Longtime AoSHQ Moron and all-around good guy Sean Moore penned a good piece on Hamilton's wrongheaded Tony Awards symbolism.
Sunday night’s Tony Awards were dedicated to the families and friends of the victims—49 dead and dozens injured, as of this writing—of this cowardly Jihadist’s massacre. Host James Corden began the show with a statement on the tragedy, saying, “Theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality and gender is equal, is embraced and is loved. Hate will never win. Together, we have to make sure of that. Tonight’s show stands as a symbol and celebration of that principle.” Maybe not as forceful (and certainly less profane) as what I would have said, but those are noble enough sentiments. But then, the cast of “Hamilton” did the thing that has me writing this screed about a topic I really don’t care about. They went out onstage and performed a number from the show, but they did so without their prop muskets.Like Sean, I normally couldn't care less about whatever predictably-lame gesture the arts crowd chooses to proffer at times like this, but the symbolism of the founders of this country, voluntarily disarmed, singing and dancing in response to terrorism struck me as unfortunately apt. After all, when faced with a similar problem, the actual founding fathers sent in the Navy and the Marines. Now the president's first reaction is to attack his own citizens' exercise of their civil rights rather than naming the enemy. The Pulse nightclub timeline strikingly features a gap of several hours after the shooting started in which people were held hostage inside by a lone gunman who was, at times, talking on the phone. The signals being sent by politicians and popular culture -- put down your guns, "shelter in place", worry more about using the right pronoun than the guy screaming "Allahu Akbar!" -- have tragic effects every time they come into contact with the real-world. I'm not sure how we managed this, but we've seemingly regressed as a nation from confronting Islamic terrorism with "let's roll" to "let's roll over and play dead". This will not end well.

Couple of years ago I attended a book signing by Nathaniel Philbrick, as a result of my purchasing and reading his brilliant book Bunker Hill: A City, A Siege, A Revolution, which came out in April of 2013. You'll recall that the book is all about how the culture of New England townspeople was extremely independent and tough, and very well-armed and not afraid to take a stand and fight. The book signing occurred about a year after the Boston Marathon Bombing, and was located right in the middle of progressive, limp-wristed downtown Seattle.
During the Q&A, I stood up and asked: "Mr. Philbrick, after the Boston marathon bombing and subsequent search for the perpetrators, did you consider perhaps adding an addendum to your book that discussed how it only took 237 years for the citizenry of Boston to devolve from tough, independent and well-armed individuals willing to die for their freedom to an entire city cowering in their homes, unarmed, while the police scoured their neighborhoods looking for a single wounded, unarmed 18 year-old kid?"
Like all good public speakers, Mr. Philbrick spoke for about 5 minutes once I'd finished asking the question about all sorts of topics, but he never did answer the question.

In some of the circles I frequent (generally involving discussions about the proper colors to use when painting miniature infantry), it's been noted that the "red" dyes used by the coat makers for the British Army of the time tended to be quite cheap. I was thinking of this juxtaposition, myself, today. Now, granted, I've never been targeted by a gun-toting madman in a mass shooting, but good lord. One guy with semi automatic weapons in a crowd of 200 or more ? WTF ? The people on Flight 103 were well aware they could die.
I really do think the comparison between the two is pretty telling about how this country has devolved in the last 15 years.
I sure would like to think that if I weren't mowed down in the first moments of such an attack, I would be trying to band together with some of the other people there to strategize how a few of us could take down one guy. Chairs, tables, speed, surprise, or just overwhelming numbers should have been enough. I don't know. Maybe I'm just nuts.

With the census and reapportionment every ten years, more congressional seats and electoral college votes move from the Blue States to the Red States. If the fecklessness of the Democrats results in a nuclear weapon killing off a couple of million people in New York City, that would accelerate the process. If they nuked Philadelphia, that in itself would probably flip Pennsylvania from Blue to Red.

Yep, with the caveat that the term "Brown Bess," while not a modern term per se, in its modern usage is a blanketl term for a number of designs dating from around 1730 up until 1820 or so (post-1800 is out of my area of expertise such as it is). The earliest pattern marks a distinct break stylistically and structurally from what came before and the patterns after it are all obvious developments of the earliest pattern (they got progressively less ornate/pretty, lighter, shorter, and stronger), so there is good basis for treating them as a single group. (We'd consider all the M-16s as a single design despite all the changes since the 1960s, right?)

I've got a .50 flintlock rifle, Lancaster school, that I built from a blank (not a kit) back in high school/college, and a couple barrels that I hope to get stocked soon. One will be a close copy of really, really neat original early mountain rifle (walnut stock and iron furniture but rev war era architecture) and the other barrel, a left over from a failed second attempt at building a rifle, may go into a loose interpretation of the "Brass Barrel Gun."
I've also got a pistol barrel and a somewhat ersatz copy of a 1851 Navy revolver that went through a housefire and that I have never fixed completely.

There isn't one, because the MFM won't report it when it does (unless the cameras happen to be on when it happens, like the Draw Mohammed event).
See the Klackamas Mall shooting, where the gunman retreated and killed himself when confronted with an armed citizen.
There are many others but I'd have to look up the details. You pretty much have to go to gun forums or the NRA to find people who report on events like this, but they DO happen.

And yes. Legal immigration needs to be throttled down to historic lows for about a decade or so, to make up for it being at historic highs for the past decade or so. The illegals have to be deported. Any other solution is destructive to the rule of law.

Not coincidentally, this is the same century in which homosexuality has come to the fore, in one way or another.
Even in my own time I have seen a change. When I was a kid, it was customary in my country of birth for good female friends to hold hands or walk down the street arm in arm. It was completely non-sexual and innocent. Now you don't see that anymore, especially with the younger set, because they have become so self-conscious about teh ghey.

Thanks. I'm equipped at home but do not normally carry. My in-laws "hate guns" and fear them but perhaps this incident will change their minds. (They are immigrants with a culture that sees guns as only for government and criminals. They are not roof Koreans.)

Get a few opinions.
Go to your nearest "Big 5" sporting goods store (probably in Redwood City), and look at their offerings.
Pay attention to the pump-action 12-gauge shotguns (the $250 category, WITH stock); adequate quality.
The 12-gauge with #9 birdshot is reasonably effective, and will not go very far or through many things ... an advantage in SF.

Gun shops are normally busy places -- and nearly everyone in them knows how to use guns. I regularly shoot at a range where they'll rent you guns on credit, sell you ammo on credit, put it all in a basket and let you go off by yourself. You pay when you're done. A number of years ago, someone thought it'd be smart to go off, load the gun, and stick it in the face of the guy behind the counter. It wasn't.
