Whether it's "Socialism," "Communism," "Fascism," or whatever they want to call it, the underlying theme is that the Government not only can, but should, tell you exactly how to live your life- how your children should be reared, what food you should eat and how much, how you should prepare for various risks. All of these are things which should absolutely be beyond the purview of the government.

Call me a dreamer, but I think we should shoot for a higher standard.
I believe there are people out there who are not scumbags that truly care about the country and who would like to run for office. However, because of the status quo of the system, it's impossible for these non-scumbags to do so.
In the absence of good and decent people, you end up with scumbags who are looking at office as a way to wealth, and scumbags who have wealth and are just trying to satisfy their egos.
Touching back on the 60 Minutes story about fundraising, who but a scumbag would spend the majority of their time begging for money?
The system needs to change. This is not what the Founders had in mind, but we can't duplicate what they had in that era. A new formula needs to be developed that attracts the best people and keeps the scumbags at bay.

Actually, if you go back in American History, you'll find the slide to Big Government began really early, and never really abated. The difference is that we can look back at specific events and say "Wow, that was a huge jump toward Big Government!" and we lose sight of the littler things.
I don't know that there's an answer, really. A large portion of the human race seems to want to be ruled; they want Big Government to "protect" them, never realizing that such protection comes at the cost of Freedom. We need to give the elected officials (people we have the ability to change) an incentive other than patriotism to work long hours and take shit from every special interest group in the country.
I have outlined a compensation plan numerous times here that not only gives the elected officials a reasonable salary, but also gives them a large bonus if they complete their budgets on time and within a set guideline of spending.
People work best when it's in their own interest.
Private industry has known this for hundreds of years. It's time we adopt it for Washington.

Enough goodies and incentives. They will be bought and bribed within that new system within a year, and whatever organization grades them on their budget will give them a passing grade for a kickback.
Better yet, gambling sites would put wagers on which officials would balance their budgets on time, and based on where the money went they'd throw it one way or the other.
What needs to be done is the states need more power and the federal government needs less.

Except here in the People's Republic, any substantial renovation will trigger a property tax reassessment. Prop. 13 limits the rate at which the Reds can jack up property tax unless there's a sale or substantial renovation. So accepting the mayor's baksheesh could easily raise their taxes tenfold, since those houses have been in their families for generations, and probably force them to sell to get out from under the suddenly imposed massive burden. (They're mostly gardeners and such, and not exactly wealthy now.)

The plan I have in mind treats the House as a whole and the Senate as a separate whole.
It needs to be this way for anything major to get done. You need the peer pressure of 430 members not getting their bonus if 5 members don't come around.
As to the goals, the dates for completion of budgets are set in stone and the goal to be reached is only one percentage - probably about 19% or 20% of the previous year's GDP.
You need to go on the previous year's number because it eliminates all the estimating. They can lie about it once, but it comes back to haunt them the next year.
The only way hard choices are going to be made (instead of the current system of giving everyone everything), is by 535 senators and congressmen working in their own best interest.
