'The Favourite' - 2013

Omar Rayyan

The princess had raised the creature from the veriest hatchling. She doted on it (though, being conscious of the responsibilities of her station as well as the advantages, young as she was, the Princess made very sure that the dyrhathri, - named Slipper - was very well behaved even when she was not there to curb its exuberant nature) and Slipper in turn was devoted to the princess. Certainly, no-one need worry for the Princess' safety when out with her favourite playmate. Slipper took quite a shine to the court painter, though it must be said the sentiment was not entirely returned.

I'm sure that there would be some mechanism to come up with a test that would realistically gage where a child should be on the educational continuum at the end of each year.

Agencies are about to take a big hit since agencies are leveraged to the hilt. They killed the geese that laid the golden eggs. Coal industry is just one of many. Been going on for a long time but lately has picked up speed.

"We weren't listening, we didn't react fast enough, give us a chance to fix what's broken."
"Come hear Tim Wise, author of 'White Like Me' discuss his excruciating guilt over being white..."
This crap was EVERYWHERE down there.
Why would anyone send their kid to Mizzou?

I'm guessing that the morning meetings in the development department start with handing out that day's ration of eye heroin. Then the ritual weeping begins.

The emails show that some huge dollar donors said yeah, so that gift? Not so much. My father did university level development work for many, many years. Once gifts start to go? You don't get them back.

118 David Spade has a funny bit where he talks about how the scales are really unbalanced. He presents that he brings to the table that he is somewhat funny, he's a nice guy, a pretty good career , has a couple of movies and a couple ongoing movie projects, is somewhat wealthy , nice house , lots of celebrity friends , good family, etc. The only thing the girl has to bring to the table is she's hot. And she's still the one that's making the judgement on him.

If there is any recommendation for ADHD drugs in a kid's school records, the parents HAVE to put them on them, or else be accused of some type of neglect. 147 Last week, Rasmussen Reports gave voters the option of staying home on Election Day if Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are the big party nominees, and six percent (6%) said thats what they intend to do for now. Clinton and Trump were tied with 38% support each; 16% said they would vote for some other candidate, and two percent (2%) were undecided.

But Trump edges slightly ahead if the stay-at-home option is removed. Trump also now does twice as well among Democrats as Clinton does among Republicans.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely U.S. Voters finds Trump with 41% support to Clintons 39%.

Now I am not humping this Poll. I am sure many if not most Polls still show the lying bitch ahead, but these are volatile times and anything can and probably will occur between now and November.

I disagree.

If we returned to a feudal system, strictly divided between the nobles and the peasants, keeping government out would work.

With a modern system, it's less expensive to educate the children of the poor than to build the prisons to hold them later. Trouble is, government does a shit job of educating.

The answer is that government (taxpayers collectively) pay but the individual parents are responsible for the education - as long as the parent gets the job done and supplies the taxpayers value for their money.

And you have the state negotiating directly with the teachers union which does NOT want to have overly restrictive tests. And the state/union relationship is not an adversarial one.

Hell, states draft tests all the time to gauge performance and there are few if any real consequences for teachers if they miss those marks.

I'm also reasonably sure that, in Detroit, a significant number of parents really don't give a shit about their kid's educations. A $25k voucher would be a payday for them as they find the cheapest shittiest "teacher" they can find and pocket the rest.

And you have the state negotiating directly with the teachers union which does NOT want to have overly restrictive tests. And the state/union relationship is not an adversarial one.

I'm also reasonably sure that, in Detroit, a significant number of parents really don't give a shit about their kid's educations. A $25k voucher would be a payday for them as they find the cheapest shittiest "teacher" they can find and pocket the rest.

Posted by: VA GOP Sucks at May 02, 2016 10:49 AM (PFy0L)

A couple of things...

First, with this voucher program, there is no "teacher's union". There are no schools. Nothing. Nobody teaching the kids under the voucher program needs any certification or training from anyone or any agency.

As to the parents who don't give a shit, they would if it meant money in their pocket.

With the vouchers, a single welfare mother of four school age kids could have an income of $100K a year, if she wanted to homeschool. Of course, she would need to declare this as income, which would take her off of welfare, which is an additional savings to the state.

If he kids pass the test each year, she continues to get the money. She can do it herself, hire help or whatever.

I believe most single mothers in this situation will rise to the occasion out of self interest. I believe that instead of sitting in front of the tv or running wild through the streets, the kids will be at the kitchen table learning and being smacked upside the head when they slack off.

Because of money.

You have a far kinder, more pollyanna outlook on human nature than most conservatives would consider warranted.

Of COURSE a welfare mom would pocket the money. Of COURSE tests would be written to the lowest possible standard. Of COURSE politicians would use this to buy votes.

Your system relies on human nature to do the right thing. Human nature isn't like that. Human nature does the selfish thing. The system that needs to be in place is one where two greedy selfish bastards have to fight against each other to balance it all out. That's the underlying genius of the Constitution, and that's what we need to apply to education. Handing some crack ho a $25k check and trusting her to do the right thing is flushing $25k down the toilet.

284 Fasting. So, yes, we do it. As congregations once a month. We take the monies we would have spent on the meals in that time and give it as a Fast Offering. These tend to go directly to the poor and needy members within the local area.

As an individual, I also participate in fasts with, for instance, family members in times of particular need--like before a surgery or something. As I teenager I remember one of the purposes of a family fast (these don't happen often) was to pray for my Grandma to pass away--she was in the final stages of cancer and was in a good deal of pain.

Fasting isn't something required. I didn't do it while pregnant. My BIL has hypoglycemia and doesn't do it...Usually, I just skip breakfast and lunch and have an early-ish dinner. It's a monthly reminder to me that my temporal body doesn't have to be in charge of EVERYTHING.

I gave up the show last year because I'm primarily a reader of the books. If I were him, I would've waited until after I finished the series to sell the rights for a tv show, but who could turn down the lure of so much money I suppose?

Posted by: Serenity Now! at May 02, 2016 11:24 AM (BDZWU)

287 jwest, what you are proposing has some analogy with healthcare. In essence, the federal govt has given the uninsured (i.e. students in your scenario) a subsidy to shop for insurance in the exchanges, and then to choose their place and time of receiving actual healthcare services. The competitive elements of the healthcare system such as concierge practices, work well to a point, but only in a cherry picking sort of way. If everybody were to seek their office-based care from a concierge practice there would be no distinction. The private school success model would suffer the same fate. It might work as an alternative to public schools, but if you voucher everybody into a school choice program you lose that distinction.

In today's America, the state (classically defined) has become sufficiently senile and incompetent that it isn't even capable of looking after its own best interests any longer. It needs to be put in conservatorship, have control of its affairs removed, and kept from causing any harm to itself or others, until it finally passes away.

Posted by: Brother Cavil at May 02, 2016 11:17 AM (9krrF)

I don't know where you're getting these numbers, but they appear to be what the school districts put out to fool people.

What they're showing is an "operational budget" which basically just includes salaries and immediate expenses.

The full budget is fairly easy to calculate by taking the total amount of money the school district takes in divided by the number of pupils.

For Detroit, the last audited information (2012) has the income of $1,237,494,733. Total students were just under 48,000.

The CATO Institute did some work on this, exposing what school districts actually spend per pupil. Washington DC was the highest, well over $30K per kid per yr. Baltimore was just behind.

Sure, but the concept that a better performing private school would not somehow be adversely affected by a massive influx of unmotivated students from dis-engaged families is what I was trying to point out, as an analog to the shift in the (anything but free) marketplace in healthcare that is occurring regionally and locally in response to Obamacare.

347 >> This bullshite keeps going on and on...

The Trot end of Labour is natively anti-Israel, and the party as a whole made a deal with the devil under Blair regarding Mideast immigration.

The end result is that in many urban constituencies where they've congregated, you have to spout the appropriate pieties to get elected to Parliament.

Naz Shah - one of the first of the recent batch to get 'outed' - beat George Galloway in Bradford. You don't beat Gorgeous George in Bradford without copious doses of Jewbash, whether visible or subtle. Just ain't happening.

By most accounts Labour's due to suffer a bloodbath in the upcoming local elections. UKIP's supposed to eat their lunch in the north and in Wales, and now that the SNP has taken away all the Trots in Scotland they might even lose second place up there to the Tories.

Curiously, though, Sadiq Khan's managed thus far to stay on top of the leaderboard for the London mayoralty. He claims he'll be the most Jew-friendly Muslim in history (okay, that's not the exact quote, but that's the spin) despite certain past connections. The Tory candidate's an enviro toff without half the wit of Boris which doesn't help.

349 "... a better performing private school would not somehow be adversely affected by a massive influx of unmotivated students from dis-engaged families..."

The competition for these kids' dollars would be tremendous. Private schools would have to fight for each kid they want.

I predict that most "schools" wouldn't be more than a few groups of classes with 10 or so kids in each. The vast majority would be homeschooled or home-tutored.

Really, the biggest problem with this whole idea would be for the city to manage the influx of middle to upper middle class families moving into the city. Within two to five years, Detroit would be one the most expensive cities to live in.

Exactly, they weren't embarrassed to begin with because the party *is* anti-Semitic, they just don't appreciate having it made too obvious. The truth is I'm surprised they are even suspending these people, given the assumption that anti-Semitism is fine-and-dandy with a significant number of Brits. If I thought it reflected a changing and more positive attitude I'd be thrilled, but it doesn't seem terribly likely.

Same type of thing was predicted by proponents of Obamacare.

All of the newly insured will quickly find a primary care physician who will act as their "medical home", efficiently meeting their every need, marshalling resources on their patients' behalf, nipping potentially costly diseases in the bud, thus saving gazillions of dollars. Newly graduated physicians will flock to the newly respectable specialty of Family Medicine.

The sad reality is that none of that happened. Waiting times to see primary care providers is up, the likelihood of seeing a non-physician (PA or NP) is up, the nipping of diseases in the bud was a pipe dream and health care spending climbs ever upward with no tangible or measurable improvement in health.

I expect the same thing would happen in education with a subsidized voucher program.

The best chance for success would be a revitalization of the Catholic school system. As their labor model shifted from teaching orders to lay teachers, their costs rose, but still could not match the pay and benefits of the public school systems.

Smaller families, stupid policies by the dioceses and the cut in real incomes all played a part.

With vouchers, the schools could again compete AND retain or enhance an ability to maintain standards (be a shit bird, and it's good bye).
