31 Since I got willowed....

Here is the thing about the delegate argument. Remember the whole outsider/non-establishment thing? That there are a lot of voters who want a non-establishment candidate?

The system is the establishment. It was established by the establishment. To say to people, well, you just don't understand, totally misses the mark of what is going on.

People do understand, and they don't think it should be that way. The whole thing, of Iowa going first, NH second, SC third.

That process made John McCain. It made Bob Dole. It made Romney.

So if people look at it now and go, hey, you are telling me I don't understand it, but the truth is, I get it, I just don't like it.

Why can't we rotate the order? Why aren't we doing winner take all in every state (that's how the national vote is)? Or why aren't we doing proportional in every state? Why aren't we even voting in every state? How come some are caucuses and some are conventions and some are whatever?

The GOP as constructed makes loser candidate. I loved W, really, but he just barely won. Both times.

So, yeah, keep going with the "you aren't smart enough or you don't care to know about the representative delegate system" blah blah blah.

How about you propose a way to get a Republican elected to the Presidency rather than defend the arcaneness of a losing system?

This is where Cruz has lost his mojo.

I believe - though I don't have the time to check it out - that the Sevres museum has a set of porcelain milk jugs (yes, I know) that were actually modeled on the Queen's lovely breasts. But I'd have to peruse my copy of Tony Perottet's Napoleon's Privates:

Expect it all to get much worse before it gets better, if it gets better.

I've heard Versailles had no bathrooms, is that so?

No one - save the royal family - had bathrooms per se; they had chamber pots. Although a primitive flush toilet was invented during the reign of Elizabeth I, generally people used what was called a "close stool," which, for all intents and purposes, was a box you shit in.

And throughout the reigns of the various Louis from XIV on, edicts had to be promulgated insisting that the nobility - men and women - refrain from shitting or pissing in one of the palace's many dark corners. The place must have stunk like Mooch after a wagyu dinner.

In Europe bathing may not have been healthy in those days. The streams were polluted as hell as well as much of the water supply. There is a reason most people drank beer and wine at dinner.

I'll just briefly mention again my proposal for a sorting algorithm.

If the majority of a state's primary/caucus vote goes to a candidate who then secures the nomination but loses the general election, that state drops to the back of the calendar for the next primary cycle.

States with a track record of picking eventual general election winners would come to dominate the front-loaded part of the calendar.

This does, however, presuppose facts not in evidence. To wit, a Republican Party that was actually intent on winning general elections.

Yeah, I basically agree with this.

Whoever in Cruz' campaign started bragging about snagging delegates via systemic malarkey was criminally stupid.

You just shut up until you get to the convention and then if you win, it's because of Cruz' superior organization.

Which looks fine.

But, during the primaries, especially this year-

Cruz would've had to get out in front with some kind of "I'm using the system against the insiders. Join my revolution" kind of message. Which of course would ruin his advantage of collecting delegates quietly.

Anyhow, stupid and it gave Trump another talking point.

It still might be okay if Kasich wasn't in the mix, but he is, so...

At this point, I think Trump takes it outright or is so close(less than 100 away) that he makes a quickie deal with someone to take it on the first, maybe 2nd, ballot.

If it goes past a 2nd ballot, he's probably out and I'm sure he knows that.

It's odd.... In "Farmers of Foorty Centures," the author observed that East Asian agriculture would never permit such a waste. Yes, they collected every last bit of human and animal excreta and put it on the fields and paddies. Their waterways were surprisingly safe, and tea-drinking, with its attendant water-boiling, protected them from many diseases.

123 "It still might be okay if Kasich wasn't in the mix, but he is, so..."

So the Cruz-Kasich alliance against Trump has blown up already, because of Kasich.

The deal was that they would each concentrate on winning their respective remaining strongest states, and avoid competing in the other's bailiwick.

Except that Kasich is now urging people in Cruz-leaning states to go ahead and vote for Kasich anyway, in defiance of that arrangement.

Gosh, it's almost like you shouldn't make these sorts of bargains with people who aren't trustworthy counterparties.

125 Part of what I hope President Trump can change that no other politician is gong to do is the campaign finance laws.

It's absolutely essential that elected officials are financed out of the Treasury, at the same level as their opponent. Let the challenger raise as much as they want, but match it with tax dollars for the incumbent.

In exchange, make it a felony for an elected official to ask for or accept any money.

This will go a long way in solving the problem.

209 60 Minutes reporting on congressional fundraising...

Who would be a congressman or senator?

What kind of lowlife would actively seek a job where the major part of it - 50% to 80% of your time - is spent begging for money?

Not only do you not have any time to actually look at the bills you are expected to vote on, but just the act of lowering yourself each day to ask strangers for dollars is sign to everyone in the country that you don't have the integrity to be in the office.

I know the congressman in my district and I wouldn't trust him to wash my car. He is just the type to cold call for money.

We've got to change this in order to attract better people to run for office. We can't allow a pack of panhandlers to run the country.

A good book to read in re Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette is Jay Winik's The Great Upheaval, which is a survey of the years 1788 - 1800 and what the American and French revolutions brought into existence, not only in their respective countries, but also in Catherine the Great's Russia and the Ottoman Empire.

Louis comes off not so much bad as simply slow, not willing to use force against the lower orders, but not understanding that his passivity in the face of their demands only encouraged the more radical elements to clamor for his head. Marie achieves a tragic nobility in the end, but, as an immature foreign princess surrounded by scheming courtiers and given to imprudent displays of wealth, she was very much the wrong queen at the wrong time.

I highly recommend the book.

George W. Bush and Bill Clinton both possessed easy senses of humour and could deliver a punchline. But we would also puke if we found ourselves at the signing of the Declaration of Independence on a hot July day in Philadelphia. Our modern day noses can't tolerate people who have skipped a shower for a few days - these were people who didn't bath for months or even years at a time. Americans did not smell any better than the French did, although Americans were probably less likely to douse themselves in perfume.

But if everyone smells, nobody smells. I've read some of Franklin's and Jefferson's correspondence written when they were in Paris. They never wrote, "Jeez, the smell of these frogs would kill an orangutan."

Another notable beheading was that of Ann Boleyn, and I am reading a book that has a mention of it, claiming Ann's shorn hair was secreted to France by the hired mercenary that did the deed, to be used in making tennis balls.

Four were made, three of which are in the New York City Public Library.

Henry VIII reportedly played tennis the day Ann was killed. She was done with a sword rather than an axe, the sword cut considered more stylish and neat.

The tennis game played then is called "real tennis" today, and is somewhat akin to squash. It is played in a walled court with a spectator gallery along one side, the gallery being at court level, and covered with a pitched roof.

You don't solve the problem by getting better people (for the most part). The genius of founders was in pitting these people against each other, to keep them from screwing over others, and entrusting them with as little power as possible.

293 People did bathe in the middle ages. That poeple did not bathe and smelled bad has been a myth so long that it is now taken as gospel. From 10 great myths site.

Not only is this a total myth, it is so widely believed that it has given rise to a whole other series of myths, such as the false belief that Church incense was designed to hide the stink of so many people in one place. In fact, the incense was part of the Church's rituals due to its history coming from the Jewish religion which also used incense in its sacrifices. This myth has also lead to the strange idea that people usually married in May or June because they didn't stink so badly, having had their yearly bath. It is, of course, utter rubbish. People married in those months because marriage was not allowed during Lent (the season of penance). So, back to smelly people. In the Middle Ages, most towns had bathhouses, in fact, cleanliness and hygiene was very highly regarded so much so that bathing was incorporated into various ceremonies such as those surrounding knighthood. Some people bathed daily, others less regularly but most people bathed.

Furthermore, they used hot water they just had to heat it up themselves, unlike us with our modern plumbed hot water. The French put it best in the following Latin statement: Venari, ludere, lavari, bibere; Hoc est vivere! (To hunt, to play, to wash, to drink, This is to live!)

Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at April 26, 2016 10:49 AM (lutOX)

Well, outdoor "plumbing" is OK, too, if one has the discipline to use it. A well-constructed outhouse need not be all that unpleasant, or smelly.

There is an old hotel in Lundbreck, Alberta, that had a two-storey outhouse, with a overhead walkway from the second-storey rooms to the upper deck of the outhouse.

I thought of this the other day reading Teddy Roosevelt's "man in the arena" speech on the ONT.

It applies to the left.
It applies to the Cruz-supporting truecon right.
It applies to me and my "let go of aesthetics" "cultural insurgent" rhetoric while I sit crafting blog comments at work.

This country needs to get back to work instead of getting out the knives over the argument over why we aren't working.

I watched that Tudor farm series and they spent a lot of time cleaning the utensils especially the butter/cheese making tools. Boiling water, salt scrubs.

Limewashs on wall were also big. Plugged up the holes, killed the bugs, and reflected the light and made the ye olde manor house look 100% better.

Louis comes off not so much bad as simply slow, not willing to use force
against the lower orders, but not understanding that his passivity in
the face of their demands only encouraged the more radical elements to
clamor for his head.
======

That, but mostly a monarchy held hostage by an archaic economic system that placed tax collections firmly in the hands of the financiers in the Farmers General. The epitome of "entrenched special interests". The British financial system (Walpole), was far more flexible and resilient.

The Bourbons were strong supporters of the American Revolution. Five years after Marie Antoinette was executed, the United States was embroiled in a Quasi War with the revolutionary government of France.

Hooper: Mr. Mortimer, what we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, a power-seeking machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is fundraise and seek power and look for interns to bang, and that's all. Now, why don't you take a long, close look at this sign.

319 I'd like to know how the rich kept their clothes clean. I know they wore white linen under the clothes that they could boil and launder. But how did they clean the expensive duds? You boil the clothes and the dye would leech out. The long dresses always dragging in the dirt or on the dirty floors. And if on grass, they would wick up the dew.

Speaking of heads, Toomey is missing his. Saying Ted Cruz is such a great conservative.

Like Toomey "the gun grabber" has any idea what a conservative would look like.

Sadly he's running unopposed but I've checked out the Democrat candidates and there's two guy running that are better on guns than he is. And guns was pretty much all he had and he chose the wrong side to take.

So I'll be voting for the Democrat come November if one of the good guys gets in.
