Thread below the Gardening Thread [KT]

Propelled by a dung beetle, science rolls on.

Scientists in Sweden found that the beetles capture the picture of the sky while dancing on a ball of manure.

The beetles' navigational skills could aid the development of driverless vehicles, the researchers suggest. -

Those are among the Dung Beetle Sentences to Ponder at Marginal Revolution. Ponder away!

Incidentally, why did the Egyptians worship beetles that eat poop?

According to entomologist Yves Cambefort in his essay "Beetles as Religious Symbols," the scarab, so reasoned the Egyptians, rolls the turd along and disappears it, just as the sun emerges and vanishes every day.

Hmmm. Lately it seems to me like the news media rolls a few turds along for a day, then disappears them. Sometimes after behaving a bit like the Kung Fu Dung Beetles in the video at the link above. Any "trending" examples come to mind for you?

Incidentally, some of you may have had a momentary preview of this post before I disappeared it on Thursday, only to resurrect it today. Sort of like the sacred scarab beetle with its reappearing ball of dung, but less predictable. Forgot to put the entry in "draft" Thursday. AIEEE! Tense moments for me, weird moments for readers of AoSHQ.

Hope you can get away from the news for a while this weekend. Doing anything interesting?

25 I need to buy a mattress, and have never actually done so before. I've gotten by on family and friends in the past with hand me downs and one new one my brother got me decades ago that finally fell apart.

Any tips? According to research I should lie on the show models at least a few minutes to see if they are comfortable, and $600 base price (before sales) seems to be the minimum price to consider for regular use. I don't need the world's best mattress, and I have a Twin bed so its a bit cheaper at least.

36 the new springs and mattresses need full support in the frame, if you have just the rim around the frame or L-Brackets to hold the mattress in the frame the new box-springs will sag. I wound up having to put boards across the frame to keep the mattress/springs from sinking in the middle.
Apparently Sleep Country, where I bought my set, doesn't sell standard mattresses anymore, everything is pillow-top so you can't flip the mattress.
I was quite unhappy.

Got any foam shops in your area? I have an old "super single" waterbed, and the water mattress had commenced to leak, and it was also hard to get out of it. I went to a foam shop and had them make a mattress with 6 inches of regular foam, and two inches of memory foam, that was a drop-in replacement. Cost $300, and works great.

If you have boxsprings, cover the frame with plywood or boards to make a platform. Buy a foam mattress. I recommend Spa Sensations 8" memory foam, ordered thru Walmart. Cheap.

Flip the mattresses every now and then. It will last a long time even with pretty heavy usage --- not as long as a good standard mattress, to be sure, but you get a MUCH better bang for the buck.

179 Why would anyone want to see a naked Shakespeare play? I cant believe tax money is being used for that bullshit.

____

1. Why would anyone want to see _________? Put any show/movie in that blank and chances are someone has asked the question. Everyone has different tastes and if nekkid Hamlet is your thing, have at it.

Plus I don't think there was any tax money involved.

184 145 One of many things that pisses me off about BLM is that there are many areas in law enforcement that I believe legitimately need reform, but the valid stuff gets lost in the shuffle of grievance politics and opportunistic behavior by so-called "black leaders,"

I agree. Strongly.

Its not that their complaints aren't valid, there's real reason for concern. Its that they are totally coopted by a combination of scumbags and leftist cranks. Everything they're trying to accomplish has been taken over by people totally exploiting the concerns of families and people hurt by abusive cops and authorities.

188 The smoke in the bathroom could have moved into there from a fire in the avionics bay.

Sabotage by mechanic? Just bad luck breakdown as in an electrical short? But those systems are redundant to guard against that.

Or, fire started in bathroom as diversion?Followed by assault on the cockpit? Doesn't seem likely with the locks and protocols, etc.

193 Just popping in for a prayer request if any praying people haven't gone to a new thread.

I have a wedding to do tonight.

Tomorrow I have a dramatic performance at a church and I feel terrible. I've felt really bad all day. There is no understudy for this role. So prayers for my recovery and that I might give glory to God in both of these endeavors would be greatly appreciated.

Thx very much

197 I just had a very pleasant, attractive middle aged woman asking for my support6 for Bernie. She said "I can tell from the look on your face that you're not a supporter" (I guess that she hasn't seen the signs outside my house.) I said I haven't voted for a Democrat for years, I don't really support anyone running". (Most people here know i will vote for trump whom i don't like) However, i did manage to get my line in, "But I do think it's terrible the way the Bernie supporters have been disenfranchised-particularly in the NV caucus and i don't like Hillary Clinton." She said, "Well, you could still vote against Hillary in the primary. I told her that I didn't feel comfortable but maybe i should considering how much I( can't stand Hillary.

205 Quite a write-up over at U.K. Daily Mail about Egypt Air 804 today. "Investigators" now seem to be swinging back to on-board bomb after on-board fire thought yesterday. Aircraft went into a spiraled dive after smoke alerts went off.

208 It's ridiculous to have a nude version of Shakespeare. They're obviously trying to push the boundaries. Shakespeare was a poet and a brilliant dramatist. Nobody will be concentrating on the drama if they're watching the drama of nude actors. It's an insult to the memory of Shakespeare.

210 Front lavatory, by the cockpit, if memory serves, was identified as the location of the first smoke detection, probable bomb location.

Makes sense . The most vulnerable systems on an airliner are pilot and co-pilot. Thank God this didn't happen over a populated area.

211 Speaking of the media, now that I'm trying to post a couple of blog posts every day I'm reading a *lot* more news articles. OMG, they are so badly written it's appalling. Are they even written to a fifth grade level any more? Admittedly, I'm not that impressed with my own writing to this point, but I'm not getting paid for it either. I do certainly have a lot more sympathy for Ace though on the days he doesn't post much since I frequently fail to provide just the two posts that is my goal.
