#SafeSpace: Jason Riley, Black Conservative Journalist, Disinvited from Virginia Tech Speech When They Realize He's a Black Conservative

Guilty of Thinking While Black.

A prominent conservative intellectual and critic of identity politics has been disinvited from a scheduled lecture at Virginia Tech over concerns about his race-related scholarship.

Jason Riley, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a Wall Street Journal columnist, was slated to speak at a lecture series hosted by the university’s business school, the BB&T Distinguished Lecture. But Virginia Tech higher-ups worried his controversial opinions would cause a scene.

"Mr. Riley, who is black, has attracted some negative attention since his publication in 2014 of Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed," wrote National Association of Scholars President Peter Wood in the pages of National Review, which broke the story.

According to a memo obtained by Mr. Wood, the head of the Virginia Tech Finance Department, Professor Vijay Singal, vetoed the speaking arrangement. He worried the campus was still recovering from the last BB&T Distinguished Lecture, which was delivered by Charles Murray on March 25.

"Still recovering" from a lecture -- you know, like a battalion of badly shot-up troops needs to recover from a battle.

As mentioned there, National Review broke the story:

The head of the finance department had not initially objected to Riley as the next BB&T speaker but later, when he realized that Riley had"written about race issues" in the Wall Street Journal, he decided Riley would have to go. The department head and others in the finance department "worried about more protests from the looney left" and were unmoved by arguments that it was wrong to give in to such intimidation.

...

What makes Jason Riley’s disinvitation notable, though, is how little prompted it. No students threatened to protest his speech or wrote editorials denouncing his views. No one picketed the finance department. Riley’s speech hadn't even been announced on campus. Mere fear of potential protest swayed Virginia Tech to cancel Riley’s pending event.

It gets worse. Because now Virginia Tech is claiming they never invited Jason Riley in the first place.

Read their claims here. They say it wasn't an "official" invitation.

[A] Virginia Tech official said on Tuesday that Mr. Riley's invitation could not have been revoked because it was never extended in the first place.

This sure sounds like an invitation:

"I don't buy this line that I wasn’t invited," Riley said when reached by telephone Tuesday at his Manhattan office.

He said he first received an invitation from Tech finance professor Douglas Patterson about three weeks ago. That invitation included past lecture series speakers, topics and logistical information about spending the night in Blacksburg.

"Based on my understanding of the English language it sounded like an invitation to me," Riley said.

Why is Virginia Tech lying about him not being technically "invited"? For the same reason an adulterous priest continues to give sermons about fidelity.

The left no longer believes in free speech. They are having wild, passionate sex with censorship. The sex is hotter because it's illicit and forbidden.

Yet, the community still expects them to pretend they believe in fidelity to free speech. They might feel a certain obligation to pretend to still believe in it.

But they don't.

They're censors. What they believe in is #SafeSpaces and #RecoveryPlayDoh.

But they still have to put on this sugar-wouldn't-melt-in-our-mouths purity act about giving a shit about free speech.

Our universities are now the most hostile place in the country to actual thought.

What can't go on, will not.

9 So our so called institutions of higher education are now nothing more than day care and sleepaway camps to be rid of young adults for a time, albeit at great expense. Anything that might upset the children from their fantasies simply cannot be allowed.

Thus civilization fails for lack of competent adults.

Behold the power of this fully activated heckler's veto!

As BC and I discuss during our newest podcast (link in nic go listen!), I'm concerned that I'm putting myself in an intellectual bubble at the moment. Why? Because so many people have gone so mouth frothy about current events, I've cut my sources of info way down in an attempt to keep from having blood come out of my eyes. On the one hand, that's very not good. On the other hand, I'm not daytime heroin eye shooting.

But. But the thing is that I know that only obtaining information that agrees with my viewpoint is a problem and a huge one at that. Intellectuals These Days (or more appropriately "intellectuals") appear to believe exactly the opposite. I don't know what that is but it's not scholarship.

Oh. Right. Human nature. That's what that is.

96 America's left, this current version of it, never believed in free speech.

They have their intellectual roots in the same cesspool that gave us Stalin's version of democracy, Arafat's version of liberation, and the current muzzie radical version of religious freedom.

It's an ugly mix that can't quite be explained by communism, and it's not exactly fascism either.

But it was never liberal, and certainly has never valued free speech. This was always something they understood as problematic, because they were/are trying to overtake a nation that does, indeed, have a history of valuing free speech.

They kept it up for a few minutes, but after it became apparent they weren't getting any traction, they stood up and left, to the delight of the rest of the audience.

The notion that the university admin would give in to the heckler's veto and cancel a lecture never even occurred to me. Things have certainly changed, not for the better.

124 Someone alluded to Milton Fiedman's thoughts on electing the wrong people in the morning dump. Here's the whole thing:

"I do not believe that the solution to our problem is
simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to
establish a political climate of opinion which will make it
politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right
thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people
to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right
thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of
office."

So, while I am still very disappointed this morning, I am resigned that Trump will be the nominee.

What can we do to make sure he keeps his promises to conservative actions and not immediately revert to his liberal leanings as soon as he hits the White House?

I would vote for a toad over Hillary Clinton.. so I probably will vote for Trump, even though in a blue state it won't much matter.

Posted by: ALH at May 04, 2016 11:21 AM (uLuPn)

Rule of law is so quaint!

Dems do not do it. Governor McAuliffe extended the vote to felons, thus he can.

But the VA GOP (who has the narrowest of margins of control in the VA legislature) is on it. They are already moving in the courts to block this. If the courts decide that the governor can't violate the law, then he can't.

The McAuliffe admin already tried to end run the law over CCW reciprocity by "interpretation," and the legislature faced them, forcing not only a reversal but reclaimed some ground that had been lost prior.

This is what an opposition party looks like.

I'm a little confused how we've been told for years that inviting people to campuses who are clearly radical or well out of mainstream thinking is int hte interest of "pursuing diversity of thought", while conversely inviting people who don't agree with the campus lords proclivities are curiously "hurtful", "discriminatory" or "racists".

"Climate change" very rapidly spread to and infected nearly every department in the universities once the federal academic research grant award mechanism began to prioritize funding applicants who focused on it, or at least referenced it.

So if you are filing a grant application for a study upon "Mating Habits Of The Lesser Spotted Mountain Gruntflop", you're shit out of luck, but if you are adroit enough to rework your application as "The Effect Of Anthropogenic Climate Change On The Mating Habits Of The Lesser Spotted Mountain Gruntflop", the federal coffers will open up and generously disburse the money you've asked for.

It's almost as though people respond to incentives or something.

Eisenhower had a few things to say about this in his farewell address. Right after the part about the "military-industrial complex". The left love to quote that part. They don't so much like quoting the rest of Ike's speech.

257 Most universities in India, are heavily influenced by socialist thinking. This permeates a lot of so-called intellectual thought in India.

Which is actually pretty strange in its own way, as most of the people at universities in India are from the Brahmin class, and are used to being in charge, and usually not reluctant to tell you so, even in America.

Having dealt with both Chinese and Indians, I would much rather deal with the Chinese. Regardless of it being a "communist" country, they still respect hard work, and effort. And they really want to make money.
Most Indians of Brahmin birth are lazy and expect things to be handed to them. So rethinking, the socialist mindset does work and explain a lot.

307 Ace, you say it can't go on, but enrollment says otherwise.
That normalcy bias is a huge thing. Huge. We still think we're a capitalist society. We still think and act as if we're a free society. The laws and reality don't seem to sway peoples' minds once they're made up.

So this can go on and will go on, as long as the majority of Americans see a college education as necessary to a better future for their children.

It is going to take something seismic to break that thought process, perhaps a collapse of financing, but my money says no on that. Perhaps yet another 8 years of graduates not finding good paying jobs in their field of study. I don't really know.

Besides, there's always the fallback position of pretending to "reform" colleges by shuffling the faculty deck. That could buy another decade.

Leftists know that education and media are the keys to socializing America, they won't let it go

Americans know that college is the path to a better future.

It can and will go on.

326 "He worried the campus was still recovering from the last BBT
Distinguished Lecture, which was delivered by Charles Murray on March
25."

Shouldn't the special snowflakes be awarded a Medal of Honor for their bravery? Or at least a Purple Heart?

327 Meh, the caliphate (coming soon to a Democrat controlled urban center near you) will put a stop to this kind of crap. Thanks to the Branch Trumpidians on their efforts to allow Hilldabeast to become the 45th President of the USA. I don't think there will be a POTUS #50

328 Sad that my alma mater caved into this environment of fear the left has created. I always thought VT was different

329 For all the sanctimony and hyperventilatoin about the dreaded "1950s Blacklisting" what is currently going on is many magnitudes worse.

Not only was communism an actual danger, with active communist attempts to influence public opinion to compromise our defense of the West against bloodthirsty totalitarians, but the actual scope of the "blacklist" was limited to only a few major players in TV and the movie industry.

By contrast, the contemporary blacklisting of anyone who challenges victim-orthodoxy, or expresses an independent opinion at odds with the Gaystapo, spreads across media, academia, sports and even into completely private companies.

The "but its only a private institution not government" argument actually bodes worse. Although there is plenty of official tyranny over speech (threatening prosecution of "climate deniers", holding up Tea Party 501c3s, demanding "donor lists" etc etc) the "merely" private nature of the new blacklist actually signals the loss of our culture of freedom.
If there is no culture of freedom, no strong and near universally shared feeling for liberty, then there is no hope for opposition to "official" infringement of freedom.

And, as nature abhors a vacuum, when the culture of freedom wanes in private, its a short span of time until the "official" represssions become bolder and more frequent.

Yes I'm in a cheery mood today.

331 > Mango Ice Cream. Not the more commonly found mango sherbet, but mango ice cream.

> You can generally find it in Indian (dot, not woo-woo) food stores.

Hey, that's racist!

332 As a Virginia Tech alumni, I mourn the demise of scholarship at this school. An engineering, agricultural, and mechanical institution has morphed into a multi-culti, pacified, social justice institute.

333 "For the same reason an adulterous priest continues to give sermons about fidelity."

A priest cannot marry, therefore cannot commit adultery. (Lutheran, Anglican, and some Orthodox priests can marry, but I don't think that was meant.)

For "adulterous" read "fornicating".

334 There's a group in Colorado whose mission is to keep straight white men from running for office. The group is led by 2...errr straight white men.

The stupid runs deep in this country.
