Not always. San Diego Mayor Filner (D) was brought down. The trick seems to be to find some way to make the charges stick in the public mind, so that it's impossible to get away from them.

IIRC, one of Filner's schticks was to go after women who were sent to visit him as "victims of sexual harrassment or attempted rape". That kind of thing makes the public sit up and take notice, especially when it happens repeatedly (as was the case with Filner).

It also helps when it's more than "he said, she said". Unfortunately, that's hard to get in these sorts of things since they almost always happen when the victim and the assailant are alone together.

This is the thing. If it's a he-says vs. she-says situation, I have to ask myself who is the more credible.

AFAIK, Juanita Broderick has never accused anyone else of rape. She is not a professional victim, nor does she have any material interest in making the accusation.

Clinton, OTOH, has lied about his sexual misconduct repeatedly. He lied about Gennifer Flowers --- until she produced an audio tape. He lied about Paula Jones and had to settle the lawsuit she filed against him. He lied about Monica Lewinsky. He is a proven perjurer who lies even under oath.

The actual impeachment, the Senate proceeding, was a half-hearted fight that was almost over before it was done. Even then, it was largely treated as a sex scandal, not perjury, obstruction of justice, and the like.

More serious allegations, such as rape, sexual assault, and harassment were never taken up by anybody significant in the party.

I have always had a hunch that the fact we had men like Bob Livingston, Newt Gingrich, and Dennis Hastert in the party leadership was a major reason why.

None of the issues that would actually help women were allowed into it because all the energy had to go to those two things. True, but

1. If they, or anybody else significant in the party, ever made hay out of Kathleen Willey, Juanita Broderick, etc. in the 1990s or ever, it escaped my attention.

2. I don't believe there's a significant difference in personal ethics between them and a lot of other politicians. Okay, I'll assume they're not pedophiles; but I don't think we had men like manning the leadership in the House and yet had a bunch of clean guys over on the other side.

If you read the literature, the Founders were very careful to make each path to power as convoluted and distinctly different as possible to make it difficult for any one faction to easily attain too many powerful positions.

Fortunately for us, our progressive rulers saw through that and have been attempting to "fix" the system since the early 1900's.
