church sign, the cars in the background are a dead giveaway.

Real or not - and I'm sure the horde would agree - 1) of course all of God's creatures go to heaven, and 2) does not disprove the reality that Presbyterians, for the most part, are priggish twats.

Who cares, it's still funny!

Meet the Pet Morons

zz persnickety.jpg

Let's start today's parade of pets with Persnickety's Boris the Cat. After years of rescuing older cats Persnickety adopted this guy as a kitten.

zz jo moron.jpg

Meet Guinness. Jo liked the idea that her dog uses rawhides as cigars and not the real thing.

zz Scarlett.jpg

Say hello to Scarlett & Duchess the Blood Hounds. Lurker Rebecca submitted this photo. These dogs and their granddogger are/were search and rescue dogs.

zz david simpson.jpg

We have a cat wrangler among us. David sent this photo in. He has 5 cats he was able to rustle up Hector, Telli & Artemis for this.

zz gilligan.jpg

Colorado Terp submitted this photo of Gilligan & Nimrod. They look comfortable while underachieving. Thanks for the photo.

zz liz.jpg

Liz's Yorkie originally name was Maggie. However a little kid on a bike said hey Mom that looks like a bug. Meet bug. I would have named her Fang, but that's me.

zz mike k.jpg

Mike K would like to introduce his rescue dog Juliet to the Horde. This Basset came from a Basset rescue group.

zz confuzzled.jpg

Moron Confuzzled submitted this photo of his cats Angel & Oreo. Per Confuzzled they are quite the handful but wouldn't trade them in for the world. They look like fun.

zz anderew batten.jpg

Meet Snicket & Mr. Jack. These guys own lurker Andrew. Andrew didn't say much about them but their expressions say quite a bit. Thanks for the photo.

zz levin.jpg

Meet Lucy the Aussie. Levin embarrassed her by taking this picture after a dip. Nice looking dog. Thanks for sharing Levin.

zz creeper.jpg

Our last photo today is of Creeper's Sasha. Unfortunately Creeper had to put his dog down recently. Here's a photo of her as a pup meeting a new friend for the first time. Pups and mirrors are so cute. We are so sorry for your loss Creeper.

Thank you for stopping by. If you have a pet photo or something interesting you would like to submit, you can reach us at petmorons at gee mail dot com.

3 Levin, your Aussie looks like it came from the same litter as my Aussie.

The best part when they come out of the water is when they jump on your lap. They know exactly what they're doing.

4 I need a bit of advice from the Pet Horde. We need to get our 6 month old pup spayed. The vet says she would need to be pretty much sedentary for 2 weeks after. So, how in the hell do you keep a very active puppy who loves to run and play sedentary? Thanks in advance.

Posted by: Swifty at June 25, 2016 02:48 PM (5T2hT)

5 You don't keep them sedentary, you keep them as calm as possible.

Don't let them jump is A big thing.

6 Swifty, Not a vet and not an informed opinion, but after our beagle was spayed at around the same age, she was back to her old self within 1-2 days.

Assuming they actually did take her ovaries out and weren't lying to us.

Yeah, two weeks seems a bit much. I would think a cone of shame, and a room in which to be isolated from other pets and things that otherwise cause excitement.

Posted by: BurtTC at June 25, 2016 02:56 PM (Dj0WE)

8 Swifty, when I got mine spayed. My vet gave me sedatives and painkillers to keep my hyper puppy calm and sleepy. It mostly worked excepted she hated the cone and when she was awake she would spend all her energy trying to destroy it. Ask your vet of that is an option for your doggie.

12 Hey MisHum, I think creeper's Sasha got a reprieve from the vet at the last minute? Unless something happened after that.

Also, creeper is female. She said that Sasha was actually her husband's dog, and her husband passed away earlier this year, sadly.

Posted by: bluebell at June 25, 2016 03:00 PM (805dc)

13 When we got our latest pup Maggy she had just been spayed and the stitches were still very visible. There was no way we could keep her quiet for two hours let alone two weeks. She did not seem to suffer any from that.

Incidentally I wanted to name her Abby but my wife refused. I am sure the horde would know in a hot second why my wife didn't want me to name her Abby.

I have had every cat I have owned for the past 10 years neutered, both male and female. We didn't get any kind of instructions like that. We brought the cats home the next day and usually they were quite on their own for 1 or 2 days then they started moving around and were pretty much normal after 3 days.

The cone is only needed if your pet insists on licking/biting the sutures a lot.

I was concerned my cat was nosing around her wound site too much so I put a collar on her.

BIG mistake. The cat nearly tore down the house and killed herself. The collar was off as soon as I could catch her.

So skip the collar unless absolutely necessary.

26 The Retro-Kid is deployed and I'm watching Caliber, the Flat-Coated Retriever for 6 months.

He escaped through an open gate Weds. evening.

You ever try to find a flat black ghilley-suit-haired dog at night?

Ever wander the neighborhood at night yelling "CALIBER! CALIBER!"??

Apparantly, an disheveled older citizen, yelling CALIBER! at night throughout the neighborhood, and shining a high-powered LED flashlight in peoples yards, is deemed suspicious, and someone will call the cops. Who knew?

After an interview with Officer Tactical ("to provide my identification"), I found the dipshit sitting on the porch.

(pro tip: want to be taken seriously as a cop? Don't be 22. Don't still have acne).

I literally puked twice in street, terrified that I'd have to email The Captain and report Caliber as MIA.

I suspect the public puking contributed to police call...

28 Hi bluebell! Day one just wrapped up and I did OK - think I'm probably in 2nd or 3rd place. One of the reasons to come out here was to get a chance to use the new electronic scoring system - it's cool but really changes the way you have to manage things during the match. Very distracting at first. Two more matches tomorrow.

Hot too!

Yup....just turn 'em loose and watch their sutures and they will be good to go. One cat I have is kinda feral and she hauled ass outta the car as soon as she got back. My dog hauled ass around the yard, drank a ton of water and went and took a nap. The vet was all like "put this cream on them" and "here's some pain pills" all BS. Just check up on them as you normally would and they will be fine.

36 I just had two new big pigs delivered today and the person we bought them from is a vet tech and she said she's seen over a thousand Great Pyrenees and our big boy Patrick Henry is the biggest she's ever seen.

I knew he is a big ol beast but that's saying something right there.

These pigs she brought are a year old and 500# easy, but her three year old daughter has them so tamed they let them out of the pen and follow them around the farm. Essentially pets.

37 Our little dog was MAD and sort of quiet for a couple of days. We kept her confined to the kitchen to keep her quiet for a few days and the bet had a cone on her for about a week I think.

We adopted WeaselDog from the City animal shelter and she had NOT been spayed, much to our later surprise. She was such a snarling little mess while she was there they couldn't do a proper exam I guess. The shelter people were very good about it and paid for the whole procedure at our vet.

I can relate. Black dogs/cats are impossible to find at night. I've taken to putting a leash on one of my son's dogs when he is staying here whenever I take him outside.
Even with the house entirely surrounded by fencing, he is a little black dog who can Houdini his way through any gap.
I had tried using a white handkerchief around his neck, but in seconds the second Lab dog had it off. So leash it is.

Posted by: washrivergal at June 25, 2016 03:15 PM (CFc5L)

39 L, I've only said "you scared the shit out of me, buddy" about a 100 times in the last 2 days. Checked for open doors constantly, too. Paranoia reigns.

Nailed the gate shut 5 minutes after I got back.

Screw it, I'll get in the dog yard through the house, and mow with the old reel mower I can lift over the fence.

Since it turned out ok, that was hilarious. I had a similar experience with my mom's missing dog years ago, and we were all actually drunk out looking for her but no one called the cops on us. There's more to the story, but it turned out well too. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it to have these goofy animals, but that thought passes quickly.

One of the best TZ episodes ever. If it doesn't make you cry you have a heart of stone. It was written by Earl Hamner, Jr., who later created "The Waltons".

PRO TIP:
WeaselCat v.2 has twice had to wear a cone and she hates it. She freaks out and runs around in a panic. I thought to keep her in the shower (with the glass doors closed) it's just large enough for a litter box and a little bed and her food and water and much better than trying to keep her in a cage. Seems to work well if your setup at home allows.

They are high maintenance cats, or I spoil them.

70 Incidentally I wanted to name her Abby but my wife refused. I am sure the horde would know in a hot second why my wife didn't want me to name her Abby.

I don't.

I do know that we had a gerbil named Abby, when I was very small. She died, as gerbils do. Many years later, when my youngest sister was born, my parents named her Abigail, completely forgetting at the time that we had once had a gerbil by that name. They were kind of embarrassed to realize that they had reused a pet name, I think, when Mom remembered a year or two after the birth.

The ones that stuck with me:

How To Serve Man Is a Cook Book
The little girl who fell out of bed into a different dimension.

97 Pet story for the week:

(Skip this if you don't like sad)

My dear friend and neighbor had to put down her best friend Cairo this week. A very sweet, regal Borzoi.
I got a panicked call a little after 0600, and was already putting on pants and a gun before she calmed down a bit. "Can you come over and help put Cairo in the car?"
He had collapsed, and wouldnt/couldn't move. He had a vet appt scheduled that morning for heart x-rays, as he'd been weak and lethargic lately, with not much appetite.
So, I went over, sat on the floor with him for a minute, then scooped him up as gently as I could, and placed him in the car. He was a little confused, but not in pain at all.
Turns out, a large tumor was pressing against his heart (and I guess some other organs/nerves).
She laid with him for about an hour at the vet's office, then said her goodbyes. I think she has been preparing for it, because It seems that I've taken it much harder than her.

Silver lining :
she is already talking to friends in the Borzoi Community (?) and is looking for a rescue. Won't get a puppy because of the work involved, though.
If you want a big smile, Bing search "borzoi puppy" pics. O. M. G. Adorable.

I have the same problem. I have a Great Dane and they have short life spans too. I've only had her for a year but I think about losing her all the time. I think I will be able to handle losing her naturally as long as she doesn't suffer terribly at the end. I more worry about something tragic happening to her. I live on a hilltop and have tons of coyotes that travel in packs. They lure dogs out pretending they want to play and then you know what happens next.

She broke out of my fence the other day, and when I went looking for her she made it all the way into the distant valley and was hanging around my neighbors horses bc she probably thinks she is one. She got behind one and one nearly kicked her. Thank God she listened when I called her back.

Great Pyrenees are wonderful dogs. When I had to board mine for the first time, and she got playtime with the other dogs she became best friends with a Great Pyrenees there. She seemed sad to have to leave him when I picked her up.

122 Sadness reigns at the Octiparan compound. We said goodbye to the last of the 5 rescue Yorkies this week. They were breeders in a Kansas puppy mill living in awful conditions. We got them from a woman that rescues the dogs and drove them back to Oregon in 2008.

Spent a lot of money on them but it was worth every penny watching them come out of their shells and become loving dogs. Scratch that, become loving family members.

Their names were, Happy, Chipmunk, Sasha, Trooper, and Finessee.

I worry about that with large breeds too. The only GP I've known was the one that guarded a flock of Boer goats next to the park where I used to volunteer doing biological surveys.
The employee I worked with was scared of big dogs, but this dog would always get some ear scratchin's from me through the fence. Such a sweetpea. One time she and her goats made a break for it and got into the park. Luckily an employee who knew and liked that dog was there, and they were put back with little trouble.

He lived in SF and his wife wouldn't have a dog anywhere near her. Jack would bring his daughter for lessons and he just loved my greyhound. One day he asked if he could take her to the club with him. I said sure, so every weekend he would pick her and keep her with till he had to go back to SF. He would have the restaurant make her burgers. Besides being the club President he was also Johnny Miller's sponsor. Jack kept a picture of Johnny, my dog and himself sitting in a golf cart on his office desk.

142 Eromero, the easiest way to do that is take a pic with your phone. If you have a smart phone you can email the pic to us directly from your phone. Most phones direct you through the steps and it is relatively simple.

Outside of that option if you have a hard copy of a photograph, you'll have to scan it, save on it your pc and attach it as a file on your email and send it that way. The second way is a total pain in the neck if you have never done it before. If you don't have a smart phone, try to borrow one from a friend or family member who has one the next time they stop by to visit . The address is petmorons at the gee male dot com

147 Paired Tuxedo cats?

AC & DC

"Ayecee & Deecee". Easy to say, with clear phonic separation on the first syll Ah bull.

But my best recommendation on cat names?

Just wait, and let them kind of name themselves. Cats are great at showing quirk of personality, trait or habit, that'll end up being what'cha call them, anyway.

My two are Bonne & Scamp.

Bonnie, as my g/f is Irish (as in from Belfast), and the kitty is only 6.5 lbs, fully grown.

She's a Bonnie Wee Lass, she is!

Her brother's name is Scamp. 13 lb., Maine Coon markings and fur, w/o the size.

"Scamp". I shouldn't have to tell ya the details of how he got that moniker. Well earned though, I assure you.

They're both sweet beyond words.

Bonnie would remind you of the character from the old Foghorn Leghorn cartoons. The small one that struts around proclaiming: "I'm a Chickenhawk!". That's her, six and a half pounds of "I DECIDE!" willfull innocence.

Scamp is a big ol' softie. Just straight up mushball. But loves, loves LOVES to ambush his little sister. And, his treats. He's the Oliver Twist of kitty treats.

Big eyes, hopeful look and every vibe of his psyche looking up with "More, Please?" written plain as day across his face.

They more than earn their keep, here, just by being themselves.

Yeah, I had one that acted like I was murdering him when giving him a bath no matter how much I tried to make it a soothing and pleasant experience. Once out and dried (with a towel I threw in the drier to heat up and make it feel comfy), he'd go nuts with happiness.

155 I had decided to temporarily foster my neighbor's two cats following an apartment fire and subsequent busting by management for violation of the pet policy. I've managed to re-home one of them, but the second is still here. She's been here a month, now, and I can't keep her as I've two adopted kitties and am at my limit. So, I'm handing her back to my neighbor Monday morning and he'll promptly set her loose behind his workplace where there's a pre-existing feral cat colony.

It's too bad. She's a sweetheart. Spayed, up-to-date on shots and everything. Oh, well; I tried.

Posted by: antisocial justice beatnik at June 25, 2016 05:36 PM (jV8Mq)

156 Thanks for the suggestions. I am waiting for their proper names to come to me. The naming of cats is a serious thing...

I was considering Jeeves and Bertie, but the requisite dignity and gormlessness are lacking in this pair. They are also *cough* felines of substance *cough*. I had to donate the carriers I thoughtfully brought with me to the shelter, because they wouldn't fit. Working as a team they could probably bring down a burglar.

I need a bit of advice from the Pet Horde. We need to get our 6 month
old pup spayed. The vet says she would need to be pretty much sedentary
for 2 weeks after. So, how in the hell do you keep a very active puppy
who loves to run and play sedentary? Thanks in advance.

Posted by: Swifty at June 25, 2016 02:48 PM (5T2hT)
swifty
the puppy is not going to feel like running and playing for the first week....the second week, if you can get a pen.....and keep the puppy in there as much as possible be sure to keep the cone of shame on her too....that will keep her from ripping the stitches out. give her chew toys too....that will keep her busy.

Speaking of the end, it wasn't. The vet couldn't bring himself to put Sasha down on Thursday. Asked if I'd let him try steroids. Said he'd bought his own dog three months with a similar course last fall. I agreed.

Typical of steroids, they're working like magic, at least in the short term. I have no illusions about where we're headed. At least we've slowed the journey to the bridge a bit.
