Alors, vous avez raison.Sharonda White’s son Nathanial is a junior at the school. "I thought it was a joke, I couldn't believe this was happening,” White said. We asked her son about his classroom experience. I-Team: “Does your teacher speak French?” Nathanial White: “No sir.” I-Team: “Have you ever heard him speak a word of French?” Nathanial White: “Bonjour, but everybody knows that.” The teacher, Albert Moyer, said in a brief phone interview that the extent of his French education was just one year in high school. The district removed its former French teacher and now assigns him to hall duty. The story doesn't say what that dispute was about. This guy, Moyer, is a replacement while they try to find someone qualified. The local news report casts the story as "why is this qualified teacher not in the classroom?" Mais, de mon cote, je voudrais savoir pourquoi cet ancien enseignant s'est vire'. In my case, oh those many years ago, the actual French teacher was out on maternity leave, so they just assigned some other random teacher to fill her slot for the year, rather than go to the trouble of hiring a new French teacher temporarily.
But the next year, in Tenth Grade, our for-real actual permanent French teacher was ALSO not fluent in French -- although, oddly. she was (of all things) Romanian, and Romanian is pretty close to French, so it wasn't difficult for her to pick it up. My turn for learning French and horrible accents story!
High school: My first year of French was taught by a French Canadian from Montreal. So that was Montreal French. Second year was taught by a woman who spoke 7-8 languages but mainly Spanish and she was Basque. So yeah not so much French as Basque. Third year was by a woman from Paris and first day of class we had no idea if she was speaking English or French. She was somewhere past appalled and into openly weeping at all of our accents. So that was Parisian French. Cut to college: First year French in college was by a guy who taught Russian, German and French. He was a Muscovite. So Russian French. Second year French was by another Basque. Third year French was by an Italian from Naples. To the extent I speak French, which I barely do, it's this mishmash of Canadian, Basque, Parisian, Russian and Italian accents. Good times, good times. If you think that's bad, though, ponder this: My Eighth Grade Sex Education teacher did not speak a word of (brace yourself) English!. Seriously. He was the soccer coach, newly hired from Mexico, because 100% of the kids on the soccer team were Spanish speaking, so in that role it wasn't really necessary for him to know English. But then the district mandated that every Junior High had to have Sex Education, but did not allocate any funds to hire Sex Education teachers (since the district was constantly broke and on the verge of bankruptcy), so it was up to each school to dub an existing teacher as the Sex Ed teacher. Since the soccer coach had the lightest teaching load and the fewest duties, he was the unlucky one who got the new assignment.
Not only could he not teach the curriculum, he couldn't even communicate with us. So the entire semester was us just siting in the class flipping through the haphazardly-assembled reading materials, and throwing paper airplanes at each other, while the teacher sat at the desk in front reading Mexican soccer sports magazines. Then he gave everyone an automatic "A." Sweet! Posted by: zombie at May 02, 2016 03:52 PM (jBuUi) 51

Story time:
A million years ago when I was young and idealistic my fiancee and I volunteered at an after school program at a jr. high in central Harlem. We were trying to figure out what to do with the kids when we learned that they had about 20 donated Apple computers in the basement that no one was using. (This is 1986, so it's Apple IIs and the other kind). We thought we could teach a computer class. Well, getting them up out of the basement and into a room was no small task. There aren't enough outlets. There's not a good lock on the door. The janitors or their union had a problem. So we do arts and crafts and whatever and fight the bureaucracy and by about February we get a secure room with electric outlets and 20 computers lined up on 20 desks. Then we hear from the principal. (Lovely lady, impossible job). There is a computer teacher and she doesn't want us teaching her kids because she doesn't want to mess up her instruction. Computer teacher is a weird dudette. Wears a white lab coat all day. We finally arrange a summit meeting with the principal, and as it grinds on I say, "You're a computer teacher. It's February and we just got your computers installed. What have you been teaching them all year?" "Computer math", she says. Posted by: Bandersnatch at May 02, 2016 03:54 PM (1xUj/) 70

Let's see - to become a French teacher you have to do what - major in Education with a French minor? Even if you spend junior year aboard in France or Quebec, I don't see how someone can continue to speak it fluently for years if they only speak it while teaching HS French for a few hours a day. Reading and writing skills could be kept up if you made the effort to do so, but speaking would be harder. It's not that difficult to find native English speakers to practice your English with if you live in France. It might be a bit harder to find a French person to talk to in flyover country, USA. And I would think that if you don't use it in daily conversation you'd soon get rusty.

77 Let's see - to become a French teacher you have to do what - major in Education with a French minor? Even if you spend junior year aboard in France or Quebec, I don't see how someone can continue to speak it fluently for years if they only speak it while teaching HS French for a few hours a day. Reading and writing skills could be kept up if you made the effort to do so, but speaking would be harder. It's not that difficult to find native English speakers to practice your English with if you live in France. It might be a bit harder to find a French person to talk to in flyover country, USA. And I would think that if you don't use it in daily conversation you'd soon get rusty.

Second year, in high school proper, was easier, and third year was easier still. By the time I stopped studying it, in college, I was up to reading (simple) short stories, and discovering that writers varied in clarity and readability in Spanish just as they do in English. All of that, and I still can't compose a sentence on paper or in my head for conversation. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at May 02, 2016 04:09 PM (0IyZm) 154

"...So sorry. You haven't been credentialed by the Gowned Credentialers..."
I'm against credentials in basic education. I believe that the ability to teach - to actually convey knowledge to another person - is a talent that can't be "learned". Like singing. You've either got a talent for it or you don't. No amount of music and singing lessons will make you a singer that can bring a song to life. You may be able to stay in time and even hit the written notes, but you just aren't getting it across. Same with teaching. You can have a masters or doctorate in education, know all the techniques and procedures, follow all the best practices, but if you don't have that special talent to connect to the person you're trying to get through to, it's not going to happen. Just a blank stare coming back at you. You can't credential this. Therefore, there is an enormous amount of total incompetents with walls full of credentials failing to teach our children. And on the other side, lots of people with a special gift who can't get paid for what they can do best because of bureaucracy and regulations. Things need to change. A court order is about to cut off WhatsApp service in Brazil for three days, according to a report from O Globo. First announced on April 26th, the order was scheduled to take effect at 1PM ET today. That measure is the result of a failed 2013 access order from a branch of civil police that investigates criminal activity online. Because of the app's encryption system, messages on WhatsApp are typically inaccessible to outside actors, so it is unlikely that the company could have complied with the court order.
The order specifically targets Brazil's five central wireless carriers, which are forbidden from transmitting WhatsApp data for the duration of the blackout period. Any carriers found violating that order will be fined 500,000 reals, equivalent to roughly $140,000. Some carriers would not confirm they had received the order when reached by O Globo, but they are expected to comply. Posted by: Klatu at May 02, 2016 04:13 PM (e8kgV) 177

Rome had bureaucracy before then. They made Joseph and Mary travel hundreds of miles to take a census. Posted by: joe, living dangerously I can only hope you're joking! That element of the Gospel story (forcing people to travel to the birth towns to be counted for the census) is completely made up, and never once happened in real life. This is well documented. The Roman Empire had elements of a bureaucracy, but it actually was more loosely governed and more disorganized than most people realize. Also, it was nepotistic, which is kid of the opposite of bureaucratic. Posted by: zombie at May 02, 2016 04:15 PM (jBuUi) 190

Posted by: grammie winger at May 02, 2016 04:13 PM (dFi94) This subject, the inability for society to be able to recognize people who have the talent to connect and understand, or communicate to others, is a big problem in other areas too. In the medical field, I hear people who want to spend time talking with their doctors. For the most part, I believe this is a waste of time. Most doctors don't want to talk to you. They hate it. A far better method is to have advanced degree registered nurses or even a new medical category of people who do just this. Talk with patients. Take the time to find out what they're feeling and be able to ask the questions and get the answers - spoken and unspoken - about what is going on. Then that person can distill that down to medical terms and communicate it to the doctors in a form they appreciate. If, after that, the doctor wants to ask questions or talk in general, fine. But use someone whose primary ability is communication to begin with. Posted by: jwest at May 02, 2016 04:20 PM (Zs4uk) 217

I recall an article on the "rubber rooms" where the New York public schools stash their teachers who aren't allowed to teach.
In the vast majority of cases, those teachers were kiddy diddlers. The union won't let even a child molester be fired without a huge and expensive fight, but the district's legal counsel also won't let them put the offender back in contact with kids. (Known prior offender placed in a position to potentially reoffend == many more zeroes on the settlement check.) So there these teachers sit. For years and years, until retirement. But if you call this system of "education" clinically crazy and say it needs to be blown up, you'll be asked why, oh why, do you HATE THE CHILDREN. my theory is that this is because they're treated with such deference that they grow to believe that no one else has anything important to tell them unless they ask for information from the person in question to begin with. even then there's issues with them hearing what they're told, rather than what they want to hear. and don't get me started on nurses... Stupid law suit of the day
Starbucks CEO: We must reclaim the American dream A Starbucks customer from Chicago has filed a $5 million lawsuit against the coffee chain, accusing it of using too much ice in its cold drinks. The suit, filed by Stacy Pincus, claims that while Starbucks (SBUX) advertises its cold drinks by fluid ounce, the numbers are only accurate when ice is added to a drink. "Starbucks is advertising the size of its Cold Drink cups on its menu, rather than the amount of fluid a customer will receive when they purchase a Cold Drink -- and deceiving its customers in the process," the suit says. A Venti cold drink, for example, is advertised as having 24 fluid ounces, but only includes 14 ounces of the actual liquid, the lawsuit claims. The rest is ice. When my mother was young, there was a significant population around here who spoke French as their first language, and the old folks spoke only French. Now, it was Quebecker French, but, there you go. During WWII, a Parisian refugee stayed with a family down the street. My grandmother stopped over to parlez one time, but after ascertaining her accent (it's a little more than an accent, really) would speak no more.
There are organizations -- ISTR it's Academe Francais and the French-Speaking League -- that exist just to keep teachers and business travelers in practice. They meet, speak only French, have a lecture in French, and I'm pretty sure have drinks, French drinks. My senior English prof, a Swarthmore Chaucerian, could switch back and forth between the languages mid-sentence, with gesture to match, and often was the speaker at said meetings. This was how education majors with a French minor in the Midwest were expected to build and maintain their skills. The regular members thought it great fun indeed. Going to these does not pay extra, and it cuts into your Masters of Education (and now, PhD in Ed.Technology) seminar time, so, honored in the breach.
