As an addendum to the Easy Dog Journal (if I may), on this day in 1944, Cpl. Corado Ciarlo was killed in action in the Anzio breakout somewhere south of Rome. He was one month shy of his 21st birthday. His story was featured in Ken Burns' "The War." RIP Babe. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at May 27, 2016 07:49 AM (p4UlV) 3

Fridge repair help please.
My old Kenmore side by side water dispenser is not just leaking - it's flowing water. We turned off the water shutoff valve going into the fridge for now. Last year we had a problem with it dripping, and with horde advice we checked the house water pressure and sure enough it was way too high, so we fixed that. The house water pressure is still good. So what can we fix in the fridge water dispenser? Thanks. Posted by: @votermom at May 27, 2016 07:55 AM (7lVbc) Posted by: J.J. Sefton at May 27, 2016 07:56 AM (p4UlV) 11

Barack Obama on Friday paid tribute to the "silent cry" of the 140,000 people killed by the world's first atomic bomb attack and sought to renew attention in his unfulfilled vision of a world without nuclear weapons, as he became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima.
Has the queen visited Pearl Harbor? Or Wake Island? Or the Philippines? Nope that wouldn't be anti-American. Obama did not apologize, instead offering, in a carefully choreographed display, a reflection on the horrors of war and his hope that Hiroshima would be remembered as the beginning of a "moral awakening." Carefully choreographed displayed of his usual anti-American crap Posted by: TheQuietMan at May 27, 2016 07:57 AM (45oDG) 16

His mother refused to accept his death. Bless her loving soul. Posted by: Grampa Jimbo at May 27, 2016 08:09 AM (1ijHg) Along with "Shoah," I make it a point to watch "The War" every Memorial Day but I have not done so in the past 2 years because I find myself sobbing uncontrollably by the end of each episode. I thought just the opposite would happen but it just got worse and worse each year. Babe Ciarlo's story mirrors my uncle's in many ways, so it hits somewhat near to home. Aside from one moment, the show is miraculously devoid of moral equivalency and leftism. The big exception being how blacks and Japanese Americans were treated, which in fairness was a big part of the story of the home front during the war. It is very much worth seeing, despite being a Ken Burns film. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at May 27, 2016 08:24 AM (p4UlV) 90

Gah! Obama's speech reads like a HS student's wisdom - cannot believe anyone ever thought this guy was eloquent:
Nations arise telling a story that binds people together in sacrifice and cooperation, allowing for remarkable feats. But those same stories have so often been used to oppress and dehumanize those who are different. Science allows us to communicate across the seas and fly above the clouds, to cure disease and understand the cosmos, but those same discoveries can be turned into ever more efficient killing machines. The wars of the modern age teach us this truth. Hiroshima teaches this truth. Technological progress without an equivalent progress in human institutions can doom us. The scientific revolution that led to the splitting of an atom requires a moral revolution as well. Stories??? Moral revolution? So we need to change our morals as science advances? This guy is an absolute idiot. Posted by: Lizzy at May 27, 2016 08:33 AM (NOIQH) 106

Hi jwest, I was just looking at that and wondering if it was the issue. Thanks!
Seems weird that the valve is so far away from the dispenser. Posted by: @votermom at May 27, 2016 08:22 AM (7lVbc) When solenoid valves fail, they do it one of three ways. 1) They don't open at all. (usually power is not getting to them) 2) They get a small bit of something stuck in them preventing them from shutting fully. (this would make them leak slowly) 3) They break the return spring or something else and get stuck fully open. Rarely, the micro switch at the outlet (in the door) has an arc and fuses closed, thus providing power to the solenoid valve all the time. You can check this by pulling the connector off of the terminals on the valve assembly. If the water stops flowing, you need to check the switch for continuity. Or something like that. Good morning all.
The breakout at Anzio is accelerating EZ Dog Journal from this date in 1944- May 27, 1944 The axis of attack was changed with the main effort now going towards Lanuvio and up the railway towards Albano. 1 AD was pulled from the Artena sector and put in with the 45th Div. Our lines now read from left to right - 5 Div (Br), 1 Div (Br) (both belonging to the 5th army), 1 AD and 45th Div, 34th Div, 3d Div and SSF. All fronts are progressing fairly well though resistance is tougher. 3d Div took Artena. II Corps is moving up to take over the sector on our right. I took a jeep ride up through Cori to see the havoc. At least 12 Tiger tanks (and they are really big) are knocked out along the road. Trucks, SP's, motor-cycles and command cars are smashed up all through the area. Guns are blown up from 150's to AT guns. Gerry hurt awfully bad on that retreat. Even a few of those "good" Krauts are laying around yet, too. General Mark Clark couldn't resist the allure and fame associated with liberating Rome, so instead of encircling the Germans still along the Gustav Line, he ordered the Allied forces to take a hard left turn and head for lightly occupied Rome, leaving several German Divisions an opportunity to withdraw to northern Italy and remain in the war. Throughout the day, when you feel the dark dog of depression, breathe and say "God give me strength" or something like that. You don't have to believe in God to ask him for help. I will never understand this. It's the same thing with Californians. They flee their oppressive shithole state to a freer, better state, then work tirelessly to turn their new home into the same oppressive shithole they just fled. Then it's time to "flea" dip them. Tell them to straighten up and stop the lefty bullshit, or they can go right back to the hellhole they came from. Posted by: rickb223 at May 27, 2016 08:53 AM (EdhH3) 154

But, you know, it has to be, one drink - not a glass full of bourbon or whatever. and, it's my belief, that it should be with or just before dinner. So, one glass of wine, one beer, or one cocktail. Seamus Muldoon, I found a bunch of old phot slides at the family's Cape cottage a couple years ago, scanned them into digital imagaes. Anyway, one set, about 2 dozen photos, is a series of pics of (I believe) one of my great uncles during WW2. Still trying to get the info. on his unit, etc., but in one pic he's standing next to a big sign saying "You are now Entering Austria Courtesy of VI Army Corps- Salerno, Volturno, Anzio, Rome, S. France, Alsace, Rhine, Danube, Germany". Another pic is of two guys standing next to a large stone marker inscribed "Brennero", which I assume marks the Brenner Pass.
Other pics are of guys goofing off, blown bridges, destroyed city blocks, and creepily, one highway sign indicating "21 km to Dachau". Posted by: Lincolntf at May 27, 2016 09:04 AM (2cS/G) 181

Save a few of the VA facilities (San Antonio, other specialized treatment hospitals), but ditch the rest. Give our vets the same health plan that Congress gets (they deserve absolutely no less) and let them use local hospitals/doctors. No more red tape. My daughter uses garlic, and I can always tell when i walk in the door - even a day after. ===== For some reason, a lot of people in my family can't metabolize garlic and if they have some they smell like stale beer and sweatsocks the next day. The photos of emaciated, hollow-eyed survivors and piles of emaciated corpses were haunting.

Then a friends father, a survivor of Birkenau (I vaguely recall), got up and answered the very shocked questions of the boys. I'll never forget, to use a phrase. Yes, I went to a boys school and we had morning chapel. In a secular school. We played football, had shop class and more than a few went into the military. So sue me. I visited Birkenau i 1991. It looks much different today. Then, the place was falling apart. When I got there, a student tour was leaving. There were workers mowing the grass between the train tracks and there was an overwhelming odor of fresh hay. It was very dark with rain clouds. I wondered around where crema 2 & 3 once stood. When it started raining I ran into the nearest hut for cover. So, I'm waiting it out in this dark hut and started looking around. There was one recessed area where they had decorative tiles. The tiles depicted happy concentration camp prisoners working with some nonsense label about how happy they were working. Can you imagine that shite? I had seen something similar at Dachau. Man, the nazis sure had a sick sense of humor. The work the inhabitants of the hut I was in was getting the people in and out of the gas chambers and then burning the bodies.

264 I visited Birkenau i 1991.
Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at May 27, 2016 09:29 AM (iQIUe) We have been to Dachau (200 and Treblinka (2009). Dachau was well-preserved, and the documentation of what took place still available. Treblinka was completely destroyed, almost down to the foundations-you had to ask locals how to find it. The reason? Western allies were first in Dachau, and after finding out what was happening there, made sure the Germans didn't destroy anything. In Treblinka, the Soviets were there, gave the Germans time to destroy any papers describing the purpose of the camp, as well as to get rid of any inmates and personnel. I presume the Soviets did that because A) similar opinion of Jews B) interest in mass annihilation of enemies. I can't support that theory, no evidence, but after reading of the pre-War rapprochement of German and the Soviet Union, and of the Soviet's delay in helping Poles towards the end of the war, those are my best guesses. Trump had a great speech to the Williston Basin Energy Conference yesterday. He hit a lot of themes that Cruz and Paul hit. Cutting regulations, cutting taxes, US energy independence, reaching out to the inner city not by offering more free shit, but security, opportunity and prosperity.
If he does even a quarter of what he promised, he will be a great President. Even if he does nothing, he will still be better than Clinton. Posted by: rd at May 27, 2016 09:52 AM (v0YLX) 317

I've long felt that the Soviet backstabbing of the Poles had a lot to do with the humiliation of the Red Army's first serious defeat. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at May 27, 2016 10:10 AM (jcihK) 376

>>Which brings us back to "uh Eddie Munster did you fucking notice King Putt is importing them now and has been for a year?"
Well no, it doesn't bring us anywhere other than acknowledging that Ryan was responding to a question about whether or not we should have a religious test for immigrants which last I looked is illegal. As to stopping Obama I'm not sure what Congress can do. The President and his administration are given a lot of latitude under the Refugee Act of 1980. For instance, the act says that the US can take in up to 50,000 refugees annually unless the President asks for more. What would you suggest they do? Our biggest problem is that previous generations did not expect us to elect a totally lawless President and administration. The normal checks and balances that we expect of good public servants are a joke to this administration. It was Republicans that forced Nixon out. Democrats do not play by the same rules. SECURITY TEST b/c it is not like a terrorist organization can rubber
duck in whatever documents they want or legend they need for their agents.... You can make the same argument about a RELIGIOUS TEST. The wannabe jihadists could just claim they were Christian in order to sneak in. So I don't see how suggesting a "SECURITY TEST" is any more sinister than suggesting a "RELIGIOUS TEST". ============ I'm pretty sure that after the revolt in 1943, the germans started tearing down Treblinka. They had liquidated the largest ghetto, Warsaw, and Birkenau had just opened. There was a lot of grave digging by locals for valuables the nazis had missed. In fact, it still goes on today outside the main camp the caretakers find evidence of digging. The soviets did do an investigation and there are photos. Remains of corpses and bones were still scattered over the camp due to the grave robbing. You can find photos on the internet. I don't think he's a genius. I just think his idea of a security test is better than a religious test for deciding who should come in or not.

We disagree on whether or not Eddie Munster should let the good be the enemy of perfect... we do not disagree on the GOP's idiocy versus Donk ruthlessness.... Eddie Munster should have said "I will work with the President in the future given the lawless nature of the current administration" and left it at that.... pssst he can shut down the government Jack but it makes weak kneed Republicans cry. 1. Paul Ryan is the most powerful member of congress. Where the hell is this famous security test?
I don't know. I don't know if he has actually proposed one. In abstract terms, however, I think vetting refugees based on potential security risks is a better idea than vetting refugees based on a religious test that can be easily subverted, much more easily than a well-established vetting procedure. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at May 27, 2016 10:10 AM (jcihK) Nailed it. Stalin was one of the officers who coordinated the attack on the Vistula, that was held off by Pilsduski, and eventually pushed back by Sikorski's 5th army. Stalin was disgraced, and wanted to get back at the "filthy Poles" who embarrassed him. Makes you wonder how much war has taken place over a single person's hurt feelings. I guess that would include Trump who has said repeatedly it's too late to do anything about Obama other than wait him out. Although I suppose we could ask him if he thought that would be a good idea right before his election with Hillary. Are you from a Jihadist nation?
That is not a religious test, that is a test based on citizenship. And as a first attempt at vetting potential refugees, I think that is quite reasonable. That isn't a religious test, which I'm pretty sure is what Paul Ryan was responding to in that clip. Posted by: chemjeff at May 27, 2016 10:20 AM (uAvJJ) 397

Belzec was another camp that served its purpose and the nazis began closing but not before they dug up all the bodies and burned them.
In the 90, they had a problem with remains being exposed and migrating outside the camp. The camp was on in incline and very close to the village. So, they tried to relocate them, put in paths so people would not be walking on the graves. Big project. Well, it didnt work. The remains kept moving. So, they did this thing where they piled huge rocks on the site and then some sort of poly something to keep the remains from migrating. Looks strange but they had to do it. 383-interesting, because the Poles in the area we talked to said it was at the end of the war that Treblinka was torn down. The Russians were in the area in early 1944-they stayed in the Western part of Poland, not helping the Poles fend off German advances.
But they could well have remembered it incorrectly. Posted by: Moki at May 27, 2016 10:23 AM (ezHMO) 401
You can do security reviews of Iradi and Syrian refugees. It will be god damned hard though. Many won't have any papers, and some of the papers will be forgeries.
Want to find out if they are Christians? Question them. Theology and doctrine. Which church did you attend? Where was it? What did it look like outside, inside, etc. Who was the priest? Name a dozen fellow parishioners. Any here in the camp? Any in other camps, cities or villages? Where was your house? Describe it inside and out. Where did your fellow parishioners live? Describe their houses, etc.? Where did you shop, go to school, etc. The entire family better have the same story, or you know they are up to no good. And find about three to six people that can confirm all these stories after you ask them all the same questions. Show them photo arrays. Pick out the right people. Any discrepancies? Double the number of people asked, and keep asking the person and their entire family the same questions again and again. Show them photo arrays. Pick out your fellow parishioners, your neighbors, the mayor, your grocer. Posted by: rd at May 27, 2016 10:26 AM (v0YLX) 402
My guess is; easier than invoking a security test that as far as anyone knows right now, does not even exist. Posted by: Mr Macca Bean at May 27, 2016 10:20 AM (4ng05) How? Let's think through this for a moment. Instead of a religious test, one could, say, ban refugees from coming in who are in ISIS-controlled parts of the world. Such as this: http://tinyurl.com/zmjafkr And then if a wannabee terrorist from Syria claimed to be from somewhere else, we could demand proof in some way that the refugee really is from the country they say they are from. If they can't provide proof, then we don't let them in. That sounds straightforward enough. Yes yes there could be forged documents and the like, but as a first attempt, it places the burden of proof on the refugee to prove that they meet the standards that we have placed. On the other hand, if the government "bans Muslims", and then a wannabe terrorist from Syria claims to be Christian instead, the burden of proof effectively is placed on the government to prove that they are not a Muslim, because there is no way for an individual to prove that one is a member of a particular religion or not. Posted by: chemjeff at May 27, 2016 10:27 AM (uAvJJ) 403
Posted by: rd at May 27, 2016 10:26 AM (v0YLX) If you are going to go to great lengths to interrogate each potential refugee - which I agree, is a wise idea - then instead of interrogating them about their faith, why not interrogate them about, you know, their actual connections to terrorist activity? Which is the *real reason* why we are so concerned about letting them in, after all. So we could do all that you suggest - demand that they provide character references for proving that they are who they say they are - but in terms of their potential terrorist connections, not in terms of their faith.
