Personally, I loved the Tomcat, but I've heard that there were growing logistics problems with keeping them in service. I also had no idea that we sank all of our Spruance-class destroyers. It seems beyond stupid to me, why not keep them in mothballs somewhere? Yes, I know that's an expense, but you can't tell me that maintaining these ships in a reserve fleet would cost more than building just 1 new one from scratch. Until they are completely antiquated, if the ball goes up, they'd be a lot better than no ships at all, particularly if the U.S. Navy suffered sudden loses at the outset of a war. They could be back in service in a fraction of the time it takes to build new ships.

There is a lot of hatred directed towards the new trailer, primarily because it stars four women (though the haters would have you believe misogyny is not the real driving force behind their invective) and seemingly not at all connected to its quality.

This is, bluntly, bullshit. Mysogyny has nothing to do with it. Women can do anything men can do (even pee standing up), and SJWs aside, it's the rare Troglodyte who thinks they can't. No, the problem with the new film is that it has no other reason to exist except “Grrlz!”. Ghostbusters was one of the greatest films of all time, thanks in no small part to smart writing and the chemistry between the stars. Naturally people are going to dislike ruining that just to push a social agenda. I can think of lots of ways an all girls Ghostbusters could be made (how about...The GB have started selling franchises, and these girls pool their money to start one? You could even have Murray, Aykroyd or Hudson cameo at their grand opening.). That movie I would watch. This one? Not so much.

61 Got to see government in action today - I went to a State Highway meeting about proposed road changes that affect a piece of commercial property my parents own. There has been talk about improving the road for twelve years now and the earliest any improvements could be done would be 2020. And we're talking about just a half-mile stretch of road leading up to a major intersection. And to top it off, nobody from the county was there to explain what the county envisions for the road and the area. The county wants to turn it into a quaint ersatz 'Main Street', the state wants to move traffic through the intersection, and the property owners don't want their parking taken away by road improvements. I don't think anybody is going to be happy when all is said and done.

You're making the classic mistake of ceding the rhetorical grounds to the enemy.

"I can do anything a man can do!"

It moves the argument back to the reality based playing field, and that's where we win on the merits. Don't try to argue their non-specific, view from 10,000 feet attempt to shape the narrative. bad news WeirdDave- Akyrod, Murray and Hudson along with Weaver and Potts are all listed in the IMDB credits of this Ghostbusters remake.
The preview does look bad, and I for one am not going to see it in the theater. Maybe Netflix it somewhere down the road.

There were. It was a hell of a jet, but also hell on maintainers. A ridiculous ratio of maintenance hours to flight hours.

I got into a debate with a guy over the Bible treating men and women differently with regards to roles in the church. I simply pointed out.

1. Men and women are not the same biologically (bearing young, organs, etc.)
2. Physical differences also lead to psychological difference.
3. Different does not mean different worth.
4. Exceptions do not disprove the rule. (The fact that some single woman can do something as well as the average man doesn't disprove points 1 and 2. People have survived falling from great heights. It doesn't mean I should jump off of a five story building.)

He politely agreed to my logic and then went away commenting that it still wasn't right.

There are several different versions of color-blindness. I tend to mix up red/green for example. I met a guy who could not see yellow marker on a white-board. Anyway, color-blindness is not all the same thing, and it's definitely not all "inability to see color".

In hindsight, the YF-23 would have been a much better choice than the -22. Much more adaptable airframe layout.

Also, it's OK that the sexes have different abilities. I think women and men should embrace who they are. If you're a woman, do what you can, and if you need help with something physical, ask. It was also much less refined to production standard than the F-22. The proto F-22 you saw looks almost exactly like the model produced. MD/Northrop were still making refinements to the YF-23 and the Air Force didn't err on them making them.

I remember when they just opened the I-15 thing through the Virgin River Gorge. My parents were so thrilled -- we were driving to Colorado to visit the grandfather regularly, and the old road was this huge loop around through an Indian Reservation. (Sort of like AZ-389.)

Well, last Fall I was homeward-bound from AZ to Alberta, and stayed at Mesquite for the night. It was a long weekend, and traffic had been fierce on the I-15. Was being warned of several-hour delays on I-15 northbound through the gorge. The sweet old lady desk clerk at the casino there told me about the alternate route, so I took that. Never had to stop until I hit traffic lights in St. George, UT.

If you would like me to concede that there were soldiers fighting at the start of WWII who were too young to have voted for FDR, I so concede. But, "The Greatest Generation" describes many, many more people than those who were 18 in 1942.

If we generalize, it is accurate to say that the person who was the president during and of the greatest generation was FDR. Especially since FDR was also reelected in 1944.

It's not a theory, and if I was at home I could give you links. The replacement of the family with the state has always been an intregal part of the Marxist blueprint for Utopia. They've always grudgingly admitted if not exactly advertised that fact. Engels was big on the concept, Marx dialed it way back in their published works on the theory that the world wasn't ready for it yet, social attitudes would have to be manipulated and changed before they could be more open about their intentions. He was right, but we're almost there, and the process is accelerating....

Something we can agree on! Almost, anyway. I'm no expert on the names of generations, but Wikipedia claims that the term "lost generation" is used to describe those that came of age during the first world war. It looks like they use the term Silent Generation to describe the group you are talking about.

But that aside...

Having WWII veteran's status was a big help politically. Someone born during the war just didn't have the gravitas of someone who fought in it. By the time that the counter culture was politically dominant, the silents were too old and instead it was the boomers like Clinton (*spit*) who started getting elected.

Tomcat 21 and ASF Tomcat were concepts that were truly mouth watering in capability without significantly altering the airframe. Pilot and RIO would have had configurable glass cockpits, built-in LANTIRN, full smart weapons capability while keeping the ability to fire missiles or gun. The glove vanes would have been deleted and additional fuel on top of the current 16,100lbs would have been carried there.

But again, Grumman was not positioned with the right political clout. So we will never know if those versions of the Tomcat would have been game changers.

410 Well, wish me luck. Just put in a bid on a 2009 ex-RCMP Suburban situated on Vancouver Island. Has about 110,000 miles on it, and does not run. Kind of suspect it might be the same cause as the '08 I have currently...they cut the wrong wires, taking out a remote start option. Kind of grubby, but it would clean up. Does have the rear seat in it, though.

I bid about the same money I got as a settlement for the '96 being wrecked in Utah, so if I win the bid, it amounts to a "new truck for old" deal. Will find out in a week; that's how long these sealed-bid sales run.

In other Suburban news, today I more or less officially "retired" the wounded '96. Replaced the alternator I had borrowed out of it, fired it up one more time, and moved it to a different spot on my lot, and took the batteries out of it, and put them in the old war-wagon '88 Suburban, which fired up instantly, after having sat all winter and Spring. May as well get some miles out of the old darling.

In any case, the cruise-missile task was not the only one the Spruance class could be used for, I assume. It didn't exist when they were designed, I think.

The economics of older systems are often very bad for unseen or mundane reasons, it seems. I think the $$$ considerations behind many retirements are paramount.

455 I was on the Enterprise when we converted over to the F-14 and retired out venerable old F-4s (we were the first ship to get them in the fleet). Yes, the Tomcat was vastly superior to the F-4 in all categories. But it had one initial drawback, it was also vastly more costly than the F-4. Later on it as it aged (I was out by then) it became a hanger queen and extremely costly to maintain. But it was replaced by the "compromise" all things are possible F-18 which is nowhere near as good.

The F-35 if it ever gets in production promises to be the same type of failure.

The country has been shifting from State control to centralized Washington control since Adams took office. He was a big advocate of big government when he attended the Constitutional convention but he was thwarted by the VA delegates. Once he was President he immediately began actions to put it the way he wanted it.

And succeeding congresses and Presidents have continued to move in that direction. The uncivil war officially ended the Republican form of government where the States had any power.

481 One of the scariest experiences I ever had was on I-5 driving from Escondido to San Diego. I didn't know it was scary at the time, though.

I was stopped by a county sheriff's deputy. Back then I was a pretty cute trick and I was alone on the road. He pulled me over and asked where I was going. I told him I was on the way to catch a flight out and was expected to stop to say "good-bye" to friends. I was baffled when he wished me a good day and returned to his car.

Three years later I was watching 60 minutes when they ran a story about a California sheriff's deputy who was stopping, kidnapping, raping and killing women on I-5. When they showed his picture I recognized the deputy who had pulled me over.

My hand are shaking as I type this.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, May 18, 2016. On this day in 1933 signed into law his unconstitutional law creating the Tennessee Valley Authority. What is little known is that this government agency started out by commandeering private utilities' projects that were already in progress. FDR had been fighting private utilities since 1928 calling them an evil monopoly. Of course after he was through they were all still a monopoly because that was really the only way to do it. They were just under his thumb then instead of the individual States. Amongst all of this chicanery by FDR it was not noticed that nothing in the US Constitution gave the federal government the authority to own, or even regulate, State public utilities.

There was an MP in my platoon, good guy from Georgia, who went to check out the firing range one night. Got out to take a wizz, got back in and drove back down the road. He told his partner to stop and go back. They dismounted and began searching the adjoining woods next to the range. Found a naked a woman with a rope around her neck and barely conscious. She told them a guy raped her and was strangling her when they pulled up and scared him off.

I asked him later what made him realize there was something happening he said he didn't know. He just had a bad feeling as they were driving down the road. A BOLA went out and they caught the guy the next day.

Angels indeed.

Keep claiming?? I was making a point that military equipment costs to warehouse and maintain. As new equipment is being swapped out, why would you continue having older, inferior stuff around that will not have a resupply chain much longer? The reason you mothball in the first place is for replacemet parts for active equipment still in use (Eg. B52s, Bell Huey, etc..).

As others noted-- mission first.

However I noticed alot of non-essential equipment being burned or shoved into pits in Iraq simply because the officers did not want it on the hand receipts as they would have been personnaly liable for any equipment that did not make it back.
