A NYTimes article on "monotasking," that is, actually paying attention to one thing we are doing rather than annihilating our concentration with a barrage of multiple sources of stimulation.
I wrote about this last month, when I reviewed a book called Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World. (Don't comment on old post; the site autobans IPs posting in old threads because it thinks they're spammers.) Been a month and a half, maybe, since I became a proud Twitter Quitter and several aspects of my life have improved. Less distraction = more actual time. Distracted time is crap time -- neither doing one thin nor the other; neither really working, nor really relaxing, either. The attempt to cheat work hours by mixing in zero-calorie non-entertainments (Twitter, Facebook. clickbait articles with pictures of large breasts (gets me every time) just winds up making you feel guilty about not working, and then you cheat your actual downtime by mixing in light crap that you can pretend is sort of work related (like "building your brand on Twitter") when it's really nothing of the sort. Just leads to a bad habit of wasting work hours by doing low-quality, distracted work, and then "making up for it" by wasting leisure hours by doing low-quality, distracted leisure. Here's another NYT article that's (sort of) vaguely about the idea of defeating a bad habit by changing your every day environments and patterns. Actually, it's about a woman who lost weight by leaving the city she had grown fat in and moving permanently to a place she had gotten thin in (in fat camp), but I think one can take it more broadly as an endorsement of the idea that bad habits need to be dehabituated. I guess that's kind of obvious. But I read a good point, somewhere: No one can make any change by willpower. People's reservoirs of willpower are limited. The only way to make changes is to do things as a habit until they become a habit. Then just try to maintain the habit. I guess that's not such a big distinction but I think there's something to it. I went somewhere new last weekend when the in-laws were in town. They built a new hotel downtown and it has a "roof-top bar". We only stayed for one drink though. My two BILs were not impressed with the drinks they got. I kept mine simple, bourbon over ice. Hard to screw that up.

I totally understand the dilemma, grammie. I tried to do this so many times before and kept hitting that same brick wall. It was the puppy. She kept getting her jaws of life on meverything and chewing through boxes of crap I had stored. And it forced me realize, I don't even know what's in those boxes anymore yet, here I am protecting them like a bodyguard. Juno tearing through everything in my house just forced me to take inventory and get rid of a lot of junk I've been keeping for no good reason. When I started going through boxes I brought from TX, I was embarrassed. I kept thinking I hauled this crap across state lines???

The Brits have the right idea. They'll limit the number of episodes and seasons, because the quality almost invariably starts to suffer after a few years. OTOH, their food sucks. (I mean real Brit food, not Indian)

I have two habits I alternate between: exercising and keeping an eye on what i eat, and being very sedentary and eating whatever.
either behavior quickly becomes a habit and gains momentum.

I love those people. I keep hoping they will recommend something I will like. I hate most everything that's on TV these days, but I keep scouting for the gems that pop up from time to time. Sadly, most often I am disappointed with what was recommended.
Now, it's time for me to be one of those people. Better Call Saul is great. But, season 2 just ended, so another year to go to get any new ones. For those who haven't tried it, you still have 20 episodes you can binge watch.

I still watch Flash, although the most recent episode looked dumb so I haven't bothered. Haven't seen Arrow in over a year (and was super sporadic even then). Never saw a single episode of Legends. And only saw two episodes of Supergirl (premiere, and the Flash episode).
I don't watch anything else.
I've found that it's super-easy to quit watching TV shows. Just miss the episodes for a couple of weeks, and my enthusiasm vanishes very quickly.
Netflix can get me because of the binge potential. Instead of having to wait a week between episodes, I can find out what happened next *right now*. But I haven't even done that. I started watching Daredevil Season 1, but gave up after a particularly bloody and horrific fight mid-way through the season. And I turned off Jessica Jones when the soap opera angle started to get to be a bit too much.

I do and will continue to watch TV, though--you're bound to have downtime at some point, whether you're lying in bed or need to cool down. You might as well do something productive with it (and, yeah, I'm counting documentaries or a funny show that gives away a few jokes as something productive).
I'll also second what somebody said earlier. There are so many good shows out there now that, if it's not great, it's a waste of time, and even many great shows you shouldn't have time for.

In a way, BitTorrent has been useful in dealing with the TV thing. I have to actively download an episode before watching, I can't just sit on the sofa and stab buttons on the remote.
Plus of course, it doesn't put a dime into Hollywood's pockets. Fuck them.

Those two shows were 24 for the first three seasons until it got repetitive and Vengeance Unlimited. That last show only lasted one season because the network kept replacing it with "specials" and moving the time slot around so it could never develop and audience.
I consider most network TV now trash which is why I got rid of cable and then satellite.

I've found thanks to my web obsession, most of my TV viewing these days is limited to local news and weather, game shows (specifically Family Feud and my fave Jeopardy), and late night TV (particularly James Corden, who I find funny as long as he's not being political).
I also still enjoy Everybody Loves Raymond/King of Queens reruns on TV Land, but have seen so many of them by now I don't feel compelled to watch anymore. Probably the one show that really grabs me anymore is the reruns of The Middle on Hallmark Channel (yes I admit it, I'm a Patricia Heaton fan).

I'm down in FL working with the local rep and we decide to break for lunch after our meeting with a customer. I find a Thai place on Yelp with good reviews and we go. It's inside a strip mall.
We park and walk up to the place and some people are standing around on the curb. They see us coming and one of them tells me, "uhhh, you may not want to go in there....there's some crazy guy in there."
Instantly, I'm curious and want to find out more!
I ask what the deal is and they tell me some guy sat down to eat his lunch, then starts going off about how the food he got wasn't right and that his Pepsi didn't taste like Pepsi and threatened to leave. I ask if the police were on their way, and the people outside said yes. My rep hears all this and gets really nervous and says we should find somewhere else to eat. No freakin' way!!! I want to see what happens. I decided right then and there that we were going to stay and see what was about to unfold.
The owner unlocks the front door and waves us inside. We go in and find a table and order our lunch. We're both looking around for a "crazy guy" but all we see are the restaurant staff and some overweight hipster looking dude sitting in a booth wearing a winter ski-hat. There was no one else, so that had to be him.
My rep and I get our food and start eating, all the while we're talking about how if you go to a Thai restaurant, order Thai food, there's a small chance you'll get something exotic and spicy that may or may not agree with you later. This guy probably ate his meal and decided he wasn't going to pay for it and wanted to dash.
At this point, four Orange Co deputies show up at the door. The hipster guy jumps up and runs to the door shouting, "HELP, THEY'VE LOCKED ME IN!!!" The deputies enter, separate the concerned parties and start trying to piece together wtf is going on. They take hipster guy outside and talk with him for 20 mins or so and come inside. One of them tells the owner that he understands what's going on and that it wasn't worth trying to press charges for what was probably $7 worth of food. They ask that they let him go with a warning to never set foot in there again. I didn't see hipster guy walk away, but they probably warned him off.
I turn to my rep with a frowny face because I thought there was going to be some action about to happen on my lunch hour. Total freakin' let down!!! The deputies should have made hipster dude take out the garbage or something useful to at least give back some value to what looked like a hard-working Thai family trying to run a business. I had pictured some mentally unstable guy throwing his Pad See Ew and chair around the place, and that I was about to witness some tazers going off, and maybe some wooden baton massages given.
Oh well...
Chicken with chili and lemon grass was good.

I know, hard to believe from a Moron.
I often have to FORCE myself to get out of the apartment. Half the time, when I go to the gun show or to the swap meet, or Ikea etc, I'm not really looking to buy anything. I just want to get OUT for awhile.
Then again, this weekend is a bit better. Going to the Dallas International Guitar Festival tomorrow. Saw it linked on Insty earlier this week, and figured it gave me the proper excuse to get out.

And when they *do* finally deliver... it's just a hand-over to another long, overdrawn-out promise.
On top of that... there's the show that had big conclusions, and left tons of people completely underwhelmed or alienated. Good examples IMHO:

That's a lifetime habit, not a 7 year habit. But at least the seasons are all contained within a single year, and you get a slightly new cast every season. And outside of the stupid 1994 strike, you always get a real season finale, not a giant "To Be Continued" sign.

I watched "Firefly" recently (i.e., 2014). I though it was great. I still had trouble making it past episode 4.
The thing about the 7-year-series is that there's almost always going to be a bad year or two in there. "Oh, that was great...well, season 4 was a bit of a slog but it was worth it to get to season 5." So, I have to waste 12-25 hours to watch stuff that the FANS admit is crap, so I can get to the other side?
Pfeh.
I know Supernatural fans. 200+ episodes and still going. I can hardly contemplate the effort it would take.

Haha that's what it seems like. I listened to one on XM that wasn't even forensic. Some lady's stepsons hired a hit man...but they weren't charged because they didn't have any evidence but they did charge the guy they thought acted as the hit man but he got off because...no evidence.
Then the next episode was about someone who had completely destroyed a skull to hide evidence. But of course I got to my destination before that one was solved.

Likewise with Hollyweird. I used to enjoy movies and TV and spent a lot of my younger life on those things. Then I went cold turkey. This doesn't mean I never see a movie or watch a TV show. Sometimes it's circumstantially unavoidable.
But I often have the same reactions to today's mass-marketed audiovisual entertainment that I do now to overly sugary foods. Gah! How did I ever stomach this stuff? It's awful!

I love a good lager, and this one is pretty good. Way too far west to get Brooklyn lager, which is up near the top.
Coors quit making Batch 19, but I know a guy at Coors who got me a case of it. I think he can get me more. I hope so.
There are small brewery outfits all across America, and Colorado has a good share of them, but few if any make an old-fashioned lager like the ones I like.
But if you like IPAs, which I don't there is a whole universe of them from the small breweries. I was told a lager takes much longer to make, which is why they are all pumping out IPA.

In a fair number of cases, these "elite" Saudi units have Saudi officers (always!) but the enlisted rank and file are what amount to imported mercenaries. Not particularly good ones.

My husband zeroes in on certain shows. (He's a big GoT's fan, so tonight we will watch this together. ) To be honest, nothing is good right now. Once Upon a Time, is about it. Cool fx, and some pretty good acting for some of the chars. They get prog wiggy sometimes, but not too bad.

I don't want a year or two of great stuff and then 5 years of disappointing crap, followed by a cancellation because everyone got bored and quit watching.
Breaking Bad pretty much did it right. Not only did the episodes and seasons work on their own, but the whole series had an arc that made sense and then ended.

I'm loving this schtick.
This bit reminded me of one of my favorite movies, "Quest for Fire".
I legit, non-ironically, no-shit love this movie and will defend its merits.
But our hero goes off to find fire, leaving his tribe on an island in the swamp. He walks from Africa to Scotland to Canada and back, fights off all sorts of Orcs, knocks up Rae Dawn Chong, and returns with fire when the migrating birds indicate that the season has changed.
And the tribe is still on the rainy swamp island waiting for him.

so I end up watching the same episode all week until I finally see the end, hehe. My husband laughs, he knows the whole show even if he's in another room doing something else, he hears it. So one series can last a year...

It's much easier at the end of the day to come home and just veg for two hours than to try and haul myself out somewhere else, usually fighting traffic along the way.

Yeah, CO Alex, I get that so much. IIRC, you like dancing. That requires money, companionship, and driving in bad traffic. I like dancing too and have solved that same dilemma by watching dancing videos facetiming the few close friends I have that share the same interest.. It sure beats just sitting at home alone binge watching on Netflix. The only way I will binge watch anything on Netflix is if I have a friend doing it with me, online or in person.
I have a best blog friend who loves music, so we talk about and listen to music together. Makes a huge difference and costs nothing and requires no driving. I do the same thing anytime I watch a movie too.
It's not ideal, but it's a huge improvement. I hate the idea of settling and not getting it all at once with that perfect someone, but finding a halfway feels just great and I'm perfectly happy spending the rest of my life this way.

I am assuming that CA is a desired destination for you for one reason or another. It's such a high cost of living. It's still a gorgeous state, but I know so many people trapped there bc of the economy and real estate. A couple family members lost their shirts getting out of there. If you make that move, you have to have a decent job and an exit plan if you want to leave. Maybe you should expand your horizons and apply elsewhere though this it's probably way past deadline applications for most schools. I wouldn't rule out a late application. I applied to graduate school in June and even worked out a scholarship during the summer. Colleges are so competitive now. They want you. Don't rule out other graduate programs bc you think it's too late to apply.

When walking my dog, she is my protection. For her protection against dogs that may attack, I use my battle cane.
It's a regular walking cane, yet very solid. Nothing hidden in the hilt so it's completely legal and deadly. But mostly deadly.
On rainy days, a large umbrella, opened when a dog is close, works wonders also.

I still have Drudge as my home page because it's a convenient source for news links. Breitbart's comment section was a cesspool long before Trump. It has a very poor signal-to-noise ratio. There might be 1000 comments to an article, of which 100 might be worth reading. If someone links an article I may read it, but I don't bother with the comments.
The problem with Gateway Pundit is that Hoft is so anxious to report BREAKING NEWS that he often goes off half-cocked. And I mean really often. I've said as much many times here. Once again, this preceded Trump.
My favorite such incident at Gateway Pundit was a few years ago when he linked a video of a rock band's stage show which featured them "disemboweling" an actress who looked like Sarah Palin. He was all in high dudgeon about it. Commenters were horrified, calling it "hate speech" and "inciting violence".
Until a commenter chimed in saying, "Dude, it's GWAR. It's their schtick. They do that with everybody." And someone promptly produced a YouTube link showing them hanging the Obamas in effigy.

So Star Wars Prom
They had the kids walk down a red carpet as they announced their names. The introductions were sprinkled with Star Wars references and the students walked under a canopy of light sabers held by the teachers. Once inside the dark gym it looked all starry.
There were life size cardboard stand up of Star Wars figures like Chewbacca and Darth Vader that they took their couples pictures with. Some kid, or teacher, had brought in their models of a Walker and other Star Wars land and air craft, properly lit up and on pedestals.
Looked really cool. Black balloons and silver streamers. I hope they have a great time

Funny you should mention the building. The movie was filmed in & takes place in Philadelphia, M. Knight is from there, but that building does not exist at the address given in the movie, not even close. It was the only thing that bugged me about the movie.

Did a fly-in trip to Ontario once. A local showed me how to fillet the Y bones out. I was pretty decent at it, but that was many years ago...Feeding them to Eagles a great idea if they're invasive. two birds/ one stone as both would eat a lot of trout.
