Dude

Oh squeeze me this is awesome.

Check out the exhibit at the British Museum, "Lost Worlds: Egypt's Sunken Cities."

Cool pictures here.

Apparently these two towns were lost to the River Nile not in a cataclysm but bit-by-bit as the river widened.

But they left the cool sh*t behind. Lazy f*x.

Also cool: this church in Czechia (the new name of the Czech Republic) decorated with the bones of 40-70,000 people who died in the Black Death.

More about the ossuary (bone chapel) at Wikipedia.

The ossuary is crumbling and as of 2014 they were trying to figure out how the hell you do a repair job on a chapel made of human bones.

7 I just wanted to throw a quick shout out to Patterico's Constitutional Vanguard project:

http://patterico.com/become-a-member-of-the-constitutional-vanguard/

It's in the very early stages, but if you're looking for an outlet to actual action that could potentially turn the country's politics back towards some sort of constitutional ideal, it's a group that I would recommend joining.

We're currently discussing potential courses of action, and we have about 500 people so far.

I want to see those numbers increase.

So, please, think of signing up for the newsletter and, despite Ace's wishes to cut the cord with Facebook, join the (closed) Facebook group.

43 There are shitloads of ossuaries all over Europe from WWI. Honeslty, we just have no idea. Just in Italy:

The memorial hosts in walled niches 6,099 identified soldiers; some great collective tombs host the remains of 3,226 unidentified fallen soldiers.

The main body of the monument of Monte Grappa contains the remains of 10,332 unidentified fallen soldiers and of 2,283 identified.

Inside the wall are niches where lie about a thousand French soldiers, arrived in April 1918 and died in the Battle of the Solstice and the Final Battle of Vittorio Veneto.

This monument, also known as the Shrine "of hundred thousand" contains the remains of 100,187 soldiers.

Here lie the remains of 454 fallen German soldiers and 8,128 of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Here is the large tomb that holds the remains of 4,700 soldiers remained nameless.

Inside are 9,707 fallen Italian (4,455 unknown) and 37 Austro-Hungarian

And that is just from WW I.

Europe is capable of making a lot of raw material to repair that cathedral.

Think about the coming war....

105 We went to Verdun when I was little, and I still remember a room full of skulls.

Also, there was a filled trench with bayonets sticking up, where an explosion had buried soldiers alive. They just left them in the trench.

The things you remember as a little kid.

161 "134 Czechia and Chechnya sound too much alike unless I'm pronouncing them wrong. "

I say Check-ee-ah or CheH-ee-ah if I want to sound pretentious. The H is rough, almost like the CH in Bach, but not as much throat-clearing. Chechnya is more like Chesh-knee-ya. The N in the middle and the more shshshy 'ch' are the difference. It is pretty close, but so are Slovakia and Slovenia.
Though that's why I liked Czechland. No ambiguity there. It makes more sense, if you think about it. Finnland is the land of the Finns, Scotland is the land of the Scots, Poland is the land of the Poles, and Ireland is the land of ire.

Perfect fit.

With Bitch McConnell on guard, stalwartly protecting Progressive interests in the Senate, he doesn't need to, that's why.

227 Best outcome of a Trump victory would be en masse resignations in Washington DC bureaucrats. That would be glorious and very beneficial to the nation, because they're the main problem and they never go away.

Republican, Democrat, it doesn't matter who the president is, they stay and stay for decades and are nearly impossible to get rid of. Hillary had to drum up that fake transportation office scandal to fire people and replace them with people that would look the other way when they misused public funds.

235 " Kind of morbid for a place or worship.

Posted by: steevy at May 20, 2016 03:35 PM (B48dK) "

Western Europeans were obsessed with death in the Middle Ages. The Church taught that each man or woman was born to his or her station and the greatest good was to endure whatever condition you were born into with good grace because you would receive your reward in Heaven. (Sounds familiar, no? The big difference was that Midieval Christians did not seek out death or try to take as many infidels with them as possible.) It was basically a way to keep the peasants from revolting every couple of years or so. Also, churches were decorated as teaching aids since most of the population, including a lot of the nobility, was illiterate. At the time of the Great Plague, many people interpreted it not so much as a disease but a punishment from God for Mankind's many, many sins. Creating ossuaries such as the one shown was an object lesson in the wages of sin. It also cleared out the graveyards. I've read accounts of mass graves where the earth covering the bodies heaved and reeked because of so many bodies being buried there in such a short period of time.
