6 Woke up early here on the left coast.

Shortly, I will go to cast an early vote, and will vote for the first and hopefully only time in my life for a Communist. (He says he's a "socialist", but _honeymooning in the USSR_? Give me a break.) It's come to this.

Then, later on this year, I'll go vote again, and also work like a dray horse on registration and GOTV, for a preposterous preening popinjay whom I consider unfit to be President. It's come to this, redux.

I get the training part. I do. But we are in the midst of some epic rain and flooding. Extremely dangerous waterways. Why, why in Hell, risk lives in a situation like that when local/state police are blocking off water-crossings and arresting those that defy the barriers? You can practice next week or a month from now when the risk has subsided.

24 "It's nothing compared to what our military personal are dealing with though."

I was morosely reflecting upon the fatal Blue Angels crash.

It's not only the pilots who are supposed to be elite in the Angels organization, but also the maintainers. The Navy's best available wrench turners.

And the jets are intended to be kept up to the most meticulous standard. Far above and beyond normal fleet level preventative maintenance.

Plus, the Hornet itself is one of the most reliable and safe airframes in the military inventory. One which should handle an engine-out scenario with a predictable return to base.

When despite all that, there is a smoking hole in the ground with an aviator's dead body in the middle of it? That's a diagnostic sign of bad, bad trouble in the dot-mil flying community.

30 Good morning all.

From this date in 1944. D-Day approaches while the Allies continue to sweep toward Rome.

EZ Dog Journal

June 3, 1944
We moved CP to Velletri today - in a beautiful villa (running water and electric lights) on the side of a very beautiful hill. There is very little sign of war here - a welcome relief. Velletri itself is badly torn up but we are about a mile out of town. Our villa was formerly occupied by members of the German high command. They moved out day before yesterday. This morning our wire crew captured a Kraut 1st Sgt in the air raid shelter that goes with the house.

The front is moving forward so fast we hear only faint sounds from the front. Lanuvio was cleaned up today and troops move on to Genzano, below Lake Nemi, and Rocca di Papa north of the lake. II Corps advanced within 7 miles and probably less of Rome. Our armor was last reported South of Lake Albano. Today the front as a whole has moved farther than any other since the 3d Div took Cori.

31 In other unreported news the Atlanta Streetcar, a liberals pet project here in Atlanta, is about to go belly up and the state Georgia may force it to close anyways if it doesn't. After about 2 years of operation it has caused nothing but chaos in the construction and operation. There are few riders despite low and no fares and incredibly it is losing money hand over fist. There have been numerous reports of mismanagement, corruption and financial fraud. from the beginning not to mention drivers without proper qualifications except the right friends.

Incidentally, our firm worked on the engineering of the maintenance building. It was obvious this was a govt boondoggle from he get-go. I have rarely seen so much incompetent micro-management and excessive rules leading to out of control cost overruns. Although two other places we have done projects come close: Atlanta Zoo and Atlanta airport, both semi-govt entities. What a coincidence.

I'm sure the high speed rail the libs are always pushing will also be a similar model of efficient project management and execution.

One would guess, wrongly, that the Army would have learned the lesson by now of taking soldiers in heavy combat rig into situations involving deep swift water. There are historical accounts going back to WWII (and probably even earlier) of such arrangements not ending well.

At some point, there has to be an order to pre-emptively doff the bulky gear, to give troops some possibility of water survival if things go badly.

44 Good morning Morons!

Some minor polling news this morning, but confirmation of something I've been saying for a few weeks.

The RCP average remains Clinton leading by 1.5%. The only new poll was a new Rasmussen release showing Clinton at 39 and Trump at 38.

This shows two important things.

1) The Rasmussen poll from two weeks ago with Trump ahead by 5 was an outlier. Drudge was happy to blast that poll out in 120 point headline type, but he has been avoiding mentioning this polling series since, since it doesn't fit his preferred narrative.

2) This poll was conducted completely after the State Department IG released his report, where the previous poll in the series was done before that occurred. End result is that BOTH Clinton and Trump dropped a point in the poll. IMO this reflects a general disgust with both candidates among the electorate and people saying "I don't want to vote for either of them". Clinton's numbers can't be driven any further down by Trump's attacks, and he isn't seeing the benefit of those undecideds moving toward support of him. Again, he isn't giving this segment of the electorate (almost a quarter of the voters) a reason to vote for him. After the worst possible week for Clinton, short of being indicted, Trump not only remains "Mr. 40%" he actually lost support.

The big question is what will happen after Tuesday. The Bernie supporters will need to decide if they are going to swallow their pride and get in line behind Clinton, like the Cruz supporters did for Trump. I personally expect to see Clinton's numbers improve by about 5 points after the Dem primaries wind down.

I don't get the impression that ordinary Joes and Janes are even clued in as to all of these boondoggles. Not least because the boondoggles are smoothly glossed over by the media.

Over the weekend, I was talking to someone who lives in the SF Bay Area about the absolutely epic flustercluck that has been the rebuilding of the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge. Ridiculously late, terrifyingly over budget, rife with design and implementation flaws.

Their response: "Wut?"

When a private company foists overpriced shoddy merchandise upon the public, the media descend like bluebottle flies to a fresh corpse. When big government does the equivalent or worse thing to the public, the media ignore it, or minimize it. This is a phenomenon of long standing and of iron predictability.

Unfortunately most Americans will not support the only real fix: smaller govt. that does less. They always want more programs, more protection, more safety, more benefits, more fairness.... She let her Hillary mask slip, and thinks she did nothing illegal, the Republicans keep blocking everything Obama wants, and all Trump wants is to "Make America White Again".

Trump has a lot of faults, but racism? I don't see it. If he would have run as a Democrat, his Republican opponent would be getting all the racism charges. I guess being against illegal immigration and uncontrolled, un-screened Muslim immigration is racism. BLM; not racism. If it's a USB printer, then yes. Usually there's more than one USB port so you shouldn't need to detach the printer. It should (probably) bring up a menu on you computer screen asking what you want done with the files.

79 "I don't know what a 2GB USB is"

The USB port is very narrow and flat horizontally. It's what you plug your mouse into. On laptop it's very likely on the side of the unit. On a desktop it could be the front or back. You should have multiple USB ports.

You would plug it in, the computer would take few seconds to recognize it, and then you could access it just like a stored file on the computer.

vote that way and panic at the thought of actually having less govt."

The establishment GOP would like us to believe that there are two political parties, one of them being the "small government" party, and that they are that party.

Instead of there being merely two wings of the Permanent Bipartisan Fusion Party.

It just infuriated the local liberal loons during the very brief federal government shutdowns when I said that I couldn't detect any difference at all in my daily life from having severely truncated federal operations, and that this real-world example showed we could all get by perfectly well without Fedzilla.

How many Republican officeholders do any of you recall having made the same point during the shutdowns? QED.

The mostly peaceful protesters are bringing a lot on Never Trump to his side, however reluctantly, and some independents as well that would love to value diversity but can no longer ignore the destruction that illegal immigration has wrought on this nation. Unfortunately a wall, deportation and immigration enforcement are about 20 years too late. This will not end well. We are not deporting 20-30 million illegals without a huge fight and allowing them stay is the end of the country.

======================

Just think of the Blue Dog Democrat in Ohio who sees Hillary talking about shutting down coal, Bernie saying that socialism is the wave of the future, and a bunch of lefty radicals attacking Trump for his brazen style. Think about this lifetime Democrat (whose family has voted Democrat since the 1910s when they first came over to America) and imagine what he's thinking of doing in November.

The ideological bases of both parties will coalesce around their candidates (unless Democrats replace Clinton with Biden at the convention in which case, goodbye Bernie fans), and the murky middle will have to deal with the mess. Thinking of the portrait above, who would probably not be considered middle of the road by a pollster, where do you think the middle will be going?

I've never opposed Trump because I thought he would lose. I opposed Trump because I thought he could win (and very possibly win big). I just didn't want him as the standard bearer of the Republican Party and, by extension, Conservatism.

Fuck that.

I still won't vote for him (I live in SC...he's not losing this state no matter what I do, so leave me this one bit of value signalling), but Christ am I rooting for him.

The college where Trump will debate Hillary come September is an interesting case in point.
- Very recently involved in an H-Visa scandal for importing hundreds of South Asian IT workers to do jobs for which there is an ample supply of local talent. The Provost responsible is still on paid leave.
- University has 40 provosts; a huge number for a mid-sized university.

218 "Woman goes on rampage in store when EBT card is rejected"

There was a case a couple of years ago that illustrates the near future.

A state-level IT outsourcing fiasco resulted in all of the EBT cards being turned off for a particular city at the same time.

At Wal-Mart, which "progressives" hate despite it being the de facto distribution arm of the welfare state, this caused consternation. The local store manager called the Bentonville mother ship and said that he had hundreds of EBT-denied patrons getting ready to riot and destroy the store.

B-ville corporate told him to just give away whatever merchandise the dolebirds wanted. They were confident that the EBT would be turned back on shortly, and writing off an entire store's worth of inventory was cheaper than writing off the inventory _plus_ the premises of the store itself. A supremely rational business-case decision.

Except... what happens when this is not local, but statewide, or national?

And what happens when the Wal-Mart executives realize that the EBT will not be being turned back on any time soon?

Add onto it that they don't have a minority president that most of the country inexplicably considers likable at the top of the ticket, and you've got a recipe for completely turning off the middle of the country.

I really look forward to the exit poll data that ends up showing the gender gap changes. I'd expect that the female gap will largely stay the same, and maybe even shorten a bit, but the male gap explode in Republican's favor. Throw in the depressed black turnout and a breakdown of that vote that more closely resembles historical averages, and we're going to hear some interesting explanations from MSNBC.

You can see in multiple videos how the thugs take a swing at a Trump supporter and then quickly dash away to hide in the crowd. That works very well because the thugs know no one will take retribution on the entire crowd.

And it will continue to work time and time again. So the violence WILL continue because there is no way to stop it.

No anger.

ANGER!!!

Gone now. Response:

The comparison doesn't really fit because bills have a binary choice when they get to the floors of Congress. The congresscritters can either vote yes or no. In a presidential election there are more than 2 possibilities. It's not just Trump and Clinton on the ballot.

Now, effectively there are just two choices. One of these two people (assuming Clinton makes it past the convention, blah blah blah) will be our next president. My vote for Mickey Mouse will not change that, but I've been keenly aware of the potential power of third choices in elections since 2000. I was fifteen and couldn't vote, but the one excuse I heard, tangentially (I didn't give 2 shits about politics...I was 15), against voting for Alan Keyes was that he couldn't win the Republican primary, so don't bother. My ill formed internal response to that was: If everyone thinks that way but just actually voted for him instead, he'd win. Now, Alan Keyes did not lose because people thought he would, he lost because W. had a better organization and appealed to more people.

However, the lesson remains: I DO have a choice to go 3rd party. If I want to see the 2 party system we have actually break and reform, then I need to do more than just vote for Republicans. My protest probably won't do much of anything to actually advance that goal, but it has a better chance than if I vote Republican.

Q: Why are you jumping into the race?
A: I think competition is a good thing overall for any candidate, whether for an incumbent or a first timer. Baptism through fire helps make the candidate stronger. Having contact from people around the state for the past several months, from people who essentially wanted to see a choice in the Republican primary, that's why I'm doing this. The Murkowski family and my family are longtime friends. This is not based on anything other than wanting to make sure that conservative voters have a choice.

Q: So what's the choice? How are you different from Senator Murkowski?

A: That'll come out during the campaign. I'm not going to get into this too much into her record. I'm going to just put out what I believe. ... I won't be directly criticizing Senator Murkwoski. That won't be part of the campaign.

298 Blue Angels crash. It just might possibly be due to the age of the airframes. After 13 years flying the A-4, the Blues had a spate of fatal crashes in rapid succession and switched over to the F/A-18, a plane type they have been flying longer than they did the A-4. Perhaps time to use the T-45 Goshawk?

The Left has been thuggish for years - though ramped up during Obama's presidency. But we now have mobs telling us we are not allowed to have Trump as a candidate. Not a Trump fan, but who th f#ck are they to tell us who can and cannot be a candidate for office?

This is not intended to promote their candidate, it's meant to make it impossible to support another candidate, whether it's attacking people as they attend a rally, or harassing people wanting to host a fundraiser (like the tech CEO recently).

This was previously seen w/the Prop 8 stuff in CA - the systematic outing of supporters and attempting to destroy them (getting them fired, etc.).

Ann Althouse made a comparison between these protests and the Wisconsin protests in 2011.

How did those protests end up politically for the left in the state?

So...it works judicially with liberal justices, but it tends to crash and burn wildly with the actual electorate who ends up rejecting them and their candidates which leads to nominally more conservative justices.

Maybe this is an indication that we should "welcome" (for lack of a better term) this behavior in electoral seasons but do the opposite outside of it.

It doesn't work every time, everywhere but on the whole, leftist thuggery has been a pretty successful strategy.

Besides, it's much easier to get a bunch of LIV's and rent-a-thugs to smash shit up than it is to make a reasoned argument for a progressive socialist agenda.

330 If anyone wants to understand what is wrong with this country then you only need to review what happened (and is happening) in San Jose.

This is something the holdouts in the Anti-Trumper movement don't understand, the free trade folks don't get, and those that are obsessed on Trump's "vulgarity" and "ego".

The country is falling apart before our eyes. When people like me (and the millions of others) who say this country is headed for civil war, we are not kidding.

In a situation like that you need strong leadership willing to confront the danger, not appease it, not give in to it, not comfort it, not reason with it, but defend those who still like being Americans. We also need leadership who actually realize what a dangerous situation we are in, and are not obsessed with rebuilding Syria, free trade, cheap labor, Davos, etc. Those people are worrying about the menu and deck chair arrangement on the Titanic.

You won't have to worry about the constitution, or Syria, or wall street, or free trade when this country is no more.

The thing the Left recognises that the regular folks don't is that winning right now isn't as important as showing who is boss of the streets.
That actually has a trickle-UP effect, wherein police and DA's give wide latitude for behavior that would normally get jail time, as long as it is done by a mob and not an individual.

So, they storm the rotunda and stay for weeks, piss and defecate in the halls, break windows, assault legislators, and the legal response is to .....

LAUNCH PRE-DAWN RAIDS ON CONSERVATIVES BECAUSE FUCK YOU, THAT'S WHY!

Winning now isn't as important as knowing who the strong horse is.

So, you can't stop these particular Trump supporters from going to this particular rally.

I don't know if you can attribute the leftward shift of the American populace with borderline anarchic displays of unrest from leftist agitators.

Whenever they come to the forefront, the leftists seem to deliver more votes to Republicans. When they take a slow march through the institutions, speaking calmly about how America is terrible, they do much better.

It's worrisome in terms of actual policy implications, but that abuse of power element has been baked in the Trump cake for a year. Us Cruz supporters were saying it for months, and the Republican electorate as a whole decided to not care about it. Our two main choices are both going to abuse power.

My view on it tends to be more politically affecting (I'm listening to the podcast and they're talking about this right now). I think both Ace and Molly are wrong in that it will hurt him for 2 reasons.

1) The public won't care, especially when comparing a news story about Trump saying mean things about a judge to pictures of protesters flipping cop cars in response to Trump giving a speech.

2) The public doesn't care about intimidation anymore.

So, for those of us who value constitutional order, it's a definite problem. No one else will care, though (besides opportunistic Democrats).
