WaPo is still a liberal rag eat up with idiots who support violating the Constitution in their efforts to make sure the US is a Communist third world shit hole. How about this lead in a story about an OR group who think today's government is an illegal oligarchy (which it is).
B.J. Soper took aim with his AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and fired a dozen shots at a human silhouette target. Soper's wife and their 16-year-old daughter practiced drawing pistols. Then Soper helped his 4-year-old daughter, in pink sneakers and a ponytail, work on her marksmanship with a .22-caliber rifle. We are supposed to find this "shooting" ominous. How would they feel if we finally got up the votes in congress to make the first amendment for the press regulated the same way they regulate guns??? http://wapo.st/1NEmzqk Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 22, 2016 05:59 AM (vvmPQ) 7
Cutting back on salt in your diet can cause heart attacks says new study. The former study saying high salt intake (and the US's own guidelines on salt have long been discredited). I don't believe ANY study anymore. My own theory on heart attacks after a lot of study is that the largest contributor to heart disease is heredity. IOW you can't do a damn thing about it but try to eat right in moderation and get some exercise.

So no, don't have the old one. Do have the "new one". You can add or subtract ingredients on the list which is great, but you need to also back up that individual file. And that may have actually been the file that had become corrupted and was giving me all the error messages. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 22, 2016 06:58 AM (vvmPQ) 47

Posted by: Jeff Weimer at May 22, 2016 07:06 AM (OR5cC) The Navy's best guess is an accidental launch of a torpedo which then "hunted for the only target in the water" which was the Scorpion. But other experts who listed to the sound tapes made by the then classified Atlantic sound monitors say that is not supported by the recorded sounds. BTW, the treasonous Walker family sold out those listening posts to the Soviets later. They should all have been shot. Those torpedoes were designed to safe themselves if they turn near 180 degrees exactly for that reason. That's why when there's a "hot run" (torpedo activating by itself in the tube - fairly common occurence), the procedure is to turn the boat on a reciprocal course and eject the torp. BMB thinks that the battery shorted rather than activated, and when a "hot torpedo" was reported the bridge thought "hot run", and that's why they suspect the boat was headed in exactly the wrong direction when she went down. The battery exploded and the warhead "burned" (low-order detonation) instead of properly exploding. When they found her, it appeared that the explosion was from the inside, but the hull wasn't blown apart enough like you would see from a proper warhead explosion. Vic, XP stopped being the primary version of Windows a decade ago. Developers aren't going to ignore the features of newer OS releases forever and eventually this means their stuff will stop being backward compatible. At some point they have to move forward or lose their market to competitors. If you're doing a major new version of a program for 2016, people still running XP aren't likely to be shopping for new software.
That's just the harsh reality of it. It isn't like being able to pull up to a gas station with a 40 year old car and use the same gas as the newest ICE cars. You'll find a few notable items out there that have maintained backward compatibility for an amazingly long time. IMGburn and Atlantis Word Processor are two I use that will run on remarkably old systems. It requires a level of commitment that most small developers won't muster or cannot afford due to the testing costs. In both cases it mattered that the developers paid close attention too Microsoft's guidelines for how stuff should be done. Back when XP came out Microsoft published a book saying do this and don't do this if you want your stuff to last. Accessing an API in an unintended way might be convenient at the time but there is no assurance that future versions of the code will work that way. This is why a lot of stuff broke under Vista and later. Developers ignored the guidelines and did things that lead to a lot of security holes and other weaknesses. It was long common for systems like Unix to rigidly enforce the rules about such things but it was long the Microsoft attitude to let third party developers do whatever they felt like so long as it helped sell the platform. But it finally sank in that a lot of stuff going wrong was the fault of bad third party software and Microsoft was being blamed for it. So the party ended with XP and Vista treated what were formerly guidelines as laws to be enforced. This and other changes (dropping 16-bit code support) changes meant a fair amount of older software and some really bad current software (looking at you, Intuit) stopped working but it was a big improvement going forward. These days, if I have a crash that brings down the whole system, it's a really major event and more likely a hardware failure. Back in the 90s it was just regarded as time for a break while the system rebooted. In fact, my Android tablets crash more often than my PCs. Posted by: Epobirs at May 22, 2016 07:35 AM (IdCqF) 72

If you're flying to Houston then chances are you'll need to get past the TSA.
A wise man (chuckle) once said in reference to the TSA: "You can't professionalize unless you federalize" So be sure to wear clean underwear and don't pack anything in your bags that won't be worth more than $5 at the local pawn shop. Oh and be sure to get to the airport 16 hours before your flight, to make sure the TSA has enough time to process you. Posted by: weew at May 22, 2016 07:48 AM (O1uuu) 81

A buddy and I hitch hiked to Corpus on a three-day weekend. An older couple picked us up and in the course of conversation going overseas came up. That couple drove us around showing the sights of Corpus and then took us out to dinner. Very kind folks.

Then perhaps it is time to look at a competing product. Without knowing the name of what you're using I cannot say anything about their resource requirements but it wouldn't take much by today's standards to greatly exceed what was common when XP was still shipping on new PCs at retail. Unless you're talking about Windows itself, in which case the complaint is simply not true. The specs required for Vista to run well remain in effect today for Windows 10 and they actually reduced the minimum memory and storage footprint since Vista. The emergence of the mobile market motivated that after many years of the market providing little incentive. The Core 2 Duo machine I first built for running Vista back in early 2007 ran Windows 10 fairly well before I retired it. The only major change from when it was first assembled was going from 2 GB of RAM to 6 GB. I wouldn't bother building a desktop with less than 8 GB today because it's so cheap. I had too many newer machines around to justify the space it was taking up in storage, so it went to Goodwill after I pulled the hard drives. If you're playing high end games or content creation software, the sky is the limit on the hardware to get the best results but the modest demands of most other software is one of the reasons the PC industry is in bad shape. A well equipped machine from 2011 or thereabouts is still perfectly good for most stuff in terms of running software. The marketing people have done a lousy job of getting through to the non-enthusiast market (most of the world) how much nicer the new machines can be because of cumulative advances in secondary areas. One of the best advances in over a decade has been the appearance of SSD (solid state drive) in affordable form. If you go to Dell or HP's sites and look at mainstream consumer systems, you might not realize that SSDs existed. They aren't even offered as optional upgrades to supposedly customizable systems. My belief is that the marketing types chickened out when presented with trying to sell something that cost more and had lower capacity. But the performance is so, so worth it. Especially since so few people who have systems with TB or greater capacity hard drives are not using most of the space. Most people just don't do anything that creates that much data to store. Thus that do are more likely to have a higher end system or something custom made, especially the gamers and content creators. But the pleasure of SSD speed is something everyone can enjoy, if only they know it exists in the first place. It's one of the good reasons to get into a newer system but the industry treats it like a secret. Posted by: Epobirs at May 22, 2016 08:03 AM (IdCqF) 93

Harrumph. On my first computer I got by with a cassette deck for storage for nearly a year until I bought my first floppy drive. I sold a motorcycle for the money. Both of my brothers had been in fairly serious crashes, yet I considered them more skillful at riding than I'd ever likely be. So I decided in favor of the sort of crashes I could recover from by just hitting reset and not need to be carried to the hospital.
I wish now I'd been more focused on the technical side of things and acquired more skills that would have served me in a decent job. It may be I just don't have the brain for it. I'm still trying to figure out what gainful employment I am equipped cognitively to do. After reading that sidebar piece about the guy who cannot visualize anything I have to wonder. I cannot imagine how he functions, yet he was an engineer at Facebook and has sold books and TV scripts. Meanwhile, on bad days like Saturday every song I've heard in fragment in the last month becomes an ear worm. Posted by: Epobirs at May 22, 2016 08:12 AM (IdCqF) 101

Good Sunday Morning, friends and morons. For this morning's Praise and Worship, I'm offering to you "Bless the Lord O My Soul", also known as "10,000 Reasons". This is one of the songs we will play at our wedding later this summer. When I was selecting songs, I played this one and was surprised when my little six-year granddaughter started singing along. She knew all the words. You don't know what that did for my heart. I hope it blesses you too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YXCuUP5Zz0 The song was written by Matt Redman, but it is performed here by Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, Kristian Stanfill and others. I think I see Kari Jobe in there too. Bless the Lord oh my soul Oh my soul Worship His Holy name Sing like never before Oh my soul I'll worship Your Holy name Bless You Lord And on that day When my strength is failing The end draws near And my time has come Still my soul will Sing Your praise unending Ten thousand years And then forevermore Posted by: grammie winger at May 22, 2016 08:19 AM (dFi94) Posted by: ThunderB at May 22, 2016 08:19 AM (zOTsN) 110

Houston. means...
A. Food. Most competitive in the nation 1. Lupe's Tortillas (beef fajitas) 2. Niko Nikos or Fadis for Greek 3. Thai Village 4. Pappas Steakhouse, Pappadeaux etc 5. Star Pizza for deep dish fans. Grimaldi's for the rest 6. this list could go on forever B. NASA. Take the tour and you'll note how small some of the original craft were made. "You came here in THAT? You're braver than I thought." C. Note the "No Zoning" and how it made the city the Wuld West of construction. D. Sports. Well it's not football season yet. Catch an Astros game at night. But note that a short bike ride will take you past 3 very nice football stadiums. E. Note the 1920's era train in the downtown area. Since the city couldn't pay for a proper train which moves people from where they don't live to where they don't work. F. Someone in the comments sectioned mentioned some nightlife hangouts. Enjoy. Have you looked at RAM prices lately? I put 16 GB in the last machine I built for less than I spent to put 512 MB in an XP build back when XP was new. Even factoring for inflation the price per megabyte has gone way down. Check out the refurb sector. Walmart actually has a good selection that you can have delivered to your local store without shipping charge. It's been a useful means for some of my sometime employer's small business clients to get off XP and onto Windows 7. There are liability issues in some fields that can come up from running an OS that is no longer receiving support. Plus the old machines were just unpleasant for everybody due to sheer age. You can get a Core 2 Duo box with Win7 remarkably cheap, between $100 and $150. But for a bit more this would be far more enjoyable: http://tinyurl.com/hox9og9 For another $100 you can throw an SSD in there for a big upgrade. This also gives you the option of cloning the existing hard drive to the SSD, then doing the Windows 10 upgrade on the SSD. (Windows 10 has much better SSD support but there are utilities for stuff like TRIM on Win7) That way, if you decide you don't like it, you can clone the hard drive again to start fresh with Win7. (A local shop should be willing to it cheaply. A place like Best Buy will charge a lot more.) Yes, it will be a bit different and there will be some learning to do. But it's worth it in the long term. Posted by: Epobirs at May 22, 2016 08:33 AM (IdCqF) 125
The weather has been GORGEOUS (when it's not flooding) lately.

But the Saturn V rocket is there, to show you what Americans used to do with their brainpower and testosterone. Yes, it's an explosion, but one that was contained and directed, and used for good. Take I-45 South, to about Exit 24 (NASA Bypass), follow the curve, go past the Space Center Houston entrance to Saturn Lane, turn left and get into the right lane. Turn right into the Rocket Park parking lot and go see the Mercury and Gemini rockets, then go inside to see the pinnacle of human creativity and bravery, an Apollo rocket. Inside a building. Air conditioned. With exhibits. Free. Map: http://tinyurl.com/RocketParkYoustin You're welcome! Posted by: MathMom at May 22, 2016 08:33 AM (EE96d) 126

When we were looking for houses here we booked a restaurant reservation. We got a little bit Liston our way to the restaurant. We were 16 minutes late. Now, in NJ or NY if you are 15 minutes late they cancel the reservation
We were panicked. We tear in there and immediately act like assholes to the hostess, who was only trying to tell us the previous party was still dining and would we like a free cocktail We had to recalibrate our mindset. Speaking of cops and big cities, I'll repost this from laaaaate in the ONT: San Francisco police chief resigns because he "leaves behind a trail of dead bodies since he was appointed chief in 2011 He is not alone in the carnage," according to reporter/activist Dave Cook. "Next on the list needs to be Mayor Ed Lee.. who has been a lapdog for White Supremcy [sic] in SF." A pair of cops were questioning a Black woman in a neighborhood where a car theft had been reported. She took off in the car, crashed into a truck about 100 feet away, moved into reverse towards the cops, and they shot her dead. She was "unarmed" except for being behind the wheel of a car she wasn't afraid to use. SF has a cop shortage, which means they can't fire bad apples. Also, most cops can't afford to live in the city much less the neighborhood they patrol. What do you think causes these 2 problems? Friends of mine visited there recently and they said SF is population is nothing but millionaires and homeless people. Posted by: iforgot at May 22, 2016 09:09 AM (5o5ek) 171

Chinese is very good too, but you have to go out on Bellaire almost to Beltway 8. Best Chicken Fried Steak is Barbecue Inn on Crosstimbers, over the decades I have never had the bbq there but the chicken isn't bad. Remember Houston is underwhelming in barbecue by Texas standards. As to other things to do there, my usual thoughts are food related because the chief things to do are eat and make money. As mentioned the Science Museum is very good, especially the new Dinosaur hall, and the mineral collection which is flabbergasting, but like a lot of Houstonians I am a geologist. The Museum of Fine Arts is pretty good, the permanent collection has some genuine highlights, particularily Remington's "The Call for Help is amazing, and they have Corot's Orpheus leading Euridyce", there is a Memling and there is a fair amount of nice stuff. The Menil is free though and aside from really fantastic, is probably the most focused museum you will ever visit. It is all what a very strong willed French lady with exquisite taste who happened to be the daughter of the man who discovered you can use electrical conductivity to find things like oil and precious metals underground and then invented well logging would like. Vic, XP stopped being the primary version of Windows
a decade ago. Posted by: Epobirs at May 22, 2016 07:35 AM (IdCqF) Late to the party - but I have to ask: "Do you work in marketing or in PR at Microsoft?"Microsoft has been blaming the developers as corporate policy since at least Windows 3.0. Perhaps you aren't old enough to remember the "Unrecoverable Application Error" box that popped up every time that OS version crashed. Amazing how the same code that had UAE's under 3.0 quit having them under 3.1.One of the things that Microsoft got convicted of doing when it was judged to be an illegal monopoly was deliberately sabotaging competitor's code to make it appear to be poorly written - while the Microsoft alternative worked with fewer problems. Look, people, Houston ain't what it was. Luby's hasn't pegged level with the Cleburne since the cold hand of Pappas seized it and they took fried chicken livers with cream gravy and Jeff Davis pie off the menu. Brenner's isn't Brenner's anymore. Hebert's is gone with the Black Angus and the Confederate House, I had the last order of scallops ever served at Kaphan's, and Sonny Look's and the College Inn and Don Quixote are mere memories. Rice bought out the last Lewis & Coker around the corner from where my folks lived on Tallowood, and now Rice is gone the way of Jamail's and the real Antone's.
The Shamrock is no more, and nobody nowadays would dare to be The McCarthy - or his lawyer, Leon Jaworski. But our alleged elite have developed a cultural cringe Jesse Jones would have cussed them out over and for which Miss Ima would have slapped them. The place tries too damn hard to be liked by carpetbaggers, hipsters, statists, and other damnyankees. Nevertheless, it's the only place I ever missed when I lived in Rockbridge County; and the Shenandoah - and Rockbridge and Big Lex especially - are the only places I ever missed in Houston. And anybody who communicates by means relying on satellites or who travels, including to Houston, by any means involving the combustion engine, might just want to consider that without Houston ... they wouldn't. Hey, Houston is a great city. But hurry up because it's almost summer, and you really don't want to be there in the summer months.

Come to my restaurant. The food and drinks are awesome, it is downtown and your meal is on me since I have been reading Ace of Spades since I got linked to it from Allah is in the House.

While in Houston be sure to check out the Shamrock Hotel pool. Just walk in the side gate in your swim trunks and act like you own the place. It's the closest thing to Beverley Hills in Houston. Get seen at Remington's Bar right inside the loop off Westheimer. Dance to the Scott Gertner band playing Lionel Ritchie and Chuck Mangione covers. Slide on over to Harlow's on Hillcroft after hours for breakfast.
Oops, nevermind. It's all gone. Peak Houston would have to be 1980. Downtown was a panorama of cranes erecting shining new skyscrapers. Gilley's, Urban Cowboy, Earl Campbell, Bum and Luv Ya Blue. The Oilers, Astros and Rocket barely missed the gold ring that year. That was the best time to be a Houstonian.
