Trump Opposes North Carolina's Different-Gender Bathroom Law: "Leave It The Way It Is"

Prediction: within 24 hours he announces a major reversal on this plank and begins using the most extreme language possible to put him in sync with what he imagines conservative opinion to be.

"North Carolina did something that was very strong, and they are paying a big price and there’s a lot of problems," responded Trump.

"North Carolina, what they are going through with all of the business that’s leaving and the strife-- and that'a on both sides. Leave it the way it is. There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate, there has been so little trouble," he said.

"Strong" is one of Trump's favorite words. He usually means it in a positive way when discussing his own policies, but he occasionally deploys it as a nice-sounding put-down to mean "too conservative."

Trump is a very reactive and improvisational guy. By which I mean a bullshit artist. He's trying to figure out what to say he believes at any given moment, rather than having a core of things he actually believes.

Although a good case could be made for the electoral viability of someone who wasn't so damned ideological about about everything (as Cruz is), we constantly see the limitations of Trump's no-core-beliefs belief system as well. Not having an intellectually defensible position (as he hasn't thought much about these things) and not having a core of things he feels strongly to be true (again, as he hasn't thought about these things), he tends to guess, get the answer wrong, then come back with a harsh formulation going the exact opposite direction to try to prove his non-existent bona fides.

Now the guy who's selling himself both as "Mr. Anti-Political Correctness" and as a guy who can reconform himself to be "presidential" and broadly acceptable to the public veers too far to the left side of that balance. When he gets pushback, which he will, he'll wind up veering too far to the other side; he might start talking about bathroom rapes. Which are a real thing, don't get me wrong. But such things have to be discussed delicately; you wouldn't want to make it sound like most transgenders (or most Mexican immigrants) are rapists.

Well, no use criticizing Trump for things he ain't even done yet. But I've seen this movie before. He doesn't really understand conservatives, and when his natural liberalism gets him into trouble with his conservative supporters, he drops something ugly to convince them all he's really "One of Them."

This episode does smoke out Trump as to which things he's "not politically correct" about. There is definitely a class of things he's not politically correct about -- sometimes about immigration, but mostly about affronts to Mr. Trump himself. When challenged, he behaves in a decidedly "politically incorrect" way, which most people would simply call "rude" and "ill-mannered" and "coarse."

But on the things conservatives really want him to be politically incorrect about -- challenging the tyranny of liberal assumptions which so easily dictate liberal conclusions (as they're designed to do) -- he's reliably politically correct himself. Planned Parenthood is an important, fantastic women's health resource. I'm softening, I'm changing my position on H1-Bs -- we need these great people doing the jobs American's won't do (or can't do). Forcing schools and businesses to allow men with penises in the women's rooms has caused so, so few problems, in all honesty, if I can be frank.

One might question: on exactly which questions, apart from immigration (partly walked back, and probably walked back even further in interviews with the New York Times) and defending himself personally, is Trump actually politically incorrect?

Simply being an insult artist doesn't make you politically incorrect.

Obama's an insult artist too.

32 I'm in NC, and I have heard one person bring up the topic since it's been in the news, and that was to ask me what I thought. I told him I thought that anyone getting so screamingly worked up about a law that simply preserves standards of modern privacy and decency isn't worth listening to. He seemed to agree, we dropped it. (Prince is definitely dead, or a bunch of sites got punked.)

Posted by: Lincolntf at April 21, 2016 01:01 PM (2cS/G)

33 Donald Trump is cool with transgenders in the bathroom with little girls--because he doesn't empathize with people's concern for their daughters rights to some measure of privacy and safety.

I don't think he so much is fine with that, its that he's thinking with cultural pressure and emotions rather than logic. That's how most people who oppose this pretty basic common sense legislation get there.

They don't think through the practical and personal, experiential results of their wishes, they just think in the abstract of how it makes them feel and how nice it seems and how everyone they like and admire seems to lean. If they all say so, it must be right, and its mean to people to say no.

Plus, for Trump, I think this is a "I can differentiate myself from Cruz and get popular" moment.

Around here, homosexual marriage was being debated, before the Supreme Court violated the constitution, took a gigantic crap all over the country, and forced it on everyone.

There were more than a few regulars who said things like "well I'm fine with it, I just don't like the tactics" and "I don't care about this, but they're making me care."

I see none of that here, none about this law. Nobody is going "well maybe they have a point," its just flat out "are you f'ing kidding me???"

That says something. I'm not sure what, but it definitely says something.

72 Through my professional career, I have worked with a couple of transgenders. One was a she --> he with the full add-a-dick-tome. The other was a he --> she that just had their balls chopped off. I speak not of first hand visual knowledge, but from conversations.

Having known and worked with both of these individuals provides one with some comfort should they utilize a restroom with your young daughter (of which I have).

But as a father of a young daughter, if you are out and about without the better half or other female to escort your daughter into a bathroom - this is a scary situation. What do you do? Take her into the men's room? Send her in alone into the lady's room with your fingers crossed?

I've done both. And honestly, it comes down to having an "innie" or an "outie". You have an "outie" - to the men's room you go. I don't care if you have a dress on or not.

95 Trump will attract a lot of support with this position.

As with almost every other person in this country, I had no idea there was a problem with who was using what bathroom.

The best advise for something that isn't a problem but the left has blown all out of proportion - Leave it the way it is.

Fucking Brilliant.

If only half our politicians had the sense to come up with solutions like this, we would be far better off.

And what does the far right, bible thumping community want to do?

Cruz apparently is advocating that when Caitlin Jenner, in full drag, want to use a bathroom, he/she should use the men's room.

I propose that that would cause much more of a stir than if he just went into the women's room and sat down in a stall.

Perverts are perverts no matter which bathroom they are in. If someone is breaking the law, have them arrested. Otherwise, stop being led around by the nose by cause-driven liberals who promote stupid scenarios for their own purposes.

106 Trump has been pushing it with his whining cheating and corruption allegations to cover his sorry incompetent butt. He has poisoned the discourse on our side and been extremely demagogic. Yes he said that.

And now this.

That's it for me. I am not voting for this unprincipled boorish liberal who has never shown regard for or even given lip service to the constitution . (Actually, that's inaccurate. His overarching principle is Trump. And no, being crass and boorish is not a positive attribute.) I will write in someone else and vote for the down ticket candidates.

109 The New Rape Crisis

The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants has become Misterhood of the Potted Plants. Why?

*Feminists don't object to clearly phony rape cases which diminish claims of real victims.
*Feminists don't object as special Snowflakes claim victimhood at the drop of a hat or the thermostat, diminishing real cases of discrimination.
*Feminists don't object to Hillary unleashing private detectives on her husband's victims--not just the bimbos who agreed to his advances, but the women who refused him. Try to imagine their horror at being attacked first by the husband and then by the wife--and all to keep her dream of being the first female president alive.
*Feminists don't object to sex-selection abortion, even though it mostly kills girls.
*Feminists don't object to the high-tech cannibalism of harvesting of these girls for parts, even after years of complaining about the objectification of female parts.
*Feminists don't object as waves of foreign men molest them in the public square and public pools, only to have the police, media and politicians side with the molesters, silencing the victims in the name of multi-culturalism.
*Feminists don't object as schoolgirls shy away from sports, forced to share their facilities with males, even as they swung Title 9 like a blunt club to increase women's athletics.
*Feminists don't object even as vulnerable women and girls are losing their ladies rooms to any creep who can mumble the words "I self-identify". If I self-identify as your owner, are you a slave?
*Feminists don't object as schools tell parents not to label their four-year-old daughters as girls when they drop them off for their first day of school. After all, they may grow up to be men. Or one of the 23 other genders our over-educated elites have invented.

Feminists don't object. But I do.

The primitive caveman saw an upright rock formation and worshipped it as a phallic symbol. Our modern primitives, aka tenured professors, have concocted a Howard Johnson's 23 Flavor Medley of Genital Worship.

I prefer the caveman; his tuition didn't go up every year or leave his kids living in the cave basement, confused, unemployed, deeply in debt and with a degree not worth the woolly mammoth skin it was carved on.

Yes, the Sistahs are taking a beating. Literally. And loving it, evidently.

What is the New Rape Crisis?

Feminists Screwing Themselves.

142 This is beyond stupid. First the NC simply makes it illegal to sue a business for not allowing transgenders into the bathroom they want. If the business wants to let transgenders into the bathroom of their choice they are allowed to do that. So basically nothing has changed other than you won't have businesses sued because they do bathrooms the old fashioned way. Geesh. Second, mandating (as Charlotte NC tried to) that they can go into the bathroom they identify with is an open invitation to sexual predators to impersonate trans people during their offense. I am NOT saying trans ARE sexual predators; I am saying sexual predators will pretend to be trans to gain access to places. This actually hurts the trans community and strikes me as immensely stupid. But hey, no one ever said liberals are smart.

By the way, some of us call that a clue on the rule of the game. They haven't changes lately by the way.

Incidentally, I'm wondering where some of the more staid, immutable but nice sounding bones that got thrown to conservatives by people like Romney or McCain got them?

Ultimately, we are supposed to buy the idea that Cruz is the right choice because he sticks to his principles. Got it. I like what he states- but does that make him "electable". Conservative just keep saying it does. When I'm done laughing my retort is that is ridiculous. They then point to the polls and tell me his gap with Clinton is less and his negatives are not as high. Really- is the "he sucks less argument still floating around in our party?

Also, let's get illegal immigration off the table by just agreeing with the left on that, too.

And, oh yeah, the left wants to prosecute climate change deniers. Let 'em! Opposing "Science" just makes us seem like rubes.

And... while I realize some socon Bible-Thumpers have a problem with abortion... I think if we just adopt the "anytime, anywhere, for any reason, funded by taxpayers" position of the left... well, I'm just saying we'll be better off, that's all.

In my sleepy little hometown in Nebraska, we've got a potbellied 6'00" man who walks around in a pink effing tutu with polka dots every single day for the past ten freaking years. Guy's on disability or something, he never works.

There's a public restroom in our town. Yes, he uses the men's restroom.

Idiotic request for anecdotal evidence: satisfied. Men do not go in the women's room. Women do not go in the men's room.

To redefine the meaning of words and ideas is indeed power. This is power mankind sought originally by challenging God's authority, and it has continued for thousands of years, culminating in the unbelievably stupidity of grown men and women making the argument that there are no consequences or societal drawbacks to marching merrily into a future where gender is nothing more than a societal construct best left in the Dark Ages.

Idiocy of the lowest sort.

A large percentage of those who commit sexual offenses against children have somehow managed to become convinced that their child victims actually wished to be victimized, and that the children welcomed it.

That's why the recidivism problem has proven to be so difficult. The offenders are not merely criminals, but also, crazier than a shithouse rat.

Now they get to pick which door of the shithouse to go into.

As much as I loved that show, anything Prince played that was recorded after 1991 was met with bored indifference by the audience. Many of us miss Prince, but there should be some perspective: Despite being a prolific music creator, Prince has not contributed to the culture (musically or otherwise) since 1991's Diamonds and Pearls. The 20 or so (mostly self-produced) albums pumped out since then are forgettable if they can be recalled at all.

Posted by: redbanzai at April 21, 2016 01:36 PM (3JA/M)

233 Trump is pure left. The historical left. The anti authority left. He is not a liberal and today aligns "better" with what is called right wing conservatism but he is purely of the left. Like myself and like many of his supporters. This is a pure left position he is taking like all of his others.

This is a tricky instance in general because while the wind has blown such that squawking trannies and agitating organizations nowadays FEEL like they have the authority, in this case the ACTUAL authority in NC came down against them.

So a historical leftist will today generally be on the side of the anti-LGBTQ (as they are the group that is empowered in the present). But in this case, by NC essentially quashing their presumed authority and reasserting its own held authority, a true leftist will now be put back into opposition of the state on the basis of its attempt to be authoritative failing miserably on numerous economic and social fronts.

So let's see.....prior to enacting this legislation, NC presumably had relatively minor problems. A few squawking trannies here and a few interstate commerce issues related to transporting cartons of cheap cigarettes there. Now they have a shit salad of their own concoction with industry and tourism being beaten to piss. Over what? What was the best solution here now given hindsight? To leave it like it was.

Posted by: the other right at April 21, 2016 01:36 PM (MGAli)

234 This is why there's no trust anywhere in politics.

No one is truly on anyone else's side.

On the Left, they routinely eat each other in a constant battle for supremacy over a veritable army of layabouts, misfits, miscreants, and perpetually malcontent sowers of discord.

On the Right, the only thing keeping the alliance together is the cause
of money and taxation. Even that is a lie promulgated by the GOPe,
individuals who agree with the Democrats on virtually everything, only
differing in degree. We are not allies in anything. There is Left-Right, and Right-Right, and twenty factions inside each; we do not agree on abortion, we do not agree on raising children, we do not even agree anymore on whether or not men and women are indeed men and women.

This country is too badly fractured by its pursuit of each individual's pursuit of their personal lusts and erotic passions to avoid a real, actual war. We cannot unite because too few individuals can look past the things they desire and see the things that must be held sacred, the standards that must be upheld, lest all should come crashing down around us.

We can't see that, blinded by our pleasures and entertainment, and so we will end up laying blame, each of us on one another, when society can no longer move forward under its own weight and the collapse finally happens. Then there will be blood and horror and death, and, a little while after the noise has died down, we will look out at the ruins of what was the greatest country in the world, at one another who have killed their brothers and sisters and countrymen in the name of freedom, and have nothing left in us but to ask of God just what it is that we have done.

May the Lord preserve all the children in the horrors that are coming. They do not deserve the terror their forebears' sins are bringing down on them.

He had been declared SSI-disabled because he had found a psychiatrist to testify that his fetish was too powerful to enable him to maintain gainful employment. I remember the story you are talking about. In fact, there was another, similar story, about a similar individual, claiming he was an adult infant, who was determined self-sufficient because he had some carpentry skills, and sold baby cribs on the side while he lived at home (receiving SS/disability/what have you), and the State decided to cut his SS off.

The layabout then wrote a very public letter, which, IIRC, the LA Times published, threatening to commit suicide if the world took away 'the one thing keeping him here' - his government paychecks.

I love the Lord's children, all of them, even the rebellious ones; but jackass, if you are gonna threaten to off yourself unless the rest of the world pays you to pretend to be an infant, then by all means, do what you must. I am not willing to entertain these lies.

A few squawking trannies here and a few interstate commerce issues related to transporting cartons of cheap cigarettes there. Like Trump, you are ignorant.
What the NC legislature wanted to do was to LEAVE IT AS IT WAS.
The bill was in response to a city of Charlotte ordinance that would not leave things as they were. Charlotte was FORCING the admission of men (ALL men, however dressed) into ladies' rooms and locker rooms.
The bill did NOT say you couldn't have unisex showers. It said each venue could do what they think works best to accommodate the public.
IOW, they wanted to leave it the way it was.

Trump is for open borders (touch back amnesty and massively increasing H1B and H2B visa programs THAT HE BENEFITS FROM).

And free trade is a very good thing in general for society. What isn't good for society is the crony socialism that has had Trump in bed with politicians his entire life. Yes exactly, it does not make us feel good to support someone we don't like.

And yes, Trump will likely change his position on this gaffe and that is a good thing. We want a politician that changes his tone when his base gets angry. Look at Trump on the abortion gaffe. You want Milton Friedman's bad politician forced to do the right thing and that will happen here.

Because every politician is going to make mistakes. A lot of them in fact. You want a politician who will recognize it and go back and fix it, when it can be fixed.

Now look at Paul Ryan or Jeb or even Rick Perry. They are inflexible on amnesty. They know the base hates it and they DO NOT CARE. Rubio had the sense to lie better, but when it was game time he did not care that the base hated it.

When Trump fixes this, as ace predicts, it will show that Trump is not a crazy unbending demagogue. Trump can self correct.

The (presumably) awful consequences will get it (presumably) repealed quickly. It goes back to authoritarianism. In this case, yes, the state had the wiser perspective. But how many times does it not? What Trump supporters and true leftists want is for life to be LIVED first and then adjudicated. To adjudicate it beforehand is fascism, even in ridiculous cases like this.

It's probably unknowable anyway and that's the damned point. And also, that the people pushing this madness won't even acknowledge this, the very real concern that attacks on women and children are going to increase as a result, absolutely predictable. ______

That makes sense and core beliefs are important just like the results that the core beliefs put into practice.

For example: How has Ted Cruz demonstrated his core beliefs? Not made a speech, done an interview, or made a symbolic floor vote but actually demonstrated them.

Because I believe that when it comes to demonstrated core values - it is not as clear

Trump has a history of being loyal to his friends and making peace with former enemies like Ben Carson. While even even Jeb & Rubio haven't done a real endorsement of Cruz and he has thrown campaign advisers making gaffes under the bus

Trump has said favorable things about single payer and some lefty causes. Cruz has actually supported H1-B expansion and TPP.

Trump has worked in the private sector his whole life. Cruz has not.

Trump has raised a great family with some infidelity. Likely, Cruz too.

They both have made shady business deals.

300 287 Yes and all the pre adolescent girls of Charlotte would surely applaud the valor and vigor off your reassurances behind those disturbing hypotheticals

Again, conceding that this was likely to have been a problem-riddled policy for Charlotte, the issue here is the state pre emptively acting in a deleterious way towards a vital municipality before anything untoward has even occurred. Had the state merely *left it alone,* we'd either get to say: "Ah ha, see progressives, your own liberal policies are the problem!" or "Dang, it sucks that Charlotte turned into San Fran East." But now, by meddling in their chosen fascistic way, the dialogue is about how destructive GOP legislatures are.

I guess to some people this is a win because of their desire to extrapolate a hypothetical out to its bitterest end, and so in that way they can be pleased that we will never learn if Charlotte would have become San Fran East. Congrats!!

They really should just admit he is a liberal, and they just don't care.
More honesty that way.

I have said before, he is running fir the Republican nomination because he cannot go further left than Bernie, and he has the wrong plumbing to compete with Hillary. There was no room for him there.

But his policies are liberal, except a wall. But he adds that he wants a pathway to citizenship. Just like Cruz. Cruz does not demand a wall, but does want to enforce border controls. Really, I see no difference on that issue.

But for everything else, Trump's a liberal. He is not even trying to hide it anymore.

______

There is no kool-aid. I agree 100% that Cruz has far more stated conservative positions. In fact on the positions alone I would prefer him to Trump. But positions are abstract words. I can about what someone will actually accomplish with power in their hands

I don't think Cruz will get any of his stated positions accomplished, whether he believes them or not (I don't think Cruz believes his stated positions, but I don't think Trump does either. Politicians are power hungry and dishonest as a gorup)

Why won't Cruz get them accomplished? B/c I don't believe Cruz can bully a hostile congress into anything. I don't believe he has the charisma or the aggression in him. Trump has that. He got Carson on board. He stood up to the Fields charges, even if you think he was wrong, he demonstrated that he will fight and fight dirty. Whine Trump does, and the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

And with as corrupt as DC is, you have to fight hard and dirty and everyone will be partially or completely wrong a lot of the time and they will still have to fight anyway.

Maybe Trump uses that fight against us for stuff we don't like, but no one doubts Trump has the balls to get things done.

Also, like I've said in other threads - I can't personally stand Cruz b/c of his voice, look, and general creepiness. I wouldn't let him near my kids - its visceral. Sometimes a person just rubs you the wrong way through no intentional fault of their own.

I will still vote for either Trump or Cruz against the Dems in the general.
