My BFF, rock-solid conservative, practicing Catholic, 'Nam USMC vet, pretty smart lawyer, has been very "never Trump" for months now. I can barely even discuss it with him, he was so mental about it for so long. A month or two ago he was vowing to vote for Hillary if it came down her her and Trump.
Yesterday he cast his mail-in vote for Kasich. However, he indicated that I should give him time to come around and I am confident that he will eventually do so.

There's nothing in the State Department IG report that we didn't already know, but it ends with an official finding that Hillary broke State Department rules, and it punctures Hillary's balloon defenses that her use of the home brew server was somehow permitted and that she and her people fully co-operated with investigators. Even Andrea Mitchell and the Washington Post now say that she did wrong.
What the IG report doesn't say is that the way that Hillary broke State Department rules means that she also must have violated a lot of criminal laws. Any day now Hillary will have her cup of coffee with Comey, which is one of the last steps before the FBI completes its investigation. Cheryl Mills will be deposed in the Judicial Watch FOIA case tomorrow, with other Hillary minions to follow. So the noose tightens.
With the IG report now public, and with developments possible in the FOIA litigation like Hillary minions pleading the Fifth, how can Comey and the FBI not make a criminal referral? If they do, it'll likely leak.
If recent polling trends continue, Hillary will lose the CA primary to Bernie. If so, the Ds will have to find a way to replace Hillary, else they'll get killed in November. This is even before the DOJ acts on an indictment.
I've still got my eye on Clinton Cash charges. There was a recent leak about how the Foundation got a $100 million from a Blood Minerals firm that wanted new rules slow walked by State so that they'd have a freer hand in Africa. Notably, this gift was funneled through the Foundation's Canadian affiliate so that the donor's name wasn't publicly disclosed. There are 1,000 donor names so hidden. Follow the money! All you'd need to complete your charges are stray e-mails that connect the dots. The kind that you might find among the 50,000 e-mails that Hillary said she'd wiped clean and that the FBI has had for months.

A fun fact today, my 20 year old sister-in-law, who is extraordinarily liberal, and has had some minor issues with two police jurisdictions because recreational pot is not available in NJ was over visiting with my wife while I was home for lunch.
I mentioned to my wife (more or less a democrat, but who will vote for Trump), that some uncommitted delegates had declared for Trump and he had locked up the nomination.
Sister-in-law asked who we were voting for. We said Trump, she has heard me discuss Trump and how he was going to win the nomination, to the "yeah right" chuckles of my democrat in-laws, since last August.
She thinks Trump is a pig, but said she is probably going to vote for him, since she thinks Bernie is probably crazy, and Hillary is awful.
Both my brothers, previous Kerry/Obama/Nader voters, are on the Trump train as well. I imagine I'm not the only one having these types of conversations with these types of relatives.

I do think a hard line on that issue does have the potential to show a huge Silent Majority if Trump doesn;t screw it up.
I don't like to read too much into anecdotes, but I have a VERY liberal Democrat friend, but he's outraged at open border policies and what they've done to his community.

Both my brothers are kind of weirdos politically, one is a devout Catholic, favors strong military, does not favor foreign adventurism, very much looking to change the free trade game, immigration could be part of it, but not a deal breaker considering he's voted for open borders types before. Very pro-union.
The other is religious agnostic, verysocial liberal, similar military views, (I also share their views), I don't think he cares too much about immigration, but seems to want to throw a political curveball, get a non-politician and see what happens.
Sister-in-law same thing, "a non-politician businessman might be a good change of pace" sort of thing.

Guys, the beard thing was pro hockey, back in the 80s, and just a "playoff beard" (you didn't shave as long as your team was still alive in the playoffs). So, at most, a couple week's scruff.

Eh, I have less problem with this. I see it as a human nature thing. Hillary is their enemy but does not compromise their sense of self as conservative/libertarian/whatever. If they advocated for Trump, even as being the lesser of two evils, I think they think it would be compromising their morals.
I see this as bad logic, because Trump is not a conservative standard bearer- therefore I do not have a problem with him wearing the Republican mantle (this is a damaged brand anyway.) Plus, a vote for Johnson, while maybe face saving, would do nothing but enable Hillary! Standing by and letting an evil happen is as bad as pulling the lever for her yourself. Trump may be a douchebag, but he is the lesser of two weevils in this case.
Just my two cents.

I post infrequently in bursts, but your post yesterday was so right, and pretty much mirrored what I've realized the last few months. I think regardless of anyone's feelings on Trump, and whatever happens in the election, we owe him a debt of gratitude for smoking these people out. It's scandalous that all the lip service to fighting the Clinton machine for almost 25 years, we will suddenly roll over for her because of some fever dream that Trump is Hitler.
These people are a lot louder than they are influential, and that is proven out by how fast the GOP electorate has gotten behind Trump. It's quite clear that these twitter all stars have no pull with anything but a slim minority that we can probably win without.
One note, and don't take this the wrong way, I think you had mentioned once or twice during this cycle (and I probably think you mentioned it before) that you were glad you didn't have to carry water for these frauds anymore. Rush said the same thing after GOP congress was annihilated in 2006. I know you as the proprietor of such a smart military blog are under a lot of pressure to tow the line for a lot of these miscreants, and I hope you never feel like you have to. Maybe I misinterpreted, but Ace when from trump curious to #nevertrump only recently, and at the time it didn't seem like something that was a complete commitment like some of these other folks that can't dare walk it back. The reality is now it's a two horse race (barring catastrophe), and one of them will win.
Gary Johnson is not going to win, Jill Stein is not going to win, Mitt Romney is not going to run or win, and mathematically it's not even possible anymore.
So it's Trump or HRC.
You can be #nevertrump, but if you are, you need to just step aside and not vote, fanciful 3rd party sabotage elects Clinton.

Yeah I just don't get that. I do understand the fear that Hillary will crank up the camps and activate the troops in the USA. There is literally nothing she would do, no matter how evil or outrageous that would surprise me. Zero.
But Trump? Being an egotistical blowhard does not somehow translate into Nazi. Not at any level. Hitler made it very, painfully clear what he believed in before he got into power. Trump's book is nothing like that.

Trump may be slightly better then Hil. He is LIKELY to be just about as terrible. There is a CHANCE he could be catastrophic in a way we have not seen before.
That is the gamble.
In addition, Trump will define the GOP for a long time if he becomes president. Constitutional Conservatives will be even more marginalized then they are now.

Employee's wife comes bursting in at lunch today. Tells me she's divorcing employee. Leaves in about three minutes.
Last week she had open heart surgery. I don't know what painkillers she's on but she seems strung out to me.
Employee is a low education, low skill guy. Sad that he's in a rough spot and I hope they can get through this.
Here's my question: can I safely just put this behind me and not mention it to HR? What would our exposure be, if any, to what happens in divorce proceedings just because she came in here and told me what she was intending to do?
I've seen her once before in my life. It's not like we have a connection. My only comment to her was that I was very sad to hear that news, and that I thought she should probably be recovering from surgery and encouraged her to go home and get the rest she needs.
It may be that she really needs a psych eval. She wasn't really making sense.

I see this as bad logic, because Trump is not a conservative standard bearer- therefore I do not have a problem with him wearing the Republican mantle (this is a damaged brand anyway.) Plus, a vote for Johnson, while maybe face saving, would do nothing but enable Hillary! Standing by and letting an evil happen is as bad as pulling the lever for her yourself. And of course all the Sick Burns on Comments and on Twitter.
Most people are not thinkers and never will be. They are just sad and frightened little children who have learned how to ape what the other children are saying to not be put into the middle of the bully circle.
And in fact politics is a field which especially encourages such non-thinkers posing as thinkers, because the whole POINT of politics is group accomodation/group appeasement.

No, he was pretty adamant as in he said that he would consider voting for Hillary before voting for Trump (not that I ever really thought he was going to vote for Hillary but he made his disdain for Trump pretty damn clear).
That's fine. People change their minds all the time but it was a big turn without a lot of warning as far as I could tell.
Some of us haven't made that turn and I don't think sitting here in May that makes us odd. As I've said all along, if Trump wants my vote he has to earn it and not just rely on my hatred of Hillary.

My usual default is to never go to HR except in a last resort. I do not know your HR dept, but they are usually a blunt hammer in search of as many nails as possible (both good and bad) when they get roused.
Mostly this is a wait and see type of thing. If she keeps doing it and being disruptive, then that is a different story. Maybe talk to the guy and see if you can give him some support. I dunno.

These two things are not the same, and saying "well if you don't vote for Trump, you're voting for Hillary" is straight up logically incoherent.
I've never seen anyone in the comments here saying, "Trump is so bad, I'm voting for Hillary here." Everyone who is anti-Trump is saying "I personally don't believe Trump is significantly different from Hillary. I won't vote for either."
I disagree with that sentiment, but I understand where they're coming from. That's basically how I felt about people like Jeb. If Jeb ended up with the nomination, I don't know that I'd have voted for him either.

He was actually getting a bit weird beforehand but the surgery was the topper. I know it sounds wrong but heart problems can do that.

I came to that realization in 2008 cycle, I had sort of mindlessly towed the party line, I did the pro-iraq war counter protests, i read all the blogs, then I saw that while Ron Paul was a terrible candidate, he had some important things to say, that if we were really conservatives might be worth a listen. (sadly for me, he was so bad a candidate he couldn't even barely sputter those things out on the debate stage without going off on a tangent).
But I expressed my support for such things, and started getting banned like I was was posting pro-bush memes on democraticunderground in 2003. In the end I voted for McCain, and Romney, in the general election but I wanted some of these other fiscal issues discussed in the primary.
Been really disappointed to read some people this time around, some great blogs that I have read for over a decade, and they are just foaming at the mouth. The entire editorial staff at Redstate should be banned from their own blog by their own rules.

Yeah same here. I could vote six thousand times in Oregon and it wouldn't make any difference. They found a whole box of filled out ballots in a dumpster the last primary election a few weeks ago. Its all mail-in here, I have zero confidence my vote does anything at all. Even if it did, the Portland-Eugene combination outweighs the rest of the state, and is hard, hard left.

The thing is, glitz and showbiz in politics is scary, and it should be particularly scary to Conservatives. It often leads to bad places. I'm kinda partial to boring politicians.

Here's my thinking as a random person on the internet who won't vote Trump.
Hil will be terrible. For sure.
Trump may be slightly better then Hil. He is LIKELY to be just about as terrible. There is a CHANCE he could be catastrophic in a way we have not seen before.
That is the gamble.
In addition, Trump will define the GOP for a long time if he becomes president. Constitutional Conservatives will be even more marginalized then they are now.
And I can accept that thinking. However, my support for Trump comes from the hope that he can drive a stake through Scankles' political heart and eliminate her as any sort of political force for the rest of her worthless, treasonous life. If he can do just that, he deserves the thanks of a grateful nation.

No public figure ever "earns" my vote. My puny (well literally meaningless, in my state) little vote is based on my analysis of the situation. It's a hiring decision, no more no less.
Two of the more thoughtful morons (great phrase, eh?) here have used this "earn my vote" formula here today. I of course understand it, it's just not the way I approach any election.
Of course rarely has the "hiring decision" been less joyful (though, to be fair, YouKnowWho does at least bring some humor - intentional and otherwise - to the sad stupid unrecognizable mess that is now America's public square).
And - but of course it is - the most basic implication of someone like YouKnowWho getting the nomination from among "the deepest GOP bench in forever" is furiously ignored (talking about ace's mediocre "intellectual" adversaries, not morons here).
As I said from the first good Trump poll way back when, it's not about him, it's about the failure of the GOP political class. Yet the clueless apologias continue - perhaps with less fervor.
My own dark hunch (hunch) is that, in fact, it's the country that's the problem, not the GOP. The populace, at least a working majority, shows little awareness of the degradation of our institutions, and little concern. The mere existence of Hillary as a candidate, given her "record", is persuasive evidence of my dark dianosis.

I started out Trump curious as you did. Then the more I saw of him, the more I didn't like what I saw, same as you did. In fact when you are saying you would rather vote for Hillary, I was still planning to vote for Trump despite my intense dislike of him.
He has consistently pushed me away so I don't understand why my decision not to vote for someone who has continuously alienated me is so bad. Should he not even make an attempt to woo people with legitimate misgivings?

I've heard from people with first hand experience that it is not unusual for people to become very selfish and self centered after hear surgery.
I pray I have no first or second hand experience of this and I pray that no one here has it.
Only you know your company. I had a women leave me a note telling me she didn't like me flirting with her and to stop it.
I told my boss and also said I would make sure I only talked to her when another person was present. She later left the company but I don't think it had anything to do with the note.
If she divorces the guy and he is hung up on her then he will probably self destruct and leave the company. Sorry. Happens.

I think it has to start with people on our side doing what Bernie did. Bernie isn't a Democrat, he's an independent (socialist) who caucuses with the democrats. Would it be possible for some of us to do that? What if the Freedom Caucus all decided to change their party to Independent, and call themselves Constitutionalist, and just caucus with the Republicans? Maybe we could get a Constitutionalist Governor somewhere (Perry? Walker?). At some point, you've got a legitimate, actionable 3rd party right?

I did say that -- when there were still alternatives besides Hillary Clinton and I wanted ot register how seriously I opposed Orange Julius Caesar.
However, the only alternative now to Trump is Hillary.
People seem serious about voting for her -- to the extent that to even say "I'll work to defeat Hillary" is considered *CONTROVERSIAL.*

I think Trump is going to be president. More and more people think this. I believe God protects me. I don't fear Trump being President.
Lots of people can not stand being on the losing side. I'm not one of them but several people I am close to are. Once a "can't stand to lose" person decides Trump is going to win they are not going to like you talking down Trump.
I have had a person who depends on me for their livelihood get in my face and threaten me over a similar item. Shocked me. I've never ever seen that used as a plot device in a book. Didn't realized it existed till I was hit by it.

Well, thanks for clarifying that now. But I just reread it and it still came across as criticizing those of us who are not willing to vote for Trump even though we despise Hillary and everything she stands for.
At the risk of sounding melodramatic, my decision to no longer vote for Trump was somewhat agonizing. I had been growing more and more disturbed with his candidacy and I mean genuinely disturbed. I think he has been an incredibly toxic demagogue, and I'm not okay with that.

True, it's politically unpopular just now, but if done right it's the best way to bring peace to the world.
Lot's of people jumped on the bandwagon when Iraqis were waving purple fingers around. What fell apart was the displacing a strong crazy leader with a strong sane leader.
The US should colonize the losers on a 100 year timetable. Exercise total control. All children are taught only English. Religion and State separation more strict than here.
Ease the defeated populous into the governing business gradually over 50 to 75 years. Let them govern themselves (to a high extent) for the last 25 years. If everything is going well, give them "independence" until the first fuck up, then come back down on them hard.
We had the right idea, just too many pussies in office to pull it off the way it should have been done.

my personal answer:
They are both liars. They both have policies that I think would be disastrous for the country, but i'm not sure if they can implement them.
For example, if I knew that Trump couldn't unilaterally start a trade war with China, I'd be more willing to temper my worries about that. Its amazing how its not possible to really know if he could do that or not. That's how much power has been given to the president.
SCOTUS picks are huge - so that would be an area where I'd fear Hillary just as much if not more.
To vote against Trump and for Hillary, I think I'd need to fear more than his style.
Like, fear his personality being truly unstable, that could lead to say nuclear war. (PJ O'Rourke's concern.)
Trump has not exactly settled my nerves on that issue, but I assume he's just into conspiracy stuff, but not a full on whacko believer.
But if Trump were to show signs of being coookooooo, then yeah, I might take Hillary.
But literally, it has to be nuclear war!

I bought into it (having previously been against nation building). The idea is now discredited anew. And yet the foreign policy "intellectuals" of the party just won't give up on it, despite the fact that it is simultaneously 1, politically unpopular and 2, entirely discredited by facts.

Having been in Iraq in the run-up to their second set of elections, I still contend that there was some reason for hope. It would have taken awhile, but I think they might have gotten to stable nationhood.
But then we had the SOF cluster and the pullout.
It was like the Seahawks losing to the Patriots in Super Bowl 48, except, instead throwing an interception on the goal line just walking over and giving the Patriots the ball.

We sort of settled the hash of Germany and Japan after WWII, and sort of imposed a constitutional government on them.
We made some progress in Iraq, and then Barack Obama and friends have done quite a bit to undermine this, just to prove that in the long run they were right. A lot of that going on in politics, these days.
It harkens back to those giddy days in Viet Nam, when..."We had to destroy the village to save it."
I'm not Neocon, or played one on TV, or stayed at a Holiday Inn Express or are even Jewish (and Neocon is frequently used as a slur against Jews, but not here at AoS). But I did want Iraq to succeed, because Bush was right (and subsequent years have proven it), that if popular government took root, it would push out the jihadis. And since Barack poisoned the well, the jihadis (financed by our Sunni Arab friends in the Gulf, who are no friends of popular government anywhere) are back and the killin' is going on in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and elsewhere.
It was a long game, and a risk, but the alternatives are starting to prove pretty ghastly. And frankly the biggest risk was on the homefront, and sure enough, the Democrats killed the baby in the crib.
Afghanistan was always going to be basket case, because it has been a poor, cruel, tribal society for a very long time, and prospects are slim for it ever being anything else.
But Iraq could have been something. If you ever read "Republic of Fear", it is illuminating about what Iraq was like under Saddam, and how it was never going to become something better unless he was removed, and his whole supporting ruling clique, the al-Tikriti clan.

Obviously a huge discussion unsuited to this format, but let's assume we're talking Iraq. Just as Germany was invaded and Japan would have been to destroy the regimes there - not to reform them or build peaceful civil societies - Iraq was invaded to remove the regime.
Which was, wisely and properly, deemed an intolerable, unmanageable, and uncontainable menace in the post-9/11 world (most reckless and dangerous regime since the 30s, with vast resources, proven ability to apply them to produce weaponry, and extensive ties to terror outfits, incl. typical and preliminary ones with AQ). "Iraqi Freedom" wasn't suddenly an urgent cause post-9/11. Iraqi menace was. Judgement call, but "skeptics" have no serious answers when asked for alternatives - except to incorrectly dismiss the factual framework actually facing decision-makers at the time.
"Peaceful civil society" was perhaps an aspiration of some, and obviously woulda been a good result, but regime change was the objective. "Exploiting your victory" is a more cold-blooded and less inspirational, but much more relevant, strategy.
In any case all of it academic as the US ended occupation far too quickly, and then of course under Obama simply walked away. Squandering the benefits of taking out the previously-feared badass regime of the eastern Arab world and placing ourselves in a strategic position literally undreamt of by generations of people grappling with the MidEast mess.
Try re-running Europe after WWII, except don't intervene in the Greek civil war, or Italian or French politics - heck even forget the Berlin crises - and see how the simulation goes. The iconic geostrategic successes of the 20th century were, at the time, messy and gradual and close-run things that stretched over time. Iraq is precisely that exercise, except done in real life.
But it is clear that America as a whole no longer is a serious country able to undertake serious missions in its own interest, so it's troubling to hear Trump and many others talking about "rebuilding" the military. The military needed for the passive, dangerous, and more costly sort of policies Americans will support is a small fraction of what we have (or had 10 years ago).
Punitive raids and leadership strikes - beloved of the keyboard strategists here and elsewhere - are generally ineffective outside of puny nuisance adversaries, but we sure as hell don't need 12 carrier groups if that's what we're down to.

Basically, as far as the world population goes, Western civ/thinking is on the tails of the distribution. American society is on the tail of that tail. We are the elite of the elite.
They've found that what they used to think were hard wired traits in human behavior and thinking are very much not, they are cultural, and doing socio/pyscho experiments on Westerners and Americans in particular are like thinking penguins are representative of all birds.
We Americans are penguins, and the majority of the non-western population are the other birds.
What we hold dear, how we think, is an exception to the rule of humanity.
With that in mind, the idea we're going to impose our system of law and society on these primitive shit holes is just ridiculous. It ain't gonna work.

It's not discredited at all. Obama is in Japan today, a peaceful civil society brought about through sustained military AND political action.
People can gloss over it all they want but the fact is that when Bush left office Iraq was relatively calm and putting in place the building blocks for a peaceful civil society. It was Obama and the left who blew it all up to keep a campaign pledge.
And we have ample proof of what happens when we go in and break shit and leave. Libya is a prime example.
We will have more military actions in the future. So to put this in terms related to this election, we can either pull a Hillary and leave a broken country and accept the known disaster it will bring about or we can do a Trump and try to assist in the rebuilding of a new and peaceful nation. One is absolutely guaranteed to fail, the other has a chance of working.

It also made Bush weak domestically, which is why he became a Big Spender.
