Microsoft Backtracks On 'Nasty Trick' Upgrade To Windows 10

Days after angering many users with its so-called "nasty trick", Microsoft has reversed its crazy decision to infuriate users by upgrading them to Windows 10 automatically. Users were angry that clicking the cross to dismiss the box meant that they had agreed to the upgrade. Based on "customer feedback", Microsoft said it would add another notification that provided customers with "an additional opportunity for cancelling the upgrade". Microsoft told the BBC it had modified the pop-up as a result of criticism: "We've added another notification that confirms the time of the scheduled upgrade and provides the customer an additional opportunity for cancelling or rescheduling the upgrade. If the customer wishes to continue with their upgrade at the designated time, they can click 'OK' or close the notifications with no further action needed."

Microsoft has been an asshole about the free Windows 10 upgrade from the get-go. First they had the reminder in the taskbar that would not go away, then they started auto-scheduling the upgrade whether you wanted it or not, then they sneakily changed the confirmation window so that clicking on the usual X box for close actually was taken as an Okay to upgrade.

Just stop it assholes. People will eventually upgrade to Windows 10 (or not) on their own damn schedules. If your product is decent, you shouldn't have to act like malware vendors.

So, through lobbying, number 1, student loans can't be discharged in bankruptcy (it can be discharged, but only in very extraordinary circumstances). See, if you're a lender, you get Big Gov to keep the suckers on the hook for life.

Second, it's govt. guaranteed. If the borrower defaults, Uncle Sugar makes up for it. And the same Sallie Mae, et. al racket also gets to be the collection agency for the govt., when the govt. "buys out the bad debt" to make good on that guarantee.

They get all the default fees and collection fees and all that shit. The borrower is on the hook, Uncle Sugar makes them whole, and they get paid for trying to get what they can out of the defaulted borrower. Gov gets principle and interest back, but they jack up the fees, which they get.

They can't lose.

For starters, if such a plan, universities would instantly drop degrees in the "lower-paying" and/or riskier fields, like history or philosophy or English, and focus more on science and math. Now I'm a science and math guy, but I know that not everyone is cut out for science and math. For those people who are good writers but are terrible at science and math, there would likely be a lot fewer options for them. Probably only the big state schools would offer those.

One of the things we make is scorebooks, for various sports. I don't know who the end users are but I think they are probably used by high schools and colleges. Our wholesale customers who order from us in turn sell them retail.

Last week we got an order for 1200 field hockey scorebooks. The printing is done on a laser printer, but the binding is largely handwork.

I've been banging them out. I've done 500 in the last three days, with 700 more to go. It's like assembly line work, but it's cool. It's not like I have to to do it all day every day. This is an unusually large order.

I imagine them being used in high schools and colleges all over the country. I have pride in my work.

I'm planning on running the VMs under CentOS, instead of Mint -- Mint is friendly enough to be a user machine. OTOH, I'm extremely intrigued by Qubes. A good proportion of the computers online around Casa de Cthulhu are Raspberry Pis -- some of which are running Raspbian, some Ubuntu, and some Kali.....with several running honeypots.

Haven't tried Qubes myself. CentOS is just RHEL with the serial numbers filed off, so anything that works on one will work on the other.

Interest rate is proportional to that risk, and because of the dynamics, as the likely default rate gets to a certain point, interest rate blows up, and that class of borrower becomes "unlendable", much like "uninsurable".

Student loans would likely fall into this category. For a few, they might exist, but the terms on the borrower would be, well, strict.

And that's the fucking way it should be.

One of the issues with the blog is that every post on the front page gets loaded when you reload page and that includes every single video and image below the fold as well. It's basically like a ginormous Geocities page from the late 90s that's heavy on videos and big images.

191 Free market student loans. Student doesn't party. He has to prove he's making the grade and studying. If he isn't, and his grades go bad, well, he loses the rest of any future funding right then. His loan becomes due and payable right then.

Now, in a proper system, something like that is overseen by the courts, and a bankruptcy would discharge it. Lender would get what he could under that system, but he would lose his ass, likely.

That's why there likely wouldn't be too many student loans in a free market, too damn risky.

193 If student loans went away, or were cosigned by Universities themselves, I'd expect the STEM subjects to be hit hardest. Why? Because STEM tends to be much more expensive than a creative writing class, or a history class. You need labs and equipment.

Expect engineering to move back towards an apprenticeship model. Ditto the sciences.

I am sympathetic to universities attempting to be something more than businesses. They all make the pretense of that. I have more respect for them when they deliver on it.

If a guy is able to pass his classes, stay enrolled, and graduate, while just partying, though--yeah, that should reflect on the university. They should be responsible for it.

As long as the Griggs v.Duke Power decision by the Supreme Court makes it infinitely risky to use competency tests rather than certification a requirement for hiring, there will be degree programs for people who can read and write and have enough common sense and discipline not to take classes that are too hard for them to pass.

On the other hand, look at the Duke 88 who signed the petition demanding that the lacrosse team players be railroaded based on the testimony of a mentally ill, drug addicted murderess. How many of those faculty were from the math and science departments? Any?

It seems to me that state legislatures in red states are more likely to view the faculties of the humanities departments of the state universities as ideological enemies and cut out funding for those departments to save money and to defund leftists who abuse their positions of trust in order to indoctrinate students away from the beliefs that their parents tried to raise them with.

Same problem with the colossal B-36. You can only see part of it at any given time from any given angle.

What they might do is have tuition paid on a per course basis and charge less for non-lab courses. This makes sense anyway since the college spends less on equipment and facilities for them.

Students could get a BA in English for less than what they would pay for a BS in chemistry. But then, they would expect to make less money from the degree.

I dunno. I just know that the present system is making costs spiral out of control. The universities are cashing in like crazy --- wasting horrific amounts of money on administration and nonsense, while lacking fiscal accountability.

211 I've read SLA Marshall's description of Omaha Beach during the first wave on D-Day.

I believe that version, as gripping and tragic as it is, came under some fire later as being impossibly accurate given how few survivors he was able to successfully interview. Since most of those survivors would been fighting well inland, while SLA came along much later.

Still, even 20 percent accurate would ha e been more than I would have been able to survive.

A guy at work said he got one of the IRS scam calls that provided a number to call back, so he started calling it back and just unloading the vilest, most racist insults on the scammer. And not just once, he did it randomly until his phone was blocked.

I read some economic pooh-pah paper on this. Student loans, the increased demand for edumacation from all the money thrown at it was respsonsible for something like 110% of the increase.

How was it more than 100%. Well, there were other factors than decreased it. So without those, tuition would be about 110% of what it is now. :-)

I have not seen anybody saying that everybody needs to go into a STEM program. I have seen people saying that there is not much point in people paying enormous amounts of money to get a non-STEM degree.

However, as long as Griggs v.Duke Power is the law of the land, colleges will be the gate keepers to better paying jobs and they will use that position to extract every dime that they can from students and their parents.

European countries can offer free university tuition because they only admit students who test well enough to show that they can handle the work. The United States could probably afford to do the same thing except for the fact that that sort of testing has a disparate impact which makes it politically impossible here.

Insurance companies deal with that sort of risk all the time. The university can either hire some actuaries to evaluate the risk or they can require students to buy insurance sort of like the way that people with less than 20% equity in their house have to buy mortgage insurance. Tuition loan insurance for freshmen might be considerably more expensive than for upperclassmen.

That's a big reason I changed careers less than a year after graduation and went into tech. You do your own studying, take a test, and get a piece of paper that says you know how to do the job. End of. No dog and pony show, no indoctrination, no social justice crap. One day, if we're lucky, that'll be how it's done in every industry and the education-industrial complex will be dismantled.

The "mile wide and an inch deep" philosophy of teaching in the universities does not turn out generalists who you can drop into any situation and figure out the rest as they go along, it turns out people with no useful skills.

If the university is admitting and keeping people who aren't attending class, that reflects on the university.

For most of the history of universities' existence, they had a ready-made solution to that.

If doing away with in loco parentis or simply flunking people out causes a serious problem that they can't fix and that is fundamental to their core mission, then they screwed up by doing away with it.

Maybe if they reinstituted that, students would take their education more seriously.

271 I actually don't really know if it would be possible or not, widespread. But there are things that are uninsurable. The risk cannot be properly measured or it's a losing proposition.

For example consider flood insurance. That is uninsurable all but for Uncle Sugar (or some huge entity like it) being able to absorb the risk. The probability distribution doesn't work out like the normal, oh how does it go, binomial distribution.

With flood insurance, there is no flood, or everybody in a given area floods. So rather than a nice function that works out to be. If the loss is going to $X per case and the risk is p, then the expected payout for the insurer is r*X per individual.

With the flood, that distribution is all lop sided, and you have say, r% of everybody losing, meaning you lose your ass and (1 - r)% of no payout at all.

And then there's the case when r gets so high, that the cost of administering and running the insurance is going to cost the customer more than the loss would in the first place.

Health insurance for routine medical shit is exactly this.

I think it's much more likely universities get hit by state governments going after their endowments, which they can do and which even liberal states have a large incentive to tax.

I know they're BS because I worked in a bankruptcy law office and learned straight from attorneys, if someone is going to sue you they HAVE to notify you via mail with a summons.

What's frustrating is my mom. She believes every damn word they say, but then she's always been like that when it comes to believing the worst about me. "You've GOT to call them back!!!" I've told her over and over again it's a scam, but then they start up again after a few months and my mom panics again. Sigh. I love her, but some things about her are *so* frustrating.

The problem is that we are stuck in the mentality that it's either degree = success, or no degree = drudge labor.

We need to reembrace technical associate degrees, apprenticeships, and certificates like they have in tech.

The purpose of a full college degree was to ground people in the broader inheretence of Western Civilization and refine leadership skills of the elite few... something colleges don't do now-a-days.

The thing is, you don't need to go through a traditional 4-year bachlors program to do that. Many community college let you take history and literature classes really cheaply and on your schedule. Heck, better yet just pick up a philosophy book and read it for yourself without being told what you are supposed to think it means.

The only real major benefit of college irrespective of degree is that it is a chance to network and make connections with others (i.e. it's not what you know, but who you know).

Unless you get into a very, very top level college and network like crazy, your best bet is to go to community college and transfer to state college.

That way there are no distorted incentives in either direction, either by universities trying to treat students like children, or by universities simply fleecing students with extra fluff.

Despite the brave talk of academic freedom, jobs like University Chancellor are great jobs, much sought after and hard to get. Even if somebody resigned their job rather than compromise their left wing principals, they would be easy to replace. As for professors, how many adjuncts and non-tenured assistant professors are there who would walk barefoot over broken glass to replace any professor who resigned?

There are some state systems, CA for example, that have more full-time admins than full-time teachers.

This "socializing" happens with loans (and insurance as well). The risk premium increases based on your risk. You are paying for everyone default risk in your risk class, your risk pool

This is why classification is so important. The low risk can have a lower rate/premium than the high risk. O-care goes in the other direction. It puts the very high risk, uninsurable in the larger risk pool, raising everyone's cost.

So, there would be a risk pool process for potential students. A slacker, based on his previous record (and some other process) would be in a very high risk pool, while the good students would be a lower one.

That's the what it would have to work. Again, free market at work.

I remember years ago when a court order required the first woman to be admitted to The Citadel. It might have been NPR but some radio program was interviewing students at The Citadel to get their reactions. One of the students said that he had transferred to The Citadel because his first semester in college he had partied and either flunked out or nearly flunked out so he made the mature decision to put himself in an environment that had strict rules and where he would essentially be forced to study instead of party.

Perhaps there would be more of that sort of structured learning environments which, due to their lower rate of partying inspired drop outs, could offer lower tuition.

What tools do they have to fight against the legislature? The Legislature can just cut their budget every year by the amount of the salary of the particular professor. Or the budget for his entire department can be cut or transferred either to the engineering school or to a community college to teach welding.

Chemjeff, I haven't fully thought through Insty's proposal yet. But I really don't see what's unfair about it. The school had a choice of whether to admit the student or not. If you gave them a choice of firing a person or cutting the budget by an amount equal to that person's salary, I don't think there's a chance in hell they ditch him. For starters, if he's tenured they probably aren't legally allowed to. But, even if they were, it's like dealing with a union. As far as they're concerned, if they leave of them out to dry, they're all fucked.

The better solution for nearly everything is to privatize the whole thing. Under the original Federal scheme, the Federal government did nearly nothing -- Article 1, section 8 of the Constitution spells it out:

Unless the state constitution specifies otherwise, I believe that the state legislature can do whatever they want when it comes to funding the state universities. We originally bought an 8630. If you leave it for a few weeks, the printhead clogs (this unit has separate printhead/ink tanks). With a clogged printhead, HP decided to swap out the entire printer -- but the supplied replacement printer ships without a printhead. So many 8630 printheads are failing that they can't keep them in stock, so they shipped me an 8710. Complicating everything, there is a "setup" ink pack and "production" ink packs, and the "setup" ink pack localizes you to political zone and time zone. IOW, I cannot initialize an HP printer to work in Nor Cal and expect it to work in England.

I handled some very sensitive T3 Security and Technical Support type customer service calls.

I mean, it took me 8-12 min just to get access to my corporate email via the secure VPN and get my phone set up every day.

I was in the midst of a FUCKING CALL when Windows popped up w/ an update and I X-ed it out and it proceeded to go through the update and restart process ANYWAY!

(Good news on the customer, he kind of knew that my investigation was gonna be bad news before this Windows bullshit started. I got the chance to let him know that his call may be dropped and why and that I'd call him back. It took me 43 min. to STOP the upgrade and get my ass back on line, and an additional 19 to finish up my investigation and give the guy a call back at work. (He was ridiculously cool about it but most others just would not be. At all.)

So, no Microsoft, I did not want Windows 10 on my computer right then and I and my employer had our reasons.

Now, it's fucking personal.

I WILL do the whole registry kick and un-hide hidden files etc., for as LONG AS IT TAKES.

Threaten to make me BUY Windows 10 for my own PC?

Eh, once Windows 10 OS becomes so bog standard for business, that I have to switch, I'll spend the money and buy a new little box that has it pre-loaded from fucking Walmart for $300-$900.

ALSO!

Do not buy a "subscription" to Microsoft Office!

It took almost twenty minutes to download the upgrade and than I got a notice that it had not completed because the computer may have a virus. So we'll scan it and then try again, right? Scan reported nothing wrong. Back to the upgrade, which Kaspersky reports as complete when I try to run it. Is there anything to worry about here?

I have had phenomenally bad luck with linux distros since about the time of Win 3.1 (and yes I was exploring linux for the obvious reasons. I had such great hopes. Dashed of course)

I even tried BUYING a distro (Mandrake I think?) yet none would either finish the install or when installed did not work properly and I could not get it to do so with the hardware I had at the time for unknown reasons.

Then they canceled support for the only Windows that freaking works and doesn't die an instant death if looked at funny.

This now meant war. (BTW, I'm convinced that MS put something on my computer when they did that last upgrade that makes it periodically spin the HD or the DVD/CD drive so that it sounds like an F-4 spooling up for takeoff)

So I went looking once again with little hope of success.

Found Linux mint. Decided I would do a "Live" thingy were it's installed on a memory stick so that no code would be put on my HD. That WORKED!!!!!!

Oh frabjous day, calloo callay! It worked. Herky jerky because of the lag using a memory stick.

So I got cocky and decided to do an install on some larger faster removable media. And that WORKED TOO!!11!!11!!

So now I clone my HD to another HD every month so I have instant access if the HD shits the bed AND I have a full working OS in case the internet goes wonky and won't let me access anything anymore with Win XP. (at the time, some websites were actually telling me to get off their site because my OS was out of date. The freaking nerve of them.

So yes Virginia, there is a Linux that works out of the "box" and it's called Linux Mint.

Why does Data have rank?

Data is a robot so why does he have rank? It doesn't help the Starfleet because he's a robot. Does the army give rank to tanks? Does the ship's computer have rank? If his rank is some whimsical rank like giving dogs rank in the police force why not make him an ensign or some shit?

Data is a robot so the status and increased pay of increased rank does not motivate him in any way to be better. Rank in the military is a motivational tool to make people perform to their best possible ability.

So his rank doesn't help Starfleet, or him in any possible way.

Thirdly, Data is a complete fuckup. He would either be busted down to buck private or kicked out of Starfleet entirely if he was human. Every time some thing affects his neural processor he turns into the most destructive douchebag in the history of Starfleet.

Like usually if you're given an order countermanding a previous order by someone else, it needs to be by someone of equal or greater rank to be a lawful order. (in practice you just inform the officer of who and what rank gave you the previous order and let them deal with it.)

And you are correct also because Rank is an indicator of experience and skill and in a Robot (cyborg?) experience doesn't count for much unless they do not have an upgrade system and skill can be loaded in as necessary.

Somehow (I have just a postage stamp sized lawn in front. 8'x60' and a pain in the ass to mow) a bunch of extra dirt got dropped on this lawn at some time. It was all lumpy and no consistent form of grass grew it was a lawn of weeds.

So last month I had the whole thing roto tilled and then the guy scraped off about 6" of dirt so that is was now flat and slope away slightly from the house.

But I still have to do that last 3" of tilling and then fertilizing and then sowing of grass seed.

Meanwhile what I have is 8'x60' of bare dirt.

So get off my dust bowl.
