So armed men prevented the possibility of a much worse outcome.

There are a few rare birds who never believed in said 'principled' opposition, and who have also never believed that Trump is himself anything other than an unprincipled opportunist.

(Note the comments from his new chief strategist Manafort last week about how all of Trump's campaign statements and positioning up till now have been "an act", to be modified or jettisoned at need.)

Good morning, everyone! Mr. Bluebell and I finally installed our new garbage disposal yesterday! We even did the hard wiring! And we are still alive! And still married!

We almost lost confidence at the electrical part because we had to take out the perfectly lovely plug that came already installed, but we did it. Of course, we both have hair like Einstein now, and the lights in the room turn on by themselves whenever we walk in, but hey.

Thanks to all the morons who gave me advice a few weeks ago, which I collected into a "Moron Tips and Tricks" (TM) document. Specifically, I have billygoat, Stringer Davis, Vic, and Hrothgar on the list, and there were probably more.

One of the original UN founders of the AGW scam posted an essay saying it was a scam to transfer wealth from the rich West to poor countries. I posted a link to that months ago. Also I posted a link last week to an article that the originator of the Weather Channel wrote saying that the whole thing was a scam. TWC since being bought out by comcast is all into the AGW scam.

36 "Rising sea levels are also a scam."

Well, they *are* rising.

At an average rate of something like 3.2 plus or minus 0.4 millimeters/year.

On a century-long time frame, this implies a total inundation of ankles. Oh noes!

As for the idea that Faceplantbook might have its headquarters inundated by the encroaching waters, their HQ is in the old Sun Microsystems buildings known back in the day as "Sun Quentin", by analogy to the grim old state prison, San Quentin, on the northern reaches of SF Bay.

The residential neighborhoods adjacent to Sun Quentin have been there for ages. Long preceding Facefuckbook, long preceding Sun. They're classic post-WWII suburban sprawl (the stuff we're supposed to hate). They're not at any appreciably higher elevation than the Farcebook complex itself. Why haven't they been long since drowned and driven out? Could it be that this entire proposition is complete bullshit?

Fundamentally flawed societies do not produce moral, competent leaders. And with its descent into secular progressivism and temporal decadence America has become a profoundly dysfunctional society. "Embrace the suck". "Enjoy the decline". Whatever you want to call it. I reached that conclusion years ago and try to unplug from all this as much as possible lest I be swept away along with it. Look after those closest to you whom you trust and those who share your values. Keep connected with others of like mind far and wide. That's the best we can do at the moment in my opinion.

45 Good morning everyone.

The move to the new house is now mostly complete! There's only a bit of stuff remaining at the old place, and some cleaning to finish up, and we're done. Internet is on...and it sucks. The price one pays for moving to a more rural area, I guess. It's DSL, limited to 7.5 Mbps, with a ridiculously low monthly data allowance, (something like ten GB...so yeah, I could install one game from Steam, and easily go over my allotment of ones and zeros). Needless to say, I'm looking for decent alternatives to Verizon....which means almost any alternative.

Human society has always tipped rocked back and forth between extremes of decadence and virtue, much like the rocking of an old sailing ship at sea. The analogy holds, because these things can become too top-heavy and tip over, and the only question left is whether we're going over, or we're going to start swinging back the other way even more forcefully.

Unfortunately, we're top heavy to an extent that, to complete the ship analogy, resembles the Vasa. Too many chiefs.

And maybe so: if the state cartel of producers proposed by Guess-Who's administration had passed, they'd have all been under arrest (yeah right) for unlicensed untaxed production. That is if Ohio's state police weren't all busy protecting Guess-Who out on his carefully-chosen campaign trail. I'm surprised there were enough state police left to begin an investigation.

57 The Reuters article on the Koch brothers omits a key quantitative assertion by Charles Koch that appeared in the original interview, to wit, that discretionary domestic spending under George W. Bush went up 2.5 times faster than its rate of increase under Bill Clinton.

It really says a lot about the post-Reagan era that the exemplar of restraint in federal government spending during that era was... a Democrat.

But, but, but, splutter the GOP establishment shills, Clinton had to work with a Republican congress! So they forced restraint upon him despite his unwillingness!

Sure thing. Last I looked, Dubya only had to deal with a Democratic congress for the last two of his eight years in office. What's the excuse there?

59 52 My stopwatch is ticking; it won't be the end of the day before some NORML types run up the notion that if marijuana were only legal in Ohio, these deaths would not have happened.
--

Undoubtedly.

Look, greed is greed. Legalizing marijuana is not going to change the fact that some people can't be bothered to work w/in the system... not when there's a profit to be made. They always think the laws apply to others.

It infuriates me that adults would put their kids at risk this way, but that appears to be the case with this family. There's NO FARKIN' EXCUSE.

Frankly, I have more sympathy for someone who sticks up a liquor store to get money to support their family than I do for people who engage in this sort of organized crime.

It appears this Piketon family was no worse than the thugs in the inner cities... except in a way they WERE worse b/c they weren't surrounded by gang-bangers and they had a support system in the form of a local church that they stopped attending.

Something about this story just enrages me.

Posted by: Case, Mors Semper Tyrannis at April 25, 2016 08:42 AM (CzhL0)

61 Good morning Horde!

No new polls have been released, though PPP is due to release something soon. Their poll in the RCP average is over a month old now.

No changes, GOP nominee in waiting continues to lose to future President Hillary Clinton by a 9.3% average. The Dems are likely to take control of the Senate picking up at least 3 seats. Paul Ryan will remain the only GOP leader in Washington, as the Dems take between 12 and 22 seats in the House, but not enough to take control.

A few random thoughts from the last few days.

1) We talk a lot about Trump being made of Teflon, but he is nothing compared to Hillary Clinton. Unlike Trump's hypothetical "kill someone on 5th avenue", she actually did cause the death of 4 Americans without any consequence or drop in support from her core supporters. The same can be said for her blatant commission of felonies. The voters don't care.

2) Conservatism is now a marginalized philosophy, much like libertarianism. Rush has said for years "Conservatism wins every time it is tried". Well that turns out to be bullshit. The GOP has said for several election cycles "If we could just run a conservative!" Well here we are with an actual conservative in a position to win the nomination, and the GOP looks at the situation and says "Naw, Bro, let's pick the bullshitter instead."

3) Preliminary polls out of the remaining states show that as we hit the end of the cycle, enough people are going to vote for Trump to get him the nomination. It looks like he will win enough in PA, Indiana, and CA to get a first ballot win.

4) The quest to "break the establishment" has failed. Breaking them requires picking a nominee who will have the ability to win and put people into the positions to change the culture. This is why we are still dealing with Bush people a decade or two later. Trump will get lip service during the election and the GOP establishment will just retreat and wait for the next election cycle under Hillary. The messages that Trump has been running on are now off the table, because nothing kills an election message faster than a landslide defeat. For historical precedent look what happened to tax increases as a Dem policy position after Mondale's defeat. Border control is going to be a dead issue for a generation. The messenger matters.

5) Rush and Hannity have lost a lot of credibility this cycle. They have spent years pumping up their brand as "Mr. Conservative", but in the end they didn't do enough to stand up for conservatism as a set of guiding principles. For whatever reason, they let Trump slide without challenging him. They will own this disaster as will quite a few others who have spent a lot of time claiming to be conservatives. But it probably doesn't matter. See point 1, "conservative" is just a word without meaning to many any more.

6) If you are a Trump supporter, you are going to be very frustrated during the next 6 months. The rest of the country has determined Trump=Bigot. After you lift your head from rooting for him to finally squash that gnat, Cruz, you are going to find that the rest of the country has already made up their mind regarding Trump and his supporters. If you dare to put a Trump sticker on your car, or a Trump sign in front of your house, you WILL be called a racist.

7) By the same token that conservatism is dead, so is libertarianism. Many (most) of the young Ron Paul libertarians are supporting Bernie. This means they never understood libertarianism to begin with, and sure as hell don't know what socialism is.

It seems a number of these young fools think socialism means making those evil 1%'s pay their fair share. Which means they pay for stuff that "I" (young fools) want. Which means, sugar daddy. These dumbasses don't comprehend that the socialism in a family doesn't extend to the rest of the world-no one else truly cares nor do they have the responsibility to give you stuff for nothing. And after a certain point, neither does your family. but schools have been pounding this idea that someone else "owes" you something into these kids heads, and they have latched onto it.

This is absolutely accurate, if...

Democrat enthusiasm increases tremendously to the 2012 levels.

Blacks embrace Hillary in exactly the same proportions as they did Obama.

Everybody who was excited about Bernie suddenly switches 180 degrees and gets excited about Hillary.

The country discovers that they actually like Hillary instead of what every poll says.

Yes, Hillary is going to win in a landslide if everything happens exactly how it did in 2012. These pollsters are geniuses.

75 It's DSL, limited to 7.5 Mbps, with a ridiculously
low monthly data allowance, (something like ten GB...so yeah, I could
install one game from Steam, and easily go over my allotment of ones and
zeros). Needless to say, I'm looking for decent alternatives to
Verizon....which means almost any alternative.

Posted by: Sticky Wicket at April 25, 2016 08:31 AM (tborC)

Actually 7.5 Mbps is okay unless you have lots of recievers on at once. I have not problem with Netflex and Amazon.... BUT...I have unlimited monthly data. I didn't realize anyone had a limited allotment anymore.

78 @57

I often post this fact nugget but it bears repeating as often as possible.

At the end of this congress the GOP will have controlled the house for 18 of 22 years, the senate for 12 of 22 years and the presidency of 8 of 22 years.

In that time the debt has risen from just under 5 to just under 20 trillion. The goveremt has expanded, freedoms have eroded and the country has been fundamentally changed.

The vast majority of the problem has been the GOP banding together with the Donks to form a uniparty.

The GOP is a fraudulent party it needs to die and be replaced.

I am in full agreement, and have advocated the establishment of a new party since the tail end of the Bush administration. It didn't turn out to be bullshit, it was always bullshit. If you run as a Ted Cruz conservative in NY or MA or any of a number liberal dominated states you will lose. Period.

That doesn't mean there aren't conservatives in those areas, it means they have to temper their message if they hope to have any chance of winning.

It's hard to imagine how anyone can get this so wrong...

As far as the left and media are concerned, there was always a question whether Trump was a bigot. There was never any question about Cruz.

In their eyes, Cruz is the UberConservative, which equals a card-carrying KKK, cross burning, snake handling, leave-nooses-on-the-doorknob crazy.

Trump is from Manhattan, so there was always a geographical exemption from racism for him. Only when he grew in the polls was there any attempt to southernize him.

You should know this. On the racist scale, Trump is at or below Kasich. Cruz is at eleventy.

Posted by: jwest at April 25, 2016 08:59 AM (Zs4uk)

94 Call it lifestyle appropriation? Over the centuries, well couple of them anyway, the idea of "internal improvements" led the nation to extend roads, then paved roads, postal service, electricity, and telephone lines to rural areas, under notions of general improvements in commerce, the need to unite the nation, or alleviation of poverty. Now it's internet, and, high-speed internet.

At each juncture, with each new technology, many have said that rural life is something different, there is nothing about the choice of rural living that entitles a person to being provided with all the conveniences. AFAIK, not one "improvement" has actually been left for the market to serve. In every case, at one or another point government, and other peoples' tax money, has shown up.

Water is the big one, and largely ignored. When an ambitious county or city official wants very badly to bring rural freeholders under his control and taxation, he will attack their groundwater quality with all the science the state can provide, and sooner or later they get convinced that it will be cheaper for them to come into incorporation and get "city water" rather than bring their springs and wells into compliance. It was a good argument when cholera was rife. Now they're as likely to be poisoned by their water plant and piping. Civilization's discontents.

146 Joncelli - 2/3 of PA delegates are unbound. The PA winner only gets 17 delegates. 50 some are unbound.

The trick is figuring out who those 50 will vote for on the first ballot. Many of the ones likely to win tomorrow are saying "for the state winner" or "for the district winner". There is a good chance that Trump will get most PA votes, even if most are unbound.

149 137 Joncelli, only 17 delegates in PA are bound. 54, the ones the voters elect, are unbound.
There are at least 2 districts where Trump has no delegates who have promised to support him no matter what.
I don't know what the Cruz situation is, but I have heard he may have less.
Don't know what Kasich has - officially none, but geographically he may have ties.

There are a few different OTC allergy medications. If Zyrtec isn't working, try another one.

But I think you have to use them for at least a few days before they begin to work, so be patient.

Fexofenadine

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at April 25, 2016 09:36 AM (Zu3d9)

I don't know... You could as the one (yes there was only one guy) guy who went to jail for RBMS crap that nearly destroyed the world economy. He went to jail for doing something that was common place among the big banks. They got away with stealing and destroying trillions in wealth. They used other people's investment money to buy their way out of any accountability. I know that the government created the environment where this shit could happen and that the banks just took advantage of it. But this is a gigantic exclamation point on the cooperation between certain businesses and government in scratching each others' backs at the expense of "hard working American" (and all of the other condescending platitudes that politicians use to refer to us peasants).

This is my thesis: I don't know what he is. I know he's not GOPe and I know he's not a socialist. That appears to be the best we can do. I'll take it.

EITHER he can't beat the democrats OR he'll be a disaster in office. Anti-Trumpers need to pick one argument or the other.
EITHER he's a reckless air-headed billionaire who's gonna try to build a wall and will fumble all over the place on foreign policy OR he's a lying democrat who will be equivalent to an Obama/Hillary presidency.

You don't get to just spray indignation everywhere and act like you're making a good point. You don't like Trump, and you'll say anything to prove it. I'll take Trump, and I try to be honest about it.

I'm a little surprised though, I thought Kasich was playing to be Trump's VP pick. This move will likely not help that. Might be that he got the word that Trump isn't going to pick him.

Republican Results All Counties (Active Enrolled Republicans: 2,554,996)

Trump 528,792

Democratic Results All Counties (Active Enrolled Democrats: 5,268,431)

Clinton 1,057,347

Hillary lapped Trump in primary votes cast.

I think skepticism of primary results translating to general election victories is warranted. Maybe a million Democrats will cross over on election day, but that's just speculation.

Some will hasten America's demise, and contribute to the downfall of Western Civilization at a faster rate. Others might go the little Dutch boy route and slow down the speed of the tsunami to only 300 miles per hour instead of 500 mph. Either way, we are losing what we once had and once cherished. Because not enough people love and cherish it anymore. In fact, they would prefer that we die. Some have made that their aim in life. How do you get freedom back when totalitarianism is the predominant philosophy of the day. People are standing in line to destroy Western Civilization. You see anyone running for office who can turn that around? I do not.

Trump can BOTH be likely to lose AND promise to be a disaster should he get into office. These are in no way mutually exclusive.
He can also be BOTH a disastrously inept political actor AND a liberal by instincts. Trump has no real core principles beyond Trump. This makes him inordinately vulnerable to flattery, particularly from people he thinks are "strong." He also has absolutely no intellectual curiosity, no desire to learn. Minus external factors, such as the need to con a GOP electorate, he will retreat to the easiest intellectual position (since he has absolutely no interest in defending any particular principles), the position that, as a New Yorker, has been "common sense" his whole life, the position most likely to win him praise from the media.

You don't try to be particularly honest in your debating. You use your passive-aggressive "aesthetics" argument to denigrate and ignore opposing viewpoints while seeming to maintain a moral high ground. It's a well-conceived insult.

This works in Kasich's favor as a VP pick or, better as a "compromise (GOPe) Prez candidate" should Trump fall short.

Kasich can say hey, look my numbers are rising and I've won more states now. I'm on a roll and will bring in the most voters.

While he can point at Cruz and say, "See his numbers are falling or have flattened out. Cruz is getting all the votes he's going to get in the general election."

Cruz is still going to rely on his organization to get the nom (or VP slot) in a Brokered Convention.

Cruz/Kasich makes a lot of sense from the GOPe perspective-

they give the conservatives Cruz and get Kasich on the back end to undo all the good work Cruz does.

They'd like Kasich/Cruz or Kasich/Mario even more because they get all they want from amnesty to "Improving" Obamacare to green energy graftorama.

298 Had a semi-serious talk with Mrs M last night about what country we should move to. Of course, there isn't one.

Thinking the Cruz/Kasich team up could be GOP engineered effort. I recall that something similar happened with Reagan being "strongly encouraged" to pick GHW Bush as his running mate in '80. I don't like it but there really aren't any good, pure choices at this point. Manafort telling the GOPe that Trump has been putting on an act for the rubes doesn't exactly inspire confidence either.

302 Dave in Fla, check >111 which is what I was referencing. Yes JackStraw is talking about the electorate's impression of the candidates. Trump's "vulgarianism" is a problem because it presumably turns off voters who perceive it as bigotry. This criticism when leveled by the right thus leads to the same place as the actual race card attack by the left. I won't say the a-e-s-t-h-e-t-i-c word, but, that's what "bigot" means in our day and age. You play into the power of the leftist "raaacist" play when you just toss those accusations out and give them weight. It's disingenuous.

Is he going to turn off voters that way, as I've been repeatedly told? Or will he lead a leftist resurgence when that off the record NYT interview is revealed and the left rallies to his liberal democrat cause?

There are a billion things to criticize Trump for. These smug accusations of liberalism, after he's stirred up the base with red meat for 8 months, are ludicrous.

Trump is a media personality who caters to the media. He will pick a VP that will make a splash, get him coverage. this means he will either pick

a) a Democrat moderate like Webb
b) a media personality with some political experience - think Scarborough (joke answer: Jerry Springer)

------------

I don't really understand this statement. VPs are not the sure route to the Presidency that we think they are. I think even less so in this day and age - for many reasons.

If Kasich as VP is a necessity to get Cruz at the top of the ticket, that would be fine with me. And if Kasich is able to deliver OH - that would be great.

I can't worry myself of some future in 8 years where Kasich may become President.

The GOP, if it were smart, and its not, that's how we got here, should start coalescing around Trump now. He is going to win. Keeping the fight going until July is a bad idea. The thought is that the fight can be taken to July and THEN a new face will be introduced? Someone who has yet to raise money? Or it will be Cruz? Or Kasich?

You argue like a Clinton.

So you deny that outside the 30% of the electorate that we live in that Trump has not been (erroneously) labeled as being a bigot because of his anti-immigration proposals? Maybe I don't post enough that people notice, but I agree with Trump on immigration. But I also see enough of that 70% to know how he has been branded. Whether or not it is fair is not the point. Romney didn't deserve the 47% or "binders full of women" labels either. But they were political reality. Outside the GOP circles, Trump=Bigot. That is political reality. I'm not saying it is true that he is, or that his supporters are bigots. If that were true, then I would be a bigot too for wanting strong borders.

It is the game the left and media play, and they are very good at it. They have succeeded quite well this time.

He talked about attacks similar to the one at the Wisconsin school, mentioning the 'death clock' which starts ticking at the first shot/first 911 call. The 911 call goes like this- 'Somebody with a gun is killing people here and we need you police with guns to stop that somebody.' Meanwhile, the body count increases until said somebody with a gun is stopped by police with a gun. Or,,,if an armed citizen is nearby, they can stop that somebody with a gun. Thereby stopping the the 'death clock'. And the body count.

342 "You don't try to be particularly honest in your debating. "

Posted by: person at April 25, 2016 10:12 AM (mFkVC)

I think you might want to review your own positions before saying others are not honest in their debate.

That aside, you simply don't understand the reason for Trump.

Trump is someone who measures success in terms of what gets accomplished, not in how many political points are scored.

There are problems in this country that need solutions and action, not hashtags and meaningless committees. We've tried democrat and republican administrations who follow traditional political methods for decades and the problems still persist.

So of us have come to the realization that the status quo can't continue. To this end, we believe Trump will initiate change.

Why Trump? Because he is ego-driven.

The desperate need to be seen as the most competent, most able deal maker and project manager will drive him, day and night, to cut through the bureaucracy and special interests to actually accomplish something.

Problems that long ago were co-opted by a social spending industry to deal with the symptoms will have a chance of being solved. Programs that have been perpetuated to facilitate party loyalties can be eliminated. The very basis of the federal employment system that prevents any expectation of performance can be changed.

Only Trump brings the hope of common sense to the government. Cruz, Kasich, Hillary and the rest all need to perpetuate the current system to survive.

That's why we're with Trump.
