23 Yellen's secret meeting at the White House followed an emergency secret Federal Reserve Board meeting. The Fed then held another secret meeting to discuss bank reform. These secret meetings come on the heels of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta's estimate that first quarter GDP growth was .01 percent, dangerously close to the official definition of recession.

36 The top-line numbers - though their reliability is now in question, yet another Third World quality the new degraded America has developed - may not be the most interesting.

Stats on business failures vs. start-ups, and quality (not just quantity) of employment, things like that, I believe are dramatically bad. And in some cases the worst ever seen, or showing the first negative trends ever seen, etc.

My despair and lassitude prevent me from digging them up m'sef, but I think others here are more diligent in following these numbers.

I think the don't give a fuck attitude is more of a reaction to their circumstances. Griggs v. Duke Power means that they need a degree to get hired and 40 years of college administrators jacking up costs to the maximum a family can save and borrow means that they graduate with a mortgage payment that crushes out the ability of most people to get ahead. Throw in a shitty economy since Obama took office and having to compete with people from all over the world for the available jobs and it might encourage a sort of hopeless don't give a fuck attitude.

On the other hand, they vote for the people who make their lives suck so my sympathy is a bit constrained.

NBC news reported tonight that officials with the local Minneapolis police department have asked DEA to help with determining who prescribed the Rx found in Prince's possession and in his house. His friends have said he took Percocet to combat pain he was having in his hips due to injuries from years of dancing, jumping, etc.

Also, he left no will. Today, his sister Tyka filed paperwork to ask Prince's local bank, who had helped him with financial matters, to be named special administrator to execute his estate. Court has named them administrator and they will follow state law in determining how to handle the estate.

What will happen with his music catalog and the thousands of unreleased songs and recordings should be interesting as time goes on.

The latest word is if we don't get our staff down to approximately 1/4 of our peak from a few years back our 68 year old company might shut down. I'm seriously thinking of taking the current buy out and cashing out my 401k while it still has some value. I've been working for this company for 18 years, I expected to retire here, but the last 7 years has been a series of kicks to the balls for us and I don't think I can hang on. The really bad part is there isn't exactly a huge calling for CNC machinists with severe back problems, so I'm probably going to make a career change in addition to leaving a company I'm heavily invested in.

that sounds about right. ND had the only state bank. The Bank of ND. It was created for low interest loans for farmers and student loans for kids and small business. When people were paying about 21% interest on loans in the Carter years, Bank of ND loans were charging about 4% interest. They had almost no defaults. Small population, shared values, homogenous population. People would never default on a loan because it would be embarrassing and shameful

From being a vital and fantastic weapon against the darkness in WWII and then for most of the Cold War, to an orwellian totalitarian morally-inverted freak show of corruption and idiocy.

300 looked up Northern Lights.

"Northern Lights," Henry Martinson, who is 94 years old and still does push-ups, ruminates on the soundtrack about his days as a homesteader in North Dakota, about his friends and especially about Ray Sorenson. Like Henry Martinson, Ray was an early organizer for the Nonpartisan League, a populist movement that revolutionized prairie politics in the years before World War I.

Henry realizes this story is important and he pushes himself to write it down, which he does on an electric typewriter. With just the smallest hint of humor, Henry says, "I'm not getting any younger."

Henry Martinson is a real person, for 28 years the labor commissioner of North Dakota and a former secretary of the Socialist Party. His recollections provide the frame for "Northern Lights," the stunningly photographed, fictionalized story of Ray Sorenson and other farmers like him who were radicalized in the first decades of this century. The film is the first dramatic feature by Rob Nilsson and John Hanson, both of whom have roots in the Middle West and are documentary film makers.

When "Northern Lights" stays close to the soil of North Dakota and to the events that shaped its political history, it is splendid.

If it weren't for that, California would be a deep red state today. Even as late as the mid-'90's, Republicans could win the Assembly and even win L.A. County. Many Dem areas were starting to turn Republican.

But this was not to be for three reasons: 1st). the '91 recession and end of the cold war permanently devistated aerospace and similar industries; 2nd); amnesty and the influx of more and more illegals; and 3rd). the Leftists who came in in the late '90's during the first tech boom.

369 Hat and others are correct. Falling Down is a movie that sort of documents a key element in CA's precipitous decline into idiocy.

Oh - and I think Mayhem was conflating Kennedy's '65 immigration act with the '86 Simpson-Mazzoli act - both were disastrous, but quite different in what they did.

One more element I'd add to Hat's witch's brew that doomed CA - unionization of public employees. Somebody correct me, but it's quite recent - Dill Act (signed by Brown first time around, '78?).

That disaster, combined with the conversion of the Dem Party into a cash recycling machine/errand boy for those unions, and the impact of the increasing indoctrination vs. education in the public schools (prior to that, excellent in CA) - voila.

The kibbutzim worked a bit in the beginning. The Jews bought shit swampland from the arabs and were able to turn it into rich land (they imported eucalyptus trees to drain the swamps) after which the arabs decided that they were ripped off and wanted to take it all back. Also, many of the original kibbutzim served as defense posts more than communes. In that they were farms the kibbutzim always contributed hugely disproportionate amounts of elite soldiers. I think the commando units were something like 30-35% kibbutznics, even as the kibbutz population was only around a couple of percent. I attribute this to the farming life more than anything.

However, all but a couple of kibbutzim were total failures and they were held up by government subsidies and agricultural regulation for a very long time. Most of the leftist ideas that the kibbutzim were born with disappeared from those same kibbutzim after a couple of generations (due to the kibbutznics' own disgust with them) and many kibbutznics used to keep their own private stashes of cash outside of the kibbutz (which was a big no-no).

In the end, they all failed but a couple that had picked good manufacturing plants (by luck) and made enough money to support the stagnation of kibbutz life. Most of the rest went private or broke up into moshavs (which are pseudo-kibbutzim). Some of the few that made money lost it in one scam or another - you have to understand that some kibbutzim had a lot of land near cities in a country where land is a at a serious premium.

I knew the kibbutzim had ultimately failed (and that much of their value, at least later, was strategic/military). I was just making the observation that all sorts of limited, small utopian experiments in history have worked, a little, for a short time. But never beyond that.

And they wouldn't have even worked (a little) for *any* time at all absent the unusual/perishable shared qualities the participants had - at the outset.

The Scandinavian welfare states "worked" for a generation or two - in the sense they didn't actually collapse. Of course they were a holocaust of opportunity cost and freedom - those concepts that elude more and more Americans, and which as much as anything lie at the root of our decline.

A lot of the kibbutzim were decimated by the fall in prices for some crop in the 80s, I think. I forget which one, but it was a good crop and many of the kibbutzim switched a lot fo fields over to it. Then the bottom dropped out and they were all up shit's creek. I think that was one of the main motivations for them to move into manufacturing - and many of them just made awful decisions building plants and running them (as they had no experience and no one knew anything - in addition to the old kibbutz idea that all people would rotate through all jobs on a regular basis). And I mentioned, a few got lucky and picked some very profitable plastic manufacturing schemes ... but they, interestingly, liked spending their money on themselves and not splitting their profits with the less fortunate kibbutzim!

I was the competitive ex-husband keeping up in the good parenting department, so we shared the expenses and the long stupid inconvenient drives.

One of the keys was rewards (small toys) for good poops.

Between the therapist and the rewards I calculated that it cost us $50 per poop.

Thank god he got over it.

I was waiting at a light, and across the street a school bus dropped off a little kid at his house. He was maybe six or seven (maybe), carrying a backpack, and his mother came outside to get get him and gave him a big hug and kiss as he dropped the backpack and ran inside.

It was ridiculously adorable.

441 Diaper rashes are often caused by thrush which is basically a yeast infection. Rinsing with a vinegar/ water solution and applying an anti fungal like Lotrimin(sp?) is what my pediatrician recommended and it worked. For just a mild redness, Boudroux's butt paste was great. Very thick so you had good coverage as a barrier to what was irritating them.

Posted by: lindafell de spair at April 27, 2016 09:46 PM (xVgrA)

442 In hospitals, I've seen them cover the rash with milk of magnesia, put the baby on its stomach, a sand bag between its legs, an oxygen tube taped to the sandbag and aimed at the afflicted area. Because oxygen is cold, they put a lot of blankets on the kid and a sunlamp with only the tush exposed. Looks weird but it works. At home I would try milk of magnesia and exposure to air.

507 489-Either. We have people waiting for years as legal immigrants to come to the US, trying to follow the law. They get pushed aside for the line jumpers.

I'm really addressing the disgruntled types who scream that our immigration policy is so hateful/bigoted, etc. It's not. It's one of the most lenient in the world, primarily because the rest of the world has far more interest in protecting their borders, except perhaps that shady area between Saudi and Yemen which is in constant movement. But as far as B1/2 visas, I think we need to have exact reciprocity in issuance as those countries impose on us. Because we bend over backwards to issue visas, when other nations shut down visas to American citizens for petty ass reasons, such as not enough maid visas.

I've done a lot of consular work. A lot. There is so much that is screwed up and wrong, mainly because consuls aren't allowed to follow the regs, because appointees and congress critters get in the middle of things, and try to change requirements on their particular sacred cow.

Lawyers were crooks, and doctors were just plain stupid -- he said all the medicine they learned just drove the common sense and other necessary knowledge right out of their heads. Should I go there? I shall go there.

I prefer a poop thread to immigration.

So a little over a year ago I got a note from a hippie girl I used to be in a house share with. I hadn't seen her except on FB for nearly a decade.

She was having horrible trouble with IBS. She'd tried diet, medicine, holistic treatments (she's a no shit holistic veterinarian, does accupuncture on dogs and things) and the one avenue left open to her was fecal transplant therapy.

The theory is that some people's gut bacteria are lacking and that transferring healthy gut bacteria would help.

She was so nervous when she wrote to ask if I'd do that and take the gut bacteria tests to see if we had compatible poop.

I was so flattered that of all the people in her life she thought I'd be the one to say "cool!" and she was right.

Might just be a reaction to some of the posters here, who have tended to come across as pretty extreme regarding how to secure the border and deal with the illegal problem over the years. I myself am whole-heartedly in favor of securing the border and am not in favor of amnesty, but I also know honest, hard-working illegals in meat-space (they do exist) and sometimes folks here do make me cringe a bit. Alas, the organization that measures your poop is a non-profit -- The American Gut Project -- that will measure your poop for $99 but is not in a hurry to do it. It's a fundraising thing they do to finance research.

548 "Ministerial discount", it's know as. They demand it. My uncle would give them one, when they asked for it. It started right he became the head of the shop, and thus had to start dealing with the business and money end of things a little bit.

Some preacher just demanded a 10% ministerial discount, and got downright pissy about it. So he gave the man one. He told the secretary to add 15% to every damn item on the bill. If some runs for $1, you list the price as $1.15.

Do that, and at the end, put a big "Ministerial Discount, 10%) at the bottom. And that's what we're gonna charge the SOB. That's a 3.5% increase, actually.

He tried to come off as a tough old SOB himself, but he was one generous man, to those he thought deserving. Asking him for something, demanding something, was one way to get yourself off the deserving list...forever.

The Benedictines have worked for centuries, as have other religious orders.

The key is not so much the vow of poverty, which secular communes may also have in some sense, but the vow of chastity. That is, the Benedictines are not multi-generational.
No one is born or raised one. No one takes the life for granted. Everyone comes in from the outside.
You are specially selected or called by God, as it were;
you are screened; you have a trial run before your final vows. You are dedicated.

Offhand I can't think of any multi-generational commune, religious or secular, that has worked. (The Amish and other Dunkers are congregations, not communes.)

Anyway, it's an interesting subject.

594 The gut flora have been found to play quite a role in this. Insulin resistance and obesity and all that linked to it. And this, transfering lard ass colon bacteria to normal weight subject and causing that subject to gain weight proves that it can go causally from bacteria--> fat.

How the hell can that work, you might wonder. Well, as the man said, Life, it will find a way.

We think of gut bacteria as some foreign species, some little invader setting up shot. Actually, the gut bacteria should be considered not just symbiotic, but an *organ* themselves. When you add the bacteria count vs the human cell count, the bacteria win, and if you consider them to be part of a human, well, there is more non-human DNA in terms of number of cells that human.

So, how do they do it? Well, suppose you're a bacteria that, to thrive and reproduce, you'd like for your host for to eat these nice carbs and shit that you like. What if you could release little chemicals that altered your host's metabolism and appetite so that he would eat more of that stuff.

If it makes the host a lard ass, well you don't care (long as it doesn't ultimately affect your own reproductive success in the long run).

608 When you add the bacteria count vs the human cell count, the bacteria win, and if you consider them to be part of a human, well, there is more non-human DNA in terms of number of cells that human.
----------------
That's one of those things I've read and believe, but it's still hard to believe.
Posted by: Bandersnatch at April 27, 2016 10:42 PM (1xUj/)

They win on count. We win on mass.

Think about how much you weigh. Think about how many ants it would take to weigh the same amount.

That's why there's so much more bacteria than human cells.

The whole thing is a laughingstock.
The state of CA will issue a drivers license to you, no ID, no birth certificate, no address, no problem.
It says right on it "NOT VERIFIED".
Probably register you to vote as well.

You can come across on day visits. We can too. What I don't understand is where the BP loses control of plates that are overdue. I mean, yeah, if it disappears, okay. You run a Chihuahua or Coahuila plate that is 5 days old? WTF? Questions need to be asked.

629 Explain to me what an honest illegal is.

In this case, it is a guy who came over legally, got a job, and worked here for several years. Then his wife back Mexico got breast cancer (I think the timing worked this way) and his efforts to get her into the states legally, where he could take care of her and get her treatment, proved unavailing. He then flew back to Mexico, legally, then snuck her and himself back across illegally. Now he can't renew his visa because his passport says he is still in Mexico.

Easy to talk in the abstract about the importance of the rule of law, the need for a secure border, etc., (and I certainly these things are important, in the big scheme of things), but very hard for me to blame a man for choosing to take care of his wife over these things. Particularly since this guy has made a very determined effort to learn English and fit into American culture, and works incredibly hard at a physically taxing job despite being close to sixty years old. Also, one of the nicest, most patient people you'll ever meet. The US could use more like him.

As much as a I like the guy, I can't support open borders or amnesty - it isn't good for the country (nor, as Victor Davis Hanson has pointed out, the illegals themselves). I can, I think, uphold the rule of law while making a distinction between laws that are primarily a matter of morality (do not rape, do not murder, do not steal) and those that are merely utilitarian (speed limits, game laws, and, I may venture to suggest, visa laws) and thus can make a distinction between those people that are in violation of the latter and those that are morally reprehensible.

Proffer:

Nonvoting permanent residency. Ineligible for public benefits. May not make use of "family reunification" to bring in others. If these terms aren't attractive, scram. Best of luck in the original home country. We'll buy you a bus ticket.

However, I would never actually suggest we try this, because: black-robed radicals. Who would rapidly judicially nullify all of the above stipulations.

Since the left have made it clear they will undermine any soft bargains which are struck, it's going to be hard bargaining from here on out. Vamos!

There is an extremely hard truth we need to wrap our heads around.

It is possible in many cases for immigrants to "work hard and play by the rules", to be pleasant diligent law-abiding people, to have every intent of culturally assimilating, to act in good faith upon that intent, and for them to still be, net-net, a long term fiscal drain upon American society.

Another hard truth: the way things are set up, a large cohort of our OWN NATIVE CITIZENS are, net-net, a long term fiscal drain as well. We don't need to be importing additional drainage.
