Mid-Morning Open Thread: One Of These Is A Forgery [CBD]

Tsarevich Egg
House of Fabergé 1912

alexthechick made the point in a comment that while digital representations are wonderful, and allow us to see much more than would be possible in person, the impact can be diminished because it is difficult to appreciate scale, which is, of course, a significant part of art. But as AtC points out.....

It works on the converse too. Looking at, say, a Fabergé egg and seeing how small it is and how intricately worked is stunning

Fabergé is most famous for its eggs, but their other work was magnificent too. For some strange reason the quality declined after the company was nationalized in 1918. Who knew?

Raspigliosi Cup.jpg

The Rospigliosi Cup, once known as The Cellini Cup, was removed from exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art because it was found to be a magnificent fake. I remember seeing it as a kid, and then searching in vain for it on each subsequent visit. Fake or real....it's gorgeous.

I believe it was the insufferable Thomas Hoving (formerly of the Metropolitan Museum of Art) who said that the best forgeries are the ones that are still in the museums. Or something like that.

The BBC did a very good documentary on the Fabreges a couple of years ago. All escaped except one who the bolshies arrested and forced to appraise the treasures they had seized in order to sell. They showed the Fabrege country home which is falling apart but is still quite beautiful. It's all art deco.

258 250 IIRC the Baltimore cop facing today's verdict responded to the arresting officers' call and wasn't responsible for the van drive. The theory for his guilt is that because he wasn't initially on the scene, so that he didn't personally see "probable cause", his actions on Freddie Gray were an assault. The cop asked for a judge not a jury because there's no way a judge will convict on this, Let Us Pray.

My take is the only ones using cash are working poor, lower middle class, and entrepreneurs who haven't hit it big yet. The Government plans to get them all on medicaid and EBT cards so the class system can be fully implemented (Kasich). Nancy Pelosi's speeches on Obamacare made that clear.

Snuffboxed were a funny thing, weren't they? Quite the display-piece they were, when a gentleman would produce one from a pocket, tap the lid lightly, open it, and offer it to the gentlemen present. One NEVER took snuff in mixed company.....

One of those rituals from another world, snuff-taking. (I have my great-grandfather's snuff-box - a plain thing made of horn - and learned from his son-in-law - 'Pa' - how to take snuff, both in polite company, and when there's nobody watching.

The ritual differs from one case to the other, as you can imagine.)

Tidbit 1: I've heard jewelers refer to fake Faberge as "Fauxberge." (I told you, insignificant.)

2: I once worked with a pastry chef trying to design an egg-shaped cake for a fete at the Forbes Gallery. She said the logistics were horrendous. The only thing worse was trying to design a method of cutting it that didn't destroy it with the first swipe. She had to send a chart along with the cake.

Guy jumps into a lion pen in Chile. Lions ignore him. He takes off all his clothes and starts fucking with them.

Zoo people use water hoses to keep the lions away. He goes and grabs a lion. They try to hit the lions with a tranq dart but get the guy in the neck.

The lions start to drag the guy back to their sleeping quarters and the zoo keepers shoot two lions dead.

I would generally value a human life over lions' lives, but...

Doubt that. But their novel twisting and contorting of the law to try and convict the officer was entertaining, despite their legal theories being about as valid as Hillary being an honest politician.

213 The main reason for the sense of uncertainty, fear, anxiety, and discomfort in the country is the near-constant ramming of social change down the nation's thoat by this administration.

Economic times are tough, but ripping apart the social fabric over and over causes severe anxiety. Nobody knows what to expect, how to behave, what to avoid, and where to go any more. Every time you start to get a handle on the new rules imposed on us by radical leftists, they add more, and more insane ones.

The last time this happened, we got President Reagan.

Anyway, my favorite has always been the one with the miniature train inside (the "surprise"), in honor of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. It "worked" - I recall it had a spring you could wind in the locomotive, which would then pull the other cars on a flat surface.

219 ...well, wear the above-linked man-scarf with a full windsor knot, and nobody will think you're gay. They may think you missed the short bus and are now wandering around lost, though.

220 Christopher Taylor, while I don't find the comparison to late 70s/getting Reagan that good a fit in terms of the drivers of anxiety, the practical difference that matters is the electorate.

As we have seen over and over, we simply don't have the same electorate as in 1980. Duh - no, specifically and meaningfully we don't have the same set of post-war, Depression-seasoned human beings and their values in the electorate. Even new-issue "Reagan Democrats" that still exist, and they do, aren't really the same.

Unionization of public service incl. police and fire negates a great part of the effect such people have at the presidential level, I'd bet. Look at WI, where long-overdue (popular) reform of disastrous degradation in the education sector stopped well short of touching police/fire, vs. OH, where it didn't, and got spanked.

A crude but revealing index mark was the non-reaction to the jaw-dropping, outrageous administration behavior in 2013 towards WWII vets trying to visit their DC memorial during the shut-down theater. Try to even imagine the politics of such behavior in the Reagan era, or any time until recently.

Can't think of a better illustration of what a different country it has become.

Just oddly "trendy".

They were selling aquamarine chinos last time I was there. They definitely still have the classics, but I guess they're trying to reach a younger clientele or something. And we won't talk about the short suit from last year...
