19 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spent $100,000 renovating the suite not only of director Sarah Saldana, but also her assistants office, according to an internal document obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.

In response to a query submitted by a Senate Committee on Appropriations staffer regarding the cost of office renovation, ICE confirmed that it had modified the directors suite to improve the workflow and usable desk space.

20 FDA takes significant steps to protect Americans from dangers of tobacco through new regulation

That should be reworded to say FDA issues a new raft of illegal pen and phone regulations that will cost millions and do nothing. And e-cigarettes are not "tobacco based".

21 Good morning all!

From this week in 1944- Anzio

The EZ Dog Journal

May 5, 1944
This is one of those cold cloudy days that makes one wonder if spring is here or not. It has been fairly quiet though - so I don't much mind.

May 6, 1944
After working all night I felt I'd like to sleep up stairs for a change. Capt Evans has a room on the third floor so I went up. The little old lady who owns the house saw me and started raising "Cain". After I assured her by my best sign language that all I wanted to do was sleep - she became quite motherly - even to the extent of finding a mattress for me.
Gerry was a bit promiscuous with his artillery early this morning. The 35 Gp was hit pretty hard. One man killed, another wounded from a direct hit on a fox hole.

29 At about 10 p.m. on April 16 near 60th Street West and Grand Avenue,
investigators say Braukmann was driving with three children in the car
when a trooper pulled her over. Braukmann had an open bottle of vodka in
the car and abreathalyzer test registered her blood alcohol content at
0.247 percent, more than three times the legal limit, according to
documents.

36 The article on the mothballed nuke plant shows what is wrong with the country. Their study says they don't need any more base power for the next 20 years.

If we wanted to get to full employment and have rising wages, we would be building 500 identical nuke plants across the country to provide as much electrical energy as needed for free.

No need to go to India and China for steel, aluminum, copper, concrete and a thousand other products that require large amounts of energy to produce. New products and processes would be developed that we can't even imagine if we had nearly-free unlimited power.

Want to help seniors but can't afford a rise in Social Security? Want to help low income people and middle class workers? Give them nearly-free power for heating/air conditioning and everything else.

Let private industry do the distribution through existing utilities, but let the federal government supply base power to the grid.

With 500 plants spread out over the country, the risk of being knocked out by some man-made or terrorist action is reduced to nothing. We'll always have power.

If it was anything other than nuclear power, I wouldn't want the government anywhere near it. However, they are the only ones that can eliminate all the costs associated with licensing, liability, siting, lawsuits and security.

This is more than economic. It's a national security issue.

62 Ticking Time Bomb TL;DR

Did they conclude that losing one's temper makes you a danger to society?

Everyone gets angry at something. Most everyone understands the line between losing one's temper and doing violent deeds, and only a few cross that line.

Some of the events of the day should make you angry.
Look at the SJW, leftists in general who are all angry at something. This test isn't for them because their anger is righteous anger.

This test is for the white male christian patriarchy because their anger is oppression of the minority, i.e. directed against the left who are trying to self righteously destroy western civilization.

Why are you so angry, bro?

RR dumping the mental institutions is a pure outright lie generated by liberals. The mental institutions were "dumped" so to speak by a class action civil suit brought forth by the liberals in the ACLU.

As for Rhodes' foreign policy skills -- or the lack thereof -- Ace of Spades has you more than covered, as he fisks wide swatches of the article, including this passage:

His lack of conventional real-world experience of the kind that normally precedes responsibility for the fate of nations -- like military or diplomatic service, or even a master's degree in international relations, rather than creative writing -- is still startling.

A young lamb had been beheaded. The head taken. The body found was bloodless.

"We're baffled!", said Constable Oompapa.

Into the room strode naturalfake smoking his trademark meerschaum pipe.

"naturalfake! Thank God, you're here. We're baffled by this horrible mystery!"

"Yeah, I know." said naturalfake "Big fucking mystery, you Austrian nimrods."

He pointed an accusing finger, "Bloodless body means halal meat. Lamb's head is an Arabian delicacy. Stolen lamb means a cheap s.o.b. with no social or psychological connection to Austrian ways or laws."

"It was the muslim! It was you, Mohammed "Penny Pincher" Mohammed."

"Gasp!" gasped Mohammed "Penny Rincher" Mohammed "By Allah's underwear! How did you know, naturalfake?"

"I just told you." said naturalfake.

"By the Prophet's nose hairs! I wasn't listening." said Mohammed "Penny Pincher" Mohammed.

"Well...then fuck you." said naturalfake "Take him away boys!"

"Uhhhhhhh...well....you see..." stammered the Constable "The accused is one of our fine muslim immigrants making our lives better here in Europe. I can't arrest him or I'll get fired."

"I see..." said naturalfake pensively smoking his meerschaum pipe,

"Welp. Then fuck all y'all. I'm out."

There are other examples but I just watched this:

This is clipped from the record of the 1946 campaign to check an epidemic of malaria in the Kipsigis tribal reserve in the Kisumu district of north-west Kenya by spraying village huts with DDT. A team of public health workers are sent into the rural areas to convince villagers that spraying their huts with DDT will help stop the disease. When the skeptical tribal headman, Arap Kipkoi, resists DDT as poisonous, the British officer has DDT sprayed on a bowl of porridge and then eats a mouthful to prove DDT is not dangerous to humans

I don't really know what the answer should have been. Most larger hospitals have a psych unit, but I believe they are generally for acute care, not chronic on-going conditions. It's very hard to get someone committed today if they do not want to be committed themselves. And it's very costly. Many insurance carriers including Medicare only re-imburse 50%, not 80/20.

The Republican presidential front-runner met privately with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus Thursday afternoon, and soon after, came out to the lobby of Trump Tower to declare that he has signed a loyalty pledge. Ryan will be eaten alive by TFG2, and he would be better off recognizing that fact quickly so he looks like less of an idiot.

The only way to have a third party is to start immediately after an election and get the two or three largest, already extant parties to band together as one and start a campaign to sign up and maintain a solid constituency.

The other option is to get a Sanders/Nader ticket to run independently as well.

The only way our third party wins is if their third party runs as well.

160 My grandmother worked in the cafeteria of a mental hospital. Let's just say it wasn't a good place to be. But the answer was not closing all of them down.
Posted by: grammie winger at May 06, 2016 08:41 AM (dFi94)

the piece I linked explains what happened (by also linking to another of it's own of the same topic):

Lucious blames Ronald Reagan for dumping the mentally ill onto the street. If he wanted to blame a president, he should have begun with JFK.

Here's the real story -- In 1963, President Kennedy proposed a program funded by the federal government that would provide community mental health centers ( CMHCs ) to take the place of state-run mental health hospitals during a speech entitled "Mental Illness and Mental Retardation." For about a century, care of the mentally ill had been the states' responsibility. Kennedy's program closed many hospitals over time, known as deinstitutionalization.

The problem with JFK's plan, though, was when the state-run facilities were closed in favor of community mental health centers, the toughest cases were often overlooked in favor of less severe problems accepted by community centers. Those in most need were not treated, as they had been in state hospitals.

Also ignored in the rush to blame Reagan are the major societal and legal changes in the 1970's relating to involuntary institutionalization. From the book and movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest to the Supreme Court cases O'Connor v. Donaldson and Addington v. Texas, the focus on patient rights, abuse, and the plight of the unjustly committed transformed public perception and law, leading to the release of thousands of patients right around the time Reagan was elected president.

When Ronald Reagan came into office as President, he decided to issue block grants to states and take it out of the federal government's hands and place it back with the states. That is completely in line with Republican principles -- when possible, services should be the responsibility of the states, not the federal government. When the federal government's role was lessened under President Reagan, liberals blamed him for a lack of funding for the mentally ill. Thus, the false claim that Reagan "dumped" mentally ill people out onto the streets.

So I echo "Cookie" and ask the writers of Empire, "Why did you lie?"

195 Good morning, Morons!

There are no new polls in the RCP mix today, so everything stays where they are with Clinton leading by an average of 6.5%, and Trump stuck at 40% support where he has been for 6 weeks now.

I thought I'd offer a little analysis of that CNN/ORC poll though. One of the fun things about polls is that you can use the crosstabs to find some interesting general trends. I used two of the question results and math to determine what is motivating voters in general right now. This is a very high level view and only applies to the results of this poll, but interesting none the less.

In the general election population right now, you see the following (in order of priority):

28% of the electorate hates Trump and is voting against him
26% of the electorate is voting for leftist ideals/socialism
23% of the electorate hates Clinton and is voting against her
18% of the electorate want a wall on the border
5% of the electorate doesn't know what to do

I believe this reinforces my argument from yesterday that in order to win, Trump needs to improve his positive perceptions. Driving up Hillary's negatives is not where the votes are. There are only about 5% of the voters who could potentially be persuaded to vote against Hillary still. However, there is over a quarter of the electorate that could be persuaded to stop being an "anti Trump" vote.

I looked into the crosstabs of that 28% and they aren't all minority voters. There is a large number of white voters in that block, but they are mostly college educated and not being persuaded by the "close the border" platform. They need something else to change their opinion.

Guy goes down and gets permission, after years of trying, to buy a Lada. Goes to the dealer, and pays in full.

"Congratulations, comrade," the clerk tells him, "Your car will be delivered here inexactly five years."

"Will it be in the morning or in the afternoon?" the guy asks.

"Why should that matter?" the clerk asks.

I thought you didn't give a f*ck if he won or lost.(your words). Why the change?

"No, this site is showing spine -- by resisting your attempts to bend spines for Trump."
Vote for him or not. Your vote. If you don't vote you've made yourself irrelevant to the process. Your choice. If you hate Trump so much, go vote for Hillary.

"I'm very, very reluctant to vote for someone who seems to think that America needs to become a Trumpmerica Inc."
We're getting far down the road to becoming a fascist state run for the interests of the Left and Big Business, and you think Trump will make that worse, that he's the problem? Pick a better bogeyman.

Ace calls it as he sees it.

Politics is fluid, and with Trump, new sh*t comes out of his mouth every day. New revelations, just like in any campaign, you can evolve on your thoughts of a candidate over time after they are more known to you.

If one keeps an open mind, one can evolve to new thinking.

I do not get the vitriol thrown at Ace because of this. It's an emotional ride, not just watching what is happening to the country, but to the parties, and picking a candidate is personal, yes, but it can also change.

I remember in '76 when Reagan brought the Libertarians into the R party. Young, idealistic, classical liberals with enough commonsense to find space within the R party to get some of their ideas some air and direction. I really think that their input gave the R party some life as they spiraled down into Rockefeller NYC types.

Bless their hearts (not ironically), they have managed to keep some organization and structure to offer some alternative to the corporatists. If enough new blood goes into that wild-eyed group, maybe they will pull their socks up again and work rather than the open-borders idiocy.

"Rule extending" = overreach"youth access to tobacco" = for the children!!
I've never smoked, but the way they've demonized and harassed smokers is ridiculous. Especially when they're also working hard to legalize pot.

Actually, the people who end up president aren't the ones who come up with the ideas.

That's not their job. There are smart people out there who conceive of the policies, game out the scenarios and fill in the fine print.

Then, it's up to a leader to make it happen.

A leader is someone who can put a vision across to a wide variety of people and get them to buy into it. They do this by being positive, self-assured and confident.

Also, a leader is someone that the people who work for him can count on. Great ideas, ideas that change a country and matter, aren't generated by people who are covering their ass. If you have a leader who has a record of throwing his people under a bus at the first twinge of trouble, nobody is going to go out on a limb.

You can have your weak wrist, even keeled, politically correct career politician. Give me the person with a proven record of accomplishing real things.

370 from the Camisle Paglia piece

In their focus on Trump's real-estate tycoon father, the media seem to have missed that the teetotaling Trump's deepest connection was probably to his strong-willed, religious mother. Born in the stark, wind-swept Hebrides Islands off the western coast of Scotland ( the next North Atlantic stop is Iceland ), she was one tough cookie. She and her parents were Gaelic speakers, products of a history extending back to the medieval Viking raids. I suddenly realized that that is Trump's style. He's not a tribal Highlander, celebrated in Scotland's long battle for independence from England, but a Viking, slashing, burning, and laughing at the carnage in his wake. ( Think Kirk Douglas flashing his steely smile in the 1958 Hollywood epic, The Vikings. ) Trump takes savage pleasure in winning for its own sake--an attribute that speaks directly to the moment, when a large part of the electorate feels that the U.S. has become timid and uncertain and made far too many humiliating concessions to authoritarian foreign powers like China, Saudi Arabia and Iran.

And check this out...he lists Alexis's birthday as January 1st, 1980. That would make Karr just 30 years old. But he's actually 45. It's a strange new turn for the man who became infamous after falsely confessing to killing JonBenét Ramsey.

Karr apparently started changing his sexual identity in 2006, taking female hormones. For a time, he put the sex change process on hold and got engaged to Brook Simmons.

Buy a soft serve ice cream place. Something that's only open from late spring to late fall. Use it expense everything you can, from your cars to your groceries. Keep as much of cash as possible and avoid depositing when you can.

Deposit your money when necessary, showing it coming out of your retirement savings, to pay ongoing bills of the business.

Nobody knows how he will conduct himself in office. But one thing is certain, he's not insane. He's actually damned smart and there is just as much likelihood that he will be a decent President as there is that he will be a disaster.

EXACTLY like everyone else who was in the original Republican field.

But any politician in the Republican Party who DOESN'T wildly overstate the problems of illegal immigration will not win the Republican primary, because that is what Republican voters evidently want to hear.

Remember, your going to lose money every year, regardless of how much you make.

Actually, this is also a business to put that 401k money into...

There isn't any national ban on phosphates. It was always an individual state thing. Also, it never touched dishwasher detergent in legislation. Only laundry detergent was named.

Proctor and Gamble didn't want the adverse publicity, the potential liability and the other crap, so they made the decision internally to stop selling the dishwasher detergent in the U.S.

Anyone who wants to can go to Mexico, find the distributor (or buy the stuff retail) and bring it back across the border to sell on EBay at a handsome premium.

If you're buying it at $5.50 a box you can easily sell it for $18 or $20.

You're not breaking any laws by buying it in Mexico, transporting it or selling it in the U.S.

Of course, don't forget to send me 10% for the advice.

Yet we don't have even a single symbol of immigration enforcement now, and acting like pitching the LIV voter on acting to enforce the law (which, at this late hour, has to begin with people actually realizing that it isn't being enforced, and then accepting that they DO want it enforced), is achievable in the modern media environment only with a concerted message with a simple, concrete hook.

And it's already working. It has worked enough to get this candidate to the nomination. This is the first thing that has worked on the national level for any conservative principle. If the person advancing this cause that we, the principled writerly right, have failed so abjectly on at every turn for decades to win with, is in fact more a liberal than a conservative, what does that say about the state of conservatism?

I do not care for the strictures and sacraments of True Conservatism. I want the border enforced so that I can live my life in the United States.

Wait, what? I don"t advocate the Donk model of border non-security or handing out driver's licenses to illegals.

I think we need vigorous border security. I'm fine with building a wall, but it is more symbolic than anything else, and it isn't going to even solve the major problems associated with illegal immigration, i.e., visa overstays.

What is The Donald's plan for dealing with visa overstays?
Posted by: chemjeff - Libertarian at May 06, 2016 10:09 AM (dpnZC)

________

OK. glad we are in agreement. 100% Seriously. The symbolism of the wall is key. Symbols mean A LOT. Its why the lefty's want to ban the AR - that weapon platform a right wing patriotic symbol. We like it an rally around it.

Ace talked about this tearing down of the enemy totems a year or two back. It works and we need to play that game too.

Trump has talked about a deportation force which would address the overstays. We again agree that overstays are a big problem.

However, what we have defacto from both Reps & Dems is what you call the Donk immigration model. It. Has. To. Stop. Or else we will all be California, but without the beautiful weather. The Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is LEFT of some Democrats on immigration.

Correct. It's a math thing. 70% of Hispanics vote Democrat. In any "pathway to citizenship" or Amnesty scenario, our country's slim margins turn into permanent Democrat domination. We could win on every issue except Amnesty, and still end up losing the war.

Some battles are absolute must-wins, and this was it. I was for Cruz, he had a strong anti-Amnesty position and agreed with my principles a lot better than Trump did. The electoral process has spoken, we did not get Cruz. Amnesty, and anyone who would push it, still has to be stopped.

Obviously Trump supporters disagree, but I believe that amnesty is much more likely under a Trump presidency than a Cruz one. From that perspective, it may be less likely under a Hillary presidency - unless Hillary sweeps in a majority and can push it through. But if the GOP retained the House, then I don't think Hillary would be able to push it through.

3.4 Free Trade and Migration

We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade. Political freedom and escape from tyranny demand that individuals not be unreasonably constrained by government in the crossing of political boundaries. Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders. However, we support control over the entry into our country of foreign nationals who pose a credible threat to security, health or property.

Stepping onto American soil does not make one suddenly understand what it takes to maintain liberty. They tend to bring the same cultural problems with them that they left. (See for instance how blue state lefties who flee their dysfunctional problems cause the same problems in the areas they flee to.) Up until the last 50 or so years, most immigration came from societies that had at least some similarities to US culture. Not perfect and one of the reasons for the great immigration moratorium was the flood of immigrants who were less than culturally compatible. So, you have people who come from more socialist countries who "shockingly" support the more socialist party. Now if you limited the numbers, you have a chance to immerse them in your society. If you have 1 in 5 being foreign born, you are in a pickle where the newcomers start to dictate to the current society.

This is where the GOPe fucks up the most.

They think that to get the Hispanic vote they need to pander on the border or other issues.

All we need to do is take the lead in education. Make the teacher's union El Diablo and promise to push for vouchers. The biggest issue with Hispanics is not ending up like the African Americans.

We could kill two birds with one stone if there was a concerted campaign of showing how democrat's "help" has insured a future of poverty in the black community and ask if the Hispanic community wants the same thing.

Hard hitting. Not politically correct.
