Suddenly I'm a huge fan of Saudi Arabia.
CNN:When Obama touched down in Riyadh shortly after 1 p.m. local time, there were no kisses with the kingdom's ruler as President George W. Bush once exchanged. The Saudi government dispatched the governor of Riyadh rather than a senior-level royal to shake Obama’s hand, a departure from the scene at the airport earlier in the day when King Salman was shown on state television greeting the leaders of other Gulf nations on the tarmac.In fairness to the Saudis, it should be noted that Obama is an asshole and people don't like him. Well, some people, SOME PEOPLE, see a lot of winning there, but I see a lot of effing up. And, there are a lot of other minor achievements that are too numerous to mention. So yeah, we can all see the love there from the House of Saud to Barack Obama.

Actually, the concept of "Hey, let's put on a show!" was invented in 1937 in the Broadway musical "Babes in Arms," which featured a bunch of orphan kids who needed money so put on a musical stage show to raise it -- the real purpose of which was to allow the songwriters (Lorenz & Hart) to cram every kind of irrelevant song into the musical, even if it didn't serve the plot of the musical's main story arc. A song could simply be performed to the audience as "part of the show-within-the-show."
A few years after it was a hit on Broadway - - with probably the greatest selection of classic songs in any one musical ever in history - - it was made into a film with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. For some incomprehensible reason, they removed most of the classic stage show songs and substituted new inferior ones -- but even so, the film was a big hit, and spawned about 18 additional Judy/Mickey "Let's Put on a Show!" copycat films, which themselves spawned a zillion more copycat films with the same plot (but different performers), and the rest is history.
Short version: It didn't start with the Muppets.

I've worked with and for folks in a 'bowing culture' for many's the year, and it took me a while to figure out what to do.
They key thing is not to be subservient or meek, and never to bow first; TFG never seemed to figure that out.
Yes, if the culture calls for a bow, a bow is expected, but you give it in reply, and never first, nor do you stoop or kowtow.
In fact, my bow got me an automatic promotion at the the time of hire with my current employer - I met my supervisor, didn't shove my hand out to grasp his, but I didn't bow until he did, and when I did, it was as an equal meeting a peer.
The SCOAMF bows like someone who was told he needs to bow, but like someone too lazy to learn how and when to do it.

Actually it may well do that. The auto-ban effectively recognizes that those IPs are likely spammers and banning them keeps them out of the live threads.

Because the way it is set up now, the old threads effectively function as "flypaper" to help identify and ban spammer IPs. If all comments were banned on old threads, those IPs would only get identified when they spammed live threads.
The downside of not allowing live comments on threads that have been dormant for days is slight compared to the benefits of the spammer IP trapping effect.

She made it home and promptly began firing the caregivers that were hired for her.
The ENTIRE TIME we were on our 30th anniv. vacay, we were being texted Every. Single. Day. about what she was/wasn't eating and her potty habits.
The texts were coming from the always-world-traveling siblings.
I hope the old girl pulls through. Husband sent a pic of her all smiles in the ER, so hopefully she'll be okay and back home soon.

Not exactly nothing to do with, but not as direct an involvement as Saudi Arabia. Iran was not really involved either, at least no more so than Iraq where they trained people to take over jet airliners with... wait for it... box cutters.
Even the 9/11 commission admitted there was a connection, just not a very strong one.
