Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Misanthropic Humanitarian]

z pet thread cover 2.jpg

Your humble Open Blogger has had dogs over half of his life. One thing I've never done is take any of my dogs to a pet park. Have you morons taken your pet to a pet park? If you have, what has been your experience? What do you like about the park(s)? What don't you like? Should I take the knuckle head to one?

So how many of you have fenced in yards? Did this ever happen to you?

What's new and exciting in the world of animals? Let's find out.

Meet the pets

Our first pet today is a Italian Mastiff that goes by the name of Jane. Lincolnf is the owner of this big baby.

zz Lincolnf Jane.jpg

Meet Gus. Gus doesn't care to wear bowties. Even Carlson Tucker has abandoned the bowtie. Thank you Cricket for sharing this photo. Wonderful looking cat.

zz cricket gus.jpg

Mst3K sent in this photo of Spuds. Spuds is a feral cat that visits every night for dinner.

zz mst3k.jpg

Buddha sent in this photo. There wasn't much information given except that this cat is known as CD the Cat.

zz buddha CD the Cat.jpg

Retired Spook submitted this photo of Molly. Molly was abandoned. She was found at approximately 6 months of age. She looks like she has had a wonderful life.

20 My friend is worried about her cat. The cat's brother just died of some liver disease and now this one is not eating. She thought that he might have something genetic between siblings, but his bloodwork came back o.k. I said maybe he's not eating because he's mourning his sibling. That's quite possible, isn't it?

I told her to think about getting a kitten. Adult cats usually respond better to a kitten than a new full grown cat as long as you introduce them slowly.

30 Perhaps the Mountain Lion on the porch wasn't well.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 21, 2016 03:06 PM (w4NZ8)

31 My dogs like running around the dog park, but they're snobs. They only play with other shelties, and nothing else.

Dog parks depend on the park. Some are well kept up and the people who go there watch their dogs, prevent their own from misbehaving, and clean up after them. Some are filled with idiots who think that their pitbull pinning a dog down and tearing at their throat is "fluffy being playful". Or morons who bring toddlers to the dog area, who then either have food (bad idea) or run around drawing attention (worse idea) , and get bit.

TL;DR it depends.

64 Doggie Park?

Just saying it out loud brings out the puppies in my doggehs. When we get there, after much whining in the car for not getting there fast enough, they burst out of the vehicle, head straight for the first tree to mark, and then run headlong into the first doggeh they see. Once in a while they look back at me as if to say, "You still here?"

Yes, we do the doggie park, as often as possible, in good weather and bad, mostly without leashes, and we stay until they are well and truly worn out. Good for everyone.

65 And all cute pix today. CD's does look like a professional portrait!

Well, I'm off to clean the koi tank. The algae is pretty bad b/c the tank is right in front of an uncurtained eastern window and gets full direct sun all morning. The murk will get better as the sun shifts around, I think (hope). There is just no better place for a 40 gal tank with matching console. So a complete clean today and more frequent water changes for a while, I guess.

Earl the Koi will have to spend some quality time in a bucket, but then his digs will be sparkly clean. Maybe I'll take a picture. :-)

81 I was watching my son's Mastiff for 8 days or so while they were vacationing, and man, what a chore that was. If it was only that dog, it would have been fine, but I also had my german shephard. Talk about dominance wars. Sheesh. It was a constant battle. The Mastiff is a sweet dog, very cuddly, if you can call a 150 lb dog cuddly. Everytime he wanted some pets, my shepard decided she wanted some action too and I damn well better give her an equal share. My son picked up his dog now though, and the queen has her kingdom back and all is well...

With the shipping, it's considerably more expensive than the coffee I can buy at the supermarket. But it's good, and this sounds like a company that is worth supporting, in contrast to all the companies to boycott that we were discussing the other day.

One bag will last me for almost a month, so the extra expense isn't a big deal.

She was a rescue, and always ended up playing second fiddle to our other mutts. Even so she could assert herself when she wanted to.
She was gentle and patient and had a way of looking at me that told me I was the center of her universe.
She was just a fat old lazy dog. Nothing special to anyone else but my wife and me.
But there's a hole in our hearts today.

Sorry for your loss Van Owen.

104 wacky pet stories. We had a Mastiff sized mutt that liked to chase the laser pointer dot. It was pretty fun watching that 110 lb dog pouncing at the red dot.

But there's a hole in our hearts today.

She was yours. That is enough.

Posted by: Vendette at May 21, 2016 04:24 PM (jOi+y)

106 Thanks Vendette and Last. Last, no they still don't know what it is but hope to find out more on the followup. They may do more ECG and ultrasound.

Also, part of her suite of afflictions was a UTI,and we thought that was gone when her fever went down after all the antibiotics, but now all of sudden as she's feeling MUCH better, she's losing bladder control. So that's fun. The washer and dryer are getting a workout. Anyway, maybe we can get some it sorted out next week.

Pirate, RIP

109 Okay, time for a cute dog story. The other day we were on the road for work, leaving the house earlier than usual. I asked Buckley to go get his little stuffed elephant, but he was too keyed up and didn't want to play. I had no idea where the elephant was. We went off to work, leaving him alone at home.

When we got back home 8 hours later, I walked in the living room, and there, sitting on my recliner, was the little stuffed elephant. Some time after we left Buckley had taken it upon himself to bring the toy and leave it as a gift for me on my chair.

Thanks, Bruce. That's Pirate on the left. We were never sure of her mix of breeds, but probably mostly border collie. She was a handsome dog.

111 Anyone know how Mike Hammer's dog is doing? he was having big problems a week or two ago, and I haven't been on the threads much this week.
---------
Thanks for asking.

Much, MUCH better. I have no illusions about the dog being anything other than a dog. I do not attribute to her the same qualities that I do a human, and my psychological commitment is not what it would be to a human family member.

Having said that, she has been a constant, uncomplaining, and loyal companion for years. She is as gentle and sweet an animal as you can imagine, and loves children.

I will not go into details, but she was poisoned. It took a little while for me to figure out that things were not right. There ensued hours at the emergency Vet, calls exchanged with the poison control center. The prognosis was that she would either die within 48 hours... or survive.

There simply was nothing that the Vets could do, so I brought her home. What followed was a really shitty week.

I'm no stranger to the heart-wrenching experiences of days spent at hospitals or care facilities when a relative or friend is in a bad way, so I won't elevate this to that level. None the less, it was pretty bad.

Mrs. H is in Georgia looking after her aged mom, and so I was alone in dealing with this. The poor little creature was wracked with convulsions, high heartbeat, and elevated blood pressure. She was also hallucinating and was frightened out of her wits.

I don't think she slept at all for three days, and neither did I, at least not much, just a half hour now and then. Why she did not die of a heart attack, I do not know. It was horrible to watch, and be completely unable to help, or even provide comfort.

Finally, on the third day, she made a ginormous pee, and went to sleep. There followed a week of terrible diarrhea and lack of appetite.

Making up food of lean white chicken and rice, she gradually began to eat and bodily functions returned to normal. So, after two weeks, she seems back to normal. I would never have guessed that it was possible.

I've posted this picture before, but here it is again, couple of years ago at Christmas:

112 She's a cutie, Mike. Glad that she pulled through.

Posted by: That SOB Van Owen at May 21, 2016 04:42 PM (CAKDm)

113 That's quite possible, isn't it?

I told her to think about getting a kitten. Adult cats usually
respond better to a kitten than a new full grown cat as long as you
introduce them slowly.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 21, 2016 02:56 PM (w4NZ

very possible. cats grieve. i had one who lost not her sister but her best cat friend and she used to go sit where her sick friend would lay and stare morosely at the wall. she was super sad for about a six months. i did have other cats but she wanted her special pal she grew up with. Im not gonna lie. I also had one stop eating and die when he best friend died, but she was very old too, and had health issues. but she just faded away in about a week.

i have had foals die and the mare did go off her feed and mope. i had to move her to a new stall next to a freshly weaned baby to get her to perk up. when she made friends with the baby she went back to normal but she was miserable that first week.

i have had dogs be sad when their partner died, but i could comfort them, i had a hell of a time comforting that dog and that cat.

114 I have one sheltie who goes absolutely batshit if you pop bubble wrap. Like psychotic. She'll jump four feet off the ground to try and grab it from you, and if she gets it she shakes it like a rat. She gets this flat crazy look in her eyes every time.

And of course this taught all the others to bark if bubbles are popped.

It's been a rough day. We had to rush old Pirate to the vet last night.
Around midnight he called to tell us that she was gone. She has been a
part of my life for 13 years. Cherish your pets, fellow morons. We
lose them all too soon.

================================================

Late to the thread, but I read about your dog, Van Owen, and I hope that in time, the happiest of memories will be at the forefront of your mind, and the sad ones will start to lose their painfulness. I know you will never forget your friend - that's what makes it so hard. Like that old Garth Brooks song - "I could have missed the pain - but I'd have had to miss the dance."

Mike - I'm glad your little friend survived the poisoning incident. Sounds horrible. I remember sleeping on the bathroom floor for 3 nights straight with one of our dogs. The details were equally unpleasant, but she made it. What can you do?
