I read an article the other day about parties where one person is HIV-infected and no other party-goer knows the HIV-carrier's identity and they all have sex. Sort of a viral Russian Roulette game.

I was thinking that the drugs to treat HIV are pretty expensive, but I guess these party-goers don't have to worry about things like that. Like that Honduran woman who flew into the U.S. last month to have her Zika-infected and deformed baby here, they'll just dump the costs off on the U.S. taxpayers. After all, we've got plenty of money to burn, and it's not as if any of us are struggling to pay our own medical bills/insurance premiums, right?

46 Good Morning Horde!

Some minor updates in the polling today.

This is actually slightly good news for Trump, so bear with me.

IBD/TIPP released their latest poll in their series, which has been included in the RCP average. The result is Clinton 45/Trump 40. With this factored in, the RCP average moves to Clinton leading 44% to 42%.

However, the last time this poll was released at the end of April, Clinton was leading Trump 47% to 40%. So in a month, Clinton has shed 2 points of support in the poll, despite wrapping up the nomination.

This reflects the continued trend of voters to not want to vote for her, and move into the undecided column. Something that has been an obvious trend for the last 6 or 7 weeks.

Trump's support remains unchanged, he is still Mr. 40%. It is possible that this is a process the voters are going through, much like the Republican voters did 2 months ago. When all options are no longer available, they finally faced reality and decided to vote for Trump.

It is possible the independents are going through a similar thought process. First deciding they can't vote for Hillary, but they haven't made the shift to voting against her yet.

I still believe that Trump needs to make a play for attracting their votes, but he hasn't done so yet. And Hillary continues to own the airwaves and is hammering him, unopposed, regarding his statements about and to women. Without some form of a response, his numbers will likely stay at 40%.

Gray skies are gonna clear up,
Put on a happy face;
Brush off the clouds and cheer up,
Put on a happy face.

Take off the gloomy mask of tragedy,
It's not your style;
You'll look so good that you'll be glad
Ya' decide to smile!

Pick out a pleasant outlook,
Stick out that noble chin;
Wipe off that "full of doubt" look,
Slap on a happy grin!

And spread sunshine all over the place,
Just put on a happy face!
Put on a happy face
Put on a happy face

And if you're feeling cross and bitterish
Don't sit and whine
Think of banana split and licorice
And you'll feel fine

I knew a girl so gloomy
She'd never laugh or sing
She wouldn't listen to me
Now she's a mean old thing

So spread sunshine all over the place
And put on a happy, happy face

56 Good morning all.

From this date in 1944- near Rome, Italy

The EZ Dog Journal

June 7, 1944
The front is moving so fast we have lost all contact. Occasionally, as we drive around, we find a battalion here and a battalion there, but in general their orders are to keep as far forward as possible. Tarquinia was entered today and should fall soon.

Paul and I spent a very enjoyable evening at one of the finer Italian homes here near Rome. A very beautiful garden is what prompted us to look the place over. An old gardener and his wife first showed us the place - and when we came back later we talked to the owner - a well educated lady, about 35, who spoke very good English - and her cousin - not bad looking, and 20, who spoke a "leetle" English. We just relaxed for a while - stretched out in big easy chairs - for the first time since we landed on the beachhead.

75 Yesterday, I drew a comparison between Brexit and our government.

Today, I'm going to try to make it a bit clearer.

I actually don't believe that it is a coincidence that what is getting ready to happen in Britain and what is trying to get off the ground in this country is happening nearly simultaneously. I believe this because I think there are direct parallels between how the European Parliament stifles democracy, and how our government has evolved into its wholly unaccountable self. Both are virtually unanswerable to their 'constituents' and both, because of bureaucratic inertia, are incapable of carrying out the functions of government and therefore have enlisted the aid of technocrats and plutocrats to perform these tasks and to whom they've become ultimately answerable.

So here is what I consider to be the direct comparison:

Britain sees fortress Europe as anti-democratic (which it most certainly is) and has decided to attempt to take their liberty back through a referendum to leave.

The analogue in this country is: For the most part, a singular group of people (disaffected Republicans) has awakened to the fact that that their very representatives (specifically) and government (generally) are no stretch of the imagination, answerable to them and almost certainly hold them in contempt.

The analogue to the Brexit referendum in this country is the attempt to reacquire some semblance of liberty through an Article 5 convention.

Britain, at least, has managed to organize and formalize their attempt while we are still struggling to organize ours.

Again, I would recommend the Brexit - The Movie on Youtube. It is very compelling.

We screwed up in the 90's. Pushing NATO eastward just ticked off the Russians. Stationing large numbers of troops in Poland and Ukraine would not have helped things. We should have worked with Poland, Ukraine, etc. to form their own independent coalition and then put Ukraine's nukes under the control of that coalition. The Russkies wouldn't be seizing territory, but they wouldn't feel threatened by NATO encroachment.

This is one of the big reasons why I can't fully jump on board with libertarianism. Or more specifically big "L" libertarianism. They say they want to end the welfare state but at the same time they want to legalize all drugs and have open borders. I fully understand the argument that adults should be able to do with their bodies whatever they want regarding drugs. But the problem is with the welfare state we would be paying for a lot people's drug habits.

The welfare state isn't going to go away but they want the drug legalization first before shrinking the welfare state which to me is putting the cart before the horse.

With open borders, I guess if we didn't have a welfare state we wouldn't have many illegal immigrants even if the borders were open. But who can really say what would happen in that scenario?

142 You all should know, with this judge thing, the question isn't even up for debate: Of course he is biased.

And I'd say he was biased no matter what case he was ruling on and not knowing a damned thing about him.

You all need to get over the notion that our judges and our judicial system has any fairness or objectivity left.

It does not.

Sure, a new judge may strive mightily to be unbiased. But, after hundreds of cases, thousands of briefs--they don't have time any more.

They're human and they start looking for short cuts. And if they get it wrong, "oh well, you can take it on appeal." (That's almost an exact quote I have heard judges say.)

In the case of this judge--and every judge--it's going to become their biases; their beliefs, their political philosophy, their background.

And your lead-pipe lock of the week: A liberal judge is guaranteed to make their decision first and cast about for evidence later.

Uhh.. who says we have to house them?

We do not need an active force as big as we have.

As for tropical training, send them to Florida..

But this sentence is the most telling:

"Do you have any idea how much it would cost to display US Power World Wide without forward operating bases? "

As a member of our armed forces, I can see why you feel like that.. But I say screw that.. we do not need to "display US World Power". We need to defend our borders and defend our strategic interests as needed.

If someone fucks with us, we have:
Nukes
cruise missiles
the best freakin' air force in the world
the best navy in the world

but you want to depend first and foremost on a 1940 strategy of having "boots on the ground" in every freakin' corner of the world.

It would be stupid to retreat into the borders of the US and give up our dominant position in the world as it's sole superpower.

The U.S. can easily ask for (demand) a fee of 10% of the GDP of protected countries per year for the service.

That would bring in about 3 trillion a year, making our military a wise investment.

Aside from everything, you pretty much have it nailed.

Look, without a base in Okinawa our ability to project power in the East China Sea is zilch. If ever we are in another Pacific war we would have to fight to win that base back, with guarantees we could. Without power projection any war will be fought in San Pedro instead. Fortress America is now a myth, because the Chinese and Russians are as well armed as we and the NORKS can launch nuclear-tipped missiles from submarines.

History repeats itself, Hegel said (I believe). And the next Pacific war (which will come) will require a base in Okinawa. To pretend otherwise is crazy talk.

248 Had a bit of an epiphany at work last night....

The idea of withdrawal or succession of one or more geographical areas of the U.S. might end up looking less like the First American Civil War, and more like certain recent European analogues.

Excluding the Velvet Revolution, I can't think of one that didn't entail some bloodshed. Jugoslavia might have been settled far sooner than it was - especially the Bosnian and Kosovo (the latter a story for another day; it was sort of like having a large population of recent Mexican immigrants wanting the border areas to 'revert' to Mexico) chapters - but for foreign involvement.

I don't think we'd have much of that here,

Eastern Ukraine is a very workable model - the central government is no longer responsive to its people in the East, and comes to view their opposition as outright treason.

And the early chapters of the war in Donbass and other areas was exactly what turning a professional army, backed up by paramilitary extremists, loose on civilians looks like.

Indeed. There was a moral component to the Civil War --- slavery --- that made it more palatable for brother to turn against brother. Even at that, the war was unpopular at the time, which was why Lincoln had to resort to conscription and near-martial law.

296 Whose side do you think they would be on? I could see all three of those powers favoring the dissolution of the USA. Heck, I'd be counting on Russia to supply guns to the seccessionists.

Short, only somewhat flippant answer: Their own. Think of our situation as being post-WWII Germany. China would want to secure its economic interests, Mexico would go all "Greater Aztlan", and a rotating bunch of Third World bastards would help "secure" the Acela corridor and nearby territories while muzzies pour in to establish the Sultanate of al-Amrik. All of which would be invited in by the globalists in DC to help "restore order", naturally.

This is why, when I go over it as a purely intellectual exercise unlikely to affect actual events, who has control of the nukes becomes of critical interest...

I suppose this is as good a time as any to recount the old story that the Victorian artist John Ruskin refused to consummate his wedding night because his bride, Effie Gray, had pubic hair and Ruskin - so the story goes - who had only ever seen Greek statuary, was disgusted by the sight. Other writers, however, speculate that Ruskin's disgust was because Gray was either menstruating or had a bad body odor. But we shall never know.

358 I've got an evil idea. I think we need a Swiftian-tract, except less satirical, and more to trick the Left into doing what we want them to do. The trick is, of course, convicing them that all of us filthy kulaks and dissenters of their glorious collective need to be rounded up and sent to a self-sustaining prison colony to be established on Mars, so that they can have the Earth to themselves to build their Worker's Paradise. They must think that this is a trick of their own devising, to get more kulaks to self-identify and volunteer for exile, so as to stop holding back progress with their ungoodthink.

Man can make heaven of hell or hell of heaven. People live in the far Northern reaches of Alaska and in Phoenix AZ, and for some reason don't move to fairer climates, but nobody enjoys North Korea, a relatively comfortable temperate slice. Well, except for Kim Jong Un, but he doesn't matter, and everyone agrees on that except for Kim Jong Un.

I'd rather live in an pod on Mars, and be free, than live in their prison planet, which it's starting to look like they'll build no matter what.

369 126 119 ghey dudes deliberately trying to get HIV to be more authentically ghey or something along those lines.

It's actually kind of fascinating if you're into deviant psychology. My theory is, HIV positive men still wanted to get laid, so they created this whole thing about how sexy and authentically ghey it was to have HIV.

Think of it as analogous to the seen in 'Billy Madison' where Adam Sandler wets his pants and tells all the kids, 'It's the coolest!'

Wasn't that what happened with the Victorian art critic John Ruskin? Having only seen nudes in paintings, he was disgusted by seeing the real thing on his wife.

380 We won in Vietnam

South Vietnam was still there and there was a peace treaty.

Then in 1974, one year later, the Democrats took control here.

They violated the treaty and refused to honor our commitments.

South Vietnam was then conquered by North Vietnam in 1975.

381 Interesting study on immigration, assimilation, and political ideology:

http://tinyurl.com/zja6xht

I'll just quote from the conclusion:

Immigrants have very similar political and policy views when compared to
fourth-generation Americans. For those policy and political questions
where first-generation immigrants have statistically significant
differences of opinions, the second and third generations do not vary
compared to the fourth generation, meaning that political assimilation
is complete by the second generation.

Posted by: chemjeff at June 07, 2016 10:06 AM (uAvJJ)

382 Is assimilation complete or is the politics changed? Any thoughts as to difference in immigrants (ie from oppressive regimes versus economically motivated)?
