Quote of the Day I

Yale University President Peter Salovey solemnly addressed "the Yale community" by email in the early evening hours last night. He had a portentous announcement. Among other things, Yale has reached a decision on whether to retain the title "master" to refer to the teachers taking up the mantle at Yale's residential colleges. You can feel the brain cells sloughing off as you read the deliberation that went into taking the long way around to arrive at the wrong conclusion in the current fashion. It's the tribute that knowledge pays to ignorance.

-- Scott Johnson of PowerLine

Quote of the Day II

In fact, over the years, Mr. Gross has consistently asked one question of prospective employees: What drives you?

The twist is that they must pick one of three answers: money, power or fame.

Strangely to him, no one has ever picked fame.

"It is the one thing I have always wanted," he said. "When I was starting out at Pimco in 1972, I told my mother and father that I was going to become the most famous bond manager in the world."

If

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

    But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;

    If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

    And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

    And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

    If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And-which is more-you'll be a Man, my son!

Rudyard Kipling published this poem in 1910 and Ernest Shackleton already had a framed copy of it in the ship's library on his ill-fated expedition to the Antarctic in 1914.

Why the CT Judge Allowed the Sandy Hook Gun Lawsuit Against Remington to Go Forward

Discovery. And a chance to try out a new legal theory against gun companies.

As I have documented before, the law protects firearms manufacturers, but excepts cases where there is "negligent entrustment."  I recall thinking as I read this, "this is an oddball exception."  The reason that it is odd is that firearms manufacturers don't sell to customers.  They sell to distributors who then sell to stores (some manufacturers sell directly online, but go through a local FFL, e.g., Rock River Arms, LaRue Tactical, etc.).

They are thinking that this exception, the negligent entrustment clause, has not been tested in court and still need fleshing out as to its real definition.

Why Have High School Proms Become Such High Stakes Affairs?

All of which begs the question: Why are so many people treating the act of asking someone to prom like it's a wedding proposal? Watching these high schoolers' promposals is like taking a deep dive into those weird videos on YouTube of kids pretending to get married in fake weddings (yes, that's a thing). And it suggests that an increasing number of young people are so focused on the attention they get from asking someone to prom that they forget what the high school ritual is supposed to be about: having fun with your friends before you all grow up and have to face the real world. For kids who grew up online, maybe that's the point: there is no real world unless it's documented online. Promposal pics, or it didn't happen.

Here he is on the "Scots-Irish" so-called . . .

BORDERER FACTS:
1. Colonial opinion on the Borderers differed within a very narrow range: one Pennsylvanian writer called them 'the scum of two nations', another Anglican clergyman called them 'the scum of the universe'.
2. Some Borderers tried to come to America as indentured servants, but after Virginian planters got some experience with Borderers they refused to accept any more

It gets better.

Good god that's good jazz from a founding legend of the genre. Armstrong was a TV fixture in the 60s and I was shocked to learn that he'd been around in the 20s.

The biggest disappointment was Louis, who isn't in Kipling's stories (well, that I recall -- it's been years since I read it). He makes a point of describing himself as a Gigantopithecus, which is a long-extinct 9-foot tall species of orangutan. Still, Disney made him King Kong size.

The actor who plays Mowgli is terrific.

98 Thailand is the freakin' sex capital of the world, for some damn reason. Different countries and places specializes and are known for different things, and with Thailand it's the sex trade. Roundeye perverts of all stripes just dig their merchandise.

The place is the fucking Fantasy Island of sex. If you've got the money, and it does take that, you can call up a Mr. Rourke of sorts and he will set you up with whatever your perverted little mind desires.

Back in college, some buddies of mine developed that "Asian girl" fetish. Me, I never did. I mean, I could appreciate some very pretty instances of them, but never went that far. But I got to wondering and got to looking at some of the Thai girls, and I see they've got something, and I could very well see getting into them, though. I've never noticed it before.

Anyway, I read that they've always been in demand as the prettiest Asians.

113 Hmmm, so The Other Guy is mentioned, and That Execrable Woman is mentioned, and it's not like I want to mention You Know Who, but ...... that side-bar thing (no I didn't go read the Cost stuff) merits some kind of reaction.

If You Know Who is targeted by "Daisy" ads ...... which part of FEC regs and the constitution did I miss which prohibit You Know Who (and "unaffiliated" PACs, wink wink) from running 10 times as many devastating ads in response?

The "Daisy" concept - then and now - depends on a great deal of naivete and ignorance about US military operations and the formal/informal processes that shape decisions about those operations. Sadly this naivete is not limited to the great unwashed - one sees it rightcha here in these comment sections (mmm, and one post, actually).

Anyway, all the 3,294 different ways that presumably sophisticated observers are scrambling to find to say "I don't want You Know Who as the nominee" have long since started to seem ridiculous. Lots of reasons not to want You Know Who - no need to beclown yourselves with endless implausible or weakly argued hypotheticals about how his being the nominee might present challenges.

ANY nominee running against the Borg most of this country, and almost all of its public culture, have become will face a steep climb.

Might I humbly suggest that you get a pro up on that roof to take a look at it from the proper angle?

That which looks OK from the ground is often....very, very often, far more damaged than you might otherwise imagine.

Hail damage doesn't always look like OMG DESTRUCTION on a roof shingle. Could look like a mild dent from an errant golf ball. But those add up, and you might be entitled to a brand new roof via your insurance.

Get a Certain-Teed "Select Shingle Master Contrator", or a GAF "Premium" contractor out there. They'll inspect for free. They'll show you photos of what they find, and you can discuss any damage with them, in terms of presence, severity, and options for moving forward, or not.

But, get it looked at. Things look different up there, when seen from atop the roof, and not out on the sidewalk.

I wasn't thinking of FAME fame, I have always wanted not to have that. Much prefer to be anonymous in everyday life.

But "fame" in the profession - plaudits, awards, respect, etc. - yes. I choose that over money and certainly over power. That's how I was thinking of fame.

174 Mines. A small humorous anecdote. Took a management class. Foreign staff of US embassies, in US for humanitarian aid management training (I was a "student" mostly to learn stupid procedural stuff our office was mostly exempt from following - we had all sorts of emergency authorities/exemptions).

First day started off with a "not bad" video on Angola as a "complex emergency" (euphemism for ridiculous man-made catastrophes in places that should be richer than Singapore). Included (nearly fell out of my chair) the throwaway factoid that one of the few areas of the country free of mines was the strip that had been occupied by the evil South African military.

I jumped in right after the video ended. Explained that mines are only a problem when used improperly - no maps, no records, no strategy - and that the strip of southern Angola was a perfect example - South African army was professional and operated on western standards for things like use of mines. Added in the example of Normandy in WWII (more mines than Cambodia, cleared up without much trouble, and quickly).

American instructors were taken aback, quiet, clearly not pleased. Foreign staffers were fascinated, thanked me later, said they never had known that about mines and mine warfare.

Heh.

185 They'll sell their sons into it as well, as ladyboys. For roundeye perverts who are into the shemale, chicks with dicks thing, the Thai ladyboy is the cream of the crop of that.

They say a peasant boy from dirt poor surroundings can make more money as a ladyboy than anything else he could ever do by a long shot. He could keep up his whole damn family in a life of relative luxury compared to the dirt poor countryside.

And that's something else I wondered. Why Thai ladyboys? For some reason, Thai boys make good girls, just something about the stock. I don't know if I believe it, but I read that got started because of the high demand for Thai girls as prostitutes. Supply was running low, and some of these cutthroat ruthless pimping operations started just grabbing young boys, putting wigs and makeup on them, and using them.

And that caught on, some of the "customers" started really digging that, and so the ladyboy demand came into being.

Now, I just don't know about whole, "Hey, let's slap a wig on some boys and whore them out. Them drunks may not know the difference or even care...." I just don't know if anyone would really think that.

The woman card thing ticks me off. I've spent the last three weeks
watching The Tudors while laid up after knee surgery and if there's one
thing that's clear, it's that there has never been a better time to be a
woman than now. We should be celebrating....not complaining.
---
So, I'm a female who works in a non-traditional field, and have never been able to play the woman card. In fact, I was told point blank by my union steward that I couldn't get away with the things my male black co-worker could. Because he had the NAACP card. There are also men who screw you over at times and make you work harder, simply because you're a woman and they like to watch you struggle.

Not complaining about any of it; just giving another point of view. The woman card might work for some, but as far as I know, I've never been able to play it myself.

Now if I was a black Muslim transgender, well, I'd own the world.

190 SJWs hate Kipling for these reasons.
1. The Jungle Book stories about Mowgli are all about what makes society-especially premodern society-work out. No fluffy morals or easily co-opted Disney princess stories here. The tiger is a tyrannical killer, the monkeys are idiots, wild dogs are Mongols, Kaa is a bastard, a golden treasure brings death, villagers are suspicious, and girls have a power over boys. (The wolves were cool though.)
2. Ricky-Ticky-Tavy, sell-out defender of colonials.
3. It's a WHITE seal!!! WHITE seals can't end oppression, genocide, or find safe zones!
4. The Mugger of Mugger Ghaut: everything about every Asian dictator ever in one parable of a tale. Illuminating and edifying if one is not John Kerry.
5. "If" What does that poem have to do with establishing a multicultural welfare state?
6. No poems that make soldiers and soldiering sympathetic, they don't want that.
7. "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" They pretend very hard not to understand it.

"Listen, man-cub," said the Bear, and his voice rumbled like thunder on a hot night. "I have taught thee all the Law of the Jungle for all the peoples of the jungle - except the Monkey-Folk who live in the trees. They have no law. They are outcasts. They have no speech of their own, but use the stolen words which they overhear when they listen, and peep, and wait up above in the branches. Their way is not our way. They are without leaders. They have no remembrance. They boast and chatter and pretend that they are a great people about to do great affairs in the jungle, but the falling of a nut turns their minds to laughter and all is forgotten. We of the jungle have no dealings with them. We do not drink where the monkeys drink; we do not go where the monkeys go; we do not hunt where they hunt; we do not die where they die. Hast thou ever heard me speak of the Bandar-log till today?"

"No," said Mowgli in a whisper, for the forest was very still now Baloo had finished.

"The Jungle-People put them out of their mouths and out of their minds. They are very many, evil, dirty, shameless, and they desire, if they have any fixed desire, to be noticed by the Jungle People. But we do not notice them even when they throw nuts and filth on our heads."

He had hardly spoken when a shower of nuts and twigs spattered down through the branches; and they could hear coughings and howlings and angry jumpings high up in the air among the thin branches.

"The Monkey-People are forbidden," said Baloo, "forbidden to the Jungle-People. Remember."

237 Fame without money or power is only 15 minutes long.
Fame without power depends on the favor of Caesar.
Fame with power but not money is the name of a conqueror.

Money without fame or power is a sheep ready for shearing.
Money with fame but no power is ready for a second marriage.
Money with power but no fame is the banker to the rich and famous.

Power without fame or money is ready to acquire both.
Power with fame but not money is running a budget deficit.
Power with money but not fame is abiding its time in the spotlight.

guessing Cruz is a no-starter on the issue but since he chose carly as his vp candidate I am less sure about that since she looks like she either helped build em, lives in em or both.

bernie would probably go for it but he looks a little averse to manual labor and he is going to want to pay the egyptians $15 an hour which is going to blow my model all to hell.

donald is going to go for it but my concern with him is that in the reassembly he is going to want to put hotel rooms in them, that and his build quality is not high.

283 "What's wrong with Windows 10?"

Driver support deficiencies. It'll say cheerily "your system is compatible" when it may not necessarily be, and where upgrading will break it to the point of unusability.

A ton of "phone home" telemetry reporting back to Redmond in detail on everything you do with your computer. The privacy angle notwithstanding, this also chews up bandwidth and slams people into network usage totals. You can disable this stuff, apparently, but they can also apparently easily re-enable it with updates.

It makes your machine into a redistribution node for W10 binaries. So Microsoft end up benefiting from bandwidth you paid for, instead of paying to scale up their own server farms.

You give up control over which updates get downloaded and installed, and having such control has been the only thing in the past that has stopped certain toxic Windows updates from wreaking havoc on users.

Whose career nearly exploded on the launch pad with that film.

The producers in London saw the early rushes and thought Caine's performance was awful. They sent word down to the location set in South Africa to fire him.

But with the slow speed of communication between the UK and Kwazulu-Natal back in the day, by the time the field production crew heard the orders from home base, they had too much film in the can to plausibly replace Caine.

316 Curse you!

Due to your post about Miley Cyrus's Jupiturn tattoo, I eventually found myself looking at her actual Instagram feed.

A billion puppies in my soul died. Civilizations crumbled to dust. All those angels on the head of that pin stopped dancing and started raping each other. Satan farted. Chocolate suddenly tasted like Drano. And Kierkegaard was finally proven right: Life is meaningless.

Yes, that is just how stupid, ignorant, vapid and yet immensely powerful and influential Miley Cyrus is. Beyond any human comprehension, but in the negative dimension, she is like anti-God.

Download the license terms, enlarge the print, and look at 'em. Microsoft will own anything you say or do using Windows 10. They'll own your creations, they'll own your secrets, they'll own your metadata, your rolodex, and your browsing history. Take a picture on your camera, upload it into your Pictures directory -- they can use it in their advertising, royalty free. It doesn't "feel" any different. The telemetry has been widely lied about. Those who've actually looked into it have found the amount of information quite minor and nearly all related to technical matters, like crash reports and installation failures. The types of stuff that gets red icons in Event Viewer.

The local sharing of update is easily disabled and takes some doing to actually make it work. If you have a business with a lot of PCs but not large enough to justify having your own update server, it will SAVE you a lot of bandwidth usage. I know of several such business who cannot decent broadband connections for who this would be very useful.

There is also a setting, introduced with Windows 8, intended for those using a cellular hotspot or other type of metered connection that lets you limit when downloads will take place. This is especially important for mobile users relying on cellular WAN accounts part of the time. It's the equivalent of how Android devices will typically wait for a WiFi connection before downloading updates above a certain size. (I know iOS has similar functions but I haven't enough direct contact with recent version to speak of the level of control.)

It's not what they're doing with it now, as they're forcing everyone onto it....it's what the license terms allow after everyone is stuck. I have one toy that runs Android so I could see how it worked -- it has no access to my identity, my finances, or anything else useful. No, it's not going to try. Vista is not a upgrade candidate for Windows 10. Although any machine that shipped with Vista will probably work alright. I had no problem installing the preview of 10 on a Core 2 Duo machine I originally built to run vista when it was in beta. It needed a BIOS update to switch to 64-bit and eventually was upgraded to 6 GB from the original 2 GB. (It was a choice between 8 GB of PC5300 and 6 GB of PC6400 due to bandwidth limits of the memory channels in that chip set generation.)

The main source of problems would the traditional lack of ongoing OEM support for a hardware item. For example, a lot of machines from the late XP era to the early Win7 era used a Ricoh chip for implementing a SD card slot. Ricoh dropped support for the chip before Windows 7 but the existing driver did work initially and a lot of PC makers kept using it. But by the time of Win7 SP1 there were security holes patched that showed the driver wasn't properly coded and could no longer run. So it really became an issue for Windows 8 but since it was Windows 10 that was the free upgrade it was more recently that many became aware of Ricoh abandoning support for the chip. There isn't anything Microsoft can do if Ricoh doesn't want to share the necessary info privately or open source it.

The funny thing is that Bill essentially invented the concept of selling a computer program -- when he showed up with his BASIC implementation at the Homebrew Computer Club, people said, "yeah, I'll take a copy" and were astounded when he wanted to charge for it.....

And, now, the idea that "when you charge for something, you own it" is taking a header. If you want to buy an OS, Win 10 suggests that you should have no control over what it does to you. It can sell your info to the highest bidder, copy your work, spy on your relationships.....it might be different if Microsoft paid you $200 to use their OS, but to say that Win 10 is so damned good you have to lay out cash AND take it up the ass to use it is pretty arrogant.

Microsoft has shown its willingness to consign every machine into the wilderlands of unsupport or the mandatory hell of overarching OS licensing. Any Microsoft OS with halfway reasonable licensing is on a deathwatch.

My sometime employer does lengthy and complex documents for proposal bids to various levels of government for communications planning. I'm usually only peripherally involved in these as I'm not an RF and Telco guy but every year they experiment with the lower cost alternatives to Office for creating these documents and they always end going back to Office because those alternative falls down badly on the big stuff.

Who made the machine? If it was a big brand still in business the update should be on their site. If it was a white box system, either from a small shop or DIY, with an identifiable motherboard make and model, look on the motherboard maker's site. Some brands, like ASUS, have utilities you can run that will examine the machine and tell you if they have a newer version for the BIOS or drivers.

In the case of the machine I mentioned above, I built it myself with an Intel motherboard, so the updates weren't a problem. Before they got out of the retail motherboard business, the Intel boards were very good for everything just working. They wouldn't have exciting whizbang features to appeal to the overclockers and such but those can be a real source of problem if you aren't intending to use them. A lot of people building a system for themselves will buy too much motherboard and discover the high end features don't do anything useful for them and complicate matters when there is a problem to be solved.

If I was gathering parts for a new build tomorrow, I'd almost certainly get a Z170 board but not an especially high end one. I want the full Intel platform spec but unless I know I'm going to build a monster hot rod or upgrade that way later, it would be both a waste of money and source of potential problems. I'd want an PCIe x4 M.2 slot but I wouldn't be concerned with SLI or Crossfire, and especially not a triple or quadruple GPU setup. Perhaps if I won the lottery and was doing it as an idle rich hobby.

Miley Cyrus is 23. She has a lot of money. She appears to be a shallow, narcissistic young woman in need of spiritual and emotional healing

One of American greatest theologians, Jonathan Edwards born 1703 (If it's not Edwards it's Reinhold Niebuhr, but I'll go with Edwards) entered Yale at age 14 got his Master's degree from Yale at age 19. He had to deliver his thesis in Latin and then defend it in Latin to a group of Academics in order to get his degree. He is one of the most prolific theologians ever and also had a family and 11 children. He went on to become the President of Princeton University long before it became a hotbed of SJW. He died in the early 50s, I believe of smallpox

I wouldn't be surprised if Miley Cyrus dies of a drug overdose by the time she's thirty and nobody recalls hers music 15 year from now. I feel sorry for her .

Absolutely. Although I am not doing so at the moment, I used to dual boot with a Linux OS. I'm no fan of Win10. I am currently running an unsupported Win OS, and will likely move up to Win7 before too long. When the time comes that MS stops supporting Win7, I will likely setup that OS as a virtual one with some form of Linux. But, that is a few years off, so other alternatives could present themselves before then.

I do like using open source software, and my dabbling with GIMP has been from within Windows.

The alternatives to MS Office are not quite up to snuff, either. Most of the Open Office suite I could get by with, but the Access replacement was horrendous. Databases that worked in Access would just not convert properly to [whatever they call the db program in Open Office]. And, last I looked, nobody has come close to coming up with a replacement for Outlook. Thunderbird isn't horrible, but it just isn't Outlook.

There's all sorts of telemetry. Document it openly and honestly and allow the user to configure it, and I have no problem. My firewall stops 256 outgoing connections every 2-3 days (it hits 256 and does a dump). They didn't ask me to communicate or tell me what would be said, so they hit the default block....and, yet, my system works fine.

No, Bill Gates did not invent the idea of selling software. He just brought it up among a group that was composed almost entirely of DIY types who hadn't really thought ahead yet to where the micro computer was heading. It was already an established business on large systems. One of the core issues of the anti-trust action against IBM was access to the platform by companies not part of IBM or working through them. IBM operated a lot like a game console company in regards to controlling what was offered to buyers of their systems, aside from software developed by those customers for internal use.

Much of DEC's rise came from being much friendlier to outsiders seeking to get in on the software action. Rather than trying to own everything, they saw the wisdom of allowing an army of independent developers to allow DEC to match IBM's resources while focusing on their hardware business. Apple understood this early on but it took Atari a few critical years to get a clue. TI had a similar attitude. Atari published Chris Crawford's 'De Re Atari' and let their employees go on trips to evangelize their superior hardware capabilities but this wasn't enough to overcome the problems of the managers Warner Comm. had installed. They just didn't get it and they critical time when Atari's inhouse advantages could be realize was squandered. The doom was already in place before the first Atari computers shipped. Nolan Bushnell wanted to have open expandable machines, like the Apple II but with far better video and audio functionality. Warner insisted on a closed box and the best features kept secret. Bushnell gave up in frustration and left, signing a non-compete contract in exchange for a pile of cash.

Came upon a movie called Saved by Grace - watched it with some trepidation, afraid it would get too treacly or preachy or contrived, as some spiritually-minded dramas can. It turned out okay. Watched it again the next day with Milady, thinking I could check the emotions better, but got dusty-eyed all over again.

Also, about half-way through checking out Risen. Impressive. Think I'll back up to the start and watch it with Milady. ... Always hard to watch Him (well, anyone, but especially Him), crucified. Film got the gruesome crucifixion details right, mostly, though. One question - didn't the spear go in on the right (heart) side? Shown going in from the left. I'll have to check the Shroud....

Time to give up on this day, and try another one, God willing. Thank your angels - they have to put up with us!

Like many others, she has learned the lesson from Madonna: slut it up and you can get some attention to your work. What she and most others failed to realize (or at least emulate) is that Madonna was also doing some interesting things musically, so even if she got the initial attention by acting slutty, there was something more substantial that kept people interested.

They know, there just isn't much to be done about it. The numbers just aren't there for many developers to see the ROI. A lot of indies do it just because they feel like and have the freedom to make such choices but they'll ship the Windows version first to get the revenue happening and may cancel the ports if it doesn't go well.

This extends into the console business. A developer might have a relationship with a console maker that gives them first dibs on a new title but when that isn't a factor the installed base is the 800 pound gorilla. For a typical indie that doesn't push the hardware very much, the PS4 and Xbox One are nearly identical machines at the hardware level. The infrastructure for online services may also be a factor but a small dev looking to break even ASAP on the sunk costs of a project is likely to favor completing the PS4 version first just because it has a bit over twice the installed base globally. (The difference is a lot narrower if you're initially just targeting North America and far wider if you're targeting Asia.)

Most games are considered successful if they reach 5% of the target market. This is why 20 million installed base is a big deal in consoles because that gives you a million likely customers for a run of the mill success. Obviously, the platform that doubles that is going to draw more interest, unless there is some special audience interest cluster on a particular machine. Nintendo can make big money on a game because they can see a 50% or better attach rate, even if the total market on that machine is dismal from a third party dev's perspective.

If anybody is making serious money on selling a game to Linux users, they're in a very small club. They're biggest hope for such ports is if SteamOS machines achieve a really substantial installed base of people who don't really think about the OS under the UI. One avenue that could hold out some hope are the people who prefer the genres that are severely underserved on consoles but find dealing with PC gaming bewildering and want a turnkey experience.

It was kind of expected when he departed. That stock was the primary basis of how Warner Comm. bought his controlling stake in Atari. Under such circumstances it's common for the departing exec to divest. Bushnell couldn't see the crash coming in 1982 but he knew Atari individually was not going to be the dominant player in the home computer and video game market if Warner insisted on their doomed policies. Ray Kassar, who really ran the company into the ground, wasn't a factor until after Bushnell. He was the exec installed by Warner who notoriously regarded game designers as no more than the equivalent of 'towel designers' (Kassar had spent most of his career before then in the textile field.) who merited no credit for their work in the game's title screen or packaging. These programmers were making incredible money but it wasn't an environment conducive to making creative people feel appreciated.

On our local Gun Forum, someone suggested simply banning "Replica Parents".

454 Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, April 29, 2016. On this day in 1992 we had the forerunner of the hands up don't shoot Michael Brown press outrageous lies and liberal propaganda resulting in riots event. There were riots in Los Angeles, following the acquittal of police officers charged with excessive force in the beating of Rodney King. Over the next three days 53 people were killed and hundreds of buildings were destroyed. These riots were the direct outgrowth of the edited beating of King that was shown on TV news over and over. The video made it look like the police beat King for no reason at all. The jury saw the entire unedited video that showed he started the fight with the cops and that is why they acquitted. The press should have been charged for these riots and the riots over the Michael Brown shooting. And on that last one Obama and Holder should have been charged too.

Bachelor's Degrees could then be changed to I Live in the Basement with Cats and $100k in Student Loans I Have No Hope of Ever Repaying Because I Majored in Grievance Studies-Degrees.

Perhaps the anguish felt at these Mental Institutions of Higher Learning might be better focused on ending actual current slavery, such as Muslim slavers in ISIS Africa.

Scankles was behind the original push for the government to take over airport screening when she was a Senator in NY. That push, although stopped at the time, never went away. 496 Katy Waldman is two things I am mystified by: she was an English major in college and she went to Yale. There is literally no purpose for an English major beyond teaching English or Literature to others, and Yale itself is obviously a place of great dislocation from society, even mental illness on an institutional scale.

A self-hating intellectual English major might refer to a great writer in print as a "racist fuck", but would anyone else? This woman is white, and she hates that she is so unfashionable, she is a writer, and yet she can't actually create anything anyone wants to read, and she is young, so she is impatient and easily loses focus. She is seriously out of sorts with the world.

In the revolution to come, when America gets pretty savage in beating down the upper classes who have led us to moral and political bankruptcy, Yale is one place I hoe doesn't survive intact. The faculty needs to be disrupted, the students need to go away for a few years, the place needs to be emptied and it should do it's best to forget it's history. It needs to start over, and do education better this time.

"No more Katy Waldman's" is probably too lofty a goal, I suppose, but it's worth trying for! Maybe Yale should try to only produce engineers and physicists for awhile. Leave the English to UConn or whatev. Maybe that will help.

A better solution is cease all public funding for colleges and make them survive on tuition alone. And since SCOTUS said government scholarships were considered "funding" end that too.

Hah! I remember when the Amalgamated Baggage Screeners of America were all private contractors working for minimum wage and the argument was that government had to take over the process of screening airline baggage and passengers because private business had failed to protect the air traveler and that only highly qualified government employees hiring only highly qualified candidates who would go through a very through government run training program that would be administered by highly talented highly paid government services employees who would be in the union would protect the air traveler far better than the slubs hired by for profit greedy capitalists.

So now you are telling us that fat cat government politicos who are making security decisions based on politics rather than security, who are administering security operates based on political ideology don't do any better job than minimum wage contractors? So why are we paying those government union employees above average wages for below average performance?

513 506 Do it at the State level I can agree with though.

Well the University of SC was founded here in 1801 as a State supported school, as were most of the original public colleges. However, it is long overdue to stop all public funding of these liberal hells and let them sink or swim on their own.

We have one semi-conservative college left in the State (Wofford) and it is a private school. It may get some public funding but I surmise that it is not much. It is expensive as hell and IIANM there is a waiting list to get in.

514 Sometimes it takes a while to be proven right. In 2000, wifey and I bought a house in a flood zone. In 2001 AND 2002, water was lapping at our front step; I said "That's it." and sold it and we moved.

Surprisingly, it didn't flood from Katrina in 2005; but yesterday it did. They had to go in by boat to rescue the neighborhood.

.It won't end well for him. Most people with severe untreated NPD drink themselves to death or try to commit suicide some other way.

Of course if Trump wins the election the MSM will keep obama in the spotlight for the next 4-8 years critiquing every single decision and statement Trump makes so there is that going for him.

516 I saw The Jungle Book. I recommend it highly.

Lately Disney has been shoving LGBTWTFBBQ crap into their movies. The 'rainbow bridge', in Cars 2, for example. I'm curious whether they managed to insert some gay messaging into Jungle Book...which I'd really like to take the kids to see.

517 Katy Waldman is two things I am mystified by: she was an English major in college and she went to Yale. There is literally no purpose for an English major beyond teaching English or Literature to others, and Yale itself is obviously a place of great dislocation from society, even mental illness on an institutional scale.

Back in the old days when liberal arts were the most prestigious part of a university (yes, that time existed), it would let you become more cultured. There also wasn't much of a point to learning a more practical area, as a university would be far more filled with upper class scions...Yeah, I know, but that was much more the case in the early 20th century.

However, since this isn't the early 20th century, it can also let you pad your GPA while still dicking around and still getting a decent job/grad school from a place like that.

518 'The president told a group of college journalists Thursday that his record on the economy is among his proudest achievements.'

519 Vic probably linked the Fox story on the 20 arrests of shitheads in Costa Mesa after a Trump rally, vandalizing cars and attacking drivers as they left. Leftist projection is going to reach the ludicrous this election time, as they exercise their racism, their sexism, their close-mindedness and any other social ill they can think of.

I really liked this one comment from an attendee:

Ly Kou, 47, of Ontario, said she likes Trump because he has vowed to put the country first.

"It's obvious that America loves Trump," said Kou, who is from Laos, as she pointed at the waiting throng. "This thing about him being racist? Look around the crowd."

520 The president also urged the budding journalists to write 'good stories' about the government, using his administration as an example.

521 Another thanks from an American expat Moron for my "first thing in the morning" post.... Herr Maetenloch, Ich schätze sehr viel Arbeit, so nur, dass Sie wissen....richtig, danke,,,,
And thank God for the written spirit of Kipling:

"If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew to serve your turn long after they are gone, and so hold on when there is nothing in you except the will which says to them: 'Hold on!' "

Best regards from the front.....

522 When colleges have to make ends meet through their
own devices as was the normal up until more recent times a lot of this
stupid shit will go away.

Exactly.

And with market forces brought to bear, tuition would rapidly return to some sane place. Of course that is assuming that government loan guarantees are also considered funding.

523 Well, off to work, where the guys who mistype data and code think you're the stupid one who can't do things right.

"Yeah, those were just momentary mistakes. We know what we are doing, you don't."

Well, no, not really. The program is too complex not to be anal about these sort of things. A pilot who forgets to extend the landing gear on landing is not a momentary mistake pilot, he is a bad pilot. And if he is acting towards others like he is flawless, and they are morons, then he is a jackass as well. If nothing else, his Crew Resource Management skills are atrocious.

The number one lesson I take from Ronald Reagan right now? "PATCO"--No matter how essential they are, if they are doing something they ought not, you fire them.

I don't think there is anything I can add to that.

525 "Tenure" is a pernicious idea, that's for sure. It's morally bankrupt too, after Marquette's pomposity and firing of a conservative tenured professor for mildly criticizing a contract teacher for her BS fascism in class.

Posted by: MTF at April 29, 2016 07:26 AM (/m8T6)

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at April 29, 2016 07:21 AM (Zu3d9)

Back when there was still a fight over the unconstitutionality of Title IX SCOTUS ruled that it was funding and therefore opened the doors for government intervention in colleges. That case involved a private college which got no direct federal aid. (That being the cause for the government to intervene in all public schools despite there being no authority in the Constitution).

I thought it was the loans themselves, and not the guarantees that the gov. gives to banks.

Regardless, the best thing for higher education in America would be for the feds to get the hell out of it.

One argument for continued involvement is support for basic research. Things like LBL produce valuable stuff.

531 Some lies do last forever, the ones that change the language.

The wholly fraudulent concept of "hate speech" has been peddled only in the last 10 years or so.

It is now enshrined, in the popular culture as a bedrock principle of law and philosophy, to the effect that something, somebody deems "demeaning" to a group is not speech, but a violent act so unspeakably vile that the State can (and should) prohibiit it outright.

"PC" no longer does justice to the lies and thought control of the left.
