Quote of the Day I - Because Attackers Like Have Rights Man Edition

The main problem with the notion of self-defense is it imposes on justice, for everyone has the right for a fair trial. Therefore, using a firearm to defend oneself is not legal because if the attacker is killed, he or she is devoid of his or her rights.

-- Justin Cormi in the Huffington Post which apparently does not have a drug testing policy

Quote of the Day II

In June 1893, nine cowboys raced across a thousand miles of American prairie to the Chicago World's Fair. For two weeks they thundered past angry sheriffs, governors, and Humane Society inspectors intent on halting their race. Waiting for them at the finish line was Buffalo Bill Cody, who had set up his Wild West Show right next to the World's Fair that had refused to allow his exhibition at the fair.

The Great Cowboy Race occurred at a pivotal moment in our nation's history: many believed the frontier was settled and the West was no more. The Chicago World's Fair represented the triumph of modernity and the end of the cowboy age. Except no one told the cowboys. Racing toward Buffalo Bill Cody and the gold-plated Colt revolver he promised to the first to reach his arena, nine men went on a Wild West stampede from tiny Chadron, Nebraska, to bustling Chicago. But at the first thud of hooves pounding on Chicago's brick pavement, the race devolved into chaos. Some of the cowboys shipped their horses part of the way by rail, or hired private buggies. One had the unfair advantage of having helped plan the route map in the first place. It took three days, numerous allegations, and a good old Western showdown to sort out who was first to Chicago, and who won the Great Cowboy Race.

-- from a review of American Endurance: The Great Cowboy Race and the Vanishing Wild West

Quote of the Day III

We're told although Prince hired and fired a slew of professionals, his most trusted advisers were "beautiful, 20-something women, all models with no experience in anything." It caused chaos in his life ... especially in the financial department.

-- from a TMZ article on Prince's lack of a will

Quote of the Day IV - Superfluous Masculinity Edition

The Turner prize-winning artist has turned his sights on the survivalist [Bear Grylls] and his exceptionally rugged version of masculinity, arguing that it isn't fit for the 21st century. "He celebrates a masculinity that is useless," [Grayson ] Perry said. Perry said that the masculine ideal presented by shows such as The Island, in which Grylls is currently putting a third group of hapless contestants through survivalist hell, is making it harder for men to successfully negotiate modern life. "Men might be good at taking the risk of stabbing someone or driving a car very fast, but when it comes to opening up, men are useless," Perry told the Radio Times in an interview to promote his new series, All Man.

Note that Grayson Perry's interests include pottery, writing, opening up emotionally along with the occasional transvestism.

New Feminist Factoid: Female Soccer Players Only Get Paid 60% of What Male Players Do

Status: False.

But data released last week by the U.S. Soccer Federation show that the top women's players make nearly as much as the highest-paid men's players. Since 2008, six national-team men and six women have earned more than $1 million from the Federation. And according to ESPN, 14 of the 25 highest-earning national-team players over the past four years have been women, whose compensation averaged $695,269. That's 2.2% below the average for men. Women also receive benefits that men don't, including maternity leave and severance pay if they get cut from the team. Women get paid if they're sidelined with an injury; men don't.

Women on the U.S. national soccer teams aren't paid less than men. They're paid differently because the collective-bargaining agreements they have negotiated emphasize income- and job-security. Women players earn annual salaries of $72,000; the men get paid by how many games they play. The men's roster is more fluid, and the head coach can call players to camp for one game.

Nearly 50 men's players appeared in games for the U.S. national squad last year, but only three played more than 13 games. The women's team fields about half as many players.

So many teenagers are seeking cosmetic surgery to trim or shape the external genitalia that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued guidance from its Committee on Adolescent Health Care to doctors last week, urging them to teach and to reassure patients, suggest alternatives to surgery that may alleviate discomfort, and screen them for a psychiatric disorder that causes obsession about perceived physical defects.

Crucially, though, all prior research has utilized explicit reports of satisfaction, which reflect deliberative processes that may override the more automatic implications of phylogenetically older evolved preferences. Accordingly, capturing the implications of sexual frequency for relationship evaluations may require implicit measurements that bypass deliberative reasoning. Consistent with this idea, one cross-sectional and one 3-year study of newlywed couples revealed a positive association between sexual frequency and automatic partner evaluations but not explicit satisfaction. These findings highlight the importance of automatic measurements to understanding interpersonal relationships.

81 The first quote is not even wrong.

A fair trial ensures that those accused of a crime have a chance to defend themselves before being punished by the state, which wasn't present at the original offense. The right to self-defense ensures that those present at the crime are able to prevent harm to themselves.

If a thug breaks into my house and I catch him in my living room, I may shoot him if I feel that I was threatened. I may not shoot him in the back as he's running away. I may not track him down hours or days later and kill him in revenge. The right to self-defense and the right to a fair trail go hand in hand, in that the State acknowledges that it is not omniscient and so must grant the accused benefit of doubt.

As this 30% were those willing to fight... ie the Warriors, it may have very well paved the way for the French Revolution.... because the Aristocracy was genetically weaker.

118 I've got an 1890s cowboy story too.

In 1897 for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee parade, every country/colony in the British Empire sent military contingents to march in the parade.

The officer in charge of the contingent from the North-West Mounted Police decided that instead of wearing their full-dress uniforms that they would wear their workday uniforms instead. So when they appeared in simple uniforms contrasted with the finery of the other contingents like Indian units covered in gold or silver lace, they looked like real hard-asses. And that started the trend of Mountie adventure fiction; and the Yukon gold rush was around the same time so that probably helped too.

169 "Bite The Bullet" is a spectacular western of a 700 mile horse race across America. Gene Hackman at his best. James Coburn as his buddy and competition. Jan Michael Vincent as a young punk who learns his lesson by the end. And the late, great Ben Johnson who just wants to win, get his name in the papers and "be somebody" Someone actually does bite the bullet to relieve a toothache.

Posted by: concrete girl at April 27, 2016 11:48 PM

It's a really good, under rated movie. My only gripe is the raid? sub plot that is she horned in. The story didn't need it. Other than that, it's great. The race leader having to to shoot his beloved horse is heartbreaking. Well done with no schmaltz to the scene.

I read that I want to say, well, hell, this porn thing is getting out of hand, and I ought to be ashamed of myself for adding to demand for something that makes impressionable young girls actually think they have to conform.

But then, naw, most of this stuff, women do to themselves. It's other women who are actually the ones who cruelly enforce standards like this.

I mean, has any dude here, actually turned a girl down because, hey your pussy is just ugly, I mean I can't even... I mean there are edge cases, things so extreme that occur only in some small percentage, but even then, would you actually say that, tell a women something like that? Hell to the fucking no.

For a while in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Tommy Lasorda, of all people, had a small chain of restaurants called, of course, LaSorda's. Lakewood had a location.

To this day I remember their buffalo wings. I don't know what they put on them, but OMG it was sooooo good. It wasn't like other buffalo sauces... it had a heartiness and flavor that went way beyond anything I've ever found anywhere else. In the meantime, about 1995 the chain closed its doors.

Still wish I could get that recipe. I've even thought of writing Tommy himself.

It's like getting a ride through Uber - the license plate can be different each time because it's a different car.

But some people can afford their own car and thus keep the same plate number.

250 MRS. Grayson Perry is a psychotherapist who has penned a monograph, Why Children Kill Their Parents. I don't care how incomprehensible the text is, the title alone speaks eloquent volumes. Google up a picture of the two of them together, and you'll understand a great deal. They have a lovely daughter, aged four-and-twenty, and I suppose anyone here would knock the bottom out of that just to see the look on "his" face. And nothing to worry about eye-ther, as there's no chance he'll stab you or run you down.

I won't mock the craft of pottery. Pottery is useful, and men may do it. What Sir Grayson (oh, yes) does is "decorative porcelain," and Delft, it ain't. Looks like he'd pronounce it 'SAIR-a-mix,' like Bogie with his hat brim flipped up.

Well, once everything stops supporting IPv4 and switches to IPv6, that should solve it. IPv4 has billions of addresses and wasted a lot of them with classing. IPv6 is classless and has something like 340 undecillion addresses. If it ever runs out, I will be truly impressed.

281 The Turner prize-winning artist has turned his sights on the survivalist [Bear Grylls] and his exceptionally rugged version of masculinity, arguing that it isn't fit for the 21st century.

When the USA goes full Venezuela and money is short, especially to pay the chattering class, those skills that Perry calls "useless" will be mighty useful in depriving Perry of whatever assets he has on his person, and the only opening up that will matter is his wallet.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at April 28, 2016 12:20 AM (w/iDp)

Yeah. My hash changed after the shutdown last night here in sunny Alberta.

I have been in Suburban-mending mode the last few days. Repairing last November's rear-ender damage to the '08, and today I borrowed the alternator off the wounded '96 to enable me to complete the water pump replacement on the '97. Got that one up and running; no leaks, and alternator is charging up a storm, so it's all good.

The vapor recovery (charcoal) canister on the rear of the '08 took damage when it was hit last November, and half the charcoal pellets (look like black mouse turds) fell out the hole. I had gotten another canister Monday when I picked up a used rear window from the auto wreckers. But the new canister was smaller, and had the pipe nipples in the wrong places, plus it didn't fit the bracket at all. So I figured, "What the heck!", and sawed the new canister open, and recovered the charcoal pellets. Enough to completely fill a 2# coffee can. The chamber which had emptied had a spring-loaded baffle, almost like a piston, in it to keep the granules bunched up so they wouldn't rattle or channelize (and the canister I cut open was similarly equipped). I rigged a string through a hole to tie that baffle back and compress the spring. The I used sheets of plastic from the "donor" canister to mend the damaged one, doing my main fastening with pop rivets, and sealing the seams by "plastic welding" with a heated nail. With the damage all repaired, I then used a hole saw to make one small hole, and filled the chamber with charcoal pellets using a funnel. Then I welded a cap over the fill hole. Then I untied the string, letting the baffle push against the pellet charge, and fished the string out, and welded up the hole. The unit is now back on the truck, and other than looking funny, ought to work as well as ever.

And a big bonus on Monday, too. While tracking down a rear glass at the auto wreckers, I did a search for "2008 Suburban rear window" on Kijiji, a Canadian classified site comparable to Craiglist. No rear windows, but I did find an ad for "rear interior door panels". Mine had been missing since I bought the truck, and ex-RCMP rig. I called the number, and he still had them, 2 sets, with hardware. Timing was right. he had them in his truck, and was going to haul them for scrap. So I bought both sets. "By the way, I have the consoles, too." So I got one of them, too. I asked, "how did you come to have all these parts?" "I used to prepare vehicles for the RCMP." Heh. The panels I installed yesterday quite possibly came out of the very truck I put them back into. And fifty bucks got me both pairs of panels and the console. Got all that stuff put in yesterday. Even installed a pair of speakers. And the power window switches, which I thought were gone, turned out to be tie-wrapped to a harness in side the door, out of sight. So the interior of the '08 is now back to factory, with all functions working.

But I didn't really keep up with it after passing so I'm having to do a lot of review of the 5 material. I'm also finding that JLPT 4 has a lot more vocabulary and kanji than 5 - but I'm pretty good at memorization so it's just a matter of plowing through it.

No odor at all. some dust commingled with the charcoal, but the portion of it I used was pretty clean. Yeah rattles are reduced. And I got rid of two BIG clunks. While doing interior cleaning/detailing last weekend (got enough dog hair to knit a whole new dog), I took the interior skins off the "C" pillars. Sure enough, the rear shoulder belts were dangling inside the pillars, with the male buckle tab and floor anchor able to clank against metal at every opportunity. So I got them sorted out, and now I have full seat belt functionality, too. And two less clunks.Did you see I found another MGB, but this time with Webbers!? lol

360 rhomboid, not sure. I recall reading that at least two of the members of America were American, but the sons of Air Force personnel stationed in England.

I like the song Ventura Highway too, just the name reminds me of travels up/down the freeways when my family would go camping, when I was between the ages of 6 and 17.

Here's the lyrics of the song, from Google:

Chewing on a piece of grass
Walking down the road
Tell me, how long you gonna stay here Joe?
Some people say this town don't look
Good in snow
You don't care, I know

Ventura Highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger
Than moonshine
You're gonna go I know

'Cause the free wind is blowin' through
Your hair
And the days surround your daylight
There
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air

Wishin' on a falling star
Watchin' for the early train
Sorry boy, but I've been hit by
Purple rain
Aw, come on Joe, you can always
Change your name
Thanks a lot son, just the same

Ventura Highway
In the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger
Than moonshine
You're gonna go I know

'Cause the free wind is blowin' through
Your hair
And the days surround you daylight
There
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air

Mindful: Your inspirational phrases are One More Reason that drives me toward Jesus Christ. (As if I needed another reminder.)

Your presence here is a soul-inducing reminder of Our Lord and Savior.

As I stray and ask forgiveness each and every day, I am reminded of my silly, (asinine), Youth.

I have much, for which, to ask forgiveness.

Your words, (through God), remind me of my simplicity and humanity.

I am humbled by those whose presence is First and Foremost to Our Creator. My silly prose is ultimately an escape from acknowledgement and recognition of Our Ultimate Mansion.

Though I hope to reach such bounds, I am flawed.

I'm a forty-five year-old "kid" with grudges and idealistic tendencies that don't always agree with Biblical lessons.

I strive to become a better person because idiots and simpletons should always reach for a higher mountain.

I am on a path out of a Valley, but your continued words are sweet, sweet inspiration for those aspiring to find God.

Might Love continue to inspire your presence and written word.

It took me almost an hour to find the words for this post.

I Love You. God Bless You and yours...

Though stepping back a bit, the macro-fallaciousness of the whole thing just swamps everything and casts specific items like this in a different light. When undisputed geological record, and physics, and even our puny actual "data" (now, apparently, including radiosonde data, which shows basically a flatline since the 50s) support none of their conjectures masquerading as hypotheses ..... it's just ridiculous.

404 You probably mean 5N, that's equivalent to my pre-N 4. I passed the last year before they changed numbering system. I'm about in the same situation: would like to get the 4N but don't have the time to study the kanji I'd need. Good luck in December, gambare!

Yeah this is using the new post-2010 five level scheme. It gets confusing when looking at old study materials since you can't tell if level 4 means the old level 4 or the new 5N level.

I think there's something wrong when you use a bunch of 2 sig fig measurements to create a 3 sig fig average.

Posted by: ReactionaryMonster Bravely supporting kittens at April 28, 2016 01:38 AM (1D4Ef)

No, that is statistically valid. Replicate measurements allow for greater precision. Basically, if you measure the temperature 100 times, and 50 of them are 3.4, and 50 of them are 3.5, the fact that you measured it so many times gives you confidence that the "true temperature" is pretty close to 3.45, with the added digit.

I'm trying not to ragestorm past where they can talk me down, but we got an Officejet 8630 around May, set it up with a dedicated printserver so that it could be printer A on network 1 and printer Z on network 2, got it running and it worked. Printed a few things using the setup cartridges, but not much -- figured it'd tell us when we needed to feed it ink. It's a color printer (inherently more expensive), so network 1 used a different printer by default. Then the printserver logged-off network 2.....and nobody noticed for a couple of months.

So, around August, we try to light it up, and it throws an error code 0xc19a0024. HP won't tell you what that really means. Internet sources suggest "clogged printer head" -- which would make sense, based on sustained disuse. They suggest repeated soaking in 1/8" of distilled water until ink doesn't stain it -- this makes sense for gronk in the nozzles, so we try it. Doesn't work, and real life intrudes.

Real life lets-up after tax day, so it's back to fixing things. The fiancee's employee discount on some weird plan runs out at the end of the month, there's nothing very interesting except......an HP Officejet Pro 276dw which uses the same printer cartridges as the dead 8630 for $80.

I get the 276dw, snag the printhead, pop it into the 8630 with the 276's setup cartridges.....and it works!!! Swap out the setup cartridges for production, and I should be golden....

Toss the once-used 276 setup cartridges into the former 8630 printhead and try to boot, and it throws an 0xc19a0013 error which HP will not explain in English. Since they look much the same, I figure it's the same clogged nozzle and go into HP tech support.

I figure I need an unclogged printhead and a recommendation for a cron job that will print a test page every X number of days to keep the nozzles clear. Instead, we enter The Twilight Zone.

It might be that the original '0024 error code means "I forgot that I was ever set up", and the '0013 error code means "I've been setup on a different printer". No clogs. Only the ownership of print cartridges. But I can't be sure until escalation, if then. And the solution might be to send me new setup ink cartridges (which are not for sale) and not a new printhead.

I can say that once I approve another printer vendor, I probably won't be changing until they piss me off as much as HP is.

She never stopped and eventually I was faced with deciding whether I wanted to stay with a company that would tolerate that bullshit. I didn't.

That was actually the second time someone had gone after me. Previously, working airline res, they'd tried to sack me because I was taking half the calls the other agents were taking. But I was booking twice the number of reservations. Both times the quality of my work was what saved me.

If you've got someone actively sabotaging you about all you can do is fall back on the work you've done. If the company prefers to pay attention to the troublemaker instead of evaluating your record fairly perhaps you're working for the wrong company.

One very scary wrinkle is that sane grifters usually go after the company for hiring you, the scumbucket -- after all, the company has more money. This means that it is the company's best interests to defend you as an individual. But particularly insane plaintiffs will readily settle with the company but continue to come after you personally.....at which point the company has little interest in covering -- or even aiding -- your defense. You can face huge legal bills on your own nickel, have documents that would exonerate you sealed-up in the corporation, and face personal ruin.

461 @450

Well, that's like looking in the mirror.

Since my coworker was hired, it has been complaint after complaint after complaint, nearly every week, SOMETHING comes up. So, I'm being talked about behind my back, and then my boss reprimands me.

A lot of the things that are being complained about are things that the people who I taked over my job from did with no complaint at all. So, I do things exactly like the previous people, and then all of the sudden, I'm supposed to change things. Which, I don't mind being flexible.

Back Story: lesson in no good deed goes unpunished. Because I am so efficient, I was/am able to get duties that previously took 5 days done in 4 days. Which, good for me, but this led to me, due to financial reasons and what not, being asked to go down to 4 days a week. Either I could take 4 days a week or I would be out of a job.

Well, as it turned out, I was fine with going down to 4 days a week. It was worth it for me to have a day off every week. So, I accepted. At the time, however, I told my boss that there would be some weeks- not every day, not every week- but some weeks, I would be very work-heavy, so I'd need to work through lunch every so often to get that work done. This was fine, all was agreed upon.

Fast forward a year till now, and my coworker voiced complaints that I was working through lunch, and that out of fairness, I should be forced to take a lunch.

I love my work, but I am thinking of looking for other jobs.

474 I think my ideal job would be some sort of work-at-home deal. No co-workers to worry about. No customers to worry about complaining.

Just, do my work, and not have to worry about it.

477 Fast forward a year till now, and my coworker voiced complaints that I was working through lunch, and that out of fairness, I should be forced to take a lunch.

Speaking from the perspective of a boss whose hired and fired lots of people over the years ... she wouldn't have made it back to her desk.

Pro-tip, provide your boss with hard documented evidence of malfeasance, so she can be fired.

(I realize my phrasing could be construed as sexist, and perhaps racist. But, I don't care. I am a racist, sexist misanthrope pig; who enjoys it.)

I had a "problem" back, in the 80's in a public restroom, in a train station, with HS friends WAITING for me to come back out (like everyday!).

510 I've seen people have so much trouble with inkjets due to not using them frequently enough, I've recommended buying it cheap and not setting it up until it is actually needed for color output, then giving it to someone who'll appreciate it rather than waiting for it to fail. Most of the time a BW laser is fine and more economical.

My take is, if you don't print color often enough to keep the cartridges from drying and becoming clogged, there is no point to owning such a printer. You'll spend less paying someone for the use of theirs, be it a neighbor or a local business and you'll experience far less frustration.

For inexpensive BW lasers, I give Samsung my recommendation. What you get for under $100 these day is simply amazing. 1200 dpi, USB, wired and wireless networking with smartphone app support, full duplex, and really small.

That is more of Obama's racial bigotry. He actually started this several months ago and some slow news servers are just finding it. The idea behind it is that blacks get sent to jail by a larger portion of their population do discriminating against convicted felons is racist.

Note that these are "strong" recommendations but do not have the force of law. The 1964 civil rights act has nothing in it about felons.

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.

That story above about the grade schooolers forbidden to sing the National Anthem infuriates me. Not because of the nasty, jackbooted attitude of the guards - I expect that, and frankly, it should be a salutary wake-up call for anyone who thinks LEOs would be on the side of the Constitution if Barky or Scankles called for mowing down American citizens - but the supine, pantywaisted, utterly gutless response by the tour leaders, to simply back down, grovel and tell the children, "you have to follow the rules!"

If anyone doesn't believe "America" - our America, a land of rugged individualists, freedom-loving citizens and iconoclasts - is dead, that story ought to wake you from your coma.

***

Anyway, let's try for a cheery story. This comes courtesy of the great character actor Pat O'Brien:

It seems there was an old ham actor who, to his surprise, landed a bit part in a new Broadway play. In Act I, he was to play a Lower East Side barfly who walks into a saloon. And then he was to play the same character in Act III.

On opening night, he strolled on to the saloon set, did his bit and walked out. When he got to the wings, the stage director snarled, "You dope - you left your hat on the bar and the whole audience noticed it."

The contrite actor mouthed his apologies and silently vowed to set things right. And so, Act III rolled around. The actor strolled on to the saloon set, grabbed his hat and jammed it firmly on to his head. To his astonishment, the audience burst into laughter and gave him a standing ovation when he left the stage.

"What happened?" he asked the stage manager. "What did I do?"

"You idiot,"
the SM spat. "This scene takes place fifteen years later!"

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Make sue you get a house in a neighborhood not being aggravated by crime fallout from Charleston. But otherwise Summerville is a fairly nice place and has proximity to the beach.
And old Charleston has become a tourist mecca and has some outstanding restaurants.

Deety, if you're still here...thanks for asking about me. "Not OK", as cooth said, is a good way to describe my life lately...depression issues, mostly. Thanks to the grace of God, and the support of the Horde, I'm doing alright.

I thought those bow and arrow sets with the rubber suction cups on the arrows had been banned because those cups come off easily and have resulted in injuries.

In fact, when I was a kid we would take them off and use a pencil sharpener to put points on the arrows.

Sorry about the lack of response earlier on the classed/classless IP thing. I was getting ready for work and didn't think to check back. In case you check back, I'll try to explain it.

Basically, early in the days of the internet, IANA, the organization that was formed to keep IP addresses sorted, would give out addresses in job lots with what was called a class license. The Class A licenses gave you about 16 million addresses, Class B's gave you 65,534, and Class C gave you 254. The exact numbers were due to the magic of binary numbers. Unfortunately, this was extremely inconvenient.

Not only was IANA not careful about how they handed out the class licenses, but they were also in inconvenient sizes for real-world users. Suppose you're an ISP with 2 million subscribers. Do you get 1 Class A, or a whole bunch of Class B's? Most of them got a single Class A, and let the unused addresses go to waste... and since IP addresses are now a precious resource, they guard their class licenses jealously and refuse to trade.

IPv6 does away with that. No more class licenses, every device generates a much longer, unique address that's based on your regional backbone servers, your ISP, and your network card's MAC address, and there's such a ridiculous amount of combinations that we'll (hopefully) never use them, or they'll have to do something that has an even more ungodly amount of possible combinations...

It's not so much the permit that bothers me as the knuckling under, Vic.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at April 28, 2016 07:02 AM (X6fMO)

588 Sort of related to the permit story at the memorial. In Virginia, it is illegal to relocate wildlife. In Fairfax County, it is illegal to kill nuisance wildlife yourself, but you can trap it. The only (legal) way to dispose of the groundhog digging up my yard was to call a licensed pest control company. They can remove the animal and euthanize it. I told every agency I called I had no problem leaning off the deck and shooting it with my .22. The guy who came and picked up the groundhog I trapped said that was actually one of the approved methods of euthanization. Now, if I lived outside of the city limits, I could have shot it. Animal control wouldn't pick it up, and the animal shelter wouldn't euthanize it if I brought it to them either. So, instead of costing 8 cents for a bullet, it was $250. I wonder how much the county makes off of the licensing fees? It's a racket.

What you have been hit with is not that they don't want you killing pests like moles and groundhogs. They don't want you shooting a gun in a residential area. Nearly every State and local community in the country has some version of those laws.

Even here in Podunct, SC I can not discharge a weapon where I live and it is a $500 fine for first offense. And that is why I took down my bird feeder because I could not take the shotgun to the cowbirds and grackles who were stripping it.

Note also that I do not live in the city limits, but the law still applies because I live in a residential area, as zoned by the county.

There's road construction just up the road from me...repaving a two mile stretch, and the day before yesterday, at the end of the work day, one of the construction vehicles took out a utility pole. Power was out for about twelve hours, while the power company put up a new pole, and restrung power lines.
Verizon shares the pole, and their cables are still laying on the ground, and blocking one driveway. That cable is directly between me, and the local verizon building....and so when someone breaks that, I'll be losing phone, and my shitty internet until such time as Verizon caves to union demands.
