I Want the Benefits of Maternity Leave Without Bothering to Have Children, Says Stupid Fat Whore

Ah yes. I'm in a bad mood.

Insomnia struck again.

To be honest, I'm not sure if this warrants the level of outrage (and insult) I'm giving it. It's a novel -- and it's a chiclit comedy, with a misunderstanding and a pretend pregnancy suit to scam her company.

I'm not sure how seriously she intends the idea of "me-ternity." I think maybe she does mean it a little.

It's extraordinary that feminists claim they want the right to work, then when they get the right to work like men do -- meaning, you show up at your job and work and no, you can't just take a sabbatical (me-battical?) when you feel like you Just Can't Even -- they begin bitching and moaning and claiming they need society to reconform itself yet again to accommodate their ever-growing list of vital needs and demands.

If you don't want to work, fine -- get married, be a housewife.

But what is this shit with the claims that they want to work, and then the constant whining about what work actually entails?

Meghann Foye, 38, was jealous of co-workers clocking out for maternity leave, and decided she needed a break of her own. Here, the author of the novel "Meternity" (Mira, out now), tells The Post’s Anna Davies why she believes every woman deserves mandated "me time."

I was 31 years old in 2009, and I loved my career. As an editor at a popular magazine, I got to work on big stories, attend cool events, and meet famous celebs all the time.

And yet, after 10 years of working in a job where I was always on deadline, I couldn't help but feel envious when parents on staff left the office at 6 p.m. to tend to their children, while it was assumed co-workers without kids would stay behind to pick up the slack.

"You know, I need a maternity leave!" I told one of my pregnant friends...

[T]he more I thought about it, the more I came to believe in the value of a "meternity" leave -- which is, to me, a sabbatical-like break that allows women and, to a lesser degree, men to shift their focus to the part of their lives that doesn't revolve around their jobs.

"To a lesser degree, men" -- because while women are luminous creatures full of creative energies for things besides their jobs, men are expected to be workbrute labordrudges who show up every day to punch the clock while their female co-"workers" (quotes heavily sarcastic) are galavanting around on some much-unearned me-time.

The strongest possible arguments against the equality of the sexes are the stupid self-serving indulgent indolent things that come pouring out of feminists' mouths every damn day.

Feminism is a cult, and one of the cult beliefs of feminism is that women must work, for working is empowering. But it's quite clear that many women simply do not want to work -- yet they feel for maximum "empowerment" they must pretend at work.

Many men don't want to work, either. But we call them "bums." We do not make up cutesy neologisms like "me-ternity" to explain why some lazy men take months and years "figuring themselves out" going on a "Personal Journey to the Heart of the Unexplored Continent Known As Me."

We just say they're broke-ass layabouts.

But feminism says you cannot say anything about a feminist woman that is not positive. So we need to create new words to describe people who want a paycheck without having to actually work.

Just for them. Not for anyone else.

I can't help but notice that all the truly pernicious ideologies seem to posit that the believers in the ideology no longer have to sully themselves with dirty work. Islamists feel work is beneath them; they are Warrior Princes of Allah, who are to be served by slaves. Their "work" is only murder and thinking about Allah's lists of people to be hit.

Communists don't believe in work; they believe in elevating a Revolutionary Vanguard which will Think Big Thoughts while the proles work their benefit. (Communism simply seeks to displace one overcaste for another -- the incoming overcaste being the communists. Go figure!)

And some feminists, despite their religious conviction that work is "empowering" (read: a holy catechism) for women, seem to agitate endlessly for time off.

Work is tough. That's why they call it work.

And some people are simply too lazy or feel too entitled to work.

So they subscribe to ideologies that call their utter unwillingness to make themselves economically productive (or usefully reproductive) seem somehow noble.

Every asshole's dream: To be paid for doing nothing.*

Thus a thousand ideologies breeding rent-seekers and pressure-politics pirates, looting others' hard-won wealth.

* A commenter points out, rightly, that this is everyone else's dream too.

Quite right.

I should have said the asshole move comes in when you begin dreaming up ideological dogmas that claim that you don't have to work, but may seize the wealth of another to support you in your super-urgent Religious Work (whether for Black Lives Matter, communism, "democratic socialism," feminism, or Islamism).

19 OK, after skimming through the article I kind of agree with that woman. Women who have babies by their own choice should not get benefits not allocated to other employees.

This is why a LOT of employers try to use stealth methods of not hiring women who are likely to get pregnant shortly after being hired. Of course it has to be stealth because it is AGAINST the law to NOT hire them based on potential pregnancy.

35 I read the article, and in the end the author concedes that *she* was the one who worked the extra long hours, that it wasn't really the parents to blame (though I'm sure that does happen - people who can stay late pick up the slack of those who must leave the office by a certain time).

The bottom line is that this "me-ternity" idea is about fairness, which millenials seem to have internalized as a core value. Life is not fair. Singles may stay late during crunch time, others may work while their colleague is out sick with the flu at a really inconvenient time. heck, Jewish people take shifts over Christmas so that Christian colleagues can take time off, people who have family in town work holiday hours for colleagues who have to travel cross-country for Thanksgiving, and on and on.

Life is not fair. There is no giant ledger in HR that ensures that everyone's hours exactly match up on a regular basis. Grow up and get over it.

48 Joke's on her. Employers don't look at benefits in a discrete, independent manner. If she thinks everyone should get mandated vacation whenever they feel like, it's going to come from her compensation somewhere else. Either directly from the paycheck, or by the the other benefits her job offers (401k matching, general vacation/sick time, which health insurance she gets with her job, etc.)

73 There used to be maternity leave years ago. We called it a "housewife". But the left successfully demeaned that term as being derogatory, because somehow it limited a woman's capabilities. You know, the stress, challenge and hard work of caring for your family...and keeping your sanity.

By the way, as a result divorce rate and teen pregnancy soared. You know, because that role was so unnecessary. Which led us to increasing abortion rates to ease the guilt of visible failure.

102 The strongest possible argument against the equality of the sexes are the stupid self-serving indulgent indolent things that come pouring out of feminists' mouths every damn day.

(apologies for tl;dr - short version I'm a huge heartless bitch)

Ding ding ding ding ding!

By nearly any measure, I should be considered a feminist. I check pretty much all the correct boxes. But hell to the no I have never and will never call myself a feminist because fuck that shit. To clarify, by fuck that shit I mean the notion that women are luminous beings of pure light who are so much better than those icky icky icky men.

You know what? That viewpoint is actually dehumanizing in an excessive degree. It posits that women do not partake of the full panoply of the human existence, include the bad parts.

Women are human beings. Some will be good. Some will be bad. Some will be noble. Some will be evil. Some will be kind. Some will be cruel. You know, because women are *people* and people have in them both a tiny bit of good and a huge helping of not so good and some have an even bigger helping of flat out evil. Denying that women can be so denies the essential humanness of women.

And that's not sexist at all. Nope nope nope nope nope. It doesn't become less sexist merely because women say it about other women.

I always have to tread lightly in this area because as someone without a child and as someone who has worked with several parents with small children, I have rather, hmmm, how to make myself seem less sociopathic, hmmm, intensely held opinions regarding that subset of women (and some men) who play the Mommy (or Daddy) Card.

There are those who seem to believe that because Mimsey has a game! a play! the sniffles! parent teacher conference! birthday party! whatthefuckever! that means that I, as the single, childless one, must needs do all of that person's work without also receiving that person's pay. No, no, I do not have to stay until 1 a.m. to get all the work done that you couldn't because hey must leave by 5 on the dot or the child care expenses are so high and just can't afford a sitter and yes, yes, that must be done by 8 a.m. due to non-negotiable deadline but sorry, My Precious Child.

Yeah. No. Mind you, I have a ton of respect for working parents and I don't comprehend how you do it and I don't mind picking up the slack because we all have stuff happen. I mind, intently, when a person (and 99.5% of the time it's a woman) believes she's entitled to others doing her work just Because Mommy.

That's the underlying tension to some of this. Childless workers (me) feel that some parents are taking advantage and then it turns into all parents are doing it and then it turns into why the hell do they get a "vacation" and I don't!

Which is, needless to say, ridic but there you have it. If someone (me) feels that she's being taken advantage of, then that someone (me) will be a huge bitch about it.

107 The other thing this "me-ternity" is slamming is how our culture rewards families, which didn't just happen randomly.

There are tax breaks, maternity leave, and all sorts of other ways in which our society encourages families, because they are a building block of a stable society. It doesn't men that single and/or childless have less value, per se, just a way of encouraging a positive to society behavior. The Left has been at war with all of the ways in which stable families are encouraged, whether it's redefining marriage, abortion, or trying to destroy private institutions like churches.

114 I have absolutely no problem with this philosophy as long as women who exercise their "Meternity" leave are paid less then those who don't, and ante-up more for their health care costs since pregnancy costs cause women's healthcare to be significantly higher.

Short version: You can't have equal pay if you don't do equal work. You can't have equal health care costs if you are a significantly higher risk. Life span is another reason women's health costs are higher as well.

So, full speed ahead.

In most companies maternity leave is not fully paid and relies on some type of disability insurance to actually make payments. If you can meet the terms of that deal, that is disability, you can do the same.

We also have unpaid leaves equal to the maternity period. Any employee is welcome to take them. But they are unpaid.

Many people also use their vacation time as part of that maternity leave. Others are happy to come back quicker.

I agree with you lizzy on the benefits of families, where I stop is the FMLA. It should be up to the employer. As an example,
One of our employees was fired, then got sick. My husband kept paying him for 6 weeks till he recovered and got another job. Paid his cobra too. Most employers are good people and are reasonable.
But we shouldn't have to pay men for 3 months paternity leave if they are a key employee. This is where we are headed.

226 I'm not sure how seriously she intends the idea of "me-ternity." I think maybe she does mean it a little.

It makes just as much sense as the insane gay pretend marriage cases that hinged on "equal protection" for job benefits that went to actual married employees. If one takes the "equal protection" crap seriously for homos then one is inevitably led to the idea that single workers are also entitled to the same level of benefits that others receive for all sorts of things - single workers deserve the health insurance benefits to put some other (and some kids) on their work insurance, single women deserve the same benefits as maternity leave and even single men deserve that same level of maternity leave benefit (for as much as any woman has gotten it).

It's all insane, obviously, but that's why the gay pretend marriage "equal protection" argument was unadulterated, retarded bullshit.

WM is doing poorly because it can't grow anymore. When there's a store on every corner in America, growth is hard to come by. They were hoping China would be the answer, but it's been a lot harder than the company thought.

264 So, let me get in this brief rant.

As a woman who chose to leave the workforce to have our kid, I was faced with this shit from working women:

"You don't work, right? Would you mind picking my son up from school and keeping him this afternoon until I get off work? Our nanny is off today."

"You don't work, right? I can't help at the school fair next week, but I've got some cookies that need delivering. Will you come by the house and pick them up? Oh, and I'll need the plate back after. Thanks bye!"

"You don't work, right? Can I drop Jimmy off at your place tomorrow morning? Our nanny is off and he could use some play time with your son."

Definitely. A lot of working parents do feel bad when they have to leave when they should be working overtime, and I have come back to office with the kid (and toys and pizza to keep him busy) and/or worked weekends to make up the time.

Posted by: Lizzy at April 29, 2016 02:22 PM (NOIQH)

272 You know, I can see both sides as I have worked in offices before I had my child and afterward.
Women will abuse it both ways. I was a little upset when I was much younger having to stay in the office for hours and hours when some of my colleagues were bolting before 5:00 pm to make their MetroNorth trains back to the suburbs for their kids.
Then, when I started working at a firm after my daughter was 6 yrs old, I did my absolute best to not be like that. I stayed ridiculously long hours at work because that was what was expected of me. But truthfully, it became almost impossible for me to do both -- especially because I'm caring for her ny myself. And toward the end, I did get bitter over the fact that no one - not even my bitch female boss who had 2 kids of her own - gave a shit that realistically, I could not put in 12 hour days and then some because I had no other caregiver help. I never asked for time off. I just didn't go to my daughter's assemblies. Simple as that. If I wanted to keep getting paid and get a raise, I had to choose my reasons for leaving early wisely. And it really sucked.

297 Ok, so I'm late to the thread and haven't read all the comments, please forgive me if I repeat what anyone else has said.

Here's the thing: Maternity leave ain't no sabbatical. Seriously, these people who think parents have it so damn easy are idiots, most especially in the infant/newborn stage.

Having a newborn baby is stressful as hell. You're exhausted from giving birth, and from the general lack of sleep as the baby has a lot of needs and you have to meet them no matter what time of day it is. And if it's your firstborn, you're likely freaking out because you don't have the first clue as to what the hell you're supposed to do.

The whole idea of me-ternity, like new parents are just loaf in around at home doing the Peg Bundy routine for weeks in end is beyond fricking stupid and clueless. The lady who suggested this should be mocked relentlessly.

302 My problem, as a single woman, is not with maternity leave. It is with the asshole female coworkers who expect you to put aside your vacation plans for theirs since, "You don't have kids, so your schedule is more flexible." That is bullshit. You having a kid and a job does not bestow upon you special privileges that those of us who are barren dont get. I used to get shit on all the time by a coworker with a kid - that is when she wasn't bringing the brat into the office to run around and scream bloody murder. Well, see, I agree with that.

It's the entitlement mentality which is why the whole meternity idea is stupid. Well, okay, not all, the notion that maternity leave is a fun vacation of joy is just licking the guano pile insane.

Hell, that's the issue with pretty much everything. No one minds helping out now and then and people get that kids get sick and hey have to see the stupid play and all of that. It's the but you must do this for me that grates.

Same thing with the shrieking ninnies about any type of public benefit. It's the notion that I *owe* anyone who isn't family support sets my teeth on edge. The hell I do. The hell I owe the money I make to anyone for whose care I am not directly responsible. Now, a valid argument can be made that it is in my best interest as a member of society to provide some measure of taxation to assist those in need in order to maintain safe community. Okay. Fine I can see that if I squint. But when that changes to I owe it to put food in someone else's mouth Because Whatever? Yeah. No.

As I said, I'm not really a good person.

My wife is home all day long with the girls. Right now, they're forgoing sleep during the day for cluster feeds, and crying in between. Basically, there is barely 5 minutes during the day in which she isn't soothing or feeding a fussy baby.

This pattern has continued into the nights, which is so much fun. Getting out of bed every other hour to change diapers and feed screaming babies; I haven't slept through the night in weeks, and I'm lucky when I get >4 hours of combined sleep on any given night.

Every word of this is true.

My husband traveled to his job in Chicago (we were in ATL) when our son was four days old. And he continued to commute every week for the next five years. In-laws lived 10 minutes away and never brought so much as a can of soup to me.

Anyhow, I survived...barely. A "vacation" it wasn't.

318 So, as the world's (certainly the Western world's) workforce continues to grey, as people live longer, as machines take-up an ever-larger percentage of the work that used to be done by carbon-based lifeforms, as productivity improvements reduce the number of carbon-based lifeforms needed to perform what work is left to be done...

... does this problem get worse? Or better?

My guess? Worse. Much, much worse.

Until a large-scale war wipes out lots and lots of carbon-based lifeforms, in which case the survivors get to start over, I suppose.

Which could be a feature, rather than a bug, of the current prevailing social philosophies, methinks.

Associates were expected to bill up the wazoo, and keep on top of a large case load.
Some weeks there would be "assignments" in Court or depositions that could only sustain a limited amount of client billing, and the paperwork would pile up.

Firm lore told of a young Associate who asked one of the Senior Partners if he could have more "in" days (non assignment days) so he could catch up with his work.

The Partner is said to have replied: "There are two 'in' days every week. They are called 'Saturday' and 'Sunday.'"

334 There was a Hong Kong movie made about 15 years ago called "Dummy Mommy, without a Baby." The heroine is an office worker and she is constantly annoyed at her coworkers who have children or are pregnant shirking all their tasks and unloading all their work on her since she is single and has no life, it doesn't help that she is a terrible incompetent and lazy worker who is about to get fired.

She then learns of a new government regulation making it illegal to fire a pregnant woman, so she fakes a pregnancy and milks it for all it is worth. This is played as a romantic comedy, but nobody learns anything from the experience. Our heroine is just as shallow and self absorbed at the end as she was at the beginning. Of course because she was rewarded every step of the way.

It isn't that great but the actress Miriam Yeung is fantastic, and the movie is so incredibly cynical. This actress made a specialty of this sort of thing.

A much better one was called "Love Undercover" in which she plays an incompetent policewoman who only got into and through the police academy because they needed to increase the number of women. She is then made a detective and infiltrates a triad where she promptly falls in love with a gangster. At this point it gets ridiculous. It is very very cynical and very funny and it would be dark as hell if it wasn't. The sequel is good to.

They made a lot of this "Bad Teacher" sort of thing in Hong Kong in the early 2000s a few years after Reunification. "Bad Teacher" itself completed reminded me of a movie called "Teaching Sucks" which has a young idealistic teacher outraged at his colleagues indifference until his spirit is broken, and that is the first five minutes, the rest of the movie is two male teachers pretending to be dedicated in a competition to seduce a new hire.

Sorry about that rambling mess, but these things become so unbearably stupid yet they tear down the morals of even societies destroyers in the end. I really do not believe that anywhere touched by modernity is going to be any better.

The Chinese are going to follow us straight down this road, India as well, in a few decades Russia will have some flower revolution and they will become as useless as Spain, and eventually everyone else will to. The only one's yelling stop and willing to do anything about it are the Islamists, but they are corrupt as anyone on the planet and even more hypocritical, plus they worship death which doesn't work all that well when it looks like you are winning.

In the end we will be in that horrible state Nietzsche predicted where everyone will not just claim God is dead, but that he never existed and they will genuinely believe it and act accordingly. No one will think there is any objective reality and the horror of that world will show some future generation that the Fall in the Garden was completely True.

My husband traveled to his job in Chicago (we were in ATL) when our son was four days old. And he continued to commute every week for the next five years. In-laws lived 10 minutes away and never brought so much as a can of soup to me.

Anyhow, I survived...barely. A "vacation" it wasn't.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at April 29, 2016 02:30 PM (FsuaD)

The hell? Did your husband know? Oh my good Lord.

Jane, I wish I could hug your neck and buy you an orangesicle milkshake, just for all the crap you have gone through with your in laws, much less for raising an awesome son and being an ette.

My inlaws are bad, but that absolutely takes the cake.

And yes, maternity leave is not a damn vacation. It's recovery from a medical procedure. The miracle of birth isn't always a miracle, and is sometimes nigh on deadly for a woman, and the baby. Stupid bint that wants a meternity needs a boot squarely up her keaster.

344 There was a movie a few years back based on a book by a retired NASA engineer who had grown up in a coal mining town and his conflict with his father who wanted his son to follow in his footsteps working in the mine rather than going to college.

One of the miners said to the young man,"I heard that mining doesen't suit you. Well it doesn't suit me either but I've been doing it for twenty years. "

He was not resentful about doing a job that he didn't like very much or that someone else had the opportunity to do something else. He just accepted it as his responsibility to keep doing it.

345 Ugh. I'm SO over all of the SJW "issues." These individuals are NOT feminists.

At the ripe age of 21 and at the humble height of 5'3", I broke into a male-dominated field and was the first woman ever hired into management by a company. THAT is feminism.

Several years later, after paying my dues and driving around in a POS that another division had already put a million miles on, the company finally got me a new vehicle. And then the sly comments began about who I had slept with to get a new vehicle.

Did I complain of a toxic workplace? Did I file a sexual harassment complaint? No! Because I knew that I had earned it and I didn't give a giant hoo-hah what anybody else thought.

A year or so later, a new GM pulls me into his office to ask if I have been passing information to the company's owner via pillowtalk. Now, in my opinion, this really crossed the line. Still, I merely raised my eyebrow at him as if to say 'that bullshit doesn't justify a response' and walked out of his office.

Fast forward a decade or so and a change of career later and I'm pregnant and working for a small company. I know that I have responsibilities to my employer and to my child. I explain to my employer that I intend to use the current year's vacation and the next year's vacation for my maternity leave and take an additional 2 weeks unpaid, but that I will be back in the saddle directly after that.

This is what adulthood looks like - you don't go whining about every damn thing. You don't assume that there is some colossal injustice at every turn with you cast as the victim. You own up to your responsibilities.

I know it would surprise this woman and a great many so-called adults these days, but feminism should not be about making some fictional playing field level, but about achieving against your own odds.

When I left my first job they replaced me with 5 men - that's how damn good I am. Screw their style of feminism, I earned my stripes the hard way. These "feminists" are wimps.

For the record, having a baby is hard work. But the suggestion that somehow those that have not yet spawned are somehow victimized by those that have...well, let's just say either they are pulling the victim card because that's apparently in vogue/habit OR they really ARE wimps. You can pitch in once in a while without being a victim - and if it really is becoming a problem in the workplace, there is recourse.

Gawd, I'm tired of all the children masquerading as adults. Why can't they pull up their big girl panties and deal?

If I worked at Salon; my every waking moment would be two things.

2) How can I continue to get paid enough to cover living expenses.

That someone AT Salon thinks this way isn't even a minor surprise to me.
I assumed they would, as I certainly would.
And I obviously extrapolate form one example to assume the opinion of humanity... just like everyone else obviously does (yes, that's a joke).

359 My dear Ace, this story warrants the level of outrage and insult you aimed at it, and then some. I have worked with such twits. They tend to coast on the accomplishments of others, insert themselves at the front of a parade, and claim exhaustion without ever exerting themselves. As a woman who has had three maternity leaves that included bare minimum time off, going into the office after my water broke because my expertise was needed, taking calls as I was being wheeled into the OR for a C-section, breastfeeding while on conference calls, and much, much more, all I can say is, FUCK HER.
