Discovery channel has a regular show called "Naked and Afraid". 2 survivalists try to stay alive for 3 weeks in a hostile environment. No clothing, one tool allowed.
Anyway, you get to see two people, a male and a female, trying to stay alive for 3 weeks. The show has a whole crew of people just to blur out the naughty bits.
So, I've been watching it. Then, the wife notes "Hey they have a whole camera crew and medical staff. Maybe they would give them a sammich."

The Wild Bill one to Chicago? It's been ages since I've seen BTB... can't recall that in the movie they were competing against a train... just with each other to be first. I recall that BTB was set during the "waning days" of the frontier and whatnot. Similar set up plot wise.

A fair trial ensures that those accused of a crime have a chance to defend themselves before being punished by the state, which wasn't present at the original offense. The right to self-defense ensures that those present at the crime are able to prevent harm to themselves.
If a thug breaks into my house and I catch him in my living room, I may shoot him if I feel that I was threatened. I may not shoot him in the back as he's running away. I may not track him down hours or days later and kill him in revenge. The right to self-defense and the right to a fair trail go hand in hand, in that the State acknowledges that it is not omniscient and so must grant the accused benefit of doubt.

In 1897 for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee parade, every country/colony in the British Empire sent military contingents to march in the parade.
The officer in charge of the contingent from the North-West Mounted Police decided that instead of wearing their full-dress uniforms that they would wear their workday uniforms instead. It's a really good, under rated movie. My only gripe is the raid? sub plot that is she horned in. The story didn't need it. Other than that, it's great. The race leader having to to shoot his beloved horse is heartbreaking. Well done with no schmaltz to the scene.

For a while in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Tommy Lasorda, of all people, had a small chain of restaurants called, of course, LaSorda's. Lakewood had a location.
To this day I remember their buffalo wings. I don't know what they put on them, but OMG it was sooooo good. It wasn't like other buffalo sauces... it had a heartiness and flavor that went way beyond anything I've ever found anywhere else. In the meantime, about 1995 the chain closed its doors.
Still wish I could get that recipe. I've even thought of writing Tommy himself.

I'm now seriously thinking of going ahead and just doing a really quick Vegas bender this summer beforehand, just two nights. I'm not far from Long Beach Airport and JetBlue has super-cheap direct flights, and I don't have any problem with staying during the week to save money.
I could play a bit, go only to the few casinos I *really* want to check out, finally get to try Craftsteak at the MGM, and use shuttles to get around so I can avoid car rental and parking fees/hassles.
No, it wouldn't be the all-time dream Vegas vacation I've been wanting... but I'm thinking, it would be enough. And I'd get to find out how (un)comfortable those airline seats actually are.

That number is based on your computer's IP address on the Internets.
There's not enough IP addresses, so a lot of them are shared. So you might get IP #1 Monday, and then IP #2 next Monday.
It's like getting a ride through Uber - the license plate can be different each time because it's a different car.
But some people can afford their own car and thus keep the same plate number.

Yeah. My hash changed after the shutdown last night here in sunny Alberta.
I have been in Suburban-mending mode the last few days. Repairing last November's rear-ender damage to the '08, and today I borrowed the alternator off the wounded '96 to enable me to complete the water pump replacement on the '97. Got that one up and running; no leaks, and alternator is charging up a storm, so it's all good.
The vapor recovery (charcoal) canister on the rear of the '08 took damage when it was hit last November, and half the charcoal pellets (look like black mouse turds) fell out the hole. I had gotten another canister Monday when I picked up a used rear window from the auto wreckers. But the new canister was smaller, and had the pipe nipples in the wrong places, plus it didn't fit the bracket at all. So I figured, "What the heck!", and sawed the new canister open, and recovered the charcoal pellets. Enough to completely fill a 2# coffee can. The chamber which had emptied had a spring-loaded baffle, almost like a piston, in it to keep the granules bunched up so they wouldn't rattle or channelize (and the canister I cut open was similarly equipped). I rigged a string through a hole to tie that baffle back and compress the spring. The I used sheets of plastic from the "donor" canister to mend the damaged one, doing my main fastening with pop rivets, and sealing the seams by "plastic welding" with a heated nail. With the damage all repaired, I then used a hole saw to make one small hole, and filled the chamber with charcoal pellets using a funnel. Then I welded a cap over the fill hole. Then I untied the string, letting the baffle push against the pellet charge, and fished the string out, and welded up the hole. The unit is now back on the truck, and other than looking funny, ought to work as well as ever.
And a big bonus on Monday, too. While tracking down a rear glass at the auto wreckers, I did a search for "2008 Suburban rear window" on Kijiji, a Canadian classified site comparable to Craiglist. No rear windows, but I did find an ad for "rear interior door panels". Mine had been missing since I bought the truck, and ex-RCMP rig. I called the number, and he still had them, 2 sets, with hardware. Timing was right. he had them in his truck, and was going to haul them for scrap. So I bought both sets. "By the way, I have the consoles, too." So I got one of them, too. I asked, "how did you come to have all these parts?" "I used to prepare vehicles for the RCMP." Heh. The panels I installed yesterday quite possibly came out of the very truck I put them back into. And fifty bucks got me both pairs of panels and the console. Got all that stuff put in yesterday. Even installed a pair of speakers. And the power window switches, which I thought were gone, turned out to be tie-wrapped to a harness in side the door, out of sight. So the interior of the '08 is now back to factory, with all functions working.

I passed the JLPT 5 two years ago and now I'm aiming for JLPT 4 in December.
But I didn't really keep up with it after passing so I'm having to do a lot of review of the 5 material. I'm also finding that JLPT 4 has a lot more vocabulary and kanji than 5 - but I'm pretty good at memorization so it's just a matter of plowing through it.

No odor at all. some dust commingled with the charcoal, but the portion of it I used was pretty clean. Yeah rattles are reduced. And I got rid of two BIG clunks. While doing interior cleaning/detailing last weekend (got enough dog hair to knit a whole new dog), I took the interior skins off the "C" pillars. Sure enough, the rear shoulder belts were dangling inside the pillars, with the male buckle tab and floor anchor able to clank against metal at every opportunity. So I got them sorted out, and now I have full seat belt functionality, too. And two less clunks.Did you see I found another MGB, but this time with Webbers!? lol
Not sure how much he wants for it and at least one spare engine, but I'm not payin more than $500 lol

I wouldn't want to solder onto tempered glass. It might disintegrate from thermal stress. I think the factory tabs are either electroplated onto the fired-on grid, or else attached with silver-filled epoxy.

No, that is statistically valid. Replicate measurements allow for greater precision. Basically, if you measure the temperature 100 times, and 50 of them are 3.4, and 50 of them are 3.5, the fact that you measured it so many times gives you confidence that the "true temperature" is pretty close to 3.45, with the added digit.

I'm trying not to ragestorm past where they can talk me down, but we got an Officejet 8630 around May, set it up with a dedicated printserver so that it could be printer A on network 1 and printer Z on network 2, got it running and it worked. Printed a few things using the setup cartridges, but not much -- figured it'd tell us when we needed to feed it ink. It's a color printer (inherently more expensive), so network 1 used a different printer by default. Then the printserver logged-off network 2.....and nobody noticed for a couple of months.
So, around August, we try to light it up, and it throws an error code 0xc19a0024. HP won't tell you what that really means. Internet sources suggest "clogged printer head" -- which would make sense, based on sustained disuse. They suggest repeated soaking in 1/8" of distilled water until ink doesn't stain it -- this makes sense for gronk in the nozzles, so we try it. Doesn't work, and real life intrudes.
Real life lets-up after tax day, so it's back to fixing things. The fiancee's employee discount on some weird plan runs out at the end of the month, there's nothing very interesting except......an HP Officejet Pro 276dw which uses the same printer cartridges as the dead 8630 for $80.
I get the 276dw, snag the printhead, pop it into the 8630 with the 276's setup cartridges.....and it works!!! Swap out the setup cartridges for production, and I should be golden....
Toss the once-used 276 setup cartridges into the former 8630 printhead and try to boot, and it throws an 0xc19a0013 error which HP will not explain in English. Since they look much the same, I figure it's the same clogged nozzle and go into HP tech support.
I figure I need an unclogged printhead and a recommendation for a cron job that will print a test page every X number of days to keep the nozzles clear. Instead, we enter The Twilight Zone.
It might be that the original '0024 error code means "I forgot that I was ever set up", and the '0013 error code means "I've been setup on a different printer". No clogs. Only the ownership of print cartridges. But I can't be sure until escalation, if then. And the solution might be to send me new setup ink cartridges (which are not for sale) and not a new printhead.
I can say that once I approve another printer vendor, I probably won't be changing until they piss me off as much as HP is.

One very scary wrinkle is that sane grifters usually go after the company for hiring you, the scumbucket -- after all, the company has more money. This means that it is the company's best interests to defend you as an individual. But particularly insane plaintiffs will readily settle with the company but continue to come after you personally.....at which point the company has little interest in covering -- or even aiding -- your defense. You can face huge legal bills on your own nickel, have documents that would exonerate you sealed-up in the corporation, and face personal ruin.

Well, that's like looking in the mirror.
Since my coworker was hired, it has been complaint after complaint after complaint, nearly every week, SOMETHING comes up. So, I'm being talked about behind my back, and then my boss reprimands me.
A lot of the things that are being complained about are things that the people who I taked over my job from did with no complaint at all. So, I do things exactly like the previous people, and then all of the sudden, I'm supposed to change things. Which, I don't mind being flexible.
Back Story: lesson in no good deed goes unpunished. Because I am so efficient, I was/am able to get duties that previously took 5 days done in 4 days. Which, good for me, but this led to me, due to financial reasons and what not, being asked to go down to 4 days a week. Either I could take 4 days a week or I would be out of a job.
Well, as it turned out, I was fine with going down to 4 days a week. It was worth it for me to have a day off every week. So, I accepted. At the time, however, I told my boss that there would be some weeks- not every day, not every week- but some weeks, I would be very work-heavy, so I'd need to work through lunch every so often to get that work done. This was fine, all was agreed upon.
Fast forward a year till now, and my coworker voiced complaints that I was working through lunch, and that out of fairness, I should be forced to take a lunch.
I love my work, but I am thinking of looking for other jobs.

My take is, if you don't print color often enough to keep the cartridges from drying and becoming clogged, there is no point to owning such a printer. You'll spend less paying someone for the use of theirs, be it a neighbor or a local business and you'll experience far less frustration.
For inexpensive BW lasers, I give Samsung my recommendation. What you get for under $100 these day is simply amazing. 1200 dpi, USB, wired and wireless networking with smartphone app support, full duplex, and really small.

And old Charleston has become a tourist mecca and has some outstanding restaurants.

I thought those bow and arrow sets with the rubber suction cups on the arrows had been banned because those cups come off easily and have resulted in injuries.

Sorry about the lack of response earlier on the classed/classless IP thing. I was getting ready for work and didn't think to check back. In case you check back, I'll try to explain it.
Basically, early in the days of the internet, IANA, the organization that was formed to keep IP addresses sorted, would give out addresses in job lots with what was called a class license. The Class A licenses gave you about 16 million addresses, Class B's gave you 65,534, and Class C gave you 254. The exact numbers were due to the magic of binary numbers. Unfortunately, this was extremely inconvenient.
Not only was IANA not careful about how they handed out the class licenses, but they were also in inconvenient sizes for real-world users. Suppose you're an ISP with 2 million subscribers. Do you get 1 Class A, or a whole bunch of Class B's? Most of them got a single Class A, and let the unused addresses go to waste... and since IP addresses are now a precious resource, they guard their class licenses jealously and refuse to trade.
IPv6 does away with that. No more class licenses, every device generates a much longer, unique address that's based on your regional backbone servers, your ISP, and your network card's MAC address, and there's such a ridiculous amount of combinations that we'll (hopefully) never use them, or they'll have to do something that has an even more ungodly amount of possible combinations...

What you have been hit with is not that they don't want you killing pests like moles and groundhogs. They don't want you shooting a gun in a residential area. Nearly every State and local community in the country has some version of those laws.
Even here in Podunct, SC I can not discharge a weapon where I live and it is a $500 fine for first offense. And that is why I took down my bird feeder because I could not take the shotgun to the cowbirds and grackles who were stripping it.
Note also that I do not live in the city limits, but the law still applies because I live in a residential area, as zoned by the county.

There's road construction just up the road from me...repaving a two mile stretch, and the day before yesterday, at the end of the work day, one of the construction vehicles took out a utility pole. Power was out for about twelve hours, while the power company put up a new pole, and restrung power lines.
Verizon shares the pole, and their cables are still laying on the ground, and blocking one driveway. That cable is directly between me, and the local verizon building....and so when someone breaks that, I'll be losing phone, and my shitty internet until such time as Verizon caves to union demands.

Yeah, I wasn't clear. It's the fed requirements that are so onerous. You do have to get a separate background check and permission from the sheriff for each suppressor, though.
I've been thinking about trying some of the rigs like oil filters, but I'm not sure it's worth the risk.
