Well I have missed an hour's worth of posts due to haggling with
robo-phones trying to get my insurance charges straightened out. The the
people handling retirement accounts for my old company are still
charging me for my heath insurance, including vision and dental which I
no longer have coverage for. And it is quite a chunk of change.

If there is any recommendation for ADHD drugs in a kid's school records, the parents HAVE to put them on them, or else be accused of some type of neglect. Step-granddaughter is in that space right now. I haven't figured a way to get her out of it because yeah, she is a hyper-preteen, but nothing that would justify tranking her up.

I disagree.
If we returned to a feudal system, strictly divided between the nobles and the peasants, keeping government out would work.
With a modern system, it's less expensive to educate the children of the poor than to build the prisons to hold them later. Trouble is, government does a shit job of educating.
The answer is that government (taxpayers collectively) pay but the individual parents are responsible for the education - as long as the parent gets the job done and supplies the taxpayers value for their money.

Hell, states draft tests all the time to gauge performance and there are few if any real consequences for teachers if they miss those marks.
I'm also reasonably sure that, in Detroit, a significant number of parents really don't give a shit about their kid's educations. A $25k voucher would be a payday for them as they find the cheapest shittiest "teacher" they can find and pocket the rest.

A couple of things...
First, with this voucher program, there is no "teacher's union". There are no schools. Nothing. Nobody teaching the kids under the voucher program needs any certification or training from anyone or any agency.
As to the parents who don't give a shit, they would if it meant money in their pocket.
With the vouchers, a single welfare mother of four school age kids could have an income of $100K a year, if she wanted to homeschool. Of course, she would need to declare this as income, which would take her off of welfare, which is an additional savings to the state.
If he kids pass the test each year, she continues to get the money. She can do it herself, hire help or whatever.
I believe most single mothers in this situation will rise to the occasion out of self interest. I believe that instead of sitting in front of the tv or running wild through the streets, the kids will be at the kitchen table learning and being smacked upside the head when they slack off.
Because of money.

As an individual, I also participate in fasts with, for instance, family members in times of particular need--like before a surgery or something. As I teenager I remember one of the purposes of a family fast (these don't happen often) was to pray for my Grandma to pass away--she was in the final stages of cancer and was in a good deal of pain.
Fasting isn't something required. I didn't do it while pregnant. My BIL has hypoglycemia and doesn't do it...Usually, I just skip breakfast and lunch and have an early-ish dinner. It's a monthly reminder to me that my temporal body doesn't have to be in charge of EVERYTHING.
Glenn Beck has got to be one heck of a Sunday School teacher. Whenever politics is brought up in church, Mormons are like those seagulls in Finding Nemo but instead of saying "Mine, mine, mine" they are like "No, no, no".

I gave up the show last year because I'm primarily a reader of the books. The show seems to be cutting out a lot of important plot lines and characters that will be important at the end if GRRM ever finishes the series. Seems doubtful at this point, I know. If I were him, I would've waited until after I finished the series to sell the rights for a tv show, but who could turn down the lure of so much money I suppose?

In today's America, the state (classically defined) has become sufficiently senile and incompetent that it isn't even capable of looking after its own best interests any longer. I don't know where you're getting these numbers, but they appear to be what the school districts put out to fool people.
What they're showing is an "operational budget" which basically just includes salaries and immediate expenses.
The full budget is fairly easy to calculate by taking the total amount of money the school district takes in divided by the number of pupils.
For Detroit, the last audited information (2012) has the income of $1,237,494,733. Total students were just under 48,000.
The CATO Institute did some work on this, exposing what school districts actually spend per pupil. Washington DC was the highest, well over $30K per kid per yr. Baltimore was just behind.

I hate to say "I question the timing," but....well. The Brits have been almost proud of their anti-Semitism for a *long* time. Just how egregious were these comments that they felt something had to be done? Who benefits, besides the Jews because they clearly aren't Parliament's actual priority, by quashing this now. Or is it that implicitly believing those things was okay but stating them explicitly is embarrassing to the party?

I cannot fathom what happened to Ted's campaign when it simply fell off a cliff and decided that becoming a traveling revival in a tent was a way to win.
And this is coming from me, a devout Christian who has no problems with speaking my faith in public. I also don't use it as a crutch.

Curiously, though, Sadiq Khan's managed thus far to stay on top of the leaderboard for the London mayoralty. He claims he'll be the most Jew-friendly Muslim in history (okay, that's not the exact quote, but that's the spin) despite certain past connections. The Tory candidate's an enviro toff without half the wit of Boris which doesn't help.

Incidentally, in the last 24 hours I've seen polls with Cruz having a 15% lead in Hoosierville and with T. rump having a 15% lead. So a 30 point spread. Add in the margin of error and I'm reasonably certain that one poll or the other will be within 50 points of the actual result.

The competition for these kids' dollars would be tremendous. Private schools would have to fight for each kid they want.
I predict that most "schools" wouldn't be more than a few groups of classes with 10 or so kids in each. The vast majority would be homeschooled or home-tutored.
Really, the biggest problem with this whole idea would be for the city to manage the influx of middle to upper middle class families moving into the city. Within two to five years, Detroit would be one the most expensive cities to live in.

Exactly, they weren't embarrassed to begin with because the party *is* anti-Semitic, they just don't appreciate having it made too obvious. The truth is I'm surprised they are even suspending these people, given the assumption that anti-Semitism is fine-and-dandy with a significant number of Brits. If I thought it reflected a changing and more positive attitude I'd be thrilled, but it doesn't seem terribly likely.

Same type of thing was predicted by proponents of Obamacare.
All of the newly insured will quickly find a primary care physician who will act as their "medical home", efficiently meeting their every need, marshalling resources on their patients' behalf, nipping potentially costly diseases in the bud, thus saving gazillions of dollars. Newly graduated physicians will flock to the newly respectable specialty of Family Medicine.
The sad reality is that none of that happened. Waiting times to see primary care providers is up, the likelihood of seeing a non-physician (PA or NP) is up, the nipping of diseases in the bud was a pipe dream and health care spending climbs ever upward with no tangible or measurable improvement in health.
I expect the same thing would happen in education with a subsidized voucher program.

The best chance for success would be a revitalization of the Catholic school system. As their labor model shifted from teaching orders to lay teachers, their costs rose, but still could not match the pay and benefits of the public school systems.
Smaller families, stupid policies by the dioceses and the cut in real incomes all played a part.
With vouchers, the schools could again compete AND retain or enhance an ability to maintain standards (be a shit bird, and it's good bye).
