Ted Cruz to Make His Big Announcement Within Minutes

In the meantime we can talk about Trump's foreign policy speech. Jonah Goldberg calls it "okay," but also wonders if Trump has any idea what some of the claims put into his mouth by writers might mean.

The major theme was "America First," which few can disagree with in broad strokes. Trouble is, most people say they're America first, even if they're not. Even Barack Obama, had you asked him in 2008, would have claimed to have been most interested in advancing American interests.

The trouble is, people define "American interests" differently. Obama, obviously, thinks America will somehow benefit by being weak and passive. (He also thinks the world will benefit from this -- which is his real motivation. But he thinks America will benefit too. Just less than everyone else.)

I suppose the general reminder that America should act in her own self-interests -- even if ruthlessly on occasion -- is a worthwhile thing to re-state.

Trump opened his speech Wednesday vowing to "shake the rust off America's foreign policy" and said he would outline a vision for a U.S. foreign policy "that replaces randomness with purpose, ideology with strategy and chaos with peace."

He added, "My foreign policy will always put the interests of the American people and American security first."

Very platitudey, though I have to say, every platitude is somewhat different and appeals to a different mentality. Obama's "Smart Diplomacy" and "community of nations" is a platitude.

But these two platitudes are obviously different, and signal, platitudinously, different things.

I prefer Trump's platitudes, at least.

...

He panned the Iran nuclear deal, a centerpiece of Obama's foreign policy, and claimed the President has "weakened our military by weakening our economy."
And he sought to wrap former secretary of state Clinton in his criticism of the Obama administration, referring to the "legacy of the Obama-Clinton interventions" as one of "weakness, confusion and disarray."

...

"We will no longer surrender this country or its people to the false song of globalism," Trump said, explaining that he is skeptical of international agreements "that tie us up and bring America down."

Okay, read the whole article at CNN if you want more. He also said that Muslim-American cooperation "must be a two-way street," suggesting that it's not at the current moment.

Meanwhile, I'm waiting to see the new tandem of Cruz and Fiorina.

9 I watched the speech. It basically consisted of two parts:

(i) a littany of all the Obama/Clinton foreign policy disasters; and

(B) his claims about how he would handle international relations.

The description of Obama/Clinton incompetence was eviscerating.

The part about how he'd do better was the same old Trumpernutter.

23 "Smart Diplomacy" and "community of nations" are platitudes signifying nothing. Except perhaps low intelligence and lack of worldliness.

Platitudes about American strength, moral power, and responsibility may be platitudes, but connect to some reality at some level. Sometimes, in fact, the platitude and the reality are pretty close - such is the nature of modern history and esp. the nature of much of America's involvement (in particular since WWII).

54 The Carly nomination does have the reek of desperation to it, sadly.

If Trump solidifies the nomination, the next strategic argument will be whether the GOP should only give him pro forma support while allowing as many defections from his platform as possible among the members of Congress that are running -- the thinking being that if Trump does down to a 40+ state landslide, that perhaps Congress might be saved.

57 I live in Hamilton County, IN. NE side of Indy - Noblesville/Fishers/Carmel are the population areas. Affluent suburb, moderate GOP hotbed. Important county for any candidate to win next week.

While its anecdotal, I've been driving around the last week or so and road/yard signs for all races have sprung up like bad weeds. Of the presidential candidate signs around the county I've seen a good number of Kasich, even after the "Deal" and about the same amount of Trump. I have yet to see one sign for Cruz.

If Cruz wants to win in Indiana, it's places like this he has to compete, or hope he gets enough vote in rural areas to make up the difference - though trump probably will play well in them too. Road/yard signs aren't everything but it does show an issue if I see 500 for state representative and none for him even at stoplights.

The party big-wigs I met about 3-4 weeks ago were all behind Kasich, so I'm not surprised some of them have shrugged at the "deal" between Cruz and Kasich - they saw Cruz and Trump as the same kind of cancer.

A lot of people, I mean, I'm hearing this... people are telling me it was a terrific speech. Just brilliant. They, not me, they are saying it was one of the best policy speeches they've heard in a long time. In fact, some people, some really, truly smart people are saying it was the best speech ever given, and that Lincoln is rolling over in his grave that he didn't give this speech at Gettysburg. Great!

In the general?

This is California you're asking about. Zombie Reagan with his 1984 statistics probably couldn't put California into play these days.

In the primary?

She's already won a state-wide primary here once, so it's possible. Can't say for sure.

She might also help nation-wide in the primary, though. Her initial debate performance got a lot of positive attention (which is why she was invited to the "big kids debate" on the subsequent debates). And while she obviously wasn't the candidate of choice for a lot of people (given how she did in the primaries), a lot of people still seem to have ranked her quite high (just not in first place) based on the things I heard back when she was still running.

I didn't agree with going into Iraq at the time, and I understand that Bush made mistakes, but Bush laid out his case, and most Americans, including Dems in congress agreed with him. I understand hindsight is 20/20, but pretending that most people knew what would happen or that it should have been obvious is disingenuous at best.

Plus, we really wouldn't be having this conversation if Obama hadn't undone all the progress that was made, oftentimes contrary to the advice of the military folks around him.

Trump's victories in the last 6 contests are impressive except that there are considerably fewer Republican voters participating in those states. Only PA had a good size turnout yesterday. What I think this points out is that for 2020 we need to make sure the delegate allocation system is reworked. Trump is correct that it is rigged, but he's wrong in how it's rigged. It's stacked to favor an early front-runner and hobble an insurgent candidate. The RNC just never anticipated a celebrity populist would win the early races and then be propped up by big delegate hauls in deep blue states and/or states with open primaries. That's got to change in the future. New York, DE, MD, CT, etc. shouldn't have as many delegates as states with comparable population but a far higher proportion of Republicans.

I don't begrudge Trump his victories yesterday. He hails from a fairly liberal wing of thought and the Republicans in those states do as well. It's getting 100% of the WTA states earlier with less than 50% of the votes that bothers me.

Oh, and Kasich, it's past time for you to exit this race.

277 But that doesn't mean that I approve of the way we conducted the war.

Yeah it was an uneven effort but then, so was WW2, its just that we conquered so totally that people forgot or forgave it. Like someone said above, it was mostly what happened after Bush left office that ruined things. Obama totally gave away all the victories.

Cruz can't give up the attention because he's a narcissist. And he still has money in the kitty, so all those around him want to keep the game going.

NeverTrump Ringleader Romney has already gotten money into his super Pacs and still wants to get some digs in. Mitt shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the convention, nor anyone associated with him.

AnoinTED sold donors on the idea that he could capture Conservatives and Evangelicals in the SEC primaries and jump to the front. It didn't work. Surprisingly, because a cartoon character NYC billionaire split the Evangelical vote in the South. Donors won't make that mistake again.

Yes. Like Vietnam. We were chumps. Any American military victory will be undone by the next Democrats with the power to turn yet another victory into defeat. They are actually quite upfront about this if you ask them they will tell you that they have to lose wars and throw away the sacrifice of those who won them because that is the only way to keep us bloodthirsty Republicans from invading countries full of innocent brown people and killing them for sport.
Posted by: obnoxious ahole at April 27, 2016 04:45 PM (MpvuV)

And just to keep the record straight, Vietnam was started by a Democratic president, over a questionable incident.

Republican Nixon brokered a ceasefire and a peace for American withdrawal, and the Democrats backstabbed South Vietnam when the Soviets backed a North Vietnamese invasion.

Fight to win. Back up our national honor. Democrats have a lot of blood on their hands for what they've done to undermine that.

356 Black and Hispanic male voters don't seem to have a problem with her, largely because they'll vote for anybody with a D behind their name. That leaves white male D's - who, while they might not love Cankles, will still vote for her. Combine that with the women who will not vote for Trump and - well, the news is not good for Trump supporters.

400 Watched a few minutes of Carly's speech.

I originally liked her when she first announced her candidacy. Then, the more I watched her, the more I began to dislike her mannerisms.

She is really great at being an attack dog. She , however, is attacking not just Hillary, but Trump and it's pretty nasty. I get that she isn't going to vote or support Trump when he is nominated, but I'm not particularly impressed or happy that a Republican candidate is on CNN and all the outlets screeching about what a disaster Trump will be because he is just like Hillary.

While doing this, she is constantly flipping her head back and forth like a bobble doll in the back window of 88 Old's Cutlass. She looks down her nose a lot.

Superficial complaints from me, sure. But what about the rest of the vaginamericans who don't have as much immersion in politics as I do.
I'm telling you now, they will think she is a major bitch and she slept with Ted to get the VP nod.

It's how vaginamericans think and react. We tend to be catty and suspicious by nature and Carly was not a smart move for Ted.

I could live with that. I don't want to dump on the blue state Republicans. They have enough grief to deal with at home. It's just that we can't let states that don't deliver pick our presidential nominee.

Red States and Purple States should be weighted more heavily than Blue States. I'd downgrade the swing states too except it's important to create incentives.

Some states don't register voters by party so holding a closed primary is impossible without some other mechanism like requiring people to buy party memberships. That's an awful idea - see Jeremy Corbyn's election to Labor Party Leader for an example (elected by hordes of far left youngsters buying a membership for about $15).

Open primary states should only be awarding on a proportional basis to weaken the impact of mischievous Dems and disconnected Independents.

Well, when confronted with a new situation, the radical extremist will pursue the course of action that his ideology dictates, regardless of the facts or extenuating circumstances at hand.
The unprincipled demagogue will just do whatever the polls tell him to do, regardless of any moral or principled reasons not to.

479 MTF, #348:

"Once we had control of Iran's eastern border (Afghanistan) and the western border (Iraq) ..., why didn't we finish the job on the Mullahs?"

I cannot imagine how badly that would have gone. And that's no slur on our military, of which I am a (part-time and rather low-ranking) part.

Look at the Iraqi insurgency. Now imagine a country three times larger, with four times the population, and several thousand years with a national identity, far stronger than the current government. And don't listen to anyone who says the Persians hate that government and would have turned on it had we gone in. No, they'd have found unexpected reserves of devotion to Persia, and defended it fanatically in spite of helping the Mullahs.

Don't get me wrong. Iran is our enemy. Morally it deserved what you suggest. Practically, we may someday regret convincing ourselves that we didn't have to.

But if we'd gone in then, we'd have faced an insurgency that made Iraq's look trivial by comparison. And we'd never have been sure what we pre-empted, or whether we had to, and we'd have given up. Not our military; the people and the politicians at home who watch the bad news and say, This is awful. Let's make it stop.

So if nothing else, our Iraq experience inoculated us against a too-casual attitude toward the next front. Sorry to put it that way, Grammie Winger, and hat's off to your son.

"Is Donald Trump the answer? That question's on everyone's mind. But there needs to be another question answered first: Does Donald Trump mean a word he says? Are conservative leaders supporting Trump prepared to live with the consequences if he doesn't?"

Donald Trump is the answer to the failed GOP. Just by not being them and having their track record of failure theater. What he says is irrelevant to that purpose. Using that as your primary criteria betrays a complete (and probably willful) ignorance of the problem Trump solves.

"When President Trump shocks the civilized world by killing the children of terrorists, arming nations with nuclear weapons (you don't think Russia won't do likewise with its allies?) and breaking the Geneva Convention (God help our men and women captured by our enemies who will do the same) will you live with that?"

1. Reprisals work. This is the same "civilized" world that is importing rapefugees to rape their own children.

2. America is incapable of continuing to play world police. Bankrupt.

3. Terrorists don't follow Geneva conventions, and only deserve summary execution.

496 such as the ability of both 2016 Trump and 2008 Obama to just make vague empty statements that everyone pours their own content into.

"Hope and Change" sounds a lot like "Make America Great Again"

Posted by: chemjeff at April 27, 2016 05:12 PM (dpnZC)

I remember the frustration everyone had during the past two elections at how our candidates were so behind on using social media, television, etc. to their benefit. How they didn't understand how to use slogans, etc.

So Trump demonstrates how to do it by getting so much free airtime it's amazing, and people are now complaining how empty those statements/slogans sound.

Trump(and remember, I was a Cruz supporter) has been so far ahead of the curve on getting attention, getting people out to vote, etc. by getting them excited to support him. I don't remember McCain filling arenas. I don't remember Romney hosting strings of standing room only events, even when he was the last candidate standing. Romney's team couldn't figure out how to do proper polling via the internet etc. and Obama's team left him in the dirt.

Way back when there were 17 candidates, I couldn't get a true bead on how Carly would do. My personal reaction to her was negative -- she was too shrill -- but I wasn't sure how others would react to a Strong Woman and thought I might somehow be prejudiced.

I knew a bit about her HP back story -- it had a dysfunctional Board and she was brought in to be a change. Then I saw how she acted in debates and it hit me what she did at HP. She went into every Board meeting prepared to answer the questions that would naturally come up with a ready response to attack whoever asked the question.

That's what she did in the debates and it looks like she's doing it again. It's not constructive and it comes off as bitchy.

I say that knowing that Trump could be quite ugly, but it's worked for him but Carly just faded.

I think the best that can be expected is that they reflect a theme for the campaign. "Hope and Change" fit Obama, because he was promising to change America. "It's Morning Again in America" worked for Reagan's reelction campaign, because he was saying his first term had the country on the right path and that there was more of the same to come. "Make America Great Again" is clearly a response to Obama's destructive effect on the country and is meant to been seen as a promise that Trump will reverse his horrible policies.

I think they are all pretty good as overarching themes of what the candidates want to sell, but that's it. Of course, once you have the theme, you still have to do the nitty gritty work of filling in the specifics.

Cutting missile defense in Poland wasn't about money, it was about appeasing the Russians. Their position was that it would upset the balance of power if the West could shoot down the missiles that Russia could potentially shoot at Europe or the US. Obama, never one to turn down an opportunity to weaken the West, agreed. The agreement to put the missiles in Poland - made under Bush - was scrapped and Russia was content.

I agree about working with the Russians when it is in our interests and opposition to the jihadists certainly qualifies.

I will accept that as a retraction. Good. Thank you.

Why don't you clearly and in detail describe what being an American means to you, and describe why, under your conception of what it means to be an American, how I am "unAmerican", while truthfully describing MY positions. Go ahead I will wait. I wouldn't want to mischaracterize your positions or anything.
Posted by: chemjeff at April 27, 2016 06:02 PM (dpnZC)

My definition - American means having a complete and higher loyalty to America - before all other nationalities on earth.

A simple test of that is that you'd be willing to fight for America in a war against any other country. Including say, Israel.

You have said that you find giving soccer balls and teddy bears to illegals entering the US to be a harmless, humane thing. Do you find this to be a truthful summary of your views?

The problem with that is that immigration is invasion. This is a conclusion of military historians.

It's illustrated in 30 year olds pretending to be 13 year olds so that our traitorous federal government will let him in.

But even if every 13 year old was actually 13 years old, importing an unlimited number of them destroys America as a culture and a people.

The specific number is just negotiating the price of the whore.

So when you're okay with assisting illegals into the US because they're "kids" - you undermine America's culture and people in favor of some foreign culture and people. It's the logical outcome, even if that's not the result you're aiming for.

That may be very humane, but it's not American.

I'm highly doubtful Trump could carry PA. It's gone more and more left since George H.W. Bush carried it in 1988. I thought there was a chance in 2008 because of Obama's hostility to guns and coal which are 2 big things in PA (there's a reason Hillary won the state campaigning against him on those issues). In the end it wasn't enough.

The Northeast section of PA is part of the "T" in the state. It's the conservative part of the state with the big lefty concentrations in the Southeast (Philly) and Southwest (Pittsburgh). The problem is the T doesn't have enough population to beat the concentration of voters in the cities.

Watch on election night in November. If the Dem starts the night 200K - 250K votes up on the Republican, it's over in PA. Only if the race is closer than that is there a chance. The cities report sooner. The T votes come in slow and late.

Trump may be able to make it closer assuming that the extra vote he gets from disaffected Dem hunters/coal miners outweighs the moderate Republicans that live in the suburbs. To actually win the state would take a miracle or a political black swan event.

The only reason you see Republican Senators and Governors in PA is the mid-term voter turnout is less Democratic. If Trump is counting on PA, he'll probably lose out.

The opposite is the case for Trump, where it appears in times of leisure he says things that are not well thought out, but when put in a vice he actually can save himself.

Posted by: William Eaton at April 27, 2016 06:21 PM (KhJh"

You may be right.

Realism Bomb III: a significant part of the Republican base does not believe that Donald Trump would make a good nominee or a good president. They are concerned based on available data and past performance of poor candidates that while he may be able to win the nomination, he's likely to lose badly and have severe down-ballot effect.

It took 3 elections to climb back from losing the House and Senate to being in the majority again. Look at all the crud Obama pulled in his first 2 years with a veto-proof majority. Imagine what Hillary could do with such a majority now that Obama has led the way in torching the law, historical precedents, and respecting the separate branches of government. Not to mention that this election could flip the Supreme Court for a generation. Those are big stakes.

Consider this: If Cruz gets the nomination but loses the election, his career for higher office is over. If he bowed out now he'd be in a decent position to start his next campaign the day after Election Day (assuming Trump loses). He's pressing on for a reason. Is it just pure ambition? Maybe. Or maybe it's that he sees a disaster befalling the country and is willing to burn a lot of goodwill pressing on in hopes of averting that disaster.

If Trump gets the nomination, I'll vote for him only because I live in a swing state and don't have the luxury of doing a write-in or voting Libertarian to salve my conscience. I will accept absolutely NO blame if Trump gets this nomination and loses a completely winnable election with this much on the line. If such an outcome happens, that disaster will be 100% owned by the voters that chose him as the nominee.

Much as I loathe Trump, if he gets the nomination, then I want him to win because dammit, I want someone other than a Dem hack moving into Scalia's Supreme Court seat. He'd undoubtedly cause a lot of heartburn in other ways as he started moving left to "get stuff done", but the SC nomination would be done early when he might still value keeping Republicans happy.

I've crossed my fingers over PA so many times and been disappointed. The last good news to come out of there was Pat Toomey winning the Senate seat and a Republican taking the seat that Joe Murtha used to have.

5% doesn't sound like much, but it's a lot of voters. PA has a pretty big population. The machine politics in Philly are sickeningly effective.

569 My definition - American means having a complete and higher loyalty to America - before all other nationalities on earth.

That is not how I view it. I view being an American as holding a loyalty to the *principles* upon which America was founded.

So if the government is not living up to the timeless principles upon which America was founded, I would consider it an *American* thing to do to disagree with my government and demand that it change course.

The problem with that is that immigration is invasion. This is a conclusion of military historians.

I also disagree with using a military metaphor to describe immigration, even illegal immigration.

A military invasion is one in which an organized fighting force, under explicit orders from a foreign government, wishes to take and conquer land held by an enemy, and transfer sovereignty over that land from the conquered nation to the invading nation. Is this what you literally mean when it comes to illegals? If so then I will require some stronger evidence than "some guy flies a Mexican flag over his house" or "some conspiracy loons speak darkly about a Reconquista movement".

But even if every 13 year old was actually 13 years old, importing an
unlimited number of them destroys America as a culture and a people.

For the record, I don't want to import "unlimited" numbers of anyone.

But going back to what I wrote earlier, being American to me means holding to the timeless principles upon which the country was founded. It isn't about the particular cultural makeup, or ethnic makeup, or any other sort of demographic statistic, that happens to exist at this particular instance in time. Someone can be an American but have a very different culture than my typical white middle class suburban/urban culture. I don't think there is any principled reason per se to let everyone in, I don't think there is any principled reason to keep everyone out either. But if we believe that it is beneficial, for some pragmatic reason, to allow legal immigration, as long as those immigrants want to come here and adopt our customs and values, then I'm fine with that. As a conservative I want the process to be slow and cautious, but I am not opposed in principle. That is where I stand.

I think it's more accurate to say that Donald Trump won the states in the red south against a huge field that split the vote up a lot. He benefited tremendously from a field that spanned the spectrum of GOP voters. Remember, he wasn't getting anywhere near 50% until the last couple of weeks aside from about 48% in Massachusetts.

Had the first two states been successful in winnowing the field the way they usually do, Trump would have faced a much harder task consolidating the vote. Most GOP front-runners start winning convincingly much earlier. He failed to build the infrastructure or expand his support in a timely manner.

There's a reason he stopped participating in debates as soon as the field got down to 3 people. He was having trouble filling the talk time with only 4 people and having more time for probing questions on his plans wasn't going to help him.

Bottom line: he lucked out in a lot of ways.

Maybe it will carry him to victory in Cleveland. If so, I'll be grieving that lost Supreme Court seat for a long time....

No, it is not. It is a metaphor. A literal military invasion is as I described above. It is, however, cultural change, that is true. Can cultural change lead to a lot of bad consequences? Yes, it can. 579 We found out Diplo-Donald's foreign policy at the time he did.

He made some good points. However, there are some issues.

First, it's Trump.
Second, he's still doing Bush Lied, People Died. And Blame America First for the Middle East.
Third, he wants a bi-partisan foreign policy. That would mean Half Obama, Half Trump: an O-rump policy.
Fourth, NATO still has the mission of deterring Russia, despite a reset reset button with his flattery bully-buddy. He doesn't get that alliances are good for our purposes, not just give-aways.
Fifth, he's not for closing a single govt. agency despite the bottomless budgetary pit. ed wants to zero out 5.
Sixth, he can't understand or explain Obama's "reckless" foreign policy. I can. And it is not reckless--it is reckoned and purposeful.
Seventh, he doesn't understand that the VA is run for the benefit of its unions, not the vets, just as education is run for unions, not for kids. Neither can be fixed without that knowledge.

All these life-long liberal blinders are why he would get rolled in DC.

As for Carly, she was magnificent. Her exposition of the Constitution was brilliant, especially since young people have been intentionally deprived of their understanding and ownership of it.

So don't weasel out of what you wrote earlier. You clearly implied the military usage of the term.

And furthermore, military or not, usage of the term "invasion" as opposed to a more benign term, such as just "immigration" is designed - intentionally, I believe - to connote that the immigrants have malevolent intent. And I think the term is used among certain less-than-scrupulous segments of the right in order to whip up LIV Republicans into an outraged frenzy. I don't go in for that sort of scapegoating so I would rather not use the term "invasion".

America is facing Balkanization. There is serious rot in America

You are painting a static view of American culture. It is changing, not entirely for the better of course, but it will never just stand still and never change. To the degree that there is "rot" in American culture - and yes I believe there is some - I don't think immigrants are really the major problem. It isn't immigrants who are driving the welfare state forward, that's the domestic population. Immigrants aren't the ones in Appalachia living off of fake disability claims as de facto wards of the state, for instance. The mentality of living on the dole without shame or remorse is a problem far beyond immigration itself.

And I find the "ethnic cleansing" claim a bit bizarre. What exactly are you referring to?

597 I only pointed out that you seem to identify more with a different race than the one you are, kinda like Dolezal.

The white guy tells me I'm acting white, instead of like the minority I'm supposed to act like.

Don't be racist, chemjeff.

598 Oh so you AREN'T actually done with the conversation. You'll come back to land some cheap shots but not to actually answer questions. Typical I suppose.

Are you ever going to tell us whether you would rather have black Thomas Sowell, or white Mitch McConnell, as the champion of conservatism?

And for the record I am not telling you to act according to any racial prescription. I don't believe in that nonsense. You are free to be a white supremacist even if you don't have white skin!

Posted by: chemjeff at April 28, 2016 01:37 AM (EeCZf)

599 And by the way, "white supremacism" != "acting white"

Posted by: chemjeff at April 28, 2016 01:39 AM (EeCZf)

600 It's rather telling that you seem to believe that "acting white" means "believing in white racial superiority".

Who said this, chemjeff?

"I only pointed out that you seem to identify more with a different race than the one you are, kinda like Dolezal. "

You need to work on your dishonesty.

602 Oh so you AREN'T actually done with the conversation.

This isn't a conversation, you dishonest hack. When you twist my words in bad faith, there is no dialogue.

You want me to answer questions so you have more material to twist. As you've repeatedly demonstrated, you don't any help from me to put words into my mouth.

603 Funny how you simply ignore and refuse to entertain the substantive questions, preferring instead to rely on your feigned cries of outrage. No wonder why you like Trump, he does the same thing. When the questions start getting difficult, you'll say "liar liar pants on fire! bad faith! dishonest hack!" and imagine phony insults where none exist so as to distract from the conversation. Those who read this conversation know what is going on. I've outed you as the alt-right white nationalist that you really are.

"Feigned", eh? So you project that i'm dishonest like you are.

Act in good faith and you can get answers. Act like you are now, and you will be treated with the contempt you've earned.
