I live in an area that has a larger Amish population. They are American by birth. Yet, the ones who remain in the religion after their teen years don't interact much with the general public except for direct commerce.

They don't kill those who leave the faith. They shun them. Big difference.

How anyone can expect a foreign born devout Muslim to assimilate into the America we know, hotdogs, baseball & apple pie is beyond me. The Muslims have it good over in G.B. yet they want what they left with icing on the cake.

39 Speaking of "tasteless cartoons":
Reason covers the case of an Anne Arundel county high school assigning students to write a satirical essay in the style of A Modest Proposal, then goes ape-shit when a student writes one, proposing to end racism by shipping blacks to the Sahara. Big meetings, Thinking About It, no mention of it being "satire."

No doubt next semester they'll do Dafoe, and the kid will be marooned on a desert island with one black guy. I suppose they'll do that on a Friday.

Remember Lampoon making fun of MAD magazine, with "Citizen Gaines" and the fold-in picture that turned a burning "USA tire" into "satire"?

Look like this kid just got [wait for it] a Swift kick in the ass.
I'm kind of proud of that one.

43 From the "Stupid Party continues to live up to it's name" click above:

But Ryan has aimed his sights higher than the nitty-gritty of legislating, putting committees to work on developing policies on issues from health care to national security to poverty that can serve as a "governing agenda" for the GOP. He's pledged to release the proposals ahead of the GOP convention in July, giving his Republicans a program to run on should they want to distance themselves from the eventual GOP nominee.

Welp, I say one thing for Paul Ryan-

as a bought, sold, and paid for creature of the GOPe, he certainly gives good value.

This is just another stop-gap measure by the GOPe-

to make sure that should any reform candidate,

whether Cruz or Trump

emerges as the nom

that they have their legs cut out from under them legislatively-

by GOPe hacks running on the "Ryan Agenda".

So, even if Cruz or Trump wins- expect;

No wall
Vast expansion of H1B
Amnesty
"Improving" Obamacare (not elimination and a market value system established)
Awesome new "poverty"(i.e..graft) programs
Awesome new "green energy" (i.e.. monstrous graft) programs based on AGW
Any gov't cuts deferred for 10-20 years

And I'll say one thing for the GOPe and their merry band of Cronies-

they are absolutely relentless in trying to destroy the middle class and your children's and grandchildren's jobs and future.

Good job GOP.

Good job.

The elephant in the room is advanced maternal age. This incicedence has a direct correlation. 69 The stupid party is missing the budget deadline. Again...

On top of that, we can all be sure the budget includes thousands of items that could easily be cut if someone wanted to do the work.

How to change it?

Voting for someone else hasn't worked in decades. Politicians make promises, but as soon as they get to Washington, shit changes.

The only way to make sure the federal budget is on time and under a fixed spending limit is to adopt the jwest pay plan.

Pay each congressman 500K per year plus a bonus of an additional 500K if they pass a budget on time and below a fixed percentage of the previous year's GDP (probably around 19%).

Senators would receive 750K base and 750K bonus with the same provisions.

The president gets 2 million base and 2 million bonus for the same thing.

Congressmen would also receive private jet travel (NetJets small jet) 200 hrs/yr. Senators get the medium jets, unlimited hrs. All contingent on meeting the goals. If they miss the deadline or budget amount, the jets stop flying.

The initial reaction from people is "No way, these people work for me! They should do their jobs for the good of the country!"

As we've seen, this doesn't work.

This plan will get action and save the country hundreds of billions each year.

100 Every two years, the average member of the house of representatives spends 1.7 million dollars campaigning; every six years, the average senator spends 10.5 million. So paying them 500K and 750K isn't even close to covering what they currently take in bribes.

We should pay representatives and senators with vouchers. That would fix it.

Actually, this should be fixed with the jwest campaign finance reform plan...

Challengers can raise unlimited amounts from any U.S. source, which is immediately reported on the internet. At a date certain before the primary and at a different date certain before the general election, donations are cut off and all money is put into an account managed by a third party accounting company.

On those dates certain, the U.S. Treasury matches the highest amount raised by a specific challenger and deposits it into a third party account for the incumbent.

The incumbent is not allowed, by law, to solicit or receive any money or gifts of value for anything while in office. Ever.

Candidates can spend on anything they want. The amounts are published, but the payee is not revealed to the public for privacy reasons. The records are available for the elections committee.

So, anyone can run for office and all it takes is the backing of 1 billionaire or corporation. They can spend as much as they want, but the incumbent gets just as much without being beholden to anyone.

I read the beginning of the book by the dad who started the anti-vax stuff. That guy was *desperate* to somehow have been guilty of inflicting the problem on his kid. I always assumed that it was because that meant he had (too late) some soet of conteol over what had happened, but lately I've been wondering if it was about the attention the kid was getting and he wanted some of that attention. That's pretty harsh, although within the realm of possibility, and a new thought so I might be being unfair to him.

196 Were I at all moderate, I'd say something like "I'm highly suspicious of The Spectrum." Being mildly moronic, I'll just say, the whole thing is bullshit.

The waters have been so muddied by mob popularization that you have to genuinely pity those kids and families actually dealing with real problems. The establishment of this "disease" is actually acting against them.

I taught several state-sponsored courses, coached, and was a scout leader for over ten years. Every child who was the least bit out of the ordinary, whether they were slow in traditional learning, fidgety, genuinely disordered-in-attention, or really smart, had been identified as "on the spectrum" by some or another teacher, doctor, counselor, or board-sponsored rump-psychiatrist. Some parents wore this on their sleeves as The Master Excuse, some invoked it as What Makes Mine Special, others saw it as an insult or a joke.

In almost every case, a little focused attention, often just mild discipline, was all that was needed to "cure" the problem. Giving it a DSM-sounding title was just a way of getting everybody's attention. As if the whole society had ADD, which it probably does.

201 "Every two years, the average member of the house of representatives spends 1.7 million dollars campaigning; every six years, the average senator spends 10.5 million. So paying them 500K and 750K isn't even close to covering what they currently take in bribes."

----

From the way I understood it, congressmen don't make most of their money from bribes or gifts or whatever. I thought it was basically through what we'd consider insider trading in any other industry. I thought the way it went was that a member of congress learns that they're about to pass some sort of regulation on industry X, let's say it's tax breaks in this scenario. They can then buy stock in the companies that stand to gain the most from this new legislation. Company does well because of the legislation, stock goes up, congressman makes money.

Maybe I'm wrong.

I shouldn't be - because I know it's red meat he has to throw out - but I'm sick and tired of the sidebar about Ted planning to prosecute Scankles. Because it simply won't happen.

"But why, MP?" you ask. Well, let me game out the scenario: by some miracle, Cruz wins. The election will be, as they have been since Bush v Gore, a screamfest on the Dem side, with the usual, "stolen election!" "not my president!" "Illegitimate!" shrieks in profusion. Immediate MFM polls (in the midst of the sudden reappearance of the homeless and the unexpected revelations that the economy is a shit-pit) will reveal Americans to be "more divided than evah! Eleventy!"

So Ted takes the oath of office. His first full morning in the Oval Office, he is visited by the "wise men" of the GOPe. You can't go after Hillary, Mr President, he is told. It's been a bitter election and the country is on the brink of chaos. Trying to prosecute her will destroy any chances we have of achieving legislative victories and will forever poison our ability to work with our friends across the aisle.

And think of the precedent you're setting,
another will chime in. Arresting and indicting people from a previous administration is something they do in banana republics. Suppose you lose in 2020? Who's to say a President Julian Castro wouldn't order you arrested? We know she's guilty as sin, but for the sake of the nation, the constitution and peaceable order (because certain people will riot if you prosecute her, **wink wink**), Mr President, you must tell the American people that going after Hillary is not who we are as a people.

And Ted will stand down. In the words of Hans and Franz, "hear me now and believe me later."

Basic survival skills. Stay with your vehicle if stranded, it's much easier to see a car from the air than a person. If you HAVE to leave your car, stay on the damned road. Depaz Blue Cane Rhum Agricole

makes for an interesting daiquiri and their recipe for Midnight Mojito is excellent as well.

Plus, as a bonus!

Here is my original (yay!) recipe for

Rhapsody in Blue Cocktail

2oz Depaz Blue Can Rhum
3/4 oz Amaro CioCiaro
3/4 oz Pedro Ximenez Solera Sherry

Shake with ice. Strain into glass. Cut slice of orange peel. Squeeze orange peel over glass to release oils onto cocktail. Drop in peel (optional). Drink.

Yeah, I know. Weird, fru-fru ingredients.

On the plus side, it drinks like a Manhattan, though different. And is every bit as good if not better.

They're giving up a 1st round pick, 2 second round picks and third round pick this year AND a first and third-rounder next year to Tennessee for the overall number 1 pick in this year's draft. Presumably they'll target the QB from North Dakota State, Carson Wentz. Big-ass gamble.

264 @244 "Indeed." Politics going to the street was also a result of boredom with a totally safe environment.

If you wanted to be all Social Science-y about it (and I have never seen this one done in real scholarship), you could make the case that all "Victorian" (term used advisedly, I know the Victorians) sexual morality was no more than a rational response to the ubiquity of the syphilis epidemic in the 17th century. About half the population carried it, and the death toll was the largest of anything since Black Death. That does not mention secondary effects, like blindness and insanity.

The French and the English blamed each other. The New and Worlds, still do.
And there was no cure or treatment at all for a generation or two, other than chastity. It's unremarkable (literally) that this would become a newly-rediscovered tenet of religion and general morality.

There were two takeaways, I think: (1) the dumbbells who set this thing up didn't realized there would be tons of surveillance video in a casino, and (2) once the video was released, the weird '"doubling down" by the sympaticos, who were hoping, I guess, that we wouldn't actually look at said video.

357 According to Fox News this morning the Anti-Trump / Cruz snark campaign attacking Trump over the Colorado situation (cannot call it a vote) is not going well. Independents don't like it at all. That is understandable, considering no one in their right mind would defend oligarchy.

The man on street will see it as:

1. Defending the GOP establishment in Colorado which is what Cruz (and his followers) is doing by default by mocking Trump's complaints.

2. It looks like oligarchy! It is looks like how the CCP chooses their higher ups. That is not going to look good to the average American. Only Anti-Trump folks stuck in the anti-Trump tunnel will see it as a positive politically.

Now I know some of you, including Ace, will explain those are the RULES! True, But...by defending those rules you come off as un-American. This snarky line of attack helps Trump, which is why he has been pounding it in his speeches. He had a couple of bad weeks, but instead of just being gracious in the Colorado victory by saying that it was a stupid way to pick the candidate, the Anti-Trump folks are wallowing in it! SO you won Colorado, but are losing the argument.

The general election is not going to be a back room deal set up by the oligarchs. Cruz needs to prove he can appeal to more than just bitter Anti-Trump folks and people who hate Trump more than they hate Cruz.

379 If you wanted to be all Social Science-y about it (and I have never seen this one done in real scholarship), you could make the case that all "Victorian" (term used advisedly, I know the Victorians) sexual morality was no more than a rational response to the ubiquity of the syphilis epidemic in the 17th century. About half the population carried it, and the death toll was the largest of anything since Black Death. That does not mention secondary effects, like blindness and insanity.

Posted by: Stringer Davis at April 14, 2016 09:50 AM (xq1UY)

Sure, except that there were something like 10,000 prostitutes in Victorian London. It was pretty easy for a Victorian Englishman to get laid if he had the money. It was also very easy for him to get syphilis. Hell, Oscar Wilde got it at Oxford (from a female prostitute) and the treatment was mercury, which made his teeth discolored. (Having bad teeth did not keep anybody from social advancement in England.)

Victorian "prudishness" was due, in large part, to the fact that there was no reliable or readily available birth control and an out of wedlock pregnancy ruined a woman's life and reputation. Things were a bit more lax during the Regency era.

It has always been women who have enforced community moral codes. Remember the old biddies in "Gone With the Wind" who shunned Scarlett O'Hara for scandalous behavior?

It's a harsh truth, and one I certainly didn't want to hear in the '70's, but when women as a whole sleep around outside of marriage and other women don't enforce the moral code - well, you have the situation you have now. I know a young Christian woman who is trying to wait until marriage, but that's difficult to do when you're in the minority because young men will just find someone who is more available rather than agreeing to wait with you.

Two things going on here...

First, the public perception is totally on Trump's side. This looks like a rigged system being manipulated to fuck the common voter.

Second, there are uninformed and sometimes totally fucking stupid people in our party who claim to follow politics who should know what is going on. They claim this an example of brilliant organizing and forethought by Cruz, but it's simply the GOP Establishment throwing their support and back room machinations behind Cruz to stop Trump on the first ballot.

The GOP should be neutral in the primaries, but they've gone totally #NeverTrump and are using every county-level contact and bullshit obscure state rule possible to get every delegate they can.

1. BS on the rules bit. THose were the rules, and trump didn't bother to engage.
2. Yes, several in the GOP, including one moron in Colorado tied their brand to 'nottrump', which was fucking stupid.
3It's fascinating (in a puppy being run over by a truck sort of way) to listen to people attack other people over a candidate, and then make demands about them shutting up and voting the way they ought to vote and not 'sit this out'.
4. It's even more surreal after watching Ace himself talk about voting for Hillary.
5. Listening to a billionaire with a history of being two faced, a slow payer or deal breaker whining about the fairness of a system that he never bothered to invest in is like.....watching a so-called real estate genius get his ass kicked by the East Fumblybuck village zoning board.
6. Everyone cheering on the trump hatred fails to even try to figure out how we're gonna drag the sorry carcass of the GOPacross any sort of line when they are actively attacking their front runner, while supposedly cheering on #2 (who for some fucking reason is doing a fake town hall. On MSDNC. With Upchuck Todd).....While advocating rules changes to let 15 people be on the ballot at the convention.

The avoidance of sex I was talking about was around for a long time before the Victorians. That's just the phrase that was used to mock it in the 60's. It was probably expressed most publicly in the late 18th century.

My point is that you find long periods of "moralizing" during which sexual promiscuity isn't mentioned all that much. It came to the fore, not due to some new religious awakening, but due to secular ("profane" in the true sense of it) affairs. And given the times and the severity of events, it's only natural that church teachings would follow.
