16 For those who have expressed an interest:

From this week in 1944 - Anzio, Italy

The EZ Dog Journal

Apr 24, 1944
Sunny for a while - then cloudy in the afternoon with a little rain. This has been perhaps the quietest day in a couple months.
I went to a 34 Div school for a CB lecture to some doughfeet. They were more interested in telling their tales than in listening to mine. It was more fun anyway so I listened, and they talked.

Apr 25, 1944
The 3d Div pulled a "FISHNET" attack with an open box barrage, a loud speaker and some tanks. 9 prisoners were taken and quite a number of Gerries bumped off. There was very little reaction to the raid.

Apr 26, 1944
As usual Gerry starts his reaction about a day late. He was quick to come back on CB when we fired, harassed the front lines and roads all day long, then 2100 opened up with everything he had.
No invasion yet, and no plans in effect or progress to relieve the situation here. As long as it seems to take with all our supplies and troops the show had better be good when it takes off.

Does anybody know about the term "FISHNET" in this context? It sounds like some sort of elaborate feint to make the enemy think there is a major assault underway. I am not familiar with the term.

21 More from this week in 1944- EZ Dog

Apr 27, 1944
A wonderful day for observation. Gerry shot just enough for our observers to get in the swing of things and really plaster him.
Paul and I had a little game of catch this afternoon and then went to the beach for a sun bath. Fortunately there was no iron ration served up with our vitamins.

Apr 28, 1944
Another trip to 34 Div. About the same results as before. Such stories as machine-gun bursts between one's legs, and rocket guns that flame all the way, and shells that make holes you could lose a 6 X 6 in. One fellow had some Gerry propaganda - all about what the 4-Fers are doing with our women at home (illustrated too). Not very effective as a rule, but it does have a definite effect on some who aren't too sure of their girlfriends.

Here are some examples of the German propaganda that he refers to on April 28:

57 Does anybody know about the term "FISHNET" in this context?"

IIRC, it's a "sweep" thru the "box" barrage.

Works like this: enemy line is fairly well defined. Artillery opens up w/a 3 sided pattern, with the open end facing our lines (thus preventing other enemy reinforcements or their leaving the "box"). A fishnet is then deployed - light infantry patrols w/the intent of taking as many prisoners as possible.

Used to have a book of "Soldiers Slang". Have to look that up someday...

Posted by: Nevergiveup at April 28, 2016 08:22 AM (V/InG)

65 @49

It's simpler than that.

Donald Trump gauged correctly the bases frustration with the GOP. He stormed out of the gate and got to the right of everyone in the field.

Much ball scratching and failed attempts at triangulation ensued to no avail.

Cruz moved to the right on key issues too late to blunt Trumps advantage.

And here we are with Cruz's latest pathetic move.

Even if Trump doesn't get to 1237 and there is a contested convetion Cruz is simply not going to get the nod.

Trump will either get to slightly more than 1237 or slightly less than 1237 and has enough at large delegates to get to 1237 at the convention.

The nomination is Trumps and Cruz is now just a pathetic spoiler.

And I like Cruz so this is absolutely frustrating as I had hoped there could have been a Trump/Cruz alliance but after this move by Cruz that dream is out the window.

My new dream ticket is

Trump/Cotton or Trump/Sessions but I am leaning more towards Trump/Cotton.

78 The House Armed Services Committee approved a measure Wednesday requiring women to register for the military draft, a move that comes just a few months after the Defense Department lifted all gender-based restrictions on front-line combat units.

In a twist that presages how contentious further debate may be, the author of the amendment voted against his own measure. It passed the committee by a vote of 32-30.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., a former Marine who served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, doesnt support drafting women into combat and hes opposed to opening infantry and special operations positions to women. He said he offered the measure to trigger a discussion about how the Pentagons decision in December to rescind gender restrictions on military service failed to consider whether the exclusion on drafting women also should be lifted.

82 When New Jersey lost it's biggest taxpayer rumors started saying six of the top ten taxpayers in the state either had already moved to other states or were in the process of doing so.

Democrats said in response "what? me worry?". And, like the sidebar article says, they've kept up handing out pensions to each other, with many Democrats getting three or even four public pensions. They're rich from these payments.

This isn't ending well, and the end is coming this year or next. Christie is trying hard to exit the state and get to D.C. before the crash, and I don't blame him, but he could have stopped this crap (or at least made a big deal about it) and he didn't.

99 Good morning, Morons!

There are no changes in the polling today, but since it is pretty obvious that Trump is going to be the nominee, it is a good time to review what the general election matchup really means.

There were comments yesterday like "Trump is only down 3!" that are being tossed around out of context. We as a party have decided that Trump is going to be who we go up against Hillary with. I'm only going over the facts of the situation as they stand now, so people can be aware of the work that needs to be done by the Trump campaign to win in November.

The RCP average is currently made up of 6 polls from established polling firms. All of these polls are pretty solid from a sampling standpoint, with over 1000 samples in all of them.

Trump is losing by an average of 8.5%, outside the margin of error. Here are the individual polls:

Suffolk: Clinton +11, 1000 likely voters, 4 days old
Battleground: Clinton +3, 1000 likely voters, 8 days old
NBC: Clinton +11, 1000 registered voters, 13 days old
Fox: Clinton +7, 1021 registered voters, 14 days old
CBS: Clinton +10, 1098 registered voters, 15 days old
Marist: Clinton +9, 1066 registered voters, 27 days old

Some of the bigger names like Gallup and Rassmussen are not polling the general election matchup yet, so when they finally start to do so, that will be an important data point.

I've been keeping an eye on how the RCP is tracking to 2012 and Trump has been showing a consistently worse performance than Romney did at this point in the cycle. While it is easy to point out that Romney had consolidated the party at this point in 2012, keep in mind that Obama had as well. Clinton is nudging 50% in all of these polls, except for Battleground, despite having negatives at 54%.

Trump's negatives are at unheard of levels in all of these polls. They probably will recover to a degree as the GOP starts to rally around him. But that will be tempered by his negative style. He will be hammering Clinton for the next few months, and she is going to be playing the victim card.

Both of these strategies are very well established by each candidate and they are both very effective in using them. We will see if Trump can drive up Clinton's negatives any further, or if they are baked into the cake now.

I suspect that the down ballot fear of the Republicans is probably overblown. Their problems in the Senate are structural, and Trump at the top of the ticket doesn't help or harm them. Some of them, like Mark Kirk, are certain losers. Some, like Pat Toomey, may manage to squeak through.

One final thought, one untapped voting block that Trump might be able to mine is the pissed off Bernie voters. Bernie has received more votes than Trump now, and not all of them are committed Democrats. An appeal to "clean up Washington" could work with them to get them to switch sides. However, they are mostly Millennials and they are very vulnerable to the racist charge. Winning them over will be difficult for Trump given how he has been framed to date, and how he will be framed by the MSM going forward.

That fight is already over. Constitutional conservatism lost. It was probably never a core belief in the party base to begin with. Hell, even the people who have been preaching it for years (e.g. Rush) wouldn't stand up for it in the face of the Trump movement. Those that did (e.g. Jonah Goldberg) were swept under by the tide.

You are right in a way, but the fight for the party is between the Trump supporters and the establishment who are going to still be holding seats in Congress when it is all over. Conservatives are outside and marginalized now.

151 Anyone here following GamerGate?

It looks like the woman whose shenanigans started the whole thing - Zoe Quinn - may be behind some (a lot) of the anonymous trolls harassing people.

Apparently there's a woman who started a project/software to unmask anonymous trolls, and Zoe Quinn called her up begging here to stop it. Quinn claimed she actually knew the names of the people who made
anonymous threats against her (which gave her fame, a book deal, etc.) and they really didn;t mean it blah blah blah. The woman refused to cease her project, so - get this - within an hour of speaking w/Quinn she is bombarded by anonymous death threats on her website and her personal email that she had given Quinn.

Seems like the whole GamerGate brouhaha may have been a giant hoax, that the women harassed by gamers may have orchestrated the harassment themselves?

By itself that is a true statement, however, DoD Directive 1330.9 requires any State Side installation to keep tobacco prices within 5% of the local prices. This gives the Exchanges what is in essence free money as the DOD does not pay any taxes on tobacco products, but they keep the price the same as civilian retailers who do pay taxes on cigarettes. In other words, they pocket the difference. Yes, it is a scam.

I don't think it's that "Constitutional Conservatism" isn't a guiding principle this primary season

it's just not the guiding principle.

People have heard the "I believe in the Constitution" call from almost every single Republican politician in DC as they curl into little balls and let the Dims kick them around or actively help the Dims destroy the Constitution.

This year they wanted a fighter - which I believe Cruz is.

But, they also wanted someone who is genuine - which Cruz made some real strategical errors- which called into question Cruz' genuine character.

Like him or not- Trump has been Trump.

The writing has been on the wall for a few weeks.

And as I said yesterday, I would have a hard time voting for Cruz today in the primary.

Mainly cuz I want it over now and to start concentrating on Hillary! and avoid further splits.

222 Unpopular opinion on the Hastert sentencing:

It's an abomination. The crime that he was convicted of - "structuring" - is inane, but that's the law. However, he wasn't sentenced for moving money around. He was sentenced for unproven allegations of sexual molestation.

I don't care that the statute of limitations on his sex crimes have lapsed. If we don't like that, then change the law. Nor do I care that it might be difficult or impossible to get beyond reasonable doubt on those charges. That's how the system works.

I can't believe what just happened: a man has been sentenced to extra prison time because a judge thinks that he committed other crimes - crimes that he was not even indicted for, much less convicted for.

And that should scare the hell out of you. Let's say on a really bad day, you have too much to drink and then get into a bar fight. You slug a guy. No serious harm done, but the cops are called and you get taken to jail. First offense, you'd probably get probation. But wait: at the time of sentencing, your psycho ex-girlfriend from ten years ago comes in and says that you abused her. The judge listens to her and decides that you need to spend a year in jail for that.

224 Eh, I'm in a fatalistic mood this morning Votermom. We've been told for years that if we just give people a choice for a conservative, then they will vote and support finally for a rational candidate who will change the direction of the country.

Well we can't believe that any longer. We had 4 candidates who are pretty close to that ideological ideal, and the last one standing has a 100% voting record.

It didn't matter. So I view strategy as a secondary topic. Trump had very little strategy, but he dominated by tapping into the emotions of the electorate. And they voted outside of the niche groups that we thought were important (conservative, evangelical).

Posted by: Dave in Fla at April 28, 2016 09:14 AM (b85As)

225 One final thought, one untapped voting block that Trump might be able to mine is the pissed off Bernie voters.

Regardless of who the Republican nominee is, they will not draw in registered democratic voters. These voters will stay home. If they stay home whoever is the Republican nominee has a chance to win against Hillary. Trump's weak numbers against Hillary are because he is such an easy target for her to gin up her base and get them to voter for her even if they don't like her. Now a strategy for Trump against Hillary would be to not personally attack her. Instead attack her using her own words, the words of people harmed by her (and there are a lot) and also use Sanders stuff against her. This would reinforce every issue democrats have against her and they would stay home.

232 What is amazing to me is that in the face of over half of the American
electorate voting for an unAmerican red-diaper baby TWICE , that somehow
a call to patriotism and Constitutional conservatism in a single
election was going to suddenly reverse the 40 + years of America's
death-plummet into collectivism.

Which was aided and abetted by
(R)s championing Conservatism with their mouths while voting away chunks
of liberty at every turn.

Maybe the obvious needs to be stated.
People out there (the real world) do not think like the conservatives
in here (AOSHQ). They. Do Not . Think. Like. You.

And yet they vote. What to do?

The old tactics of browbeating them into "bein' more patriotic" is NOT a winner.

The
Progs, (R and D) have been playing the long game of incrementalism. You
can't shortcut your way out of the mess that they have made. Is their a
solution? I don't know. Maybe. After a long painful, period of re-education through hunger and deprivation.

But Cruz was always going to lose. Just like McCain, Just like Romney.
He is a great thinker and a solid conservative and I hope that he is named Chief Justice one day.

He is not the presidential candidate for 2016. This decision just proves it.

241 Unpopular opinion on the Hastert sentencing:

It's an abomination. The crime that he was convicted of -
"structuring" - is inane, but that's the law. However, he wasn't
sentenced for moving money around. He was sentenced for unproven
allegations of sexual molestation.

I don't care that the statute of limitations on his sex crimes have
lapsed. If we don't like that, then change the law. Nor do I care that
it might be difficult or impossible to get beyond reasonable doubt on
those charges. That's how the system works.

I can't believe what just happened: a man has been sentenced to
extra prison time because a judge thinks that he committed other crimes -
crimes that he was not even indicted for, much less convicted for.

And that should scare the hell out of you. Let's say on a really bad

Thank you for bringing this up. Astonishing that all news reports are about unproven allegations and not how a first offense conviction, that for anyone else, would have been a fine and probation.

Is anyone going after the extortionist(s)? No? So we get more 30-year unproven allegations. There is no statute of limitations on murder -- they couldn't find an accusation of that, I guess.

Eh. Politics is convincing people and that means at an emotional level.

Reagan didn't just get up on stage and make an intellectual argument-

he touched people's hearts and appealed to them on an emotional level more than on an intellectual one.

Unfortunately, Cruz couldn't do that. And didn't make the arguments for conservatism and himself as it's avatar to the people in a way that engaged them.

Like many very intelligent people, he thought the arguments were so self-evident that he didn't have to make them to the people but rather just spout them out-

that's why his numbers didn't grow but rather shrank.

Kitchen table stuff...Cruz barely touched it.

Trump wallows in it.

It's not difficult to see why things wound up this way.

The Justice Department announced a plan to throw $1.75 million at young criminals in hopes that they don't become adult criminals. But you'd never know that given the linguistic fog the DOJ has conjured up.

A press release issued earlier this week describes a new $1.75 million grant program as designed 'to help young people involved in the justice system find jobs and housing.'

Wait, you ask, if these young people are 'involved' in the justice system, doesn't that mean they already have jobs? Like, say, as a trainee in the dispatcher's office, or a desk clerk in the attorney general's office, or maybe a janitor at the local courthouse?

Not exactly. In this case, 'justice-involved youth' is what we're now supposed to call juvenile delinquents, also known as young criminals.

I think that this suspension is evidence that British Jews, while they are overwhelmingly leftists like American Jews, have not taking leave of their senses and lost any sense of self preservation. If a Democrat said something similar, the great majority of American Jews would be rationalizing excuses and blaming Republicans.

At this point she is just running to collect piles of cash. I mean seriously, she paid herself a "salary" of $250,000 out of her campaign funds so far.

I am begging you guys not to believe this. I am sure you are a good decent thoughtful person. The average *registered* democrat isn't. Just like criticism of Trump has been like water off a duck's back on the right - so has her email scandal, Benghazi, and Bill's affairs for her on the left. THEY DON'T CARE. They do care about her wall street ties, they care that she may be "moderate" like Bill, they care that she is not left enough. I do not want this woman anywhere near the White House, which is why I am praying that whoever is the Republican nominee sees the writing on the wall and goes all out to make sure she loses. She won't lose if Republicans run the same talking points they have for the last few years. It won't work. As for the FBI - given Bill and Hillary's past and the number of dead and defamed people that they have left in their wake (and the fact that Obama is running interference for her) the chance that someone will risk everything (and I mean everything) is slim. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think so.

268 I've been solidly anti-Trump for a while now. I'd say that I was Trump-curious last summer and fall. My hope was that once Trump saw that he had a real shot of winning, he'd buckle down and bone up on basic conservative principles. You know, so he'd know how to handle the questions that were definitely coming (e.g., abortion, Iran deal), and how to have the correct impulses on new questions that arose (trannies in the bathroom). I also hoped that he'd develop some discipline and some manners, because as appealing as his shoot-from-the-hip insult-comic style can be when he's taking on SJWs and other enemies of liberty, he needs to soften his image for the general election.

He's done none of those things, of course. The groundwork for a "pivot" to the general should have started six or eight months ago, and it hasn't remotely begun. He doesn't know conservatism from a hole in the ground.

Having said all that... if he's the nominee, the party needs to close ranks and support him. If you cannot in good conscience vote for him, if you think it will put the stain of sin on your soul, okay. But the whole reason that we have soulless, corporate political parties is to elect the person the party nominates. Whether that person is as conservative as Cruz or liberal and insane as Trump, they get that support because *that's the deal*.

It's really too bad Scott Walker decided that Chamber of Commerce $$$ was more important than votes.
Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Good but not plenty. at April 28, 2016 09:28 AM (WVsWD)

It wasn't a meme for me. I came up with it myself after thinking about it. It doesn't refer to ideology (I don't Trump has one, other than Trump) but to some tactics and the relationship between Trump and his core of supporters.

Posted by: chique d'afrique at April 28, 2016 09:33 AM (6bMel)

276 My hope was that once Trump saw that he had a real shot of winning, he'd buckle down and bone up on basic conservative principles.

Our problem is, this same thing can be applied to every republican leader we have. Except for the shoot-from-the-hip style.

They have no principles; only self interest. And they despise us.

We are where we are, with the front runner we have, because of this.

Posted by: mustbequantum at April 28, 2016 09:38 AM (MIKMs)

295 Having said all that... if he's the nominee, the party needs to close ranks and support him.
Posted by: Masturbatin' Pete at April 28, 2016 09:30 AM (26zxJ)

Let's not get carried away with the stain of sin thing. It's not that dramatic.

But I agree. If he wins fair and square, I.e., 1237+ on first ballot or winning subsequent ballots, they have to support him. Because them's the rules. Plus the GOPe created juggernaut candidate Trump, so they had better get behind him.

----------

It is a consequence of the choice being offered. The Trump supporters have been telling people like me for months to accept reality. This is also an unfortunate reality. Trump is highly disliked by those who aren't in the party. The independents and democrats have driven his negatives into the 70% range. People who will vote don't like Hillary, but they don't like Trump more.

I think that the GOP will end up supporting him, hell they supported McCain for God's sake. But he has a lot of work to do to get the independents he will need to win states like Florida.

Last Thursday, the first COSTCO in Oklahoma opened. The number of women who looked like this chick or worse, who had multiple kids with them proves my point. Same point can be proved by going to any Welfare Office or other such place.

So just remember, being a fat, ugly, obnoxious soul shredding bitch does not preclude one from also being a great big old whore.

Can you please stop this? People, including myself, have detailed subtantive reasons for not supporting him, yet some of you keep on going back to the embarrassment or style thing. It may be true for some, but certainly not all, and not most anti-Trumpers here.

This is a disingenuous statement.

And yes, it isn't too much to ask that a man in his 70s doesn't throw tantrums like a toddler. I bet most of you would not tolerate that type of behavior of it was some regular Joe who wasn't a billionaire celebrity.

It is? Obama has similar numbers, and he's been a train wreck for years now.

This could be the new floor.

And supposedly these same polls show katshitt as being the second Coming of Christ. And people know nothing about this choice.

-----

No Obama didn't have similar numbers. You can go look at the 2012 number on RCP. Even after the "Summer of Romney's Dog", Obama only managed to drive Romney's negatives up into the 50s.

Look, I spent a year living with polling numbers in 2012. I watch polls a lot, it is a hobby. It isn't my fault that they are what they are. The fact is that Trump matches up badly against Hillary. Kasich does well against her because he doesn't have the same negatives Cruz and especially Trump have. They aren't reflecting Kasich support.

People are free to disbelieve the polls, but I tried that in 2006 and 2012, and it turned out badly both times.

376 Saw on VNN today where Verizon has a strike going, and the union guys are sabotaging the Verizon facilities. This reminded me of something I saw years ago that still elicits a chuckle...

My career was spent as a network engineer. And one thing we spent a lot of time doing was dealing with "the phone company", whether it be AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, whatever. This because if you have a network you will be leasing your facilities (circuits and such) from whoever the local telco happens to be.

Back in the day there was a popular trade publication called "Data Communications" that nearly all of us read. One time someone there decided to do a study on the frequency of "trouble tickets" opened with the various telephone companies. And they made an interesting discovery.

There were in fact times when our networks operated almost perfectly, with almost no trouble tickets needing to be opened with the telcos. But this only happened during one circumstance; when the Communications Workers of America union was out on strike.

Needless to say, we all found this little datum to be hugely amusing (as well as no surprise at all), although the CWA guys did not. The more things change...

No one is saying every Trump supporter is racist. A majority are not racist. There are those, like myself, who want our borders enforced for the sake of our sovereignty. Then there are those who want a giant wall to keep all those dirty wetbacks out and to, as Ace said, stop those mexicans from shitting all their beans and drugs on our country.
Posted by: Arson Wells at April 28, 2016 10:06 AM (/E+t2)

Yeah, sorry, I'm not buying it.

You're way too quick to attribute racism to the cause. If you don't understand why people don't want illegal mexicans invading the country, that's one thing, but except for the hopelessly foolish who permeate EVERY candidate's fan base, race has nothing to do with it.

Nothing.

3rd wave feminism/progressive activism is a mental disorder.
From the video it looks like she is not playing with a full deck, so she's found a purpose and outlet for expressing her rage at the world for whatever really troubles her. I'm also going to guess that most people on campus, especially administrators and professors, give her a lot of space because it's easier than attempting to contain her (an obese, crazy person could do damage).

That's my guess, anyway...

428 We have free will. Do what your heart and conscience says is right and don't worry about what anyone else says or thinks.

----------

Here here. As I have said, for the most part, I suspect that the Trump supporters and I agree on many things - though obviously not everything. I think they are wrong to support Trump over Cruz, and that Cruz would accomplish what they say they want accomplished much more than Trump. I will not vote for a pro-government liberal just because he is not Hillary and just because he has a catchy slogan (which admittedly is a great slogan).

So we may not agree on a candidate this year. If you want to carry Trump to the finish line, you will do it without me, and without many conservatives. That is the choice made.

Perhaps we will find common ground again in the next election. But in 2016 - Trump is a bridge too far for this conservative.

Obama is getting his people on the boards and in executive leadership of so many large US corporation that we will be feeling his progressive influence for many years to come. That's wht these companies are getting all political - they've hired Obama cronies (no doubt to curry favor w/the WH) who are then well-placed to jump into the latest progressive cause with boycotts or implementing the latest social change. Hi chique,

Well, that's the thing.

A good campaign adapts to the circumstances around it and adopts successful tactics.

Republicans are lousy at this because- I guess consultants keep them in their little poll approved/GOPe mandated cages.

Were I Cruz-

I would've done two things and I believe I was talking about this in Dec-Jan-

1) Kitchen table, kitchen table, kitchen table and talk about how my policies would help American families

2) I would have adopted Trump's strong/harsh statement tactics but against Obama and Hillary!

I would've gone as far as I could, made statements that guaranteed me airtime just like Trump

but about the Democrats.

You can still be dignified but take the wood to the Dims as harshly as possible.

It would've been a game changer. Let Trump go after fellow Republicans- you go after Hillary!/Obama in a way the news programs can't refuse.

Cruz never adapted.

Sad to hear you won't vote for Trump, but whatevs.

What was the breaking point for you?

And no, I'm not trying to convince you.

I have my own theory on what is going on with Trump as it mirrors another cultural phenom very closely.

If so, Trumpism will be the future for a while before co-opted.

I'd rather envision some little neck bearded SWJ going where no man has gone before and vanishing for good inside one of Jabba's folds (hell, there might be, like 6 guys who are permanently stuck in there) than get into another useless fight about Trump.

447 I don't know what Conservative means, because I'm a LIV Trumpster. I may be a racist too, I've learned here, because I'm for enforcing our existing immigration laws and that would have disparate impact.

You see, I don't know what Conservative means because it may still mean that the USA should be the World's cop and intervene in places like Iraq and Libya and Syria. That's what the NeoCons want, no? The Bush family, Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Karl Rove ... even Hilllary.

I don't know what Conservative means because it may still mean promoting the interests of Big Business, even though it's now aligned with elements of Big Gov and increasingly with the Cultural Left. That's what the Chamber of Commerce crowd wants. People like Paul Ryan and Karl Rove and dare I say her name, Carly Fiorina.

I don't know what Conservative means because it may still mean being against all abortion as shibboleth, even though this position is problematic for a Presidential candidate. People like Ted Cruz.

Lastly, I don't know what Conservative means because it may mean being a Constitutional Conservative, which I don't understand at all. Mark Levin's rants go right over my little head. All I get is that it's a way to say that you want to turn back the clock somehow, but surely there must be more to it than that.
