Trump: My Favorite Bible Teaching Is "An Eye For An Eye"

When I saw this headline earlier, I assumed it was some negative opinion piece analyzing Trump's behavior and deciding that this must be his favorite Bible passage (as well as one of the four or five he knows).

Nope. Trump actually said it.

Via Buzzfeed:

"Is there a favorite Bible verse or Bible story that has informed your thinking or your character through life, sir?" asked host Bob Lonsberry on WHAM 1180 AM.

Trump responded, "Well, I think many. I mean, when we get into the Bible, I think many, so many. And some people, look, an eye for an eye, you can almost say that. That's not a particularly nice thing. But you know, if you look at what's happening to our country, I mean, when you see what’s going on with our country, how people are taking advantage of us, and how they scoff at us and laugh at us. And they laugh at our face, and they’re taking our jobs, they’re taking our money, they’re taking the health of our country. And we have to be firm and have to be very strong. And we can learn a lot from the Bible, that I can tell you.

I think a quiz about obvious Bible knowledge -- who denied Jesus?, name three disciples, etc. -- would prove hilarious.

15 The "Evangelical" support for Trump has been one of the more surprising developments of this cycle. I suppose I had been conditioned for years to believe that these voters turned on whether the candidate walks the walk vis a vis their religion or personal belief system.

Trump is paying lip service to the evangelicals. Most of them know it. They also know that they are not electing the Pastor in Chief, they are electing a Commander in Chief.

Most Evangelicals care more about what he will do for their economy and jobs, their kids, their safety, their culture. Being pious is not that important to many.

They also look at his kids, and see he and his WIVES did a damned good job. Results do matter.

107 Exodus 21:
22 If people are fighting and hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows.
23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

Which would seem to have applications to abortion as well. I'm not sure how burns factor in, but that would suggest this is a broader principle than verse 22 suggests.

It's been noted here before that Obama was once asked, in the context of his ostensible conversion to Christianity, what he defined as sin.

This is of course about the least Christian thing anyone can imagine. A diligently observant Christian is intent on staying in alignment with God's values.

191 Good lord I cannot believe Ace is actually using this as an attack against Trump. Most Americans are down with an "An Eye for an Eye". A lot of our American generals loved the old testament. The old school militant Protestants loved stuff like that and the Evangelicals are partially descended from them. Old English puritans were always going on about "the bible in one hand and a good two edged sword in the other" in the 1600s.

Btw Jesus did not end the "eye for an eye" for all things, he just ended in the personal level, not at the civil level. Now of course Trump does not follow Jesus's teachings on personal level, BUT in this case Trump is talking about the civil level (aka government) and in that case it is acceptable for Christians to accept the eye for an eye punishment argument. If we did not, we would have been conquered on the battlefield by another country a long time ago. If I am wrong - What heck was the Atom bombing of Japan about?

SO come Anti-Trump folks, this is getting stupid. You hate Trump, but to bash him over stuff like this shows you how hatred can give serious tunnel vision sometimes. This is one of them...it is so stupid and snarky it makes Trump look good.

Duh. It's not about the substance, it's the hypocrisy.

"I'm a great Christian, really, the best". The DJT actually said something to that effect.

I'm not even a believer, just sort of culturally Christian, and that offended me as being against the spirit of the Jesus message.

So the big Christian's favorite verse is the one specifically repudiated by Jesus?

It's to Ace's point on how he would do on a quiz of general Christian knowledge. He would not do well. He does not know things because he does not have a curious mind.

Trump as with many, many very wealthy people doesn't seem to have a need for God (God had nothing to do with his success may be his view) and i don't think Trump would have any concept of the religious concept of submission to God, I think he likes the idea of Jesus or did think Jesus existed, but probably wouldn't support militant Atheists trying to take down religious displays.

It would be much more respectful to those of us that actually, you know, take our faith seriously rather than him flailing around and grasping for anything that he thinks sounds remotely biblical when it's beyond obvious he has not a clue.

I could vote for someone who was an atheist, agnostic, or even nominal/cultural Christian so long as (a) they're honest about it and, (b) they're going to protect my religious liberties. The pretending is insulting.

Ace, because people commit sins and fail to live up to their religious beliefs doesn't make them an atheist. Trump certainly has committed some well defined sins, but none of us are perfect in our faith.

Trump has said in interviews that he attends Sunday church when he can. He is a Presbyterian, like the Bush's. Quite the liberal denomination these days, but regardless. He said he always attends church on major holidays, and considering Melania has posted photos to her facebook page of the interiors of churches on holidays, such as Easter, what he's saying is not a stretch.

Now of course Trump does not follow Jesus's teachings on personal level, BUT in this case Trump is talking about the civil level (aka government) and in that case it is acceptable for Christians to accept the eye for an eye punishment argument.

...

I'm down with it too. It just seems strange to me that the guy who says "we can learn a lot from the Bible, that I can tell you" and "I'm a great christian, the best" doesn't seem to know that Jesus came with a message of forgiveness and turning of the other cheek, and that Jesus' words displaced the eye-for-an-eye laws contained in the Old Testament.

You know that is why Muslims are now overrunning Europe and the west. The Pope is basically begging them to conquer it.

But they will be presidential and will say all the nice stuff in the Bible to make themselves look so sensitive and "Jesus Man" like.

No wonder the Vikings ran wild back in the day until the Christians changed their tune about stuff like this. I guess having sacred objects taken by the Vikings over and over again and re-ransomed over and over got the Catholics off their anti-war kick. Maybe the Pope can get captured and ransomed a couple of times...maybe he will see the light.

347 After noting that the FBI has extradited and questioned an international hacker named Guccifer for the sole purpose of determining whether the private, non-governmental server had been hacked, Wilson asked Davis if he wanted to stand by the assertion that Mrs. Clinton's emails had not been hacked given this new development:

"Well, I think the answer is there is no evidence that the server, so far, hasn't (sic) been hacked but wouldn't be surprised if it had been hacked. I think that's what the campaign and Mrs. Clinton has said."

Davis went on to note that over the past several years reports have surfaced showing that governmental email servers had been hacked, including the State Department's non-classified server in November 2014.

In his response, Davis asserted that the Clinton campaign had stated that a hacking incident on the private server wouldn't come as a surprise.

And I think the whole "Thou shalt not judge" is often misused and overused. IMO, means not thinking someone else is s sinner when we all have our own sins and not pronouncing judgement on them. God will judge us all. Saying Trump doesn't sound like a practicing Christian is being particularly negatively evaluative. It's not like saying, "He's an evil sinner and deserves hellfire and I am righteous and pure."

368 Yeah it's almost like some verses of the Bible discuss specific situations rather than overruling everything else that's in there forever.

The Bible is the only book people read without any consideration for context or treat with any basic literary concepts. This is advice, not a rule. This is poetry, not history, etc. The most heartbreaking is when people try to use Bible verses like hand grenades, throwing them to blow up their opponent and giggling.

I can't find the article, but someone worked up an analysis of the "evangelical" vote in a few state primaries. The author was trying to prove that the more serious the voter's religion, the more likely s/he would vote for Cruz over Trump.

IIRC, there really wasn't enough data to support that thesis. But if you looked at the totals for the states, you'd find that self-described "evangelicals" broke about the same for Cruz as for Trump.

Never having seen/read this before, I found it rather profound.
"Each of you, my young friends, finds yourself at a Westerplatte in your own lives. Some area where there are tasks which must be acknowledged and carried through. Some just cause for which you cannot NOT fight. Some duty or obligation which must not be shirked; there's no "deserting" in these matters. Lastly: some order of truths and values which must be "held," "defended," just like at Westerplatte, so within you and around you."

We are at this conjuncture folks. Thank you St. John Paul II for that insight.

But in addition to forgiving Kelly, I hope, like a good Christian, he apologized for being a huge male member to her.

Also, while forgiveness is good, people's forgiving each other isn't what Christianity is all about. It is about being a Christ follower, appropriating his sacrifice for our sins to ourselves, trusting him, believing in His death and resurrection, and living for Him. I think that mostly covers it from a Scriptural perspective.

428 The problem isn't whether or not Trump knows verses out of the bible; the problem is that his claim that he does and then it being shown to be completely fake SHOULD be a demonstration to everyone that he lies constantly about everything he says. WHY does anyone believe he is gonna "build a wall", or do any of the things he claims? He lies, and he laughs about it. You loyal followers are just a big frakkin' joke to him.

btw, with respect to the moneychangers in the Temple, and why Jesus reacted the way he did - they had never sinned against Jesus himself, rather their sin was directly against God, and it was that they were scamming and fleecing the people and using the temple that was supposed to be for the worship of God to do it.

In other words, they were the Donald Trump's of their day.

Second, look at ALL the Obamas have done, including calisthenics in the WH for "The Biggest Loser" (in a regular room, not a gym), Tony Hawk skateboarding through the WH halls, screening w/Star Wars w/storm troopers right around the time of the San Bernardino shooting, etc.

Sadly, not sure how a WWF match would be that much worse than the Obamas.

Completely wrong. Jesus does not repudiate any of God's Law from the OT. Jesus takes pains to say not a word of the Law is abolished.

472 Trump is a rich target for legitimate criticism. The lede here is weak, especially after Trump already split the Southern Evangelical vote with Ted "Body of Christ" Cruz.

I'd also echo what many here have already said, that the hoopla about Michelle Fields was silly.

Charges against Lewandowski got dropped today, but this may not get the detailed press coverage as the original story.

At a press conference today, local prosecutors showed even more surveillance videotape. Michelle was not allowed in the scrum of reporters asking questions but along with some other reporters was relegated to a spot about 30 feet away, presumably because she had lesser credentials. She moved left and then snuck around the security guards to buttonhole Trump when he walked away from the scrum. So she put herself where she shouldn't have been.

Today, the prosecutors released the following, based on the additional video:

"First, in reviewing the video recording, Mr. Trump appears to react to Ms. Fields by pulling his arm back and away from her. This reaction could have reasonably led Mr. Lewandowski, following behind the two and from his vantage point, to legitimately believe that Ms. Fields was making unwanted physical contact with Mr. Trump, which caused Mr. Lewandowski to react by pulling her away. Second, as Mr. Trump's campaign manager, Mr. Lewandowski may have had apparent authority to assist [Secret Service agents] in the protection of the candidate, specifically to maintain the 'protective bubble' around the candidate."

I'd add that soon after this incident, Trump's Chicago rally was cancelled because of Soros' goon squad and bull rushes of Trump himself at rallies.

But the anti-Trumpers spun Michelles' boo-boo and the goon squads as evidence that Trump was somehow a Nazi and Lewandowski a brownshirt.

Just sayin'

How so?

It makes no sense at all to, in the context of Christian beliefs which this entire thread has been, take a report of Trump forgiving Kelly for her bad behavior towards him and equating that with divine absolution.

Matthew 18:
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?"
22 Jesus answered "I tell you not seven times but seventy-seven times."

If you want to make a reasonable criticism of that report, it's that the forgiveness requests weren't reported (and I only know the summary given by an earlier commenter) to go both ways, since he had some unpleasant things to say about her later.

517 "An eye for an eye" is appropriate for the civic authority. It establishes a measured justice. The ruler does not have the time to judge a convict heart, nor is it right for justice to be enforced unevenly, and easy forgiveness sets up bad incentives and penalizes the victims.
Mercy needs to be given readily from the victims, though. You are to forgive your debtors, because you too incur debts. To do otherwise is to show ingratitude to the ultimate authority who has given you abundant mercy. But there is no reason for a person to agitate for all convicts to be pardoned or other misapplication of the Semon on the Mount.
That said, it is quite unlikely Trump has thought this through, but as someone running for chief executive, I think he committed a classic gaffe--blundering into the truth.

You know enough to retract one false accusation, but wish to double down on the other. You are speaking like a foolish woman.

Repudiate:
- refuse to accept or be associated with
- deny the truth or validity of

Matthew 5:17
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."

So, is "eye for an eye" part of the Law and the Prophets? Yes.

Does Jesus abolish it? No. He plainly says he does not abolish any of it, not even a letter.

Woman, listen carefully to what Jesus said. The Law is still in effect and the Law says what it says. But Jesus taught his disciples that in certain situations where men do you evil, go and do this good to men. Because your father in heaven is perfect and this is how you act like him.

Jesus does not repudiate any of God's law, including "Eye for an Eye".

I did not falsely accuse anyone of anything and have repudiated nothing.

Additionally You.Are.Wrong. about this:

Matthew 5:38 through 42 -- "You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, give him your cloak as well. If anyone forces you to walk one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Jesus specifically references the law of eye for an eye and replaces it in personal interactions with turn the other cheek.

It is wrong because your understanding is incomplete on judgement... look at this link which I already posted: http://www.christianissues.biz/judging.html ... Judgement is not only allowed but is necessary in the body of Christ so that we do not fall into error or succumb to false teachings.

Your understanding about "the law" and Jesus are also incomplete. Matthew 5 is the Sermon on the Mount and, in it, Jesus turns several Jewish laws on their head... including eye for and eye (also the Jewish law on divorce). You cannot pull half a verse out of Jesus sermon and represent it as all Jesus said about all Jewish laws... even in that chapter.

I'm not teaching anything there. I'm telling someone to go look up a verse, and you're treating that as a theological statement on judgement.

You've jumped to a wrong conclusion when you say I am wrong. You don't even understand what I'm saying, so your judgement on what I said is faulty and pointless.

Complete miss. I was talking to Bandersnatch.

He was offended by Trump's favorite teaching of Eye for an Eye because he thought Jesus repudiated it, and he thought he knew more Bible than Trump.

Jesus did not. Bandersnatch has the excuse that he's an unbeliever. You, on the other hand, should know better than to state the nonsense that Jesus has repudiated God's Law.

Again, repudiate has a meaning described in a dictionary:
- refuse to accept or be associated with
- deny the truth or validity of

Will you claim that ...
Jesus "refuses to accept or be associated with" God's Law?
Jesus "denies the truth or validity of" God's Law?

562 A very interesting pick by Trump. Christians can only claim exemption from the old laws where love requires it, while the old laws are to be understood as setting down rules of thumb that offer a good approximation in most cases of what love would call for. Trump is saying, yeah, don't forget the main thrust: in most cases an eye for an eye will be the best rule. I like it. A very intelligent choice.

The "Christian liberty" to disobey the old laws where love requires it comes, is it in Two Corinthians? Seriously, it's either Two or One (and anyone who claims it is wrong to say "Two Corinthians" is not just an idiot but is committing the sin of pride).

The passage is where Paul says that we are now to live by the spirit of the law, which Rabbi Hillel and Jesus both say is the law of love (to love your neighbor as yourself). Both say that this is "all the law and the prophets."

All of which means that, to find what love requires, look first to the letter of the law. Good for Trump for reminding people of that.

Just popped back into this thread.
What are you trying to say..can you articulate it in a way that is comprehensible? "Flapping dicks"..."shot loads"..."hard again"..etc, contain zero information usable to establish a position or counter an argument.

Posted by: okay at April 15, 2016 01:37 PM (DmjGw)

567 One last stab at this thread for the purposes of instruction. In Matthew 5, consider the structure of this part of Jesus' sermon

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."

"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that ..."

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I tell you that ..."

"It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.' But I tell you that ..."

"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.' But I tell you ..."

"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you ..."

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."

If Jesus repudiated "Eye for an eye", logically he has also repudiated "don't murder", "don't commit adultery", "certified divorce", and "loving your neighbor".

That is plain nonsense. Pop theology treats this passage as Jesus loosening the laws that we are to follow, but that is completely backwards.

Jesus clarified that the Law given by Moses and the prophets is the bare minimum, and that those who wish to be considered God's people must go beyond it and be perfect like God is.

Jesus did not lower the bar. He did not repudiate Eye for an Eye. He raised the standard to complete perfection. To say he repudiated the Law here is to completely miss the point of this sermon.

So as to you, redbanzai, go be perfect like your Heavenly Father. Be at peace.
