Hemingway "rebutted" Trump's claim that his judge is a Mexican by pointing out that the judge is an American. Someone should put some knowledge to her regarding dual citizenship.
Yes, the judge was born in America, so under existing constitutional interpretation, he was an American citizen at birth. However, his parents were both Mexican citizens, which means the judge was a Mexican citizen at birth. Posted by: Anon Y. Here's a true thing about me. My wife and I have the same last name. Her family came from Russia/Poland/Germany and was "Americanized" into my relatively common Scots-Irish last name. In fact, we met at a bookstore where I was a Manager and she was a part-time employee. The second day she was there someone asked me if "my sister" was the new girl in Non-Fiction. (I knew that couldn't be right. My sister has a lot of good qualities, but she's not exactly a bookstore type of gal.)

"Landmark California bill" would prosecute climate change skeptics. You want to hear this? "A landmark California bill," writes Valerie Richardson, "gaining steam would make it illegal to engage in climate-change dissent, clearing the way for lawsuits against fossil-fuel companies, think-tanks and others that have 'deceived or misled the public on the risks of climate change.'" Levin added that this proposed legislation represents "totalitarianism, pure and simple" and thanks to "a clownish -- clownish President," things like this are becoming more and more frequent... I've already listened. Enjoyed the conspiracy talk and the shadow people discussion. I disagree with Mollie Hemingway and Ace to a lesser extent taking issue with Trump's questioning of the judge's objectivity vis a vis the Trump University case. I think it's very pertinent that the judge is connected to La Raza.
Granted, I think Trump should make an issue of that instead of him being of Mexican heritage. But as Ace has said many times Trump is very blunt and is going to put things in the worst possible light. Thanks for the podcast Ace. Thanks to Andy for putting it together. He later told the FEC it was a joke, and the FEC staff report on the issue noted that Huckabee even changed his demeanor when he said it to reinforce that he wasn't serious. "We conclude that an objective listener would not reasonably have understood that Huckabee in fact solicited million-dollar contributions. Rather, he appeared, to be making a humorous aside in the course of his speech," said the just released staff report that recommended that a complaint against the former Arkansas governor be dismissed. The two Democrats backed legal enforcement of the claim that Huckabee was actively urging supporters to contribute more than the legal limits of $2,700. The complaint against Huckabee said that he was actually soliciting big dollar contributions for an affiliated political action committee, but he never mentioned it in his speech. a short story i'm trying to read, but not yet finishing, is algeron blackwoods "The Willows," which I've heard called one of the seminal works in the Weird Horror genre.
The beginning is all about establishing his authority as he describes a sailing adventure down the Danube, and that's all well done, and I'm very satisfied he knows what he's talking about. >>>100 Hey Ace, did you see this crap about Marvel making Captain America a Nazi?
http://bit.ly/1srUBUR SMMFH! ... yes I ignored it. Comic books people are carnival barkers and have been doing the Crazy Cover Gambit for 100 years -- some crazy thing on the cover like "Captain America -- A NAZI?!!!?" Then of course you buy it, and after reading the six comics in the series, you find out he was (get this) undercover the whole time, to get to the heart of a very deadly plot. (And for some reason Hydra just immediately accepted that Captain America had turned Hydra.) It's silly. Heroes are always dying, or getting new outfits, or new powers, or getting married, or whatever. Within six months it's all undone. I don't promote silly carnival barking like this, especially from Marvel, which is part of the Disney/ESPN/ABC Communist Octopus. Deny them the "heat" and "buzz" they seek. a friend is recommending Mark Twain to me, maybe Innocents Abroad.
Twain is okay in small doses, but his continuing snark and mockery of everything gets a bit wearying to me. I liked about half of Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, until i got tired of him mocking courtly behavior, chivalry, the calvinist work ethic, Americans, and pretty much everything, everywhere. After a while you stop sounding wise and clever, and start sounding elitist and snobbish. Look at how smart I am and how little and stupid everyone on earth is compared to me... Hemingway had his "entourage." He surrounded himself with a bunch of drunk fishing buddies all the time. No wonder his wives were pissed off. No one has successfully explained why he was discharged from the hospital when he was still doing so shitty and why no one hid the guns. I thought Margauex was doing well when she moved to Santa Monica. But it wasnt long before she couldnt pay her rent and was being evicted. She fell off the wagon and planned her suicide. I wish she had planned it so her body was found sooner. She had started to decompose and it was not a pretty sight. Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at June 03, 2016 01:56 PM (iQIUe) 119

I don't know that he'd do it. he's too big. also there are some guys that do this a lot who come ready for a podcast like pros. Like, they're there to fill your time. Which is a pro thing -- they come prepared to be the dominant voice, and give the host a break. that's a typical imperative for a guest, and usually the host wants a chance to be quiet and let the guest take over the show. I actually don't want that, though. I want a conversation. I don't really want or need to be sidelined, as I'm only doing 90 minutes a week. I'm not doing 3 hours a day where i really need a guest to come on and spell me for 30 minutes. so when it comes to some guys I consider pro, I'm not all that psyched to have them on. Just got back from taking Mom to a nice lunch.
I stopped by a pawn shop, looking for a cheap weedeater. I haven't been in there in a few years. I couldn't help but notice one glaring difference between then and now. The 100 linear feet of glass display cases that used to be stocked full of overpricedused watches & gold jewelry are now almost completely full of guns. Mostly new, but some used mixed in. I don't think it's that -- I think it's that that's what they're trained to do, because a guy doing a 3 hour show WANTS a 20 minute break where a hired gun comes in and just takes over for a while while he eats a sandwich. but i'm doing 90 minutes a week. the other thing about the Pro Model is that it's so canned.
I don't need someone explaining his latest column to me. Chances are, I read it. So it's like a canned thing. Just a repetition of something pre-written. The only interest for me in the podcast format is the unpredictability of it, and that one person could say something interesting that spurs a memory or response in the other, etc. Minus that actual dynamic, that actual dialogue, why not just write an essay (or read that essay)? What's the point? The only thing of interest in a live conversation is the fact that it is, allegedly, a live conversation. Posted by: ace at June 03, 2016 02:32 PM (dciA+) 241

a short story i'm trying to read, but not yet finishing, is algeron blackwoods "The Willows," which I've heard called one of the seminal works in the Weird Horror genre.
The beginning is all about establishing his authority as he describes a sailing adventure down the Danube, and that's all well done, and I'm very satisfied he knows what he's talking about. I like that sort of travelogue story. But I'm a ways in and nothing creepy has really happened and I don't know if Willows are going to wind up being scary or what. Posted by: ace at June 03, 2016 01:51 PM (dciA+) Reading Algernon Blackwood is a lot like reading 19th-early 20th century ghost stories. A lot of nothing, a lot of exposition, maybe something doesn't seem quite right, maybe everything seems alright, and then in the last couple of pages- BOOM- something happens. In the good, AB stories that something throws a light back on what you thought you knew, and can give you chills. On the bad ones, meh. I don't remember "The Willows", though I read it or actually any AB stories. I'm guessing I wasn't very impressed. Posted by: naturalfake at June 03, 2016 02:37 PM (0cMkb) 253

I don't really think it was difficult to keep track of who was who, and even if I didn't remember exactly voice was whose, It wasn't like I was listening to a robot arguing with itself. Maybe this is because I listen to a lot of podcasts. As long as I can identify unique voices throughout the podcast itself, I'm not particularly picky if I know which name I assign to each voice. I've listened to the GLOP podcast with Johna Goldberg, Rob Long and Jon Podhoretz, and after listening to them for over a year, I still can't tell Rob and Jon apart, and I don't care. When the cast whittled back down to you and Drew, I felt like the two of you were just straining for time a lot of the time. The guest show with Ben was really good. I like having a reasoned difference of opinion between people who can make coherent arguments. I'd like to hear more in that vein. Find someone in the right-wing "thought sphere" who wrote something whose opinion you disagree with (to some degree), and talk about it. Even though Justified is over, as a Peabody Award winning international movie and television star I'm far too busy to ever do the podcast again.

I'm only twelve minutes into the podcast and I'm enjoying the banter, thoroughly.

Jane D'Oh, I too hope the kitteh comes out of the vet's hale and hearty. I'm owned by a 12-year-old Calico that's tipping the scales at 27# now. The vet checked her out and she's fine health-wise and then he put her on a diet of expensive low-cal food that is apparently only available in his office.
I'm thinkin' it might be a good idea to cut back on her Häagen-Dazs and dungeness crab too. Posted by: Hank at June 03, 2016 02:52 PM (KFvpb) 282

there is a spectrum of people who listen and people who are just waiting to talk again.
On that spectrum, I am a 90% of the way to "just waiting to talk again." I am just a little listening-curious. This is sort of why I don't like guests like, um, let's say his initials are JG. I don't care enough to listen, and he makes me wait too long to talk again. Posted by: ace at June 03, 2016 02:57 PM (dciA+) 284
A future possibility for the book club -
Larry Correia writes the Monster Hunter series. Four books (and the fifth about Frankenstein's Monster as a government agent) focusing on Monster Hunters, International, a private company that hunts monsters for profit. Lots of guns, gratuitous violence, and complaining about the government (except in the aforementioned fifth book, of course). John Ringo, who's a pretty successful science fiction writer in his own right, finally let himself get persuaded to read the first book. He ended up tearing through it, and then messily devoured the other four books. And then his muse started nagging him. A few months later, he contacted Larry Correia, and essentially told him, "I wrote a couple of books in your Monster Hunter setting, and I plan to make this a trilogy. Would it be alright if I had them published?" Larry graciously agreed (because that'd be kind of like having Michael Bay volunteer to help out with the pyrotechnics in your next film), and the first of the books - Monster Hunter Memoirs: Grunge - goes on sale in August. The first few chapters are available for preview over at Baen's website. Posted by: junior at June 03, 2016 02:59 PM (mUM5y) 285
ace: "I don't know how to politely say to a pro, 'You're not coming in as an expert, you're just coming in as a guy we're going to talk with."
That seems like a perfect invite, actually. Say it just like that. Set the parameters exactly like that and, to promote your own humility, even start with the "I don't know how to politely ask you, a pro, to..." Seriously, that seems like a perfectly fine invite to get them to loosen their collars a bit. But I think I get your drift. The industry has defined expectations and they are pros at being "on". It isn't local, 3:00 AM talk radio, so they've been trained to do things a certain way. The mold is set. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at June 03, 2016 03:05 PM (1CroS) 286

I guess the next step is Ace eventually alienates enough people that he can only get hardcore Trumpers on as guests. We're weeks away from the full Little Green Ace site.

"Gutfeld do the podcast"
Gutfeld did at least one ace podcast many years ago, before Redeye. He was hawking an amusing paperback book he'd written and had boxes of in his house for $1. He was a very good guest and had a lot to say, though maybe wasn't doing the whole conversational thing ace looks for. Would love a guest appearance by AlexTheChick so could see who would win the f-bomb contest. Posted by: waelse1 at June 03, 2016 10:31 PM (8jtP6) 290
