It was another passenger who also spoke Arabic that reported the man to the crew based on his conversation.

A Southwest Airlines passenger who overheard a college student's conversation also spoke Arabic and perceived the comments to be threatening, according to a new Southwest Airlines statement released Monday afternoon.

The new detail sheds light on the removal of 26-year-old Khairuldeen Makhzoomi from an Oakland-bound flight earlier this month. His removal from Flight 4620 gained national attention over the weekend following a story published in The Daily Californian newspaper.

Why Are Our Male Superheroes Getting Physically Bigger?

To be sure, some heroes are portrayed as incredible versions of regular people. Bruce Wayne, Peter Quill, and Tony Stark are like that. But some heroes-like Superman, Thor, and Dr. Manhattan-are of a different kind. These heroes are more than human, and it's precisely the vast difference between them and us that attracts us. We could never be like them, and that's why we like them. In fact, they're really not meant to represent the best versions of us-rather, they seem to represent Higher Powers: limitless beings who can do things we never could. That's why we're not really supposed to be like Superman; instead, Superman is supposed to be like God.

So how do we make sense of the insane popularity these superheroes have received as they've gotten bigger and stronger? Part of it is simply that America loves action movies and special effects. But more than that, these superheroes are popular because American audiences want Higher Powers. That's why even the superheroes who haven't previously been more than exceptional humans (like Batman) are suddenly jacked and vastly powerful. Superheroes are becoming godlike because their audiences want gods. Or, maybe, God.

Study Discovers What Creeps Us Out and Why

The researchers surveyed more than 1,300 people around the world about people and things that creeped them out. Here are some of the results: Clowns, taxidermists, and funeral directors are creepy. So is repeated lip licking, violating personal space, laughing at the wrong times, and steering conversations toward sex. Also creepy: bulging eyes, long fingers, greasy hair, and pale skin. According to Business Insider, 95% of respondents believe creepy people are more likely to be men. And women are more likely to see creepy people as a sexual threat.

Researchers concluded that unpredictability is a big reason why things and people get labeled as creepy. As the study puts it, being creeped out is an evolved response that "enables us to maintain vigilance during times of uncertainty." Researcher Francis McAndrew tells Business Insider their research shows a creepy trait is "anything that would make you unsure of what the person would do next."

The Walking Trees

These are the "walking palm trees" of Ecuador. Each year, they could walk as much as 20 meters. Slower than the Ents from Lord of the Rings but, well, real.

"As the soil erodes, the tree grows new, long roots that find new and more solid ground, sometimes up to 20m," Peter Vrsansky, a palaeobiologist from the Earth Science Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences Bratislava, tells the BBC. "Then, slowly, as the roots settle in the new soil and the tree bends patiently toward the new roots, the old roots slowly lift into the air. The whole process for the tree to relocate to a new place with better sunlight and more solid ground can take a couple of years."

Not a superhero, but the movie version of Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) is a lot smaller than the actual fictional character.

Way back when, Daman Wayans created "HandyMan", a sort of handicapped superhero (funny but certainly not PC these days) on the old "In Living Color" TV show.

qdpsteve, that's a real shame. My dad used to go to Vegas on business occasionally - we're talking more than 40 years ago - and my mom loves to reminisce about the 50 cent shrimp cocktails you could get back then. They didn't gamble but enjoyed the fringe benefits.

Good observation. Actually, a lot of the "science" in Superman's back story is self-contradictory, and laughably bad.


I think I saw an estimate somewhere, that given the apparent abundance of Kryptonite on Earth and elsewhere, the planet Krypton would have had to the size of an entire galaxy before it exploded.

One explanation that was used for a while, created by John Byrne IIRC, was that the FTL wormhole Jor El created to get the infant Superman to Earth in a reasonable time frame (and also how he was able to know so much about Earth despite the distance) also resulted in a good tonnage of Krypton's core following through the portal and eventually getting pulled into the gravity well in chunks large enough to survive the fall through the atmosphere.

Another writer theorized that there then had to be a lot of kryptonite particles just wafting about the Earth's atmosphere and limiting the level of any Kryptonian's power and enough of it might force them to leave entirely or be slowly poisoned.

Originally, his strength was based on his musculature. IIRC, the rationale given by the original creators was that Krypton was a world with gravity heavier than Earth. The current explanation (i.e. energy fields and yellow solar radiation) didn't come about until much later.

I pretty distinctly remember Jor-El putting his infant son into a small rocket, and launching it into space, that illustration courtesy of a '50's-vintage Superman comic book that flashed back to his origins. No FTL wormhole then. And I don't know if Jor-El, back then, knew where, if anyplace, his infant son would land, only that he'd escape the doom of Krypton.

The FTL aspect came about much later when the average third grader was aware that traveling between star systems in a rocket was completely absurd. The John Byrne version would have been in the mid-80s when he was the lead on the reboot. Some elements of that were picked up by later writers but much was tossed out because Byrne really didn't like that by the 80s it seemed like the only Kryptonians who actually died with the planet were Jor El and Lara.

173 The Station casinos are also where working folks from out of town tend to stay. Off the Strip is step 1 to having a chance in hell of getting a room during the week of CES and furthr, a room that won't cost you more than you're being paid to work the show.

Sam's Town is another big one for that purpose. This year we couldn't get room there and end up another mile down Boulder Highway at Arizona Charlie's. The rooms were OK but the restaurant there gave me the worst episode of indigestion I've had in my life to date. There was a brief period when I thought I was in the early stages of a heart attack and should be getting to a hospital. But then I realized that I could breathe and moved without any problem. I was just having a lot of chest pain, like I needed to emit a month's worth of burps.

I love that you can go nearby to beautiful Lake Tahoe and do outdoorsy stuff, hike, boat, et cetera, and then drive back to Reno and have some great gaming fun. That's a two-fer in my book.

Vegas & Reno are both on my bucket list.

(My personal recommendation is Pechanga, it's close to the city of Temecula and not nearly as "in-the-middle-of-nowhere" as Morongo, though Morongo also has a far more killer pool and lazy river if you're bringing kids.)

Coin collector in my youth always wanted to see Carson City. Nothing burger. The drive also passes the Bunny Ranch an Donner Pass. At the south end of the lake is the Kellogg castle on that little island.
Then rounding the bend on the way back is the CalNeva Casino. It was Sinatra's and the one he refurbished for a Kennedy visit. -he didn't show -

my favorite stop was catalina island. i had a beautiful balcony suite and watched the dolphins swimming alongside the ship for most of the trip. i left the sliding glass door open each night and fell asleep to the waves.

Yes, which already produced a very different character in 1960 than that seen throughout the 40s. Once the can of worms was opened on some aspects, it got really overloaded with complications, like the entire rainbow of kryptonite varieties. It got to the point where at least half or more of the stories revolved around some weird detail out of Superman's past than him interacting with other people to deal with a problem. This was one of the big reasons for the reboot. They wanted to strip away the morass of stuff that had built up over the decade and tell some character driven stories rather than this month's bit of unfinished business from Krypton that wasn't blown to bits with the rest of it.

Part of this was changing the nature of Kryptonian society to explain why they were inclined to do nothing when something was plainly terribly wrong with the planet. This version of Krypton stuck for about a decade until the newer writers just couldn't resist falling back on the old tendency to have Kryptonians show up to be a problem.

There's an old story I heard from Papa Basura (grain of salt required) that just after the Cal-Neva was built some guys in suits started poking around with tape measures.

The story goes that they were from Sacramento and had just determined that a small portion of the gambling floor was actually in California.

Apparently it cost more than a few bucks to rip out several rows of slot machines and pay the fines to CA.

Green Valley Ranch in Henderson (about 8 miles from the Strip) is the flagship of the Station casinos. It's top-drawer, and the equivalent of anything on the Strip.

Got another one from the fiancee going to crosspost on the ONT -- the Earl Warren Showgrounds frequently has horse shows in July. They're almost always free, and have the potential to be very fun -- especially the jumping and/or obstacles ("trail riding").



We saw one of the most amazing things ever outside a circus just watching a girls' 12-16 jumping competition. So, here's the setup -- they take the arena and set up a course with, say, 12 "gates". Each gate can be a long jump or a high jump or a double-jump. This kind of event is fun to watch for all ages and genders of riders and shows off the horses to great advantage. The optimal path to take all gates in the correct order is pretty straightforward, so the emphasis is on pacing.



Well, after all contestants had done their first bit, the top contestants were very close, so they needed to do a run-off. Of course, it takes a bunch of time to run 12 gates, so they knocked-down four of them.



Two of the remaining gates were like a "<" -- and we saw several contestants approach from the lower left, jump over the lower gate, then make a circle around to the right to loop around and face the upper gate square-on, then jump it.



And we're watching contestant after contestant do this, until one young lady -- about 14, slight of build, and riding a massive stallion....approached from the lower left, jumped the lower gate, reared the horse up on it's hind legs, and jumped the upper gate sideways like a kangaroo. Everyone in the arena just gasped.



Superb command of the animal, incredible understanding of its strengths and limitations, radical out-of-the-box problem-solving, incredibly courageous.....and probably insanely reckless. And, note, by sacrificing forward momentum for the sideways hop, she actually came in second on time. But a-maz-ing.



It's a memory the fiancee and I will carry with us forever.....because we bothered to show up and watch.

Thing to remember about 1960 and adventure fiction is nearly every character was a WWII vet, which only required them to be in their mid-30s while having had the opportunity to gain serious combat experience in a conflict without political ramifications. It wasn't until well into the 70s that Marvel stopped pretending characters like Reed Richards and Ben Grimm were WWII vets. (Nick Fury retained that status because he was the star of WWII series while also being the lead of the contemporary SHIELD series, so they eventually made up a reason for his longevity.)

The first major character with a military combat background post-WWII was The Punisher, who was early on established as having honed his skills in Vietnam. As an anti-hero this was fine but writers faced a problem with creating new characters with such skills who had not acquired them in ways frowned upon by the current generation of readers.

Anyway, the point is, in 1960 you could recall pre-WWII as a young adult without being an old fart. It wasn't that big a gap.

My kid and even Grim say that my generation's worldview and moral expectation set is so different that its like I come from a different planet. I never felt that was so true until now. Now i feel so old and like the world has changed in ways i have a hard time understanding. I talked to my granfathers friend who was in her late nineties, (perhaps near one hundred years old!) and she lamented that she didnt really like our world any more around 2004. I wondered at that. I was watching the clinton impeachment hearings.
I wonder no more. Its like we cant stand moral clarity any more. The thing that struck me about the new star wars was its lack of nobility of Spirit that the first one had. The second thing was the lack of understanding of warrior ethos by the writers. The old comics didnt have that problem.

I don't know of any A/C clutches that are especially small. Those clutches all have to handle several horsepower at similar RPMs, so they tend to be pretty similar.


Seems to me the mower deck clutch on my Dixon ZTR mower is electric, well, I know it is, and it might be a little smaller than an A/C clutch, and fits on a keyed shaft, and is easier to remove/install than an A/C clutch, which typically needs a special puller.


So if you have a mower or power equipment dealer with a scrapyard attached, try there. Another thought: try Princess Auto. They are a chain of Canadian stores similar to Harbor Freight, but they also sell industrial surplus items. And their entire catalog is on line. http://www.princessauto.com/en/

Considering your information, and being an animal lover... I shall revert to my original answer and declare that if I were a tree, I would be an oak.

That's saying something too. My family has had at least three horses over the past 20 or so years. I feed them when they (the family) are out of town.

But except for one glorious ride with a niece and her horse, when I rode a horse that didn't mind me riding her that day. We have a deal, I don't ride them, they don't kill me.

Hey Coothie! I have some insight.
My sister had a horse like that, and competed in that event. He was a massive beast and a complete asshole. Half the time HE chose how he took the jumps. There was no way to stop him. Its possible that like that long passed Dutch Warmblood she had, that horse decided how he was going to take it. There is a pattern that you are given and the contestants walk the course measuring how many paces their horse will have to take, and figuring out where to ask them to take off. (There is some strategy in this.) When there is a radical departure like this, either the horse took control or the rider panicked and forgot the course. (this is from someone whose big move was to forget the course but take her mount on the pre-class walk around in hopes he would remember it.) Its embarrassing when you go off course or do something crazy like that. Unless you win and then youre brilliant.


By the way, I love the Earl Warren Show Grounds, aas one of my favorite places on earth, and I considered the Dome Arena my property. Never had a bad go round in that particular ring. I used to hear from people its sometimes said my old coach's ghost haunts the coach's pit, next to the announcer's stand. Glad you had fun there. Picture me asleep laid out on the dirt under the pepper tree by the warm up arena in front of the Dome. People often found me out there as a teen, dozing between classes.

If it had happened before they knocked gates, I might go along with that....but this was after the course was altered, and she was standing in her stirrups -- I really think she levitated her stallion over the gate sideways through sheer force of 14-year-old will. Just an amazing moment.



And, yes, I hope Stace makes it to the showgrounds. It's especially fun when the farms doll-up the stalls -- it's almost medieval. Many happy memories for us.

Yes he has cats but they are not per se "his." However he has a weirdo dog. And Floyd. Big fat Floyd the lesson horse who he shares a big pen with. Niece Horse's education has not progressed to "this is your husband and this is what we expected you to do with him," yet. I think frankly she is relieved. we have new neighbors who are being noisy and making it hard to breed mares with any hope of getting them to settle. IN fact... tomorrow i may have to go to city hall about it...

at that age and chasing points, and funded the way i guess she is by the horse you describe... she likely practices on him five days a week for at least an hour a day and rides other horses, an hour at a time, too. Kids like that are used as unpaid employees by trainers to work the less interested clients' mounts. Shes likely being raised more by the trainers than her parents and the horses are the parents way of saying "sorry."

...Not that i would know anything about THAT. My show horses were always mares.

267 My mother is extremely slowly but surely going through the stuff in her storage locker. With any luck she'll be in a smaller less costly unit or none at all by the end of the year.

She has been going through a box of paperwork that at first appeared to be her old tax returns and insurance forms from at least fifteen years ago but as she'd got to the middle it turned out to be stuff from dead relatives. One envelope has a bunch of old US currency in it. 1905 10 dollar bill with McKinley on it. 1914 20 dollar bill with Cleveland. A ten spot from 1934.

So I guess I have to go look up what they go for to collectors these days. Probably not a lot over face value but it beats finding more 90's insurance forms.

at that age and chasing points, and funded the way i guess she is by the horse you describe... she likely practices on him five days a week for at least an hour a day and rides other horses, an hour at a time, too. Kids like that are used as unpaid employees by trainers to work the less interested clients' mounts. Shes likely being raised more by the trainers than her parents and the horses are the parents way of saying "sorry."

...Not that i would know anything about THAT. My show horses were always mares.

UGH! I had a friend in Texas who changed everything about his life and shook it successfully. His wife eats separate meals. he actually looks like a completely different person, now, but he wanted to live without insulin, and be healthy again. Get mom to a nutritionist. Maybe they can explain it to her.
Carbs are now poison to dad. Thats how my friend saw it and hes so much better now.its crazy how he changed his life, but he ate salad and skinned chicken breasts till he thought the would go crazy. Now he can he what he wants pretty much and is careful and takes a minimum dose of Metaformin just to be sure. His Dr keeps saying he can try stopping if he wants, but he wants the security of knowing somethings helping him process those sugars.

i think most damaging was when the Heart association and the drs started pushing low fat. Its way worse for you than having bread and grain products with every meal, better to have protein and veggies.

Also, since she was a home ec professor, she taught nutrition to nurses (she was head of her university's department.) Once you learn the rules it makes sense. Incidentally, the fiancee went on a medically-supervised intensive diet plan some years back and lost a bunch of weight. She then went into the "transitioning to the new normal" part of the plan.....which allows unlimited "natural" foods.



So, her current deal is -- eat a Plan carb-fest (oatmeal) for breakfast; eat fruit snacks at midmorning; eat a Plan pseudo-meal (like a shelf-stable TV dinner) for lunch, with fruit for dessert; eat fruit for midafternoon snack; eat another Plan pseudo-meal for dinner, supplementing it with a baked potato, corn-on-the-cob, or baked sweet potato -- and having a plateful of berries with whipped cream and cocoa powder for dessert. When I point-out that lorikeets consume a greater portion of proteins and fats than she does, she brushes my concerns aside by pointing out that her diet is "medically supervised".



It's killing her, but I'd rather enjoy her presence than get in a fight over her delusions and drive her away -- after which, she'd die lonely.

ugh i am so sorry. well, older nurses know how to advise a diabetic patient to eat. I have this weird thing where a lot of my friends are considerably older than i am. One of those close friends is a nurse nutritionist. she lives in Kansas. Shes also a gourmet cook for fun, and super sweet. I wish i could hook her up with your mom and just her friendship would help. shes wise enough to help with all this kind of thing without making a person feel preached at.
Re: medically supervised diets: i was looking at doing a nutrisystem thing to lose weight to get my BP down and yeah i was stunned at how the package was so carb heavy. Im actually doing my own thing, but more veg, and protein minus the weird carb side dishes. I dont need the rice. I do eat a cracker, beans, or something. Carrots are also full of what diets like to call smart carbs

I was born in '62 and had the "food pyramid" drilled into me in public schools for years (although https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_pyramid_%28nutrition%29 says it was first adopted in Sweden in 1974).



The fact that it is nutritional POISON strongly argues against any politicized Federal role in nutrition -- or agriculture. That neither nutrition nor agriculture are found in Article I, section 8 of the Constitution is further evidence.

He retroactively helped Stark reach a US base after he'd escaped from Wong-Chu, then took up Stark's offer of a job several years later. One of the few mainstream characters t serve in Vietnam and actually returned home a better person was Eugene 'Flash' Thompson, Peter Parker's high school nemesis. More recently Flash was retconned to be an Iraq vet who lost both legs at the knees and Sha Shan was simply wiped from existence. OTOH, he got the Venom symbiote and gets to be a superhero himself nowadays.

348 The New York Times Co. is preparing to lay off a few hundred staffers in the second half of the year, The Post has learned.

Chairman and Publisher Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger Jr.'s management team has been talking with some of the Times' unions to come to a deal to provide reduced severance to those affected, sources told The Post.

"There's a goal of a couple of hundred people," said a source familiar with talks. "They don't want to pay out big packages, and they're having negotiations with the unions."

The layoffs would likely occur between the Aug. 21 end of the summer Olympics in Brazil and Election Day on Nov. 8, sources said.

A union source confirmed there are ongoing talks about reducing severance pay, but wasn't aware of lay-off plans at this time.

375 Good morning, everyone! Mr. Bluebell and I finally installed our new garbage disposal yesterday! We even did the hard wiring! And we are still alive! And still married!

We almost lost confidence at the electrical part because we had to take out the perfectly lovely plug that came already installed, but we did it. Of course, we both have hair like Einstein now, and the lights in the room turn on by themselves whenever we walk in, but hey.

Thanks to all the morons who gave me advice a few weeks ago, which I collected into a "Moron Tips and Tricks" (TM) document. Specifically, I have billygoat, Stringer Davis, Vic, and Hrothgar on the list, and there were probably more.
