The guy who took out the rapist with a tire iron isn't a hero. He's just a citizen exercising his G-d given rights to self defense.

The fact that he took out a cancerous bacteria with a rap sheet as big as a phone book is just icing on the cake.

Of course, DeBolshevik has ordered him charged with manslaughter.

EZ Dog Journal from this date in 1944

June 1, 1944
Taylor took me for another inspection of gun locations. We have covered roughtly 1/4 of the E. locations and so far have found 40 guns. Gerry lost far more stuff than any of us dared hope for. Velletri is completely surrounded and should be cleaned up soon. 88 and 85 Divs moved up on our right to help the 3d Div on II Corps front. They are moving well up beside our 36th Div.

The rapist somehow gained access to the apartment and tore the clothes off a woman. She in turn, or her sister who was also in the apartment called the husband, a cab driver who was downstairs at the front of the building, he rushed up and cornered the perp in an elevator. A fight ensued between the two and the husband managed come out on top.

I'm getting some of the details wrong, but that is the gist of it.

52 When you're a spy, a tire iron is better than a gun. Guns make you stupid. Tire irons make you smart. Just remember that if you're going to pull out a tire iron, you better make it count. A sharp blow to the femur usually does the trick. A broken femur will be very painful and will incapacitate your enemy. But it won't kill him.

Sam, you know as well as I do that when you're a spy, sometimes you *want* the target alive. You may want to flip him into informing on the big fish. You may need his testimony in court. And then there's the fact that when you're a spy, *not* leaving dead bodies lying around Miami is always better than *leaving* dead bodies lying around Miami, when you're a spy. 96 Good morning Horde!

Just a minor change in polling news this morning. Quinniapiac finally decided to poll the race again, after a 2 month hiatus. They found a result that was fairly in line with other results with Clinton leading Trump 45-41. With this new poll in the mix, the RCP average changes again slightly to a 1.5% lead for Clinton. A tie.

There isn't a lot we can learn from the poll itself, it is a slight improvement for Trump, since the last time it was conducted he was losing 46-40, so there was a 2% shift. But with the last run of the poll being 2 months ago, it is hard to draw any real conclusion from changes in the polling series.

One thing to note however is that the poll was conducted completely after the IG report on Clinton's email had dropped. And she still can garner 45% support, even after the worst news cycle she could have and Bernie still in the race dragging her down. I can't see anything short of an actual indictment is going to bring her numbers any lower.

Which brings us back to Mr. 40%. I continue to believe that Trump needs to do something to move the numbers positively toward him. There are a large number of undecided voters out there, between 15 and 20% depending on the poll. Free media, attacks, and Clinton scandals have cemented him a solid base of 40%, but he needs to get 2/3rd or more of those undecideds to get off the fence and vote.

Honestly, I think part of his problem is that he has moved off of his message. Back in the fall he garnered a lot of support with his anti-immigration stance. Since then his campaign has shifted to personal attacks on opponents (or former opponents), without any "what am I going to do for you!" positive campaigning. He needs to get back to that, and start selling his populism to the middle class to move these numbers. I think he has driven Clinton's numbers as low as they can go (well she did most of it on her own), and put the voters in a "I don't want to vote for her" mindset. But he also needs to convince them to vote for him, rather than not vote. He doesn't have enough support to win if they don't vote.

This is unfortunately the problem with him not being a politician. I'm not sure he understands the second part of the dynamic he needs to win.

Called an AC place, who sent a youngish guy. He replaced the same part and pumped a bunch of Freon in. Turns it on, works fir five minutes, and the fan dies. Guy scratches his head, says sorry, here's the bill, we can credit it if we replace the whole thing.

After he leaves hubby decides to investigate some more and figures out the guy had "reversed the terminals." Which he unreverses and voila, we have AC again, for now.

Our central air went out last Friday. Outside unit shit the bed. Condenser shorted out and seized up due to leak. Had a guy out on Saturday- $7200.00 replacement cost for both outside and inside unit due to age. 13 yrs old. That unit that takes that type freon is no longer made. The new freon, (thanks epa!), operates at higher pressures. Inside unit may blow due to higher operating pressures that it wasn't designed for.

When I started work at DuPont in SC, there was a notoriously frugal chemical engineer in our group whose lunch in the cafeteria consisted of watered down ketchup and the then free saltine cracker packets. The crackers stopped being free when the cafeteria staff got wise to his scheme.

Bill, the engineer, was someone whose help you definitely welcomed when you had a persistent process problem that warranted round the clock coverage.

I agree that there are a lot of big corporation executives who are not up to the job.

My proposal is geared more to accomplished small businessmen, who have actually built something, made payrolls, took chances and made serious decisions that affect other's lives.

Just in my congressional district, I know 3 people who would love to run against our current congressman (an actual idiot), but can't because of financial reasons.

Each one owns his own business and can't afford to take such a drastic cut and additional expenses of keeping another residence.

There are two important elements to this proposal.

First is a basic increase in salary to a level equal with the responsibility.

Second is a bonus equal to the salary if a rigid set of goals is met. This would do more to reduce spending and bring value than any "conservative" program ever would.

297 Though the following might not be awful:

They hit certain goals, bonus goes into an account. They miss them, penalty from that account. The account cannot be touched, borrowed against, or anything, effectively it doesn't exist...until such time as they leave office (at which point by this plan they become ineligible for further time in office, ever). If the account goes into deficit at any time that person becomes ineligible for re-election (and is immediately liable for that debt).

Why don't you explain to the class why DC has the highest median income in the country and what your proposal would do to change that.

_____

Wow, did you miss the point or what?

DC doesn't have the highest median income by the way, NoVa does. And you're making my point for me. It's high because there is an entire industry of lobbyists whose jobs it is to essentially bribe congress. And with those bribes comes great wealth to the bribers.

Take away the need for money and a lot of the corruption goes away. It's really not that difficult.

315 Make the bonus payable for congressmen if the House passes all it's budgets on time and under a set amount (like 19% of the previous year's GDP). It has to be a hard dollar figure based on a previous year so that no games can be played with projections.

The bonus only gets paid if the House passes the budgets. This pressures all the congressmen to work to get it done.

Same thing in the Senate.

Or pay half the bonus for the individual House and Senate passage, then the other half when the bills are reconciled. That would put a ton of pressure on the leadership.

One thing is absolutely certain - what we are doing now isn't working. Big deficits, continuing resolutions, nobody looking back to cancel programs that aren't working or needed, we need to change.

This helps bring the change along.

Budgets done on time (make dates certain) and under (19%) of previous year's GDP.

Simple.

I'm glad you noted that NoVa is basically DC for purposes of this discussion so I didn't have to point out that there is no difference.

And no, I'm not making your point. The idea that corruption would disappear just because we raised the salary of elected officials to epic levels is just a premise you are throwing out. People don't stop being corrupt just because they make a lot of money. The Democrat nominee demonstrates that on a daily basis.

But we do have places like Brazil where the average salaries of government workers are enormous, they dwarf the salaries of of government workers in the US. And that includes Brazilian Senators who make more than their US counterparts.

Brazil is one of the most corrupt countries on the planet with corruption oozing out of every orifice. If you've ever done business in Brazil you will know that corruption is a way of life there. You don't do business in many sectors without somebody getting paid. The government is awash in bribe money.

We can change it.

All it takes is for an idea like this to fully formed and polished up in legislative language (there are people on the internet who know how to do that) and for a few influential blogs to start promoting it.

From there, it's picked up by Rush and Hannity, along with someone at Fox news.

Then all the politicians start getting asked about it and pretty soon, it's on the table.

What is to stop all of that brinksmanship and its concomitant terrible decision making from just being moved up to the deadline established by the bonus? They would make the same bad decisions, but just be paid more for doing so.

Because right now, the brinkmanship is a result of people not doing anything, which leads to last minute continuing resolutions.

With my plan, each budget would be due on a date certain (also, each budget would be separate date than the others so that it can get the media attention it deserves). The congressmen would need to make actual priority decisions to make the deadline, and thus be responsible for those decisions - just as it should be.

As a group, individual factions would be looking for old programs to cancel in order to make their new program fit the budget, or to eliminate to get under the total spending limit.

Peer pressure to make the bonus goals would be enormous.

354 On the NATO expansion thing, I think that is kind of Russian propaganda.

My understanding is that US leadership agreed to not expand NATO eastward INTO EASTERN GERMANY. Remember, this was in exchange for allowing Germany to unify. The idea was that the Soviet Union would give up Eastern Germany as a vassal in exchange for not losing that territory to NATO.

Why would NATO agree to not expand into any other country in exchange for Germany unifying? You know who really wanted Germany unified? Germans. Not so much everybody else. Why should the Polish give up protection so Germany can be unified, when they don't particularly want Germany unified?
