Frederic Remington (1861-1909), Indians Simulating Buffalo, 1908, oil on canvas

Here's what the Google Cultural Institute has to say about this painting:

Completed a year before his death, Indians Simulating Buffalo was commissioned by publishers P. F. Collier and Son, with whom Remington had a contract. The painting was used as the cover image of the September 18, 1909, issue of Collier's Magazine. Remington's paintings of 1907-1908 reflect increasing Impressionist influence. In this canvas, he adapted the style's intense palette to record the strong sunlight and parched landscape, while the brushstrokes delineating the buffalo robes and the strong vertical blue and reddish lines that build up the shadows beneath them are similar to the Impressionists' brushwork

I love this painting. I confess that I tend to enjoy depictions of the West and Southwest. (Another favorite artist of mine is Bev Doolittle.)

A bit about Remington's career as an illustrator:

At age nineteen, Remington made his first trip into the old West of the 1880s where he saw the vast prairies, the buffalo herds, unfenced cattle country, and some the last major confrontations between the U.S. Cavalry and native Americans. In subsequent years, he made many trips to the West and Great Plains. He worked as cowboy, ranch hand, lumberjack, hunted grizzly bears in New Mexico, and became a gold miner in Apache country in Arizona. He also tried other ventures, including sheep ranching in Kansas and part owner of a Kansas City saloon. Other government and business ventures lasted only a few months in some cases. But along with his travels and experiences, he continued to draw. He sent illustrations back East to newspapers and magazines, among them, Outing Magazine, Harper's Weekly and Scribners. Remington's work hit the market at a good time, as tales of the West were very popular in Eastern cities. Publishers used everything he sent.

Remington's first full-page magazine cover under his own name appeared in Harper's Weekly in January 1886. He was 25. With financial backing from an uncle, he was able to pursue his art career and support his wife. Commissions came as well. In 1886, he was sent to Arizona by Harper's Weekly to cover the government's war against Geronimo. A trip to Canada in 1887, produced illustrations of the Blackfoot, the Crow Nation, and the Canadian Mounties. In 1888, two of his paintings were used on U. S. Postal stamps. He also supplied illustrations for a book by Teddy Roosevelt that was first serialized in Century Magazine. More than 70 of his illustrations were used in Frances Parkman's novel, Oregon Trail. Remington's first one-man art show came in 1890 with twenty-one paintings and was very well received. About that time, becoming more of an established artist, he and his wife moved to New Rochelle, New York where he had a large studio.

The Frederic Remington Art Museum is in Ogdensburg, New York, where his family lived during his youth. Follow this link for a virtual tour. Has anyone been there?

Someone killed and took the head of a 30-point buck on the land as a trophy a couple of decades back. The outrage was such the perp turned himself in to avoid less formal justice from the locals...

50 I enjoyed reading that Robert Reich post in the sidebar. For one thing, I've always found him oddly likable: appalling on the substance, but just a lot funnier and more honest than a lot of lefty former officials and commentators.

And then there was this:

"Never, ever give up fighting against the increasing concentration of wealth and power at the top, which is undermining our democracy and distorting our economy."

I am fighting it, Robert. By opposing the socialist policies you push, which inevitably lead to more of this, which lead to you and your ilk claiming that the obvious solution is more socialism.

Bonus point: Wealthy professor at Berkeley decries concentration of wealth and power.

52 The Plains Indians commonly burned entire prairies to force herds of bison over cliffs where they would only harvest a few of the carcasses for food and leave the rest to rot.

Also, of course, the modern Homo Sapien Native Americans slaughtered in a genocide the original native occupants of the Western Hemisphere, who were the Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons who were here first.
So much for the myth of the peaceful and Earth-friendly "Native American."

And to top it off, the "great horse culture of the Plains" that the movie Dances with Wolves laments eventually disappeared only existed because of the Spanish, who introduced horses to the Western Hemisphere. Prior to that it is doubted that any Native Americans lived on the Great Plains in any significant numbers.

All of that being said, it's a beautiful painting.

"Then, for whatever reason, the Justice Department trial lawyers appearing in this Court chose not to tell the truth about this DHS activity. The first decision was certainly unsupportable, but the subsequent decision to hide it from the Court was unethical."

Hanen seemed to lament that he couldn't disbar the attorneys involved, but he barred the out-of-state attorneys from enjoying the right to practice law in Texas.

"The court does not have the power to disbar the counsel in this case, but it does have the power to revoke the pro hac vice status of out-of-state lawyers who act unethically in court," he wrote. "By a separate sealed order that it is simultaneously issuing, that is being done."

88 So if there's a war over the war on women, it will definitely be waged by and against both major parties.

"Sexism is not limited to one political party or the other," said Susan Carroll, a professor of political science and women's and gender studies at New Jersey's Rutgers University. "It clearly manifests itself across the political spectrum."

And Democrats gave two prime examples this week. Rendell, in an interview with The Washington Post, said Trump's comments about women will backfire on him because "There are probably more ugly women in America than attractive women."

95 During one 25-minute interview on Thursday, among the few the likely Democratic nominee has granted, she was asked about Trump a dozen times. That's an average of once every two minutes, and doesn't even count the number of times Clinton mentioned the presumptive Republican nominee unprompted to make a point.

This wasn't an accident, but a result of Trump's deliberate communications strategy to flood the zone. In the Republican primary, the New York businessman's ubiquitous presence on television, and social media, primarily Twitter, helped sink an experienced field of opponents.

They were constantly off balance and on defense -- and being forced to respond to Trump reinforced an image among GOP voters that the real estate mogul was the only candidate offering solutions to their problems.

Visit Custer State Park in southwest South Dakota. Very large herds of buffalo (bison!) roaming around. A lot of un-attached males roaming the roads. They're YUGE!
This is where the bison hunting scene from "Dances with Wolves" was filmed. Regardless of what you think of the movie, this was a pretty exciting film sequence, and they had to get it all in one take.

189 On the general topic of cultural sensitivity in the arts...I'm writing my first novel and another of the women in my critique group is in a fairly select online class for writing middle readers. They had the chance to pitch to agents recently and the class teachers suggested that if they were "black, hispanic, Asian, or LGBT" that they should be sure to mention it in their bio. Three pitches were chosen to automatically be sent to agents: Asian girl martial arts star, African-American girl-magician, and Hispanic daughter of illegal immigrants. Those were the stories. And I'm sensing a theme.

There was a big kick-up in the class when the teachers recommended a Newberry Award Winning book about Native Americans written by a white woman and one member of the class who identifies as NA said that the whole thing was "problematic".

It's a brave new world, folks.

My married name is Hispanic. Should I include information in my pitch and bio that I am not entitled for extra consideration based on my last name?

255 where has Allahpundit gone at HotGas for almost 2 weeks?

If he has left the site its one more nail in its coffin, and Ed will be the last man standing who I have any interest in reading. Jazz is OK but the rest of the new crew are all exactly the same and seem to me to be far more overtly partisan and decidedly less incisive and humorous. They also don't seem to have anywhere near the real-life experiences of Ed/AP/Jazz which makes them dudes so readable.

When one goes straight from college to a senior position at an online thingie, without ever stopping to hold a job in the real world, ones take on life liberty and the pursuit of happy hour tends to ring hollow because one doesnt have the requisite life experience to know wtf one is talking about.

Incisive humor is why I am/was/have been a devoted reader for over a decade, and those qualities are pretty much gone from the HA site nowadays, and the Facebook-only comment regime has imo taken the best part of the place (the often rowdy but always readable reader participation) and chucked it on the fire.

If AP has left, I will soon follow. Capt Ed's take on things can be found on numerous other platforms because he has a life, and people outside the millennial bubble want to hear what he has to say.

258 The Plains Indians commonly burned entire prairies
to force herds of bison over cliffs where they would only harvest a few
of the carcasses for food and leave the rest to rot.

Also, of course, the modern Homo Sapien Native Americans slaughtered
in a genocide the original native occupants of the Western Hemisphere,
who were the Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons who were here first.

So much for the myth of the peaceful and Earth-friendly "Native American."

And to top it off, the "great horse culture of the Plains" that the
movie Dances with Wolves laments eventually disappeared only existed
because of the Spanish, who introduced horses to the Western Hemisphere.
Prior to that it is doubted that any Native Americans lived on the
Great Plains in any significant numbers.

All of that being said, it's a beautiful painting.
