Sean Trende: The Groupthink of Rightist Commentary Has Become Unbearable and Frightening Lately

Actually he makes this point of all the different camps of political thought, but the other camps aren't my problem.

The right is.

Or was. I'm not sure it's my problem, either, any longer.

This is why I began trolling the "righties" on twitter: because they'd lost their damned minds and had begun quavering with Holy Horror like the most microaggressed campus Adult Baby SJWs.

The beauty of Twitter and aggregators is that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

But that's the good news. Let’s turn to the bad.

To be blunt, everyone has lost their damned minds lately. Twitter, and commentary in general, has become a giant echo chamber. My Twitter feed has devolved into a melange of undifferentiated opinions explaining not only why Donald Trump shouldn’t win this election, but also how and why it can't possibly happen. I don't just mean an overall take that he's likely to lose. I mean a complete and utter rejection of any evidence proffered that might point in a direction that is favorable to Trump. Oh, and by the way, he might also be the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse.

By the way: I agree he will almost certainly lose. But that doesn't mean people should start throwing garlic and holy water at those who suggest otherwise.

Nor does it mean the entire "right-leaning" commentariat should embrace the worst kind of Political Correctness Outrage Brigadeering to advance their political agenda and puff up their own Virtue Reserves.

This isn't just unfortunate. It's dangerous. I'm not worried about media influencing the election; media has less influence than it (and its critics) believe. I'm talking about pundits' credibility. If the entire chattering class finds itself in the grips of a massive epistemic closure, if every bit of analysis is actually nothing more than a conclusion in search of an argument, if all we hear (as in the old apocryphal Pauline Kael story) are the voices of other people telling us that Trump is awful and that he can't possibly win, then we’re like pilots flying without instruments. Maybe we’ll land safely, but the chances of a crash are much larger. Having just witnessed (and to some degree, participated in) just such a crash in the Republican primaries, I'm particularly on edge about this general election.

...

Now we’re getting to the nut of the problem. One of the Internet's flaws has always been that for all its diversity, it is unrepresentative in important ways. Even left-leaning blogs and websites have tended to be disproportionately white. It's an ongoing topic of conversation and source of controversy on these sites.

What makes this cycle so tricky is that the re-emergence of strong class and cultural divides in the election has brought new cleavages to the fore, which are likewise underrepresented among commentators. Not only do you have a whole lot of white folk on Twitter, but you have a whole lot of white professionals with college degrees, disproportionately granted from elite universities. Most of them live in cities and neighborhoods dominated by white professionals with college degrees, disproportionately granted from elite universities, and go to workplaces with similar makeups. Somehow, the pundits look even less like America this cycle than in the past.

I believe that most people in my Twitter feed, left and right, don't know many genuine Trump supporters, if any.

I think much of the grassroots of the right would be shocked to turn to see that their alleged thought-leaders are no longer attempting to push back against political correctness, but impose it every bit as vindictively and self-servingly as the Permissible Opinion Patrol brigades of the left.

The people already have a group of smug people with good grades but little experience in real-world achievement to bully them and call them bigots: we call this "the left."

I don't think they're shopping for a new group of smug, over-educated-but-under-accomplished bullies to hector them at every turn.

Meanwhile, not to speak of Unspeakable Unmentionables, but we're a week out from law-abiding citizens being attacked in wolf-pack-style attacks -- first separating them from their fellows, putting them into flight, then attacking them as they run -- and the police stood by and watched because the Mayor thinks Trump supporters deserve this.

In fact, some "right-leaning" commentators have expressed agreement with the mayor: they did deserve it. They're Unpeople of Jesusland.

The rest of the right seems happy to not talk about this.

I have long accused the left of selectively ignoring major stories which damage their narrative.

I am now witnessing the right media doing the exact same thing -- because Trump voters, while nominally "on the right," really aren't their sort of people.

Ergo, they sat on their hands about the story, largely, and continue to natter about Trump's comments about Judge Curiel.

Just like the left.

And for the exact same reasons: A sense of class-based distaste for the people under assault, and a realization that this story harms their preferred narratives.

Self-Segregation Breeds Stupidity in Micro Monocultures: A commenter writes:

I don't think there is a lack of diversity of thought, it's that we segregate into groups where there is conformity of thought. Then we burn the witches.

Yes, in any clutch of like-minded people, shared assumptions quickly become Unquestionable Dogmas, and a social-signalling competition arises, where each person's value vis-a-vis the other members of the group is established by how thoroughly he agrees with the koine of the microculture.

Then what happens is that male competition begins within the microculture, with each new would-be alpha leader of the pack showing his fitness to lead by offering an even more strident and dogmatic -- less nuanced and less caveated -- restatement of the cult dogma, until the competition simply devolves into "who can shout the most extreme version of this stupid cult creed that no one thought about for more than two minutes before accepting as God's Transmitted Truth"?

It happens in every inbred pool of thinkers. You won't have leftists in a group talking for more than three hours before someone decides to play the High Trump Card and declare, "I agree with this dogma so much we should plant bombs in the buildings of our enemies who deny it!!!"

No, the right isn't that far yet. Not quite. But they're definitely in the Raving and Casting Out the Disbelievers phase.

Genetically homogenous thought-lines, unmixed with any genes of thought from outside the family, eventually become inbred, deformed, retarded, and monstrous.

15 I know far more conservatives and Republicans who will not vote for Trump than will. But I get that. I run in circles that are completely different from Trump's main base of support. Funny thing is my circle crosses the path of a lot of liberals and democrats too. And very few are all that excited about voting for Hillary. Ultimately, I think most will, but not happily. Then I look at the Trump rallies. I see how people are really excited about voting for Trump. It leads me to believe that Trump can win. But I do worry that he will lose more than he will gain, or those losses will not be able to overcome the natural advantage the Dems start with. Of course, I didn't think he would win the nomination either.

28 The latest polls don't bear out that he will "certainly lose". And Scankles is losing a lot of her support. The Indiana exit polls said 1/3 of the Krazy Kommie backers would sit this one out if Scankles got the nomination.

True a lot of Republicans say they will sit this one out too, bit hose are national polls. The polls that really mean something are those perennial tossup States. If I sit this election out because I don't like Trump it will not mean shit because SC will still go for the Republican by at least 5%. However, a poll in FL or OH where a significant number of Republicans said they were sitting it out would mean something.

But one thing everyone seams to be missing here is there will be no huge black turnout this time with a 96% vote for the Democrat. This is why Scankles has been hitting blacks so hard, she really needs that turnout.

Democrats line up to pull that lever, no matter who it is, because to them, Republicans are the worst possible result, so anything is better.

I have no idea how its going to go with Republicans. In the end, I suspect they'll mostly go for Trump, at least the ones that don't sit it out, or vote down ticket only. Because for many republicans, they're the flip side of the above Democrats.

As for folks like me, independents? I can't say. I'll be voting for Vermin Supreme as a protest. My vote means nothing, I live in Oregon where the results are predetermined.

Whenever there is a major election with one side firmly in the CHANGE category and the other being the STATUS QUO, always bet on the change side.

Second, this is going to be a Highlander type Quickening for the right wing media. People who are 5 tiers down will move to 1st tier and those who enjoy the top now will be laughed off into obscurity.

There will be a mad scramble at the end when the enthusiasm becomes overwhelming, but the few who are left on top will not allow the backpedaling.

Take advantage of the opportunity.

I thought he was going to go transition into another reason why social media is terrible and we should all stop, because I can see how you get to that argument from here.

Social media doesn't try to give you a wide variety of opinions that might challenge your beliefs. Unless it's explicitly liberal (i.e. manually manipulated so liberal causes show up), it's just an algorithm that is designed to give you what you want to hear. It's not any different than thumbs up or thumbs down-ing a song on pandora. The algoritm looks at that data point and tries to find music like it for you (or avoid music like it for you). Eventually all your music stations look the same.

It's the same with twitter or facebook. When you like, follow, or comment, or retweet something, that's a data point that the algorithm will use to suggest other ones like this. You'll be shuffled into groups of like-minded people, and bam. Now all you hear is things you agree with and nobody is arguing to the contrary.

81 Outcomes in terms of liklihood (IMHO).

1. Hillary Beats Trump
2. FBI criminal referral and no charges from DOJ, Hillary out, Biden in, beats Trump.
3. Same as two, but Hillary hangs in and beats Trump.
4. Criminal referral against Hillary, not charges, she hangs in, Trump wins.
5. No referral for Hillary, Trump wins.
6. Trump self-destructs, stays in and loses badly.
7. Trump self-destructs, ejects. R's put in someone conservatives hate but will get behind.
8. Same as 7, except R's put in someone conservatives are happy about.
9. SMOD

Preferred outcomes are 8, then 9; but they involve extreme wish-casting. Agree with Ace that we have to face reality and deal with it. Also agree with his recent crankiness. I feel the same way, but that's because usually, even with a Dole-level RINO, I still hope they win. I can't even get up enough enthusiasm to hope Trump wins. 92 Sean Trende made this excellent point about Florida, but I would bet you could make an analogous point about Ohio, Pennsylvania and a couple of other states.

Moreover, very liberal Democrats are 14 percent of the Florida electorate in the poll, while somewhat liberal voters are 16 percent of that electorate. Very conservative voters are 16 percent of the electorate, while somewhat conservative voters are 24 percent of the electorate. The math works out that if Clinton brings home all of the liberal voters, while Trump brings home all of the conservative voters, his position would actually improve.

One of the things you learn very quickly once you wander out and start actually working in the legal field is never fall in love with your case. Never get so convinced of how noble your client is and how unassailable your legal position and how there is no possible way that a judge or jury can see otherwise.

Hubris comes before Nemesis. And Nemesis always, always comes.

Being unable to even begin to conceive of why someone would support a different candidate will doom you and your candidate to failure. You don't have to agree with it, but you have to know why. If you don't? You can't counter that appeal.

104 I am not so sure Trump will lose. I am old enough to have voted against Jimminy Carter in 1980. I thought sure King Putts would lose in 2012 because the situation, to me, was EXACTLY like 1980 - a seemingly centrist but closet leftist SCOAMF "president" who presided over a sucky economy, was terrible at foreign policy and whose main explanation for all this was that it was somebody else's fault. In Carter's case it was US and in Obumbler's case it was Bush. But I figured this new Carter was SURE to be fired just like the old one was because people ain't that stupid. They gave the guy a chance, it backfired, time for a change.

But as we all know I (and others who thought like this) were WRONG WRONG WRONG. 2012 was different than 1980 although the facts on the ground were eerily similar. But everything else was different - different voters, different attitudes, different candidates, different, different, different. The past was no longer prologue.

What does this have to do with Trump? Everything. We have probably two of the WORST candidates for president ever, at least in my lifetime. And they are very peculiar in their own respective ways, ways which by now should be obvious to everyone. The economy still stinks, foreign affairs are even WORSE now than 8 years ago (in large part thanks to Shillary) and possibly one or both of the candidates are seemingly crooks who would've been prosecuted by now if they weren't high-profile rich people. So I would suggest that NONE of the models of the past have a clue with regards to this election, assuming both candidates are still on the ballot in November. If someone can tell me who is going to show up to vote in November (burned Bernie supporters? Reps voting for Shillary? Dems for Trump?) and what the state of the country is (the economy still unexpectedly malodorous? Another terrorist attack somewhere? High-profile indictments? The media all finally crawled so far up their own a$$holes that they all disappear?) then I might predict who is going to win and still very likely be wrong. So forget the polls, forget the pants-crease pundits, forget the models, forget everything. This is totally uncharted territory. Anything can happen. And probably will.

Trump and the Judge: Cynical Politics, Not Law and Not Racism

Last week's intentionally provocative tirade against Judge Curiel was classic Donald Trump: personal, bracing and slippery. The mogul gratuitously invoked the judge's Mexican heritage, but not so much to smear Curiel as to damn him with faint praise. As sure as night follows day, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee's remarks were inflated by the media into a claim that all American judges of Mexican descent should be deemed biased against Trump.

Whatever Trump may have meant, that is not what he said.

Spot on, Ace. That's one of the big reasons why this election cycle will be unique. This level of institutional violence is unprecedented, at least since the 1860 election. In 2012, individual Republicans might get beaten up for the crime of being Republican, but now we have industrial-level class separation being introduced into the election process. A process aided and abetted by a politically-biased information distribution system managed by a MSM that has serious skin in the game.

117 Pitching a new movie idea to the studios:

The story depicts an invasion of body snatchers that begins in the editorial offices of major conservative opinion rags. Alien plant spores have fallen from space and grown into large seed pods, each one capable of reproducing a duplicate replacement copy of each human. As each pod reaches full development, it assimilates the physical characteristics, memories, and personalities of a conservative thought-leader placed near it; these duplicates, however, are devoid of all American nationalism and promote the de-industrialization of America and the replacement of Americans with aliens. These pod people leech onto tech billionaires for nutritional sustenance and political direction while they grow and multiply.

Little by little, a local blogger uncovers this "quiet" invasion and attempts to stop it.

But more importantly

It's the economy, stupid!

John Crudele at the NY Post is a real journalist who's been exposing the lies in our economic statistics for the last few years. He's got a great two-page spread today about how badly the Obama economy has performed since he's been in office. Most of us are worse off. The kicker left out of the article is that Obama has spent an excess of $8 trillion with borrowings while the Fed has kept interest rates near zero -- GDP growth should have been redlining above 5% -- instead its been less than our population growth -- we've collectively been getting poorer.

Expect Trump to make Hillary own this.

136 It's liberating watching the GOPe and Conservatism Inc. ignore the mob violence directed towards Trump supporters while calling Trump a racist. It comfirmed that the GOPe/ Conservatism Inc. had cast their lot with the SJWs who now control the Democrats.

At some point in the past the Rubicon had been crossed but I could only suspect it. The anti-Trump commentaries and denunciations of the past few days was the moment in which I actually saw Bill Kristol, Lindsay Graham, Victor French on the other side of the river holding hands with DeRay McKeeson, Rachel Dolezal, and Sally Kohn singing "We Shall Overcome."

Roosh argued that the Conservative establishment was collapsing but I didn't completely believe him. The last few days have now left no doubt in my mind about his assertion.

kicker left out of the article is that Obama has spent an excess of $8

less than our population growth -- we've collectively been getting

1) She is a liar. There is not a single thread of integrity here
2) A follow on to that - she is not likable.
3) Don't discount Bernie and his followers abandoning the DNC cause.
4) She is holding fast to TFG's accomplishments (mainly because she has none herself). She will have to own the shitstorm that will be coming. And it will come.
5) Trump - while a raving lunatic, has excited the populace. He is taking on MSM and is not afraid to get into their face. The populace has been waiting for this for a very very long time and is eating this up.
6) Trump is still an anti-establishment candidate. Nobody wants anything to do the the GOPe.
7) Shrillary is (serously?) wounded by the email server issue. And while an indictment may or may not come, the issue will not go away before the election.

There are still a bunch of ideas as to how Obama got reelected, but I think a lot of it was due to his celebrity and, for better or worse, there isn't a bigger celebrity at the moment than Trump.

If Trump gets people to go out and vote, he will win and win YUGE!! Because people are more likely to vote for someone they know than someone they don't. Now if you're uber-partisan, you already know the candidates anyway, and your vote was going one way anyway. I give negative 5 billion shits about what anyone says on Twitter.

And guess what: Most Trump voters give a similar number of shits about Twitter, pundits, the self-appointed "thought leaders" of our "culture."

Poll are conducted by college-age white smug unemployable asswipes, and fewer and fewer of real people respond to them, or give honest answers to them.

As a result, polls are utterly inaccurate and worth nothing.

Ooooh, the commentariat disingenuously announces that Trump WILL lose because in fact they're just announcing this "fact" because they WANT him to lose, as a way of virtue-signaling to their fellow smug intellectuals that they aren't sullied with prole cooties.

This is it. This is what the voters know the election is all about.
The "smart set" thought they could just do what they've always done, give lip service to border control, and then just lie once they got into office and stab the voters in the back. We've had enough. Trump is the only one, on either side of the aisle, who will stop the illegal immigration.
The GOP have believed their own bs that if it is trump vs Hillary, it will be okay because there is no way he can win and they will get their open borders. Maybe they are apoplectic now because they see he can win. Everyone I know, regardless of party, is voting for him.
I never thought I would vote republican in my life but someone needs to take on the democratic/media/GOPestablishment party for the people, and Trump stepped up to the plate. And to all of you "constitutionalists" out there, remember, when there's no border, the constitution is an afterthought.

242 162 I think it's like Obama's strongest argument: it makes the voter feel good about themselves for voting for the first ever "X" candidate (black, woman, whatever). It's the same impulse that drives these LIVs and Lefties to get offended on behalf of an "X" group of people - it makes them feel all virtuous, caring, noble and gives 'em a sense or moral superiority. It's all about the feelz.

Posted by: Lizzy at June 09, 2016 02:37 PM (NOIQH)

Broadly speaking then, it is what Ace was calling "virtue signaling" to vote for Obama. I am no racist!, they tell themselves, and voters happily pulled the lever in droves for the first president ever not to deliver at least one year of 3% growth.

Hillary does not have that argument going for her, I don't believe. She's been around so long running for president I don't get the sense the LIV's are falling for her gender as a reason to vote for her.

Maybe Bernie's greatest contribution was fighting so long and so hard, and poking holes in the gender inevitability argument.

Now, I am usually of the opinion that it is just talking and people can defend themselves, but I do not think people realize when they shout down opposing opinions, they just end up 'purifying' their own side, turning them off from any further arguments the people make. Not to mention it also calcifies your own opinions and makes it harder for you to argue YOUR points if you never hear a dissenting voice.

This is true no matter what you are arguing, whether it be free speech, abortion, rule of law, or the clear superiority of the 1911 to a glock.

Well, they were "wrong" in 2012, just not in our direction. Gallup had Romney winning nationwide but the state by state polls were all in that "too close to call range".

But almost all the polls were "right" in the sense they fell in the margin of error which is all a poll promises to be.

Trump has though routinely outperformed his polling.

And most of the head to head numbers where Hillary is way far ahead of Trump also had people like Ted Cruz getting beat by nearly double digits as well.

Unless its something crazy like Hillary is up 12 the week before the election, I don't think polls are going to be as reliable as they used to be in predicting the winner.

Posted by: josephistan at June 09, 2016 02:42 PM (7HtZB)

What makes some opposed to that is going back to ace's social signaling aspects. That Trump is abhorrent to them. So they don't even want to lose with him. They certainly don't want to win with him.

They'd rather lose with Paul Ryan than win with Trump, because Paul Ryan would do things the "proper" way.

Also with Trump as the nominee rather than one of the preferred Establishment tools they won't get to insult the base for being the ones that stayed home and "cost us the election."

Good point. I agree that many on the Left do not love Clinton, not at all. But how many are willing to admit that she is worse than Trump? Even Susan Sarandon, who said this publicly recently, will likely still vote for the Dem candidate.

The GOP candidate du jour = Hitler/stupidest person evah brainwashing is strong on the Left. That's one thing they are very good at: inoculating their candidate's weaknesses by making the GOP candidate Hitler's (latest) incarnation.

292 On a much more somber note, these times in which a divide exists between the Capitol Conservatives and the rest of the GOP appears A LOT like the divide between coastal elites and the agrarians in the 13 Colonies in the years leading up to the First Continental Congress. Strangely, there was also a ethnic/ class divide of sorts. The coastal gentry were largely English while the agrarians were largely Scottish and Irish.

You saw a similar divide within the Gambinos when Paul Castellano took over. There were clearly two factions, the blue collar guys represented by Bergin Hunt and Fish Club and the one represented by Castellano's aspirations to be "corporate" and refined. Once Aniello Dellacroce died, the blue collar guys led by John Gotti took action.

But this idea -- that we'll give Those People such a resounding loss they'll realize how stupid they are and how much they need us -- is a popular one, and they have no shame or hesitation about expressing it publicly.

Did it work when McCain lost. Did the people who backed him decide that his loss meant they had to come up with a different sort of nominee? Just the opposite. They doubled down and went with Romney.

If Trump loses, haw can the #NeverTrumpers think that Trump supporters will blame themselves or rump himself? Trump's supporters will blame the saboteurs.

Yes, I do. Worked at a university where better than half the students were Chinese - ROC and PRC, in about equal portions, with a few others thrown in for good measure - for about 15 years, and the leadership were all Chinese of the Older Generation - Madam's father, whose funeral I attended, was cremated, and his ashes stored in a monument in Taipei along with those of Generalissimo Chiang and all his general staff, to be buried in their home villages when the homeland is free.

All the faculty there were Chinese, now I work for a Korean company here in town.

How it happened, I have no idea - I just sort of fell into it, to the point that the dudes at the banh mi shop know how I like my sammiches.

349 " the same cry was thrown out in '12- "the polls must be wrong."

A big difference between Mittens and Trump is that fights back. Whether or not he fights back efficiently is a matter of debate, but Trump is not submissively mewling "The President is right", or letting Fatass Crowley piss in his face.

A second difference is the perception that one of the things he will do is stop illegal immigration. Again, whether or not he will do so can be debated, but Trump is at least addressing an issue which matters to America in contrast to the 2012 Mittens.

The things you can't know until the votes have been counted:
How successful will the democong "get out the cheat" effort be?
Will Trump counter the fraud voting?
How many dem voters cross over to vote for Trump, EVEN IF NOT the down ticket?
Will blacks sit out in what numbers? ( If the demong dont get a good crop out of their welfare-voting plantations, they traditionally lose that election)

Hearkening back to ace's long post the other day about breaking the Hollyweird habit, I found that when I first started commenting about my having done just that, what I got in response from certain quarters of the dextrosphere was... weird.

I found myself being denounced by ostensible conservatives as being a "cultural rejectionist", among other epithets.

So is vaguely Maoist-sounding terminology for internal enemies a thing on the right now? I guess that it is. So hard to keep up!

Back in 1992, the Democrats managed, in one of history's great switcheroos, to convince the country that red is the color of conservatism. Rather than the blue which it had traditionally previously been. And despite the long association of the color red with the left.

But hey, if we're red in color now, we better have Red Guards to go along with it. To police diligently against deviationism. Also, wreckers and kulaks. And it appears the Guards are donning their uniforms as we speak.

I've talked about it before and I will mention it again: The Eichmann Show is a good movie. It shows how nuts the left was/is to the point of not even recognizing the evil of nazism -- fascist America and Israel are worse then the Holocaust. smh

Someone this am mentioned what a jerk the historian Steven Cohen is. He's right. Cohen is crazy.

You can watch or download the film here. My screen says it is an error but if you click on play, it plays fine:

http://goo.gl/p4SZcY

There is a scene where the Hwd fruitcake starts yapping that anyone can be an "eichmann." Guy who spent his formative years and lost his entire family in the camps, says no. Hwd putz, says yes you could. smh

In another scene Hwd Putz asks another Israeli who survived Auschwitz what he "thinks of Eichmann as a man." Israeli looks at him in disgust and say, I have to go to bed, good night.

The hwd putz is Leo Hurwutiz who went on to direct the NYU documentary film school for a million years.

I despise Trump. I think he is a buffoon who will crash and burn and betray the people who vote for him....but he will win.

And I will vote for him because he will also "destroy conservatism"...Not the Conservative Movement--Bush already destroyed that.

No, he will destroy' modern conservatism", which is really just Statist Corporatism. The modern conservatism believes that the state exists to boost business and to enforce businesses rents and monopolies against the citizenry.

Frick the GOP. Frick Ryan. Frick, especially, Frisk McCain, Romney, Graham, McConnell and those bastards.

Trump is a disaster and will destroy D.C....and that is why I will vote for him along with most of the country.

What amazes me is how and when Trump comes up w/strangers or acquaintances. Like, you can be chtchatting with a person who works at your local grocery, some one you don't know exactly, but you see 'em almost weekly, and they mention Trump and how glad they are that *someone* is finally calling BS on all of Obama's and the Left's PC nonsense.

483 I watched The Bourne Legacy last night. The first five minutes of the film are fantastic and the movie wanders a bit from there.

I mention this because it had some super banal government villains in the movie who early on visit Rachel Weisz at her home and (unaware she is married to James Bond and he could really hurt them) they tried to kill her.

It was all very clinical and passionless. They were doing the murder because some office geek must have sent them a text message or something and ordered it. They looked like perfect Progressive technocrats just doing their thing. The film reminded me that we should not let government agents carry guns except under very limited circumstances.

Unfortunately for them, but good for the plot, Jeremy Renner came along and he was pretty no-nonsense.

What in the wide world of sports does the agent have to do with it? And yes, some agents do indeed lead their idiot stars around by the nose, but I think the better way to view this is the guilt and shame surrounding so many of these stars and their lives, they live in a world of glitter and make believe PRECISELY because they like that world better than their real lives.

So they go about it, one way or another, with their small, perverse habits, and work harder at hiding it than they do their craft.

And of course the media industrial complex in Hollywood exists precisely to help keep the illusion alive.

And no, I dont think of her as bisexual. She may have had sex with men for reasons other than sexual attraction. She is attracted sexually and emotionally to women. I know of two women like her who made messes out of men's lives. They were looking for someone older to support them, whether a man or a woman tho it was clear that they were really lesbians. 553 You've really gone cuckoo bananas over this judge thing. Trump lashed out against someone who is acting adverse to his interests, and tossed out a nasty personal insult with a racial twinge. His comment reminded the Trump-skeptical that this is simply what the man does: he says dumb, mean-spirited shit that you would expect of a school yard bully. The man is almost 70; he'll never change.

I agree that the people who are most offended by this flap are white, college educated professionals who hang with other like people. I'm one of them. I'm a white lawyer who works in Philadelphia and lives in a suburban county. But Trump needs people like me if he wants to win Pennsylvania.

I was momentarily on the Trump train for a week or two after he cinched the nomination. I was never full #NeverTrump because I knew that Hillary would be the opponent. But every time he accentuates the reasons I already dislike him, I think of having to explain to my kids why I voted for him. And, I don't want to do that. If I vote for a presidential candidate, it will likely be the libertarian, although they haven't thrilled me either.

Thanks to Hollywood there's plenty in flyover country these days. Depp could tear through a whole sorority in Ohio one Saturday night.

555 "But every time he accentuates the reasons I already dislike him, I think of having to explain to my kids why I voted for him. "

Just my opinion - I would hate to have to explain one day to kids why I didn't vote for him and I in effect helped an evil woman get elected and Americans lost what remains of their liberties.

And I'm not a big fan of Trump.

There is a lot of talk about how tough Trump's base - blue collar whites - have had it under Obama. White professionals, like yourself, don't really give a shit about that, which is fair, I guess. We vote according to our own situations. I don't think the upper middle class whites really believe that eventually they'll be next on the chopping block. Oh, what a surprise you are in for.

You may want to give some thought about how you're going to explain to your kids how you let the whole United States of America fall apart.*
*That's not a threat to try and force you to back Trump, but just a friendly road sign to remind you of where you actually are. I personally don't think anybody can stop what's coming, but it can be sped up. I figure a good man is the worst possible outcome, at this point. The whole thing collapses immediately if someone tries to fix anything, but let the crooks keep running it and who knows how long it can go on.

558 I'm pretty bored with the election cycle.

They're calling Trump an idiot and racist, which is what they do for every republican candidate. He isn't either one.

I'll vote, and he either wins or doesn't.
I'll survive, or maybe they'll send me to a death camp, whatever

559 I'm not a Marxist or a racial Marxist, so I don't really have a lot of class sentimentality. It doesn't particularly bother me when a bunch of middle managers get fired at a struggling company, for example, even though those people are like me. Similarly, it doesn't really bother me terribly much when a factory closes. These things happen in a free market. And, yes, the robots are coming for all the jobs. If you want my stance on the white working class, I'm in the Kevin Williamson class: help yourself. Get a Uhaul and move to where there are better opportunities.

Anyway, I see America's biggest problem as our entitlements crisis. Trump may well run to Hillary's left on that. So, why is he averting disaster again?

Posted by: gts109 at June 09, 2016 04:07 PM (rX06+)

560 Also, to claim that Trump is going to protect liberty is to ignore everything he says.

561 >>>Then what happens is that male competition begins within the microculture, with each new would-be alpha leader of the pack showing his fitness to lead by offering an even more strident and dogmatic -- less nuanced and less caveated -- restatement of the cult dogma, until the competition simply devolves into "who can shout the most extreme version of this stupid cult creed that no one thought about for more than two minutes before accepting as God's Transmitted Truth"
----

And this traces back to what I've been trying to say for months now and constantly catch shit for doing so...Given that conservatives continue to be defeated at the ballot box, what BESIDES RANTING ON THE INTERNET AND CONSTANTLY REITERATING THE CULT DOGMA are conservatives DOING to expand the conservative base. It becomes more and more obvious every election that things are slipping away. What are you going to DO about it? Do. Not talk. Not volunteer at a phone bank (more talk) or canvass your neighborhood (walking and talking), but DO. DO DO DO DO DO?

Posted by: DFCtomm at June 09, 2016 04:19 PM (qGQUx)

563 It's a strange year, there's a lot of division on both the left & the right, Hillary Clinton is rightly viewed as a terrible campaigner & a deeply dishonest person, and Trump is highly unpredictable. Then there's the potential for sudden events like a criminal referral for Clinton, a serious Trump anger meltdown, the economy suddenly tanking, China/Russia/etc. suddenly attacking a neighbor.....

Personally, I think it was a mistake to nominate such a high risk political novice who practiced divisive scorched earth tactics in the primary. It would surprise me if he managed to win the election. He's got strong backing from his supporters and some crossover appeal, but his campaign infrastructure is very weak and he's easily distracted from attacking Hillary on her negatives.

However, it's impossible to know for sure how this will turn out. Two such deeply disliked candidates with all those possible black swan events hanging out there..... We'll just have to wait and see.

Oklahoma, reddest of red states, just put devices in place to be used by the highway patrol to rob you blind by the roadside. Devices that will take every penny in your bank accounts. This is the true face of conservatism in 2016. It's no better, nor worse than the Democrats. They all devolve into a felonious money racket given enough time.

Posted by: DFCtomm at June 09, 2016 04:26 PM (qGQUx)

565 "The rest of the right seems happy to not talk about this."

The Unpeople Of Jesusland, not being stupid, figured out a long time ago that the rest of the right considers them an embarrassment. Thus Trump.

The right-sans-Jesusland is now freaking out because they simply cannot understand why Trump won't respect their authoritah and start speaking and campaigning to *them*. Fine, you had to throw some red meat to the those states filled with soccer-moms and flyover hillbillies, but now it's time to get serious and talk to the tiny fraction of the population that Really Matters.

They can't make sense of this rejection, so like a teenager pining for their ex-boyfriend they make up explanations in their heads. Trump is a stupid poopyhead. Trump is deliberately throwing the election. Trump is Hypno-Hitler but their own brilliance and goodness makes them immune to his seductive powers.

Eventually most will get over their bruised egos and wake up to reality. Some won't. Sad.

566 the 'right' pundits (from NRO and elsewhere) are deliberately talking down his chances. He's a threat to their careers. They and their relatives won't get jobs with him like they did with Bush, but they'll be more relevant with Hillary in the white house.

National Review has been pro-Hillary (to be fair just about 50% pro hillary) for a while now.

568 Actually, the Trump supporters are mostly beleaguered, patriotic, white SUBURBANITES. Just check out the crowds at any Trump rally. I'm fed up with the meme, spread by the Uniparty pundit-wallahs, that Trump fans are "declassé" in some fashion. This is done on purpose to make the "bien-pensants" think [sic] that Social Ostracism and, perish the thought, Walmartian Status awaits any boob dumb enough to press the Trump button for the jump to hyperspace.

570 The mind loss goes both ways, though. I can't bear the idea that Trump somehow becomes a president. For me personally it's like mind rape to force me to vote for him just because of Hillary. However, I know many respected, smart and intelligent people who are on board with him and they worship him the same crazy way Obama was worshiped in 2008. I wasn't puzzled by Obama but I'm puzzled by the Trump phenomenon and still trying to think of why? It can't be just bold (but empty) statements, can it? I won't fight it with frothing mouth, but won't commit a willing rape of my ballot. He's still to actually produce something beyond his brand name to convince me.

571 Mark Steyn has subbed for Rush Limbaugh yesterday and today, and he's blistering in his denunciation of the NeverTrump crowd, taking apart their arguments joint from joint. Transcripts at Rush Limbaugh dotcom, free to read.

572 571: Steyn is the brightest, funniest voice on the "Right," such as there is one, these days.

I disagree that Trump almost certainly will lose. He could lose in a blow out, win in a blow out, or this may be a standard nailbiter. No one knows and there is no empirical data to back up any claims. Shermanesque statements are empty rhetoric at the moment.

And THIS is precisely is why #nevertrump cultists are so unhinged. Well, that and they were batshit crazy at best and treasonous at worst pre-Trump. The menstruating hashtag boys want him to lose, and badly, and that it isn't a given micro-aggresses the estrogen straight out of them. Their shit largely is funny at this point but names need to be remembered, win, lose or tie.

577 Nice Ace. I would just add that the enforcement of political correctness (intentionally misunderstanding anything that leaves open a door for misunderstanding, so as to impose a hypersensitive ultra-invasive thought-policing against heterodox views), is a deeply and fundamentally LEFTIST activity.

Conservatives try to understand, not misunderstand, because our goal is to make sense, so that we can preceded in a sensible and constructive direction, whereas the left is all about trying to manipulate narratives so as to achieve advantage for what they presume to be correct. That is official leftist doctrine, the core teaching of post-modernism: that there is no such thing as truth, only power, to be achieved through the selection and production of manipulatively advantageous interpretation.

So when we see "conservatives" deploying intentional misunderstanding in pursuit of demagogically dishonest manipulative advantage, they have become leftists, and this is possible because they were raised and bred and trained in leftist politically correct environments. They have demonstrated the capacity to think straight about some things, but the vast wilderness of their minds is still enslaved by the leftist air that they have always breathed.

Now here comes Trump, launching Roman Candles of political incorrectness in multiple directions and these semi-conservatives, who have found ways to avoid leaving openings for intentional misunderstanding, managing to eke out some tested and safe terrain, have no idea how to be safe on the politically incorrect ground that Trump is recklessly breaching.

They have no ability to think on their feet and no willingness to try because they think that to be safe they have to leave no door open for intentional misunderstanding. They can't think outside of that mode, so Trump, who is oblivious to what opportunities he is leaving open for intentional misunderstanding, launches them into a panic. Their minds are fundamentally enslaved to the leftist mode. They can't say "no, intentional misunderstanding is wrong" because they have been accommodating to it their whole lives. They literally know nothing else, making Trump appear as suicide to their enslaved minds.

Posted by: Alec Rawls at June 10, 2016 02:49 AM (5z7RS)

578 This is why they are so sure that trump will lose: because they think in terms of a battlefield where saying anything that is open to intentional misunderstanding means losing. They think in terms of the totally slanted playing field that the left has succeeded in imposing over its academic and media domains, but that isn't the only playing field.

The most important terrain is in the minds of the electorate, and they are coming out for Trump. They give him the benefit of the doubt because they are normal and decent, not twisted products of leftist academia.

Posted by: Alec Rawls at June 10, 2016 03:06 AM (5z7RS)

579 >>The most important terrain is in the minds of the electorate

This. Loosen the mainstream media and academia's grip on the minds of the electorate and their game weakens further. Anything done to break that grip is a positive. Even if Trump were to fail, I pray to God that the understanding that this point is damn near paramount is sustained. We must not turn back to the George Will/Karl Rove culture of fear of the media summed up in the mantra of "don't go to war with people who buy ink by the barrel". It is absurd how they have surrendered the culture to the left with this idiocy. It's like saying "don't go to war with people who have guns". Stupid.
