Differential Equations: The New Terrorism (CBD)

Dife05.png

As many of us already know, differential equations are designed to sow the seeds of fear in the hearts of all college freshmen.

Apparently it also scares idiotic and ignorant Chicken Littles who mistake mathematical symbols for Arabic letters in, presumably, a note describing some terrorist action.

Menzio told the paper he was troubled by the women's ignorance as well as "a security protocol that is too rigid -- in the sense the once the whistle is blown everything stops without checks -- and relies on the input of people who may be completely clueless."

5 Also... since traditionally females are a bit better at language type skills, and men are traditionally better at math and science, can we proclaim the math is racist?

Yes, I know gender is not race, but I put the Special Snowflake spin on my comment.

/also, minorities are not good at math either, so really, math is totally racist and should be outlawed!

46 Behold why economics lost much of its utility and power - far too much math, far too little real-world common sense (the basis of almost all economics of any use). I recall clearly when econ was becoming swamped by econometrics.

Dunno, but I doubt that, say (given the story here) airline deregulation was a good thing whose case needed to be made by econometric modeling. Yet the benefits were obvious and dramatic and transformative.

"Literary" economics is all that's ever been needed to explain and confirm the ideas most relevant to public policy.

There's just over 300 million people in the USA. The total was over 400 million. Even assuming a lot of Canadians etc got involved, that's still at least a dollar per American average spent on the idiot tax.

Only 60% goes out in the payoff... the rest goes to administration of the Lottery, and whatever that State sends its money to in lieu of actual Tax money...

The thing is, this isn't a complaint from the side of the winner; so what, you get 250 million instead of 400. The problem is that its a huge scheme for governments to get rich off people's gullibility, greed, and creduilty. They're voluntarily throwing money at the government.

I was just jerking your chain a tiny[/] bit. Alcoholics will drink, druggies will shoot up, problem gamblers will gamble, and there is really nothing we can do about it.

Here in Canada, Lotto 6/49 is the grand-daddy of the big government-controlled lottos. When the jackpot exceeds 7 million, I will generally buy a ticket, if the mood seizes me. One ticket. Even if the jackpot approaches 50 million, ONE ticket. Because more than one simply doubles the money wasted. One ticket buys me an non-zero, but extremely small chance at winning the jackpot. Puts me in the game. Two tickets, or ten tickets, or a hundred tickets would buy me a non-zero, but extremely small chance at winning the jackpot. Why waste my money?

Proceeds from the lotto go to things like culture and amateur sport, that might otherwise wind up being funded from tax revenue, so to some extent, what I "lose" by purchasing lottery tickets is balanced off by excess tax I don't pay. Theoretically, at least, heh!

And many of the people who pay the "stupid tax" by over-buying Lotto tickets are welfare recipients, so it's a case of the government getting its own money back. (Some of the people seen at a lottery outlet buying many tickets might be individuals buying tickets on behalf of a group of friends or co-workers. Quite few big prizes have been won by such groups.)

Incidentally, I know a couple who won six million dollars, back when six million was a record-breaking prize payout. Lovely couple, and they did not pi$$ it all away.

As I understand it, that's a rarity. Like young people who get a huge sports contract, they don't have a real grasp on how to handle money, how taxes work, what an annuity is, or any principles of growing your fortune rather than just blasting through it.

I don't know how I'd do with a sudden influx of cash like that. I do know how long I can make a few hundred dollars last right now, but at the same time I blow through some of it buying meals and various oddities like adding to the James Bond collection. Lottery winning are treated as ordinary income. Capital gains would actually be better since the tax rate is lower. And there is no FICA tax (SS/Medicare) on lottery winnings either. But as I understand it, that is an additional tax rate, over and above income tax. As in, if you go over a certain level of earnings in a certain time period, you are subject to additional layers of taxation, not replacement.

So what you are saying, then, is that there is no additional taxation rate or increased taxation that kicks in when you earn over a certain level of money in a short time period?

So once you reach that top income tax rate whether you earn $500,000 a year or $600,000,000 it all taxed exactly the same?

The argument for it has no specifics regarding what will be done with the money except to leverage more funding from the State.

The argument against it is this scheme is bullshit, there is no list of exactly how the goals will be reached, and the most likely outcome will be hack jobs for hacks in new hack offices.

OTOH... considering the lottery in a risk neutral light, anytime the payoff amount is larger that the odds against, the expected value of the ticket is larger than the dollar the ticket costs and therefore worth purchasing (for a two dollar ticket, the payoff amount would have to be more than twice the odds against).

Those "pitiful sad cases" you cited really aren't caused by gambling; they are evidence of people who have lost their bearings for one reason or another. They have begun making irrational decisions.

Used to be a fairly common thing. Embezzlers, thinking that they were about to be caught, would jet down to Las Vegas, and try to win back all the money the stole, so they could "pay it back" and evade detection. Yeah, it really has happened.

I've lost apple and plum trees about four or five years after planting them, though they looked fine for the first couple of years. I don't think it was the area as much as my yard. The neighbor had an apple that lived for decades. We also had great success with pears and crabapples. I had an infestation of slugs in the soil around the base of one of trees I lost, but was told they shouldn't have bothered it. I'll never know why they died.

If you like pears try one - they are nice but some are prone to a black soot. Since you live far enough south to grow peaches you might also want to try one of the many varieties. When I had a yard it was just a little far north for them, which was too bad because they are so good fresh off the tree.

Actually, math doesn't say that, as Redbanzai pointed out. If the prize becomes big enough, the value "E" (meaning expected gain), exceeds unity.

A rational person thinks: "Well, there is a gambling game, with a huge prize, a prize so huge, I could buy a private island, and stock it with Mary Anns and Gingers. If I buy a ticket, there is a minute, but non-zero probability of winning, and the cost is trivial to me. If I don't buy a ticket, my chance of winning is precisely zero."

325 Buying 1 lotto ticket....meh, whatever, $1 for a dream. Meh, whatever.

The real dumb part is buying the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ticket.

You need to buy a ticket in order to have a change at winning. No ticket = 0% chance to win, 1 ticket = greater than 0% chance to win.

But buying the 2nd ticket takes your odds from 0.00000001 to 0.000000002 which is really nor worth the extra $1.

Posted by: Monsieur Moo Moo at May 08, 2016 03:03 PM (0LHZx)

326 The problem with much lottery logic is it presumes the utility value of a marginal dollar to be equal for all purposes. Similar to the hoped-for return on that dollar. But no player does math on that. They see a dollar in their pocket that is discretionary and they perceive much greater change in their lifestyle (return on "investment") and they buy. Psychology, not math.

335 My experience with fruit trees is limited, but I've had 4 apple trees and 3 pears. I heard 30 - 35 years is a good life. But I've climbed cherry trees for fruit - trees that looked 70+ yrs old.

I've been here since '88 - they were all large & producing then. Don't know how long ago they were planted, but my guess is over 50 yrs.
Three of the apples are gone now, and the last is so bad, I'll be taking it down this month. Pears are still going strong, but birds and squirells get most before I can.

FWIW, I'm quite a bit north of Vic (Norfolk), and grew up eating peaches & plums off trees in my childhood backyard.

These arguments could be made about any form of entertainment. Depends on the psychology of the player. If the odds were eleventh trillion to one, probably one would play. For some people $2 is not that much more than $1 and they've doubled their chances. Still the same buy as $1. Again, psychology and the marginal value of a dollar to any given individual realtive to their perception of how greatly their life would change if they win.

Naked and Famous

Ingredients
3/4 ounce mezcal
3/4 ounce Aperol
3/4 ounce Yellow Chartreuse
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
Directions:

408 little shining man,

Are you using this:

http://granmitla.us

when you drink mezcal?

It's basically ground worm, salt, chilies.

Adds a new flava dimension...heavy on the umami side of things.

You can use it on the rim of the glass or on orange slices between sips.

I've been tempted to use the worm salt on some ribs as a rub for an experiment-

so far the beautiful and sensible Mrs naturalfake has forbidden this excursion into gastronomic excellence.

It's fine... but my suggestion at 374 will provide more insight and understanding than plunging into individual projects via Sparkfun. That's just my opinion.

415 If buying $4 vs $1 meant the jackpot was 4X higher,
then it would be worth it, because the dream would be better with 4X the
jackpot. But since the dream is the same, it's wasted $3.

For you perhaps Moo... obviously not for other people who place a different utility value on the extra $3 spent.

Posted by: James T Kirk at May 08, 2016 07:05 PM (e8kgV)

420 I like the post but what equation is that? It isn't a differential equation. Sure, there's a derivative in it but it's just a straightforward integration of a bunch of free variables(?) with useless superscripts and subscripts..

Couldn't you just open a diff equ book and grab a real one? They're much neater than what you have.

421 I don't know - seems like the lady took appropriate action.
She sees some introverted, angry looking, and disheveled (perfect description of typical leftist prof) middle eastern looking guy with a little checkered rag wrapped around his neck (see picture) scribbling gibberish (handwritten, not computer notation) in a dog-eared note pad. She thinks, "Geez could be a freakin' terrorist - I'm calling it". I say, Good job lady! Thanks! Screw the leftist prof's feelings.

There is a definite lack of clear reasoning infecting this place as of late.

Posted by: jacke at May 08, 2016 08:36 PM (i8Shl)

422 I agree with Jacke. The Left is absolutely dogpiling this poor woman, who was obviously untutored in calculus. We join them at our peril, which will doubtless cause the next witness to an actual budding terror plot to decide discretion is the better part of valor and clam up, leading to something like San Bernardino (which itself had a witness who didn't come forward because she didn't want to be racist).

No. They're hindu, really. They were transmitted by the muslims and we used to call them hindu-arabic, but now the name has weirdly changed to just arabic - which is a lot of bullshit.

430 ...differential equations are designed to sow the seeds of fear in the hearts of all college freshmen.

If that is what they're designed for, they fail miserably, since most college freshmen (or college graduates, for that matter) never encounter them.
