Vic, did you ever read Catherine Christian's 1979 The Pendragon? It's set in the historical Arthurian period and told through the viewpoint of Sir Bedevere (or Bedwyr, in Christian's Celtic milieu), who grows up with Kay and Morganas Arthur's foster brother and sister. I haven't read it in years - I used to be quite into Arthurian legend, but lost the taste - but I enjoyed it very much.
