Thursday Morning News Dump (5/19/16) [Mis. Hum.]

1 Good Morning Horde!

Today we have some honest to God, no bullshit, good news for Trump fans in the polling department.

That is assuming that polls this far out matter *wink*

Fox released their latest results in their polling series, and for the first time in months we are seeing a genuine trend of increased support for Trump. In this poll he leads Clinton 45-42.

The important thing in polling this race this year is to ignore Clinton's variability and focus on Trump's number. As I have been pointing out, he has been at a remarkably stable level of support around 40% for months now. A few days ago the Gravis poll came out of nowhere and showed him with a 46% level of support. Well Fox is confirming that this appears to be a real trend, finding him at 45%.

The most important thing is that this is movement WITHIN the polling series. Last month this same poll showed him losing to Clinton 48-41. That is a 4 point increase in his level of support in a month, and matches the results of Gravis. With all caution, I would read this as a real trend and not an outlier.

We should be seeing more polls this week from Battleground and Suffolk, so will get a few more data points to see if this is real movement.

The key change in the internal results in this poll is a big improvement in Trump's numbers with Republican women. He picked up 10 points in support in this demographic. He is still underwater with women overall, but not as bad as before.

The overall RCP average shows Clinton leading 3.9%, but I would not put too much stock in that number. The trendlines in the averages have shown gradual improvement for Trump and worsening for Clinton for the last month. I expect those numbers to continue to change as new polls are released this week.

Nobody cares except the secret service or the FBI and they don't get the case until the money counting machine at the bank spits the tainted bills out, and by then it's too late to track.

19 "will the GOPe be too fearful to free the economy from all his ridiculous, economy killing regulations?"

Their is no evidence the GOPe wants to free anything. Their is ample evidence that Obama embodies the GOPe's values.

Get rid of build-their-dam-fence McCain. Get rid of bailout Ryan. Get rid of amnesty Rubio. Don't know if you can get rid of Miss Lindsey Graham. Surly Orin Hatch can be outmaneuvered. Then the GOP might do something worth while.

27 At the end of this Congress, the GOP will have controlled the house for 18 of 22 years or in other words, the power of the purse.

In that time the debt has gone from just under 5 trillion to just under 20 trillion, so who ever wrote that article in the sidebar can go suck a bag of dicks.

And the fiscally "CON-setvative" GOP congress just gave the stumble fuck in chief 250 million more than he asked for.

That's a shit ton of walking around money the administration can divert to pet projects, phone pen initiatives and to the various thugs and reprobates on the Donk payroll to alter the outcome of the election.

2. Mark A. Robbins was nominated by President Barack Obama on December 5, 2011 to serve as a Member of the Merit Systems Protection Board. At the time of his nomination, Mr. Robbins was the General Counsel of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.

The GOP is, in fact, dead. I am now convinced that it's only reason for being is to obstruct, confound and sabotage any effort by what is still a majority of Americans from forming an effective political movement to block and reverse the Progressive Democrat and Republican counterrevolution.

A third party is useless since it would only water down our vote and ensure a victory by the Statists.

How we in fact kill the GOP - and I mean really destroy it - is a mystery to me.

Since that is my own personal version of reality, it must be respected and honored. The following day I might self identify as a man who dresses like a man.

If you were a young black American, you would have (presuming you survived the abortionist and presuming you didn't get two in the hat from a gangsta drive-by) grown up in a toxic stew of racism and deliberate, inculcated ignorance, aided by a dysfunctional school system designed to miseducate and / or confine you and an at-home atmosphere of resentment at any show of "acting white." But damn if Ted Cruz doesn't deserve high accolades for seeing the writing on the wall and stepping aside... look at this glorious chaos on the left. We ignored most of their side show in favor of our own, but they are even less unified then we are, and I believe it will stay that way. I don't know if Ted decided to step aside, or the RNC twisted his and Kasich's arms to get out, but it was the right call.

I think the healing in the party is ahead of schedule, and maybe we'll have a smallerish faction sit out, or go third party, or vote for (shudder) HRC. But we'll have a smaller group of defectors than the democrats.

(I've watched every episode of "Air Crash Investigations" at least twice; much to my spouse's chagrin. "How can you watch a show that tells you everything that can go catastrophically wrong on an airplane flight?") And incidents that are thought to be terrorism almost never turn out to be terrorism. (Except in Italy, where they thoroughly botch every crash investigation, apparently.)

A plane with 66 people on board doesn't seem like a big enough target to be attractive for a terrorist. The sudden maneuvering (if it happened; early reports are often wrong) could have been a response to a failure in the engines or control surfaces.

Exactly what I thought when I read the line:

There have quite obviously been two sets of rules for a few decades now with regards to the D's and R's, and I'm not sure why anyone would think the media would cast the Donks in a negative light over that.

When the Donks do it, it's Fighting For The People. When the R's do it, it's Failing To Govern.

169 The power of words

Yesterday FenelonSpouse and I went to our son's final track meet. Spouse was driving a school bus for one of the opposing teams and I went because often the meets are a distance and I haven't attended very many. (I did better when he was on Cross Country and the meets were closer.)

At any rate, as mostly everybody on here knows, our son is on the autism spectrum (high functioning) and is rather quirky. He sits with people at lunch, but he's never really mentioned andy friends which he has. They don't do anything together if he has any.

Our son was competing in the 800 meter race. As he took off there was a blonde slim boy wearing the team sweatshirt-obviously on the team two or three people down from us who yelled out, "Go ________!" (Our son's name). It made us happy that someone said that. Now maybe the team supports each other. but when you have a kid who keeps to himself it felt really good!

It made me think what power our words have either-as the Bible says-to be a blessing or a curse. We were blessed!

I would take a 10 percent chance getting one from Trump's list over 100 % chance of getting one off Hillary's. I think we're all agreed that the chance that Trump picks from that list is over 90 %.

Both of your concerns relate to a situation where the Democrats have influence in the Senate. Not sure what Trump can do about that, what with all the sookie babies planning to stay home and let Dems be elected.

Trump should expect that the Republican's will use whatever option, nuclear or otherwise, to eliminate the filibuster and get stuff done particularly the SCOTUS nominees.

Plus I would rather have Trump negotiating than the GOPe if the last 30 years are anything to go by. I think he will come out on top and I think the these picks are something he would work to get.

Not Catholic, nor even Christian, but I think you're probably right about the Pope and his role.

That said, it might be nice if his admonitions to the flock weren't accompanied by encomia and flattery of people who want them all dead.

Still, the Pope is not a temporal ruler, nor is he a defender of the faith, and he has an undeniable place.

207 he got crucified because he told the Jews and Pharisees that they needed to raise their game and be better.
=============================================

He did tell the Pharisees they needed to be better, but that's not what got Him crucified. What got Him crucified was that He claimed to be God, which was blasphemy in their eyes. A charge punishable by death. He told them the only hope they had of getting better was not through works of righteousness and keeping the law, rather it was admitting that they could not keep the law at all, and as a result of that, they needed to turn to Him, the Lamb of God who takes away sin.

Some of the Pharisees did become followers of Jesus, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimithea (the one who provided the tomb for the crucufied Christ) are a couple we know about.

Russia's biggest bank uses The Podesta Group as its lobbyist in

the best-connected Democratic machers in the country. He founded the
firm in 1998 with his brother John, formerly chief of staff to President
Bill Clinton, then counselor to President Barack Obama, Mr. Podesta is
the very definition of a Democratic insider. Outsiders engage the
Podestas and their well-connected lobbying firm to improve their image
and get access to Democratic bigwigs......

It should be noted that Tony Podesta is a big-money bundler for the
Hillary Clinton presidential campaign while his brother John is the

took off there was a blonde slim boy wearing the team
sweatshirt-obviously on the team two or three people down from us who
yelled out, "Go ________!" (Our son's name). It made us happy that
someone said that. Now maybe the team supports each other. but when you
have a kid who keeps to himself it felt really good!

It made me think what power our words have either-as the Bible says-to be a blessing or a curse. We were blessed!

228 People thought the Messiah was going to come down and whip the shit out of everyone. But you don't get the Messiah you want, you get the Messiah you need. Jesus was the Lamb of God - the Sacrificial Lamb - who was stripped and forced to wear a crown of thorns and beaten and marched up a hill with the cross He was to be nailed to on His back. That is the Son if God, that is God's plan. Whipping ass was mans plan. So getting pissed because the Pope is not the Pope you wanted seems to me to be as pointless as getting pissed that you didn't get the Messiah you wanted. Let go of your expectations .

Part of Putin's appeal and popularity is the stinging memory and shame of those days. People seem to think that the collapse of the USSR just sort of happened, and then along came Putin and the billionaire oligarchs, some of whom are his allies, some of whom are his enemies.

People forget the sad spectacle of that drunken idiot yeltsin, who had to be locked in his rooms at night to keep him from making a bigger ass of himself. People forget that the US air-lifted hundreds of millions of dollars in actual cash to help keep the Russian economy from collapsing under the weight of its final failure. People forget seeing Russian army units who hired themselves out as field-hands in order to eat, because the government had no money to pay them. People forget military installations with the electricity disconnected for non-payment. People forget seeing the streets of every city full of desperate people begging for a few kopeks to stave off death another day.

Most people forget this, but Russians do not. And they credit Putin in large measure for relieving their distress.

And because of the doctrine of Federal primacy that any smaller governmental body (state, city, HOA etc.) is also prohibited from doing so.

But this is not a sane world - so deuces and one eyed jacks wild.

I couldn't agree with you more, but it appears we are in the minority.

Trump has done nothing so far to address the fundamental problems that caused me to finally decide not to vote for him in the general, which is his right. As it is my right not to vote for him. I am no longer a Republican anyway so he's not "my guy".

Having no one to root for in this particular game, I have decided to watch Politics as entertainment. And I look forward to Trump beating the Clintons like a redheaded stepchild, metaphorically of course.

293 You know the funny part about the bathroom wars? I was in North Carolina Monday and Tuesday for business meetings. The airport had unisex bathrooms as well as Men and Women room. The business where we had the meeting had only unisex bathrooms.

This is not the modern equivalent of Selma.

I also met a cool Army guy who told me about the time he did a Dukes of Hazzard jump and got an uparmored HUMVEE fully airborne while chasing Hajis. Military guys have the best stories.

There is another blog where I was a regular for 10 years, but left a couple of months because the TDS was over the top. I checked in last week, and if anything, it's gotten worse. It's like an echo chamber. Sad.

Do you think Cruz was not capable of that?
Posted by: Joe Hallenbeck at May 19, 2016 09:48 AM (V8uX9)

No, he wasn't because he didn't.

Again Cruz couldn't win the Rep. primary season and his numbers were falling by the end of it.

That is not a successful retail politician.

Cruz will have another shot but he really needs to learn how to communicate to the average Joe and Jane.

Not just spout red meat for conservatives. He needs to learn how to connect his philosophical/political ideas to their concerns.

Trump just didn't call other candidates names, he spoke directly to their concerns.

Yeah, neither Trump nor his supporters have been very gracious in victory. Unless, "Suck it, losers," is the new epitome of graciousness.

There is no TDS on the Right. Derangement Syndrome requires a derangement based on false information or history. The opposition to Trump is based on his history, lies and inconsistencies.

Not being catholic myself, is there a Job Description for the Pope?

Real question.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at May 19, 2016 09:16 AM (ptqRm)

Break out your bible and read the fifth chapter of the New Testament; "The Acts of The Apostles".
The Pope is theoretically the successor to Peter in who Jesus said was the rock in which his church would be built. The church's bishops are supposed to be the successors to the apostles and the Pope is their leader.
And no I am not Catholic myself.

300 Indeed. It seems like elections are decided on the basis of vacuous bumper-sticker slogans. "Make America Great Again" is just "Hope and Change," just older and whiter.
Posted by: V the K at May 19, 2016 09:34 AM (O7MnT)

Adams makes a great point about slogans. They are there to define at a very high level what the campaign is about. What is Hillary's slogan? But anyways, Adams points out that Trump's slogan is great for two reasons, nostalgia and repeatability. Nostalgia is obvious, but repeatability is interesting. How many people now use Make X Great Again? If you do, it makes you think of Trump's slogan. I did it just this weekend before reading Adams' post. It's a great insight.

May I disagree a little? I don't think anyone on this blog has TDS, but it is real. See: the late AmishDude.

But I think too many are too ready to conflate substantive disagreements with Trump, of which there are many, with TDS. Some expect us to fall in line because he has an R after his name and WINNIG!

No thanks.

There is when you go beyond Trump's flaws and lot on the establishment Right did.

- Trump is Hitler
- Look at the violence Trump encourages and of his supporters
- Trump supporters are racists and so is Trump
- A host of statements taken out of context as supposed contradictions that with a fair reading weren't.

Most of the Trump supporters here have been fairly gracious with Trump winning. The most you get is the standard "We must all now unite behind the nominee." We would be hearing the same thing if Rubio or some other GOPe candidate won.

This is true, which is why I don't think #nevertrump really gets who the supporters actually, we're the same people that voted for Bush, McCain, and Romney. We have some new temporary republicans coming from the left. We have a very loud but not influential social media contingent, that is unfortunate. #nevertrump is also much louder than they are influential, and the influence seems to be waning by the hour, as people wake up to the fact that Trump is actually capable of winning.

You didn't break the blog, and it is more complicated than that.

"I won" is the necessary predicate to accomplish what politics is about in the end, "getting your agenda enacted."

It sucks, and in a sane Republic that cleaved to its Constitution "just win baby" wouldn't be so vital.

We are not a sane Republic.

I always think of the element mercury -- beneficial while well-contained but toxic in larger quantities. Cleaning up bits and pieces of mercury when the thermometer containment is broken is difficult to impossible.

Style is not quite as important as the documented mutability.
