21 Here's an intellectual puzzle. Okay two.

If each individual vote carries no weight, then how is it that any candidate is ever elected? After all 0 + 0 = 0.

Corollary.

If not voting for Trump = a vote for Hillary, then why is it not also that not voting for Hillary = a vote for Trump?

I'll just be over there taking Venn lessons from Hillary's communication team.

...

i honestly don't care if anyone votes. I'm probably not voting, just because I don't feel like it (and it probably wouldn't matter anyway).

But I do think it's silly for major (and minor) rightwing outlets to peddle the fiction to people that a third term of Obama would be just swell.

I hate Obama. I hate the past 7 1/2 awful years. I think it's silly to claim "Oh I want more of that, because then in 2020 or 2024 we'll come *roaring* back!"

I didn't like that claim when it was peddled by the "TrueCon" types who didn't want to vote for Romney and I don't think it sounds any better from the #NeverTrumpers now.

Posted by: mike191 at May 27, 2016 01:28 PM (XKC1/)

62 I listened to the podcast. I didn't think Shapiro made a good case.

He kept conflating the GOP and the conservative movement. The GOP is barely right-center and definitely isn't beholden to conservatives. If Trump, who isn't conservative wins, how does that damage the current situation? It doesn't. Hillary winning is much worse in actual results.

Second, he's basically surrendered on the Federal gov't and is down to states pushing back. If this is the case, then why does Trump winning hurt conservatives? Trumps less likely to push the nonsense Hillary is going to push. And if conservatives have surrendered on the Fed, maybe they need to rethink why they lost.

When ace asked him about conservatives rethinking some of there stances and getting away from stock answers, he went into how in 2013 conservatives had already discussed on neo-con beliefs were dead. However, when discussing Trumps foreign policy, he simply sounded off neo-con shibboleths. Trump is an isolationist. He doesn't want to be in NATO, S. Korea, Japan, etc. He simply highlighted what ace had pointed out earlier. The GOPe conservatives are stuck in a loop and can't get out.

Again, not impressed by his arguments.

I'm 5 minutes away from the lakefront, but it's kind of a zoo during holidays. I think I'd rather go to the park.

Or - a baseball game, like I'm doing tonight. BTW, grammie I was at that 13 inning Cubs-Brewers game which the Cubs finally won because the winning one was (pitifully) walked in. (My luck to go to the one game of that series I thought we would win and instead it was the one we lost.) It was Wrigley North - it's quite odd feeling like an alien in your own ballpark.

154 Ben has really good points - BUT - he ignores two major points.

Immigration - it is destroying this country. Who the fuck cares about the "conservative movement" when the country is facing destruction under Hillary.

Judges - I am at the point in the podcast where you mentioned judges.

Hillary puts in 2-4 ultra liberal judges.. which opens up this country to any fascist executive orders for 50 years.

And little mentioned in this discussion is that Trump can't do anything without the help of Congress.

176 Ok, so what I get is Ben's argument is basically a Trump is a demagogue and and "failures"-- such as they will most certainly exist-- will eternally be conflated with / blamed on conservative principles assisted by media/cultural bias. Just like Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush and Bush.

The reason this doesn't hurt the likes of an Obama is because he is set as outside/above it all (h/t Limbaugh Theorem), any non-D president will never be afforded that luxury.

A phoenix can only rise from ashes.

Still, I'd rather have Trump anyway; if. only to annoy people I don't like (politically) and have more Frank Caliendo comedy.

While true, its not really about love. Its about where the power is and who has the love.

Trump is liked by the public, but hated by the ruling powers that be. Hillary is despised by everybody, but feared and bribed by the powers that be.

Plus, a Hillary win will be viewed and portrayed as a massive statement and mandate of staying the course, of continuing the ramming to the hard left. She won despite all the odds, to keep the communization of America going. OK apparently that's what America wants.

Trump winning won't have that momentum feeling, and he's despised by the leadership of his own party, and will by November be considered Pol Pots more evil uncle by the Democrats.

Not only is there a lot of overlap - cross-dresser vs. drag king vs. drag queen vs. butch - but it seems to boil down to this: my gender identity is informed by the clothes I am wearing today. 198 So anyway

Any of you morons familiar with Lawrence Kohlberg and his Stages of Moral Development? I'm having fun staging the lot of you...

.... there's always bias, of course. I'm seeing Ace's realist Trump stand as higher than the principled never Trump crowd for example, though by definition as Stage 5 types they can never see that.

Some of the web stuff is badly written so I'll explain: stage 5 is a principled one, but fettered. The kind of person who would immediately quit a job that contradicts their ethics in some way, for example. They will not Sully themselves.

Stage 6 has a universal outlook and a bias towards the greater good, while knowing they must get their hands dirty to achieve that. The dramatic over the top example is the German hiding a Jew during WW2, but it is also the person who works for positive changes behind the scenes or chooses a horrifying job in order to blow the whistle - like the guys that released the PP videos.

None of the above is to infer all fit in those categories. Several on both sides are lower still. The good news is people do learn and change.

219 Wow, Ace, it's good to have the old you back. You went bland for a good 5 years there.

Posted by: meerkat at May 27, 2016 04:39 PM (cnz5m)

220 Nice substantive conversation on the podcast missing (IMO) the most substantive issue. Conservatives have allowed the media (leftists) and educators (even more leftist) to define the term "Conservative." The media will preface Mitch McConnell in a news story as a "conservative." I, even, remember then doing the same with the arch liberal republican senator from Maine (forget her name at the present).

The moral of the story is that conservatism has lost the narrative because they have lost the ability to define themselves in the two most influential forums of our society. Until that changes it matters not who sits in the Oval office. Irreparable damage to the concept of conservatism can't be done by a brutish, ignoramus in the White House. The brand is already damaged, ill defined, and consistently perverted by those who teach, report, and pontificate. Ben Shapiro's argument falls flat because he isn't willing to concede that the brand is already harmed and will continue to be so as long as true conservatives allow the media and the academics to define them.

Posted by: OrsonSnow at May 27, 2016 04:40 PM (e0H9w)

221 Wow, Shapiro talks a little too fast.

I was a bit disappointed that Ace's point about introspection from the elites seemed to get avoided. Shapiro admits neo-con rebuttals were already happening, but what about the rebuttal that is the nomination of Trump?

Has anybody compared how many hours of "The Apprentice" were watched by political leaders versus the avg. citizen? I know I watched only a little bit by accident. It was a popular show.

Have any of the NeverTrump leaders showed any inclination that they might be out of touch with voters? Have they made a commitment to explaining potential voters why they shouldn't vote for a guy like Trump next time? And understanding why they voted for him this time? Surely this is already being done by the politicians who plan to win in the future.

One further advantage of Trump over Hillary (as always with R vs. D) is that Congress and the Press won't pull any punches attacking Trump unconstitutional actions.

223 Has anyone told Ben he talks too fast? He goes into stuttering Porky Pig mode. Two of my favorite people. I mean this. But Ben must be shut off until he works through this episode. The party, the party, the party, Ben, that's the thing, there IS NOT PARTY that represents conservatives throughout the land and therefore no worthwhile party. Ben still hasn't internalized that Trump is the signal the Republican part as Ben knows and loves it is gone.

And Ben coming to understand that out loud in stuttering rapid staccato is intolerable. Work it out, Ben.

Actually nice hearing both. It'll be even better when Ben heals.

226 Shapiro suffers from the same mental defect that most other #Nevertrump people do. On the one hand he says Trump has no policies and the ones he does have he will contradict himself in a week. One the other hand they criticize him on the detail of his polices and how it will make America worse off. So which is it really, he won't enact what he says, or he will enact it and it's bad that he does so? These are the confused points of a person who has been rendered completely irrelevant by Trump. No one is calling him asking for advice, or asking him to write stories. He's discovered he's nobody and he blames Trump, in every way for that.

Posted by: Mr Black at May 28, 2016 12:50 AM (+/vrF)

227 I'm wondering what exactly the plan for reunification of the party is going to be after hillarys reign.

If they think they can disenfranchise conservatives who are willing to vote trump to deny hillary the presidency and scotus picks and then we are all just going to have a big hugfest they are seriously mistaken.

So since we haven't passed the GOP purity test will the new unified party be pulling new voters from the Dem amnesty army? Syrians? Or will you be building them from legos? Because I don't think its going to be feasible to recover all the voters the puritan's are driving out of the party right now. I hear people say trump will ruin the party.. as they continue to ruin the party by driving people out.
