10 That's according to a new study published Tuesday in the journal Obesity. A team led by Duke University scientist Asheley Skinner studied data from the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and found that the percentage of overweight and obese children between 2 and 19 years old has increased across the board since 1999.

According to the new study, in 1999-2000 (NHANES' surveys are conducted in 2-year cycles), 27.5 percent of all youth between 2 and 19 years old were considered overweight. That increased to 31.8 percent in the 2011-2012 study and 33.2 percent in the 2013-2014 cohort.

Go to any Walmart or mall and sit for a few minutes, watching the population walk by. Our country is by and large(no pun intended) , fat.

I happened to watch the program "MY 600 Lb Life) last night. Subject has lost 350 plus pounds, including 35 lbs of skin that was removed in this episode. He still has 200 lbs to go, he started the documentary two years ago at 729 lbs. He could actually waddle on his feet at that weight, using a cane.

I see more really fat people in grocery stores than Wal*Marts. Actually see a lot of really beautiful people in the local one.

59 Anatomy lessons were a social event in the 17th century, taking place in lecture rooms that were actual theatres, with students, colleagues and the general public being permitted to attend on payment of an entrance fee. The spectators are appropriately dressed for this social occasion. It is thought that the uppermost (not holding the paper) and farthest left figures were added to the picture later.

Then my supervisor has a death in the family. He takes funeral leave Fri-Sat, and I have to work! Boom goes my weekend!

I used to enjoy working for a newspaper. No more.

I pray every night that somebody in this city will have need of an experienced copy editor. So far, nothing. Not moving because wife's job pays big bucks, and I refuse to uproot the kids.

Had to unload on somebody.

113 There is a reason why the GOPe in Congress do not like Ted Cruz - he is relentless. This is one of the reasons why his supporters (and much of the base before they became Trump fans) liked him so much. He fought. He made efforts that were probably futile, but at least he tried. He didn't give up and just say well we have no chance. And this bothered the McCains and Boehners of the world.

One of the things about Democrats that our side either hates or admires is they are relentless. They do not give up. Did it bother them that the country gave clear indications that the country did not want Obamacare foisted upon it, with even one of the most liberal states weighing in against it. Did it bother them that they had to sacrifice 40 Congressmen. No, all that mattered was achieving the goal. They fought until the end.

Now, we have a bunch of people who are asking Cruz to simply give up - accept reality. The exact sort of thing we are tired of hearing from the GOPe.

I hope Cruz fights this all the way. If he loses, he at least went down swinging. His hail mary play may not work, but at least he made a play to win.

I don't care about his speaking style, his voice, his nose, his unlikability - all I care about is someone advocating constitutional conservatism and giving it fair hearing. If that loses to whatever brand of conservatism that people think Trump brings - so be it.

But give up - heck no. I'd think less of Cruz if he did. I hope he fights this to the bitter end - even if it means doing everything in his power to deny Trump the nomination.

Because Hillary is not my enemy. Progressive government is.

Prince was reportedly a generous, anonymous donor. His manager, etc. said that there are people in hospitals in California whose treatment outside of insurance is being completely covered anonymously. That anonymous is Prince.

It's sad that instead of his fortune being able to continue to be used in this manner, half of it is going to go to the government to waste.

160 In an op-ed in National Review Online, Nina Shea of the conservative Hudson Institute's Center for Religious Freedom questioned the State Department's motives for denying Sister Diana a visa. According to Shea, the consular officials denied the application because Sister Diana was an internally displaced person (IDP), and therefore could try seeking asylum in the US.

"Sister Diana had multiple documents vouching for her and the temporary nature of her visit," wrote Shea, from a letter to her prioress attesting "that the nun has been gainfully employed since last February with the Babel College of Philosophy and Theology in Erbil." There are also letters from her sponsors, the Institute for Global Engagement and former Congressman Frank Wolf's (R-Va.) 21st Century Wilberforce Initiative.

"For good measure, she also had a letter of endorsement for her visit from Representative Anna Eshoo" (D-Calif.), who co-chairs the congressional Caucus on Religious Minorities in the Middle East, Shea added.

Yet the consular officials "either thought that they were all in on a scheme by the nun or that Sister Diana was plotting to deceive her well-placed friends and supporters, as well as the US government," Shea wrote.

My sis is usually confrontational, but she decided to just not respond, not even acknowledge that it is any of their business.

If you spend the time to construct a proper will, your lawyers will ask you want you want done with your money and assets when you die and would have begun to construct foundations, trusts, etc. that would have sheltered some of the money. You can direct where you want your money to go, he could have left sums now in trust, or after death that would have gone directly to charities of his choice, and been sheltered from being simply taken by the government.
His estate is estimated somewhere around $300M (I don't know if that includes his unpublished music, etc.) If the state and feds are going to claim half of it, it will likely force the sale of property, including Paisley Park in order to cover the taxes. A detailed will and estate planning could have designated a different disposition of those assets according to his wishes, possibly avoiding much of the tax bill.

This is what lawyers/accountants who specialize in estate planning do.

My last roomie when I lived in the barracks was always coming up overweight according to the Army's weight charts, and the alternate BMI measurements they were using back in 1990-91. Caused him all kinds of bureaucratic problems.

He was also a 6'4", ripped, 11C monster who could run like a marathoner and was nationally ranked in the Hammer Throw. The Army plucked him out of the unit to go off and train for the Olympic Team, although he barely missed the cut.

196 I have a sinking suspicion that the $15 minimum wage will be widely adopted and that it will become a ceiling rather than a floor for most jobs.

The problem with state-level minimum wage increases, especially big jumps like that one, is that they are too fast. The minimum wage will, eventually (barring some ghastly collapse of civiliation) become $15 an hour as inflation and market forces cause it to happen. They just want to rush things along, which damages everything in the process by artificially inflating wages.

240 BMI was designed to apply to populations, not individuals. You are better off just looking at yourself in a mirror and admitting to what you see.

BMI is popular because it is easy to calculate, and it seems 'scientific' - there are two measurements and actual MATH is involved.

It is much harder to calculate actual body fat, which would be more informative of anything worth knowing.

279 "I'm sure Rush has played golf with some of those people too. Perhaps even on a regular basis. Doesn't mean they're friends or share each other's views."

Media people live on ratings. Its that simple.

Imagine you sell furniture for a living, and you get some god-awful pink sofas in. You personally hate the color, but people keep asking about it.

You will sell those pink sofas.

My morning talk show sure gave Trump a lot of airtime and Cruz and anyone else basically zero. My daughter only heard Rubio's voice when he made fun of Trump.

(This is an example, not saying Rubio was great.)

But I really don't think the guys on the radio actually want Trump. They obviously did a little split where one guy was more pro-Trump and the other less so, but still friendly enough.

Why did they do that? Money.

They don't like pink sofas, but customers keep asking.

Posted by: ThunderB at April 28, 2016 11:17 AM (zOTsN)

Yep

Every five to ten years, the Surgeon's Guild would commission a portrait by a leading portraitist of the period; Rembrandt was commissioned for this task when he was 26 years old, and newly arrived in Amsterdam. It was his first major commission in Amsterdam. Each of the men included in the portrait would have paid a certain amount of money to be included in the work, and the more central figures (in this case, Dr. Tulp) probably paid more, even twice as much.

Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at April 28, 2016 11:15 AM (mvenn)

Honest answer: It relates to nearly everything else we know about the poor, and the left's approach to combating social ills. We have created a nation of dependents. Too many of these people rely on someone other than themselves, often the government, to supply them with basic needs.

So what gets tossed at the poor are often nutritionally horrible foods, with all the fat and sugar and partially hydrogenated petroleum jelly grease extract, that obesity and hunger DO go hand in hand.

What has been shown time and again is that nearly EVERY incident of famine in this world is caused by political circumstances, and not economic/climate problems. Controlling the flow of food is even more basic than controlling everything else the left does in this country, so the nazis who want to manage what YOUR children eat?

Yep, that's our left. That's the Democrat Party. And this is the result.

They have EBT cards - they select the food they want.
Michelle Obama and others whine about good foods not being available to them, that it's more convenient and cheaper to get fast food than fresh fruits and vegetables. This is true. It's also true that they prefer not to take the time, the planning to shop for ingredients and then prepare the meal at home. Probably why they are also poor - they cannot or will not plan, take the easiest option, etc.

One anecdote of this: Had a friend who was a kindergarten teacher in a poor neighborhood (her choice because she thought she could best help them). School provided *free breakfast* before class. Parents couldn't be bothered to get them there early for the *free breakfast*. In fact, typically half the kids were in PJs. She would save food for them so that they wouldn't be hungry in class...until it finally dawned on her that it's not her job to assist them in getting *free breakfast* for their kids. If there's no effort involved, there's also no value. Whose fault is it when those kids were hungry in class? Whose fault is it if they are taken to McD's after school to pig out on fries?

I agree on one level.

On another, he's trying to win during an outsider year, Trump has advantages coming in, the leadership has fucked this up several different ways, and threw support to everybody BUT him, and some are still running their mouths against him.

He has to stay visible and viable, and this is one way of doing it. Trump has high negatives, particularly with women. Cruz just allied with a smart, self-made woman.

Additionally, I have friends that are 180* from me politically. I don't vote or conduct my life according to their political leanings, or actions. Why should Trump be any different.

It doesn't take special mental powers to see she's got health issues, its just a question of how bad and what they are. 375 They have EBT cards - they select the food they want.
Michelle
Obama and others whine about good foods not being available to them,
that it's more convenient and cheaper to get fast food than fresh fruits
and vegetables. This is true. It's also true that they prefer not to
take the time, the planning to shop for ingredients and then prepare the
meal at home. Probably why they are also poor - they cannot or will not
plan, take the easiest option, etc.

One anecdote of this:
Had a friend who was a kindergarten teacher in a poor neighborhood (her
choice because she thought she could best help them). School provided
*free breakfast* before class. Parents couldn't be bothered to get them
there early for the *free breakfast*. In fact, typically half the kids
were in PJs. She would save food for them so that they wouldn't be
hungry in class...until it finally dawned on her that it's not her job
to assist them in getting *free breakfast* for their kids. If there's no
effort involved, there's also no value. Whose fault is it when those
kids were hungry in class? Whose fault is it if they are taken to McD's
after school to pig out on fries?

Posted by: Lizzy at April 28, 2016 11:35 AM (NOIQH)

Exactly. This is a deeply rooted (no pun intended) cultural problem: people who can't be bothered to take care of their own basic needs, like feeding themselves and their children properly.

It really is a shame there are no fresh produce sites in many inner cities anymore, but one of the reasons there aren't is because it's not economically feasible to maintain a business in many of these communities, let alone safe to operate a business.

Rush had a woman call yesterday, begging him to tell her whether she should vote for Cruz or Trump in the upcoming primary.
Rush has never endorsed any candidate in a primary for the 30 plus years he's been on radio, and he didn't take the bait on this yesterday. Explain to me why he should have "stomped" on Trump's candidacy when he doesn't endorse any Republican.

Levin, who I have listened to for years, has jumped the shark on his support of Cruz. I haven't listened to his show now for well over a week, because I am tired of the nightly diatribe about Trump and his reading of what internet idiots write on Levin's facebook page, etc. It is highly unlikely that Cruz will get the nomination, and what is Levin going to do for the remainder of the campaign, in the general, when he has already stated he will vote for Trump if he is the candidate. He is going to have to explain why he is voting for someone that he has spent the last few months trashing nightly, with just a bit more civility than Beck.

These long-lasting symptoms stemming from a concussion and blood clot,

My CHL instructor told us he once stopped his car to help a kid he saw being curb-stomped. he really thought the kid was going to die, so he pulled his gun, stopped the fight and called the cops.

The victim and cops were annoyed with him, so that's the last time he did that.

Bye, all. I have to hit the road for Houston.

For some of us it's visceral.

I've hated Trump since I first became aware of him when I moved to NYC in 1983. He was not at all political at the time.

Posted by: Soona at April 28, 2016 11:46 AM (Fmupd)

I do not think the punditry and most Conservatives get that Trump has charisma. It seems impossible that he would have it, but, he does. Just like Bill Clinton did. Just like Barack Obama does. Analyzed objectively, Clinton is the only one with halfway decent credentials, but, the charm factor cannot be discounted. Romney has a fabulous resume, but, negative charisma--on paper he should've beaten Obama like a drum, but, that didn't translate to actual votes. Of course, there was also massive vote fraud in key states, but, just because a board of directors would happily hire you to be CEO does not mean you can get elected POTUS.

The Grand Old Hag also has negative charisma. When coupled with her proven track record of failure and malfeasance, she should lose every race she enters, but, up to this point, the DNC apparatus seems to be content to let her have the nomination. I am not ruling out shenanigans that put Biden or someone else in her place, but, so far the bribes and blackmail are holding everyone at bay.

430 John Boehner called Cruz "Lucifer in the flesh" and said that he has never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in his life. He said that he and Trump are texting buddies.
You know through the internet we can go and read the actual report to discover context, right?

Here's what the report said for those who want it (semi) firsthand and not paraphrased...

Much of the discussion -- and laughs -- focused on Boehner's views on the current presidential candidates. Segueing into the topic, Kennedy asked Boehner to be frank given that the event was not being broadcasted, and the former Speaker responded in kind. When specifically asked his opinions on Ted Cruz, Boehner made a face, drawing laughter from the crowd.

"Lucifer in the flesh," the former speaker said. "I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life."

Boehner described other Republican candidates as friends. In particular, the former speaker said he has played golf with Donald Trump for years and that they were "texting buddies."

His friendship with Ohio Governor John Kasich, however, was a little more ambiguous.

"[Kasich] requires more effort on my behalf than all my other friends... but he's still my friend, and I love him," Boehner said.

Boehner for the most part accepted Trump as the presumptive Republican nominee, though he did express his surprise at the candidate's success. While he did not praise Trump's policies, the Speaker did say he would vote for Trump in the general election if he becomes the Republican nominee. The former Speaker said he would not, however, vote for Cruz.

439 Responding to a note on the previous thread about McCain serving on the committee that approved the JSF.

This program began in 1993, 23 years ago. It took 28 years to go from the first flying jet plane (May, 1941) to walking on the moon (July, 1969).

Also, in April 2009, the WSJ published an article stating that the design database had been hacked, resulting in several terabytes of key performance and design information falling into enemy hands, potentially compromising its effectiveness.

One might also note that Britain built and launched an aircraft carrier predicated on availability of the VTOL version of the F-35, which will be useless if this project is scrapped...

One could argue that this is a complete fiasco that imperils military preparedness for not just the US, but many of our key defense partners, including Canada, Britain, Australia and Japan.

Curious as to others' thoughts on the program.
