Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Mis. Hum.]

I guess it's better than being named Dammit. Welcome aboard to the Pet Thread.
Climb on a piece of furniture get comfy and take it easy.

Interesting pet and animal news

I was recently contacted by a first time dog owner who wanted to acclimate their dog to water. The dog is not a sporting breed which from experience take to water quickly. When young introduce them to puddles, a small swimming pool or a lake. Stay away from streams or rivers with strong current. While conducting research this website came up. I cant argue with any of the advice here.

During the research a couple of videos were found. Now granted both trainers have Labs which take to water like I take to cheese cake. But, they are both good starting points.

So Morons, do you have a pet that swims? What did you do to introduce your friend to water? Did you throw your pet into the water? Did you play fetch by throwing the object into the water? Let's help our Moron friend out today.

Just a reminder, try to keep your dog out of algae. The past 2 summers here in the upper Midwest several dogs have died from the bacteria in the algae. Also if your dog has a weak immune system be careful around small creeks, swamps and marshes where microbes present in the water can cause sickness and/or death. Romping through the great outdoors with your pal is fun, but caution must be taken at times.

Meet the Pet Morons

Catlady sent in this photo. I figured anyone named Catlady would have had at least double digit cats in the photo. I was wrong. They look at home there. Thanks for sharing.

No Frank Zappa names for these 2 characters. Kasper is the German Shepherd Dog and Scout is his buddy, who was rescued. Interesting pose thank you Freaked for the submission.

Sad story about the cat Hobbes, formerly owned by tcn in AK. Seems the poor cat got a hold of a mouse poisoned which poisoned the cat. Mouse/rat poison is some bad stuff. Be careful with it.

Meet a service dog by the name of Woofie. Just Another Anonymous Lurker didn't say what type of service dog it is. Woofie is a Pomchi.

Last but not least is this submission from Peaches. The larger kitty was Henry who has passed on. The smaller cat is Cecil who now is 12. Cute picture, I can see why Peaches had used it for a screen saver shot.

12 The black Lab I used to have was addicted to fetch. Anything, anywhere, all the time. We took her to a local pond and I tossed the ball in, not far but enough that she couldn't just wade. She floundered, did three complete somersaults, then grabbed the ball and brought it back to be thrown again. Couldn't keep her out of the water after that.

18 Heck, I've never had a dog that didn't like water. Even the Pekingese we had when I was a kid. The male (WeeWee, and yes, that's why) used to jump from the bow of my canoe and swim to shore to chase a bobber or a fishing lure.

20 Woo hoo. My two big babies made the photo array. I used an app that turns a photo into a painting. Poppins, my female fluffy Mastiff swims like a fish in the Brandywine creek daily, regardless of the temperature. She beats labs, wiemeraners, and Goldie's to hunting decoys tossed into the creek 150 feet or more from shore. I offered to bring her to another beach, but the hunters were so impressed to see a Masriff swim and retrieve so well, they asked me to please stay. Said their dogs could learn a thing or two. Soft mouth too. Brutus will only go in up to his berries. If he still had them.

22 12 years ago when we got our dog as a pup, I was really scared he was going to drown in our small swimming pool. I know a couple of people whose dogs drowned in manmade pools or ponds, and it really sucks. So, I put him in at the far end, as gently as I could, and made him swim the length of it to the steps. The water was kind of cold too.

He hasn't been in the pool since.

He does love to swim in creeks and tanks, so no major harm done.

Posted by: stace at April 30, 2016 03:09 PM (ozZau)

23 Our male poodles, both standards and toys, did not want anything to do with water EXCEPT snow (the more that got balled up in their fur, the better) and puddles (the muddier, the better).

Our female thought water was for inner consumption only. She earned the nickname 'The Princess' because she was so dainty outside and because she had to have as many pillows, blankets, towels, etc. to sleep on, a la the princess and the pea story. She could barely dent whipped cream with her total weight of 4 pounds but she had to have the most cushion available.

She also HATES water. She does enjoy an occasional ride in the boat, as long as she can lie on the floor with the wind out of her face.

Also, she loves our two kittehs, and can't understand why the feeling isn't mutual, although Miss Spanky tolerates her.

30 Ole loves to wade and dunk his belly in puddles to cool off in hot weather but he is nervous of flowing water or having to swim. and he hates and fears getting a bath which is tough with a 90 lb dog. Luckily he is very short haired and rarely needs one. Or perhaps unluckily since this means we just deal with it on the rare occasion and haven't even tried to convince him baths could be a good thing.

That reminds me of the sweet Jack Russell we had when I was a teen, who also hated water. Granny's farm has a little creek that when running well, you can tube down if you don't mind scraping your butt on the rocks. We had one tube and my sister started off on it. The terrier thought something was wrong and was so worried about her he waded out into the scary water and got onto her lap. We were pretty impressed with his bravery.

38 When Tucker was still under a year (8 mos?), the ex tried taking him in the pool. He swam straight for the edge 3 times. He wanted nothing to do with it.
But, give him a big mud puddle to run in - after the rain has stopped, natch - and he's as happy as a clam.

40 Jane, my dog, loves to swim. There's a creek at the nearby dog park and we go virtually every day. She'll fetch the sticks I throw, and often engages in "piracy", stealing sticks right out of other dog's mouths as they're swimming back. Nothing quite like a tug-of-war between two swimming dogs.

Hi Stace. I never would put the adjective "sweet" in front of the words Jack Russell terrier. They seem like such mean little dogs. I have been told I need one to deal with the rodent population that lives on my hillside. Or feral cats, but that seems cruel bc I have coyotes. I hate the rodents, but I can't leave a bunch of feral cats outdoors and allow any of them to be eaten alive by coyotes.

First time I ever saw a deer swim, my granddaughter and I were out drifting in a canoe on the lake where our cabin is located. Granddaughter asked "What's that thing, Grammy?" and when I turned my head to look, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was so strange. A small doe. She made it all the way across too. 56 Grammie we had a Sven cat to do with Ole dog. Sadly he disappeared.

We'd had pretty good luck with letting cats be indoor/out and then the luck ended. So when I got Boots he had to be strictly indoors. That lasted a few years until last summer when I left the door to the garage open and garage door open as well and Boots decided it was really fun to go outside and play and once he was bound and determined to go out that was that. Hopefully Boots will continue to come in at night and avoid the dangers of outside.

Lol, I hesitated to apply that word to any of that breed too, but my parents got a deal on him because he was the wimp of the litter. he was very sweet to all humans and dogs. Any other animal was to be killed if possible. He chased mule deer into the mountains, and led the other dogs in a charge on a porcupine--treating us to a very expensive emergency vet bill.

The only thing I ever saw him back down from was a Hereford bull.

73 My friend's Jack Russell would also jump into any open car door that he saw and then eat the upholstery. You couldn't get him out of the car because he would go completely bonkers on you. They were quite possibly the stupidest dogs alive at that time.
I always called the two Dammit and Stupid. The reason for this was, out on the farm I would be working and driving my tractor or 4 wheeler and the two dogs insisted on running up, barking insanely at the machine and attempting to bite the tires.I would have to stop or swerve to keep from killing them. So I began yelling, MOVE DAMMIT! GET OUT OF THE WAY STUPID!!!
One day I was driving across the pasture on the 4 wheeler, and going on at a good clip. Stupid came running up and latched on to the left front tire. I promptly ran over him with the bike. (not intentionally, but I couldn't stop. Sowhat couldI do?)
Stupid got up, shook his head, and sneezed.
Then went right back to barking and trying to bite the tire.

True story.

Weirdest thing I ever saw removed from a dog's stomach and intestines was a bra and a couple of pair of thongs. The bra hooks got hung up on the intestinal wall and twisted every which way. When the owner came in to pick up the dog, she wanted to see what it was that the dog had swallowed. When doctor showed her the contents of the bag, she was mortified.

In rural America, it is common for the kids to get to school on a school bus. It is also a thing for some of those farm dogs to chase the school bus. More than a few have been killed by trying to bite the school bus tires as the school bus picks up speed.

=======================

The dog who ate patio stones was a Lab. The dog who ate the bra was a Golden. I think she ate a piece of clothing after that, too, but it passed through. What we surmised about that situation was, the daughter had just gone off to college. The dog and the daughter were inseparable. The dog was eating clothing left in the daughter's hamper. I think the dog just missed the daughter so she ate what smelled like her.

Male, I named Issac (Newton) because he seemed to be the inquisitive, smart one.

Female, was Amelia (Earhart) because she was the explorer, and would get into absolutely everything.

Issac got hit by a car. So much for being the smart one. Cat-naming is hard.

Amelia lived to a ripe old age after being retired to my sister's rural place, when I decided to acquire a resuce whippet--Biscuit. Amelia did not care for Biscuit. Biscuit, it seems, had prior experience with cats and gave Amelia an abundance of personal space. I think Amelia was happier with the change to country life, anyway.

Well in went the collie and he sank like a stone. He was 4o pounds of gristle and five pounds of hair. I had to jump in and save him.

After than he would only stand on the edge of the lake, and sometimes bark "Oh MY GOD WHAT ARE YOU DOING GET OUT OF THERE GET OUT OF THERE NOW" if a retriever went in as they often did (owners brought them to play and train.) He was civic-minded that way.

138 We also have a 2-cat limit in our house. And we have 3 cats. We had "Flurry" and "Bella". After "Bella" passed away, in fact the day she passed away, I adopted a kitten from my Vet's office. Went to pick him up and saw his only surviving sibling still in the cage. The Vet techs practically begged me to adopt them both, but I didn't want to spring that on my wife out of nowhere. She knows that when I lose a pet, I immediately adopt another, always have, but bringing home two kittens on the day our Bella died seemed like too much. So, I brought the Siamese fluff-ball, subsequently named Omaha, home (4 weeks old, bottle and surrogate-fed) and introduced him to the wife. After she was totally enthralled by him, I mentioned his brother, still at the Vet's. I couldn't believe it, she said I should have adopted them both. Called the Vet, picked up "Duke" the next morning. Thus, 3 cats.

Just as background, my sweet Henry was from Ohio, brought him back as a kitten we acquired when we were there for 6 months. The day Obama won in 2008, I spent the entire next day crying. Pulled it together the following day, went out and ran some errands. Came home and Henry, the most robust and doglike cat, only 8 years old, was dead in the middle of the floor. He was the coolest . . . when I got Cecil, who was the size of a dinner roll at the time, Henry would pin him down with one paw and lick Cecil's privates. I was losing my mind over it, until my sister said, "well, sure, that's the tasty part!"

Now I have Baby Zoey, aka asthma kitty, who is, astonishingly, 8 now (didn't think she'd live very long). I wanted to share a picture, she is a full figured girl and quite beautiful, but she said she didn't want a bunch of pervs on the internet seein' her naked.

144 Huh, the hero dog had a heart attack and died the next day in spite of veterinary care. I did not know dogs could have have a heart attack. Somebody needs to smack the idiot headline writer for writing exhaustion if that was not a true COD.

to me exhaustion implied heat exhaustion and preventable with rest and cooling. Sounds more like the dog went in dust laden rubble and over worked his heart trying to get enough oxygen in that slop. Something harder for a handler to prevent IMO. And I need to give Samaritan's Purse a donation, that EQ was a huge disaster.

145 My cat which went to cat heaven lasted 20 years. It was indoor/outdoor cat, never would use a litter box. If it could not be outdoors hunting at night, it would raise so much hell that it wasn't worth trying to keep it in.

148 141 We adopted our tiny kitten, WeaselCat2, from the local shelter and after a few days at home she became very ill, listless and started spitting up blood. Recalling something about the blood belonging on the inside of the cat, I rushed her to the emergency vet where she spent a couple of days in the kitty ICU being treated for a lung parasite. Six years later she's fine but wheezes a little bit.

149 Hey everybody.

One of the things I love about my 10-year-old niece is that she has so much compassion for animals. She practically has an ark at home, she has so many pets, and she even says she'd like to be a vet assistant for a career.

Of course, she's 10... :-)

150 Ole loves to wade and dunk his belly in puddles to cool off in hot weather but he is nervous of flowing water or having to swim.

That's like my Maggie Mae, except she will tolerate an inside bath... knowing full well she'll get to do a watershake after getting out of the tub. Soaking me and the bathroom.

Even after being toweled off in the tub, her regular lenght coat still holds a few gallons.

151 Ronster, its usually true that a smart cat does fine being outside and yup trying to change the dynamic with a cat that wants to be out is nearly impossible.

But as I age its just too hard losing the cats that get behind the learning curve and don't make it past 2 or 3 years old. We get bull snakes which seem to keep the rodents under control in the hay shed.

172 Have a problem with two small Chihuahua mixes.

Behaviourally, they are good dogs. But they eat cat shit out of the litter box. And they eat each others' shit in the backyard.

And then they lick my wife and daughter's faces and my wife and daughter kiss them back.

I am thoroughly disgusted by the whole thing but the wife seems to think I am just being intolerant.

So any suggestions?

Is there something wrong with their diet to cause them to be so interested in shit?

How should I deal with the trouble this is causing between my wife and I? The fact that she seems to be so OK with, well, shit really changes how I think and feel about her. I could see this leading to the end of the marriage.

I don't understand her tolerance of this -- it's not like she's German or anything.

Sorry for being kinda heavy.

177 Today's tail-of-five-cats (SWIDT? Never mind.)

Back when we already had 'way too many cats, there was a feral gal who hung around a while, then disappeared for a while, then showed up again, very pregnant. Don't remember what we called her other than Momcat.

She dropped a litter of five, nursed them just barely long enough, and then dropped dead.

The five kittens were two gray brindles and three whites.

The brindles were a hefty-size medium-hair boy, and the runt of the litter, a short-haired girl. Him, we named Sasquatch, a/k/a Bigfoot, because, big foots. Her, we named Zebra, also Spider, among other names. They were both around for a couple of years, then one day they just didn't come home, both on the same day. That still hurts, years and years later. I fantasized they had found some Granny lady neighbor who took them in and fed them well. Yeah. Probably not. Rural life is tough.

The three whites were identical all-white sisters, except, one had a small gray stripe on the left side of her head, another an identical stripe, but on the right side.

One of the gray-striped sisters - Beauty - met a really hard end early-on. Young Daughter was running through the living room and stepped on her. It was instantaneous, at least.

The all-white one also met a tragic end when not much older. The only pet I ever had to scrape off the road. It's a long drive to the gate, and the cats didn't wander that far, so it was curious. Near as I can figure, the phone co. - we found out - sent a truck to our place while we were away. I presume that Snowy got up on the truck unnoticed, and jumped off after the truck exited the gate, and either didn't survive the jump or got hit immediately. Lots of surmising there, but it's the best I could deduce.

The remaining white sister, Grace, lost her gray stripe after that. (No longer needed for us to tell them apart, is my superstition.) She lived for many years, a wonderful kitty - but finally succumbed to a bad tumor near her eye.

Pet ownership - joys and tragedies.

Thanks, Palerider, maybe I'll send it in or post it sometime. They were like pets to us, though we didn't own them. I think I even still remember most of the recipe for baby penguin formula. It's mostly herring fillet and krill blended up in the handy Bass-o-matic.

When we moved, we moved out slowly and left some things temporarily at our old house while it was being fixed up for sale. They were in a crate in the living room with other odds and ends, none of it valuable to others, and I think someone just grabbed the crate one day while the door was unlocked.

181 Lickmuffin. How odd that you are more grossed out than the wife. This moronette does not care to have the dogs licking my face although I don't freak out about it I do discourage it.

You might try putting the litter box behind a baby gate, cat might jump it readily where dogs can't or won't. With teeny dogs you won't have an option of a large mesh the cat could just go through. or just putting a cover on the litter box.

http://pet-supplies.drsfostersmith.com They make a pill or something you can give dogs to make their poo taste bad to them. Never had to deal with that issue, my dogs occasional eat a bit of horse manure but never their own stools so I don't know how well it works.

When we adopted Maire (or rather, she adopted us - lurking on the balcony, pretending to like me so she could gain access to my husband) it was January 27th. We thought we'd give her shelter but allow her to be the obviously wild kitty she was, so we bought the litter, the dry cat food etc. Within a week she was knocked up. So at one point we had 6 cats. The place was crawling with them. At night they used to swarm the rigging (ie every corner of the bed) like so many little pirates. It was unnerving.
