A Smart Military Blog Five Military Weapons We Should Have Kept Personally, I loved the Tomcat, but I've heard that there were growing logistics problems with keeping them in service. I also had no idea that we sank all of our Spruance-class destroyers. It seems beyond stupid to me, why not keep them in mothballs somewhere? Yes, I know that's an expense, but you can't tell me that maintaining these ships in a reserve fleet would cost more than building just 1 new one from scratch. Until they are completely antiquated, if the ball goes up, they'd be a lot better than no ships at all, particularly if the U.S. Navy suffered sudden loses at the outset of a war. They could be back in service in a fraction of the time it takes to build new ships. It's a Dangerous World Out There New York: Not safe for zebras. Vans: Not safe for bison. SJW angst Why the ‘Ghostbusters’ Trailer Is the Most ‘Disliked’ Movie Trailer in YouTube History There is a lot of hatred directed towards the new trailer, primarily because it stars four women (though the haters would have you believe misogyny is not the real driving force behind their invective) and seemingly not at all connected to its quality. This is, bluntly, bullshit. Mysogyny has nothing to do with it. Women can do anything men can do (even pee standing up), and SJWs aside, it's the rare Troglodyte who thinks they can't. No, the problem with the new film is that it has no other reason to exist except “Grrlz!”. Ghostbusters was one of the greatest films of all time, thanks in no small part to smart writing and the chemistry between the stars. Naturally people are going to dislike ruining that just to push a social agenda. I can think of lots of ways an all girls Ghostbusters could be made (how about...The GB have started selling franchises, and these girls pool their money to start one? You could even have Murray, Aykroyd or Hudson cameo at their grand opening.). That movie I would watch. This one? Not so much. Not So Big News

Through 6, I was hoping through a perfect game. Then he walked a Cub, and i was hoping for a no-no. Then Rizzo hit a double and I was hoping for a shutout and complete game. Then, with one out to go, Anderson gave up 2 HRs and our closer had to come in. Final score 4-2. I wish it had ended differently - but so do the Cubs. I'll take the win. Got to see government in action today - I went to a State Highway meeting about proposed road changes that affect a piece of commercial property my parents own. There has been talk about improving the road for twelve years now and the earliest any improvements could be done would be 2020. And we're talking about just a half-mile stretch of road leading up to a major intersection. And to top it off, nobody from the county was there to explain what the county envisions for the road and the area. The county wants to turn it into a quaint ersatz 'Main Street', the state wants to move traffic through the intersection, and the property owners don't want their parking taken away by road improvements. I don't think anybody is going to be happy when all is said and done.

"Personally, I loved the Tomcat, but I've heard that there were growing logistics problems with keeping them in service."
There were. It was a hell of a jet, but also hell on maintainers. A ridiculous ratio of maintenance hours to flight hours. Some of this was down to merely the aged design of electronics and hydraulics. Towards the end, Grumman were pitching a combo deal. Build the new generation Super Tomcat 21, and, into the bargain, remanufacture most of the existing older Tomcat fleet to the same spec. Including tough new contractual specs for dispatch reliability. Completely redesigned and simplified systems. Greatly improved uptime, markedly lower costs. But no. Already at that time, the big multi-service push was on for the new wonder jet that would cover USAF, USN and USMC requirements all in one package. There was a lot of lobbying money greasing the skids in Clowngress for that program to get going. And none of that money came from Grumman, who were never going to be in contention for that fat new contract. Too small, too undercapitalized. I would move that of course it could never ever be appropriate to name an armed vessel of war after a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and that Obama's name had to be perforce removed from consideration forever, an argument which the left would tie themselves in knots over. Unfortunately, that pooch has already been screwed. Anthrax, smallpox, sarin, and VX. All of these would have been far more effective in Afghanistan. I think I was the last holdout for biological/chemical warfare on active duty. You're making the classic mistake of ceding the rhetorical grounds to the enemy.
Nobody cedes any ground by telling the truth. You cede the rhetorical ground when you accept their lies as the basis of the discussion. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at May 17, 2016 10:53 PM (39g3+) I agree. You aren't fighting on their terms when you point out the beginning statement is wrong. "Women can do anything men can do" is factually incorrect. WD had to add qualifiers to make this statement even plausible. I got into a debate with a guy over the Bible treating men and women differently with regards to roles in the church. I simply pointed out. 1. Men and women are not the same biologically (bearing young, organs, etc.) 2. Physical differences also lead to psychological difference. 3. Different does not mean different worth. 4. Exceptions do not disprove the rule. (The fact that some single woman can do something as well as the average man doesn't disprove points 1 and 2. People have survived falling from great heights. It doesn't mean I should jump off of a five story building.) He politely agreed to my logic and then went away commenting that it still wasn't right. WD, you are the one conceding the basic point. ground when you accept their lies as the basis of the discussion. I've given specific examples of what I'm talking about. Feminists are all set to argue to the death about "can", and utterly unprepared to contest "how well". See the basketball example above. Women can't dunk! XXXX can. Well, it isn't a regulation size ball! And now you're arguing with a pissed off feminist of the size of your respective balls. Does this strike anyone as productive? Contrast: Women can't dunk! XXXX can. Oh. My mistake. Sorry, I was wrong. And furthermore....wait, wha...? I was wrong. Now here, give her this basketball and tell her to take it to the hoop against Kobe. Neither, I'm arguing with a woman. Women cannot dunk, because dunk has a specific meaning, and it doesn't mean "jump on a trampoline and put a ping pong ball through a 5-foot hoop." It doesn't even matter whether the person I'm talking to agrees with me or changes their mind. All that matters is the truth. Whether they change their minds or not is not in my hands. Whether I tell the truth or not is. I worked for an electrical contractor who was colorblind. My dad repaired color TVs for decades while color blind. He knew what it was supposed to look like. But people misunderstand what colorblind means. It doesn't mean you cannot see colors like a dog, it means you have a hard time discerning the difference between certain colors. This is, bluntly, bullshit. Mysogyny has nothing to do with it. Women can do anything men can do (even pee standing up), and SJWs aside, it's the rare Troglodyte who thinks they can't.
I gotta go with those calling bullshit. Like things that require upper body strength. There is a reason that up until recently, women were excluded from some professions such as firefighters, and it isn't misogyny. Part of a firefighters job is to carry unconscious people out of burning buildings. Not all of those people are going to be wee little babies. Some of them will be great big fat slobs. We still want our firefighters to be able to carry them out. You made the point that even if women can't deadlift as much as men, they can still deadlift. That's not the point. Being able to deadlift 100 lbs just isn't going to cut it in some situations. In some situations, you need the people who can lift the most that people can lift. True, that won't just exclude women, it will exclude plenty of men as well. But, it will still exclude women. It isn't a hatred of women that leads people to make these observations, it's just reality. Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at May 17, 2016 11:09 PM (R+30W) 142

My dad repaired color TVs for decades while color blind. He knew what it was supposed to look like. But people misunderstand what colorblind means. It doesn't mean you cannot see colors like a dog, it means you have a hard time discerning the difference between certain colors. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at May 17, 2016 11:08 PM ------ There are several different versions of color-blindness. I tend to mix up red/green for example. I met a guy who could not see yellow marker on a white-board. Anyway, color-blindness is not all the same thing, and it's definitely not all "inability to see color". It isn't a hatred of women that leads people to make these observations, it's just reality.
Which is exactly my point! They intentionally make the discussion so broad that they can argue argue over niggardly points all day long. It's intentional! Don't go there. Look at this thread. All of you are arguing specifics and exceptions against a broader point that I never made. I never said women can do anything as well as men can (or vice versa). I simply said they could. I want to get the discussion down to "as well" too, and the way to do that is to take away the "can't" straw man. Didn't any of y'all study rhetoric or debate? There is no such thing as a woman who tires of having men movee things.
-- Perhaps. But women do get tired of ASKING men to move things. Hence, the wheel. Also, it's OK that the sexes have different abilities. I think women and men should embrace who they are. That's why they change the physical requirements for women to get them into jobs like firemen. This is just leftist-injected, stupid, inexcusable, reality-defying trash trash.

YF-23 was faster. And more stealthy. In all tested RF bands and in IR. YF-22 was considerably more maneuverable in a simulated dogfight. Better yaw and roll response. Much better pitch response. Faster, more accurate nose pointing. USAF fighter generals still privately harbored glorious Technicolor dreams of white scarves and gun kills. The better dogfighting jet was the obvious pick. According to the Obama administration, there OFFICIALLY is no such things as MALE or FEMALE.
http://preview.tinyurl.com/jlkrsgx "Biological sex" is "assigned" at birth by a doctor. A Federal circuit court has even dismissed it as "so called 'biological sex'". http://preview.tinyurl.com/gvacjpc Funny how one's "sexual orientation" is hardwired in when biological sex itself is just a "social construct". What makes matters even more frightening is that people are being increasingly punished for not validating other people's gender. In New York, a business will be heavily fined if they don't ask for a customers "preferred gender pronouns" and use them... they can even be fined is another customer doesn't use them! http://preview.tinyurl.com/jbe7efj Not even the Hobson's choice of "if you don't want to bake a Gay wedding cake or use "xir/xirs/xirself" pronouns, then you shouldn't be working in that business"... (because according to the courts, you loose your free speech rights when you try to make a buck). The irony: You can be denied service because you do not say there are five lights... in order to prevent people from being denied service. But, "The Greatest Generation" is a term made popular by journalist Tom Brokaw to describe the generation who grew up in the United States during the deprivation of the Great Depression, and then went on to fight in World War II, as well as those whose productivity within the war's home front made a decisive material contribution to the war effort, for which the generation is also termed the G.I. Generation. http://tinyurl.com/h7uwpd7 Reminder: FDR was president from 1932 until his death in 1945. The Great Depression started in 1929. WWII for the US was end of 1941 until 1945. True, but he does have a point. The war started in 1942 for the US, but didn't really technically get going until 1943. If you were 18 in 1943, you didn't vote until 1946, after FDR was dead. According to the Obama administration, there OFFICIALLY is no such things as MALE or FEMALE. -- So, on one of those crazy conspiracy sites (which are IMHO, highly entertaining) put forth the proposition that the whole "gender free movement" is to get people used to transhumanism-at some point, we'll all be gender free neuters, like the gray aliens. The other theory is that it's part of a Marxist theory to weaken the family by sexualizing everything-- this was supposedly done in Germany in the 1970's. Child sex was encouraged, and nothing was private-- essentially parents lose their role, to be replaced by the state. Posted by: shibumi who is awaiting SMOD at May 18, 2016 12:06 AM (AHDxb) 348
"The Greatest Generation" is a term made popular by journalist Tom Brokaw to describe the generation who grew up in the United States during the deprivation of the Great Depression, and then went on to fight in World War II, as well as those whose productivity within the war's home front made a decisive material contribution to the war effort, for which the generation is also termed the G.I. Generation.
Well, if they grew up during the Great Depression, that means they were children at the time FDR got elected the first time, no? If they were 21 in '32, and voted for FDR, they'd be 31 in '42, and almost too old for the the draft. My limits for Greatest Generation would be birthdates between 1907 and 1927, maybe a couple years wiggle room at either end. And as you concede, there were many people who were fighting in WWII who were older than 18. Some, quite a bit older. If you would like me to concede that there were soldiers fighting at the start of WWII who were too young to have voted for FDR, I so concede. But, "The Greatest Generation" describes many, many more people than those who were 18 in 1942. If we generalize, it is accurate to say that the person who was the president during and of the greatest generation was FDR. Especially since FDR was also reelected in 1944. Posted by: Anon Y. It's not a theory, and if I was at home I could give you links. The replacement of the family with the state has always been an intregal part of the Marxist blueprint for Utopia. They've always grudgingly admitted if not exactly advertised that fact. Engels was big on the concept, Marx dialed it way back in their published works on the theory that the world wasn't ready for it yet, social attitudes would have to be manipulated and changed before they could be more open about their intentions. Part of Mengele's reason for his demented research in Auschwitz was in order to find ways to increase fertility, particularly to get women to have more twins and multiple pregnancies. I'm no expert on the names of generations, but Wikipedia claims that the term "lost generation" is used to describe those that came of age during the first world war. It looks like they use the term Silent Generation to describe the group you are talking about. But that aside... Having WWII veteran's status was a big help politically. Someone born during the war just didn't have the gravitas of someone who fought in it. The F-14 ran into the Hornet Mafia and the JSF Mafia along with the Peace Dividend. So the plan to remanufacture many low-time As and Bs got axed and the number of new build D models was also chopped. Which forced the Navy to keep fielding three airframes, two different radars, and two different engines until things started to go sideways in a big way on the maintenance side.
Tomcat 21 and ASF Tomcat were concepts that were truly mouth watering in capability without significantly altering the airframe. Pilot and RIO would have had configurable glass cockpits, built-in LANTIRN, full smart weapons capability while keeping the ability to fire missiles or gun. The glove vanes would have been deleted and additional fuel on top of the current 16,100lbs would have been carried there. But again, Grumman was not positioned with the right political clout. So we will never know if those versions of the Tomcat would have been game changers. Posted by: Anna Puma at May 18, 2016 01:14 AM (9Slmu) 410
Well, wish me luck. Just put in a bid on a 2009 ex-RCMP Suburban situated on Vancouver Island. Has about 110,000 miles on it, and does not run. Kind of suspect it might be the same cause as the '08 I have currently...they cut the wrong wires, taking out a remote start option. Kind of grubby, but it would clean up. Does have the rear seat in it, though.
I bid about the same money I got as a settlement for the '96 being wrecked in Utah, so if I win the bid, it amounts to a "new truck for old" deal. Will find out in a week; that's how long these sealed-bid sales run. In other Suburban news, today I more or less officially "retired" the wounded '96. Replaced the alternator I had borrowed out of it, fired it up one more time, and moved it to a different spot on my lot, and took the batteries out of it, and put them in the old war-wagon '88 Suburban, which fired up instantly, after having sat all winter and Spring. May as well get some miles out of the old darling. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 18, 2016 01:15 AM (HCEgT) 411

My comment for the night. Long, but pithy:
♦ Blond on Blond is 50 years old. ♦ WD: ...Women can do anything men can do... it's the rare Troglodyte who thinks they can't. Rare troglodytes: Christopher Taylor #17: Bullcrap... Women CANNOT do anything men can do. CAN NOT.... WOPR #20: ...They can't. Just as men can't do anything women can do.... I'm sure this was all beaten to death in comments past #20, but I'll chime in anyway with my 2¢. Yeah, I kinda concur with these trogs, as a general rule, but it does remind me of two things: 2. Ginger did everything Fred did, backward and in high heels. Not absolutely true (see for example Fred's firecracker routine or drum solo dance) but still kinda funny. 1. My computer guru, from back in the early '80s / TRS-80 days, was fond of saying, any computer can do anything any other computer can do... it just takes longer. Again, not absolutely true, but... ...in that vein, given the right equalizers, women really can do just about anything men can do. Reproductive functions aside. ♦ My shoulder was hurting lately but getting better. Then, a little while ago, I slipped on a wet floor and, going down hard, wrenched it and skinned my knee. Milady brought me some healing ointment for the knee, but it must've been old because the plastic bottle just cracked open and spewed contents all over the desk. So... I can take a hint... I'm going to bed. Posted by: mindful webworker - it's only pain... only pain... at May 18, 2016 01:41 AM (CJRaf) 414
ncj, that's quite interesting. Weren't the Tomahawks in box launchers, as on the Iowa-class?
Come to think of it, ASROCs were in their own box launchers, at least on some classes, going way back. In any case, the cruise-missile task was not the only one the Spruance class could be used for, I assume. It didn't exist when they were designed, I think. The economics of older systems are often very bad for unseen or mundane reasons, it seems. I think the $$$ considerations behind many retirements are paramount. Mike Hammer, if you're still around - don't you just hate stopping to "just look" at a counter in a gun store or pawn shop? I mean, hate it.
My indoor range has a S ampersand W Model 10-2 snub in nickel, in 95% cosmetic condition and seeming perfect mechanical condition, for a decent price (almost certainly a slightly low price, for CA - land of the handgun roster, where out-of-production collectible/uncommon models command an additional premium). Already have some nice snubs (also uncommon, desirable ones). I am olympian in my tenacious resistance to b.s. and crap in the rest of real life, yet seem to have the backbone of a GOP Senator when it comes to flim-flamming *myself* about why I need to buy a gun I don't need ..... And speaking of Spruance, just reading the Turkey Shoot part of Ian Toll's "Conquering Tide" on the Pacific War.
Have to say Nimitz and Spruance both had management/command styles I consider perfect, as well as simply admirable (no! no muldooning intended, honest). Delegate, find and trust/promote/empower good subordinates, tolerate no b.s. between subordinates. Not to mention stay calm, decide things quickly, and leave for long hikes in the midst of a crisis, after you've done your thing. Posted by: rhomboid at May 18, 2016 01:50 AM (QDnY+) 418

Yep, that's a difference between national socialism and the global variety. The Nazis wanted to spread socialism throughout the world, but with themselves at the helm. The garden variety socialist dreams of a global government without nations. The differing strategies require different tactics.
The garden variety Socialists still envision themselves at the helm, or at least a seat at the table. Posted by: Hollowpoint at May 18, 2016 02:25 AM (KRwzj) 422
I admit one of my all-time fave 'original soundtrack' songs is Ray Parker Jr.'s Ghostbusters theme. "Who ya gonna call?" ;-)
I always found Parker himself a little skeevy though. He had a hit song earlier in the 1980s that was about him cheating on his wife, "The Other Woman." He was kind of a morally loose Lionel Richie. The Venezuela story was depressing.
It's easy to say they brought it upon themselves, but many of them didn't vote for that shit. Even among those that did, their only sin was to buy into the appealing lie of Free Shit. So many of them were desperately poor that a bit of short term gain must have sounded a wonderful proposition. Now that the Devil has inevitably demanded his due, people are suffering and dying- those who saw what was coming and those who didn't alike. We need to frame this less as with retributory "I told you so, fuckers" and more with compassionate "we have a better way that will help". Of course, that won't happen. You have to let it know it is in trouble, which trouble, and that there are consequences -- you need not cripple the pooch to fully explore those consequences, but you need to put enough adrenaline into the system to ensure they are memorable ones. Socialists are all in denial about harsh words against socialism; they haven't fully appreciated that their current pain is an inevitable result of their past policies; and they think they can skate. That only works if you catch them in the act. Even then you shouldn't hold a grudge, and offer praise when they poop outside. Otherwise they view it as anger towards the end result and not the cause. Rubbing their noses in it after the fact only reminds them of the aftermath, not the cause of the smell. Victims of Socialism don't need to be told that there's a pile of shit on the carpet. Though it doesn't come right out and say it, there is a strong inference that you shouldn't characterize people on your side as "monkeys". If we're using your terms, you can assume that I'm on "Team Monkey" with the nice folks doing business on Walsh, rather than "Team Asshole" with.....er.....you.....in secret.....while your wife is working and can't see what an asshole you are. I was on the Enterprise when we converted over to the F-14 and retired out venerable old F-4s (we were the first ship to get them in the fleet). Yes, the Tomcat was vastly superior to the F-4 in all categories. But it had one initial drawback, it was also vastly more costly than the F-4. Later on it as it aged (I was out by then) it became a hanger queen and extremely costly to maintain. But it was replaced by the "compromise" all things are possible F-18 which is nowhere near as good.
The F-35 if it ever gets in production promises to be the same type of failure. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 18, 2016 03:56 AM (vvmPQ) 456

One of the scariest experiences I ever had was on I-5 driving from Escondido to San Diego. I didn't know it was scary at the time, though.
I was stopped by a county sheriff's deputy. Back then I was a pretty cute trick and I was alone on the road. He pulled me over and asked where I was going. I told him I was on the way to catch a flight out and was expected to stop to say "good-bye" to friends. I was baffled when he wished me a good day and returned to his car. Three years later I was watching 60 minutes when they ran a story about a California sheriff's deputy who was stopping, kidnapping, raping and killing women on I-5. When they showed his picture I recognized the deputy who had pulled me over. My hand are shaking as I type this. Posted by: creeper at May 18, 2016 04:55 AM (5RW7F) 482

Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, May 18, 2016. On this day in 1933 signed into law his unconstitutional law creating the Tennessee Valley Authority. What is little known is that this government agency started out by commandeering private utilities' projects that were already in progress. FDR had been fighting private utilities since 1928 calling them an evil monopoly. Of course after he was through they were all still a monopoly because that was really the only way to do it. They were just under his thumb then instead of the individual States. Amongst all of this chicanery by FDR it was not noticed that nothing in the US Constitution gave the federal government the authority to own, or even regulate, State public utilities. NDH, I haven't read the Senate report, but I could see claiming free ads as an expense. It might even be required to list the ads this way as a matter of accounting principle, though their would be an offset somewhere else in their statements, so that the revenue and expense would offset each other. The donation of ad time has to be reflected somehow and somewhere.

The SCOAMF administration says "it is simple fact" that women are men and men are women. It is explicitly threatening to sue anyone (and already is suing North Carolina) who disagrees with these "simple facts". This is horrible on its face, but is also a lot more dangerous than simply requiring states to let pedophiles into girls swim team locker rooms.

"You can keep claiming there was no other choice. I will keep believing it was an atrocious waste of resources." Keep claiming?? I was making a point that military equipment costs to warehouse and maintain. As new equipment is being swapped out, why would you continue having older, inferior stuff around that will not have a resupply chain much longer? The reason you mothball in the first place is for replacemet parts for active equipment still in use (Eg. B52s, Bell Huey, etc..). As others noted-- mission first. However I noticed alot of non-essential equipment being burned or shoved into pits in Iraq simply because the officers did not want it on the hand receipts as they would have been personnaly liable for any equipment that did not make it back. @594 That tear-jerkin' "Paradise" by John Prine? (Mr Peabody's coal train has hauled it away...)
It wasn't Peabody. It was the TVA that took down that town. To build the world's biggest coal-fired power plant. Little things ol' John left out of the song. Now, Peabody is bankrupt (and in Australia to boot) and TVA is still, um, with us. When my dad was a kid, they were selling the idea of TVA as the Feds taking over "just one industry" and using the profits to run everything else. He says with all the grand schemes being floated at the time (mid-30's) it didn't seem that crazy. Utah Phillips said he had a job once with the Rural Electrification Agency, installing power feeds to the only buildings in Indian territory that were up to code, that being the community latrines. That's right, he was the first man ever to wire a head for a reservation. Posted by: Stringer Davis at May 18, 2016 07:48 AM (tIja6) 612
