Here's how you can build one for your home. Since we are speaking about light bulbs. KDLT TV of Salem, SD needed their tower's light bulb changed. Definitely not a job for your humble Open Blogger. Repairing statues doesn't appear to be any easier than changing light bulbs. General science, the good, the bad & the ugly, not in any random order. Hey, it's the ONT. What goes up must come down. Axis of Oppression
Yet another example of the madness of academia and the credentialed ninnies who declare who is axiomatically and eeevil oppressor, and who is a morally-pure victim of oppression. Yup, do to good parenting, a good education, and genetics that you had no power over, you are either have "Domination" over others or are oppressed by it. Why, if you happen to be pretty, than you are evil and have unearned "attractive" privilege which oppresses the unattractive. If you are a native English speaker, than you are oppressing non-native English speakers you linguistic oppressor you. If you don't have disabilities than you are oppressing the disabled by simply not being disabled as well. Son was over tonight and said last night, middle of the night, he hears a great horned owl hooting, then there is this loud SLAM!! against his upstairs bedroom window. Security siren goes off, his dog starts howling like a maniac, son thinks some asshole is breaking in (even though he's on the third floor), and he grabs a gun and runs downstairs. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at April 09, 2016 10:34 PM (wB8Tg) Thanks. Yeah, the twice every twelve hours routine is going to get weird, with wedding trips, etc. coming up. A friend of ours said he knows a cat sitter who charges big time for doing insulin injections on a cat. So, son is over tonight and I told him to watch me give Spanky an injection. "Mom, I know all about that stuff." I show him how to push air out of the needle and fill the tiny amount. Then we go to relaxed kitty on bed. I instruct son to gently grab the loose skin on the back of kitty's neck and quickly inject the needle and tiny dose. Son freaked out, squeezed the cat's neck, cat is squirming and crying, son stabs cat in neck, and removes needle without fully dosing cat. Argh. So I showed Capt. Know-it-all how to properly shoot up kitteh. At least I have a great excuse for not having to accompany husband to ATL to visit his mother and elderly aunt. Yay, diabetic kitteh! Sigh. I overcame one of my worst fears (kind of) in Africa.
There was a place called the Ancient Cave on the coast below a place we were staying. I decided to go with husband and another couple, never dreaming the nightmare that lay ahead. We had to climb down 250 steps on a steep cliff, with crashing waves below. My heart was pounding but I made it down. Then our young, buff guide tells us we'll need to walk a ways over boulders and rocks to even approach the cave entrance. I have a really, really bad right knee (thanks, old, torn, kneecap) and say I'll happily stay seated on a comfy boulder. Young guide says, "No way!" and grabs my hand and drags me across a rock/boulder field you can't imagine. Husband is behind me offering no help whatsoever. Then we get to the first Ancient Cave. We had to walk under a wild bee hive, swarming around us, which was "interesting." Then had to climb, using fingers and toes, up a couple of yuuuuge boulders. Bottom line, I overcame one of my greatest fears and made it down, and the long, painful haul, back. Would I do it again? No. The "ancient cave" was a yuuge nothingburger. Posted by: yankeefifth at April 09, 2016 10:51 PM (vb33c) It's kind of a training question. If everything you have is light in the trigger, you train yourself to keep your finger off. If you switch guns a lot, a super-light trigger is a hazard. It is a *little* bit of an urban legend, but there is a reason people think Single-Action is mainly for people who train a lot, as opposed to occasional shooters. It is also not that hard to tune a trigger *up* a few pounds, I have a couple that are in the 4-5# range but glass-smooth because they were tuned and then run back up in weight a bit... because I also handle striker/DAO etc. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at April 09, 2016 10:56 PM (wB8Tg) 159

Re: team names
One thing about liberals, pretty much always, is they can't tell the difference between doing a thing and being forced to do a thing. If some team somewhere changed its name because some child had a sad, that would be a cute story. If someone DEMANDED PEOPLE CHANGE BECAUSE THEY ARE A PERPETUALLY UNHAPPY PERSON, that is brute mob warfare and/or lawfare. This is back to the whole "welfare is to charity as rape is to sex" thing. It looks, to the casual viewer, like the left can tell the difference between rape and sex, but when you look close they keep expanding the former into the latter's territory. "At least I have a great excuse for not having to accompany husband to ATL to visit his mother and elderly aunt. Yay, diabetic kitteh! Sigh.
Posted by: Jane D'oh at April 09, 2016 10:41 PM (FsuaD)" I feel your pain. So far I've not had to deal with feline diabetes, but I've had 3 cats with Chronic Renal Failure that needed subcutaneous fluid treatments every day. Learning to gently pinch the scruff, insert the needle under the skin, and turn on the water was nerve-wracking. The first night I attempted it on my own after being coached by the vet and a friend was a disaster. I turned the poor cat (a very thin Oriental Shorthair) into a pin cushion. We finally got it down to a routine, she'd follow me up to the spare bathroom where the saline solution bag was warming in hot water, I'd give her a delicious bowl of highly medicated Hill's A/D (guaranteed to put weight on anything alive enough to eat it), and she'd get 200 ml's while she ate. Some extra snuggling, and she was on her way. It curtailed my travel and entertainment, but I bought her an extra year. For a while it was almost an assembly line as I cycled the three CRF cats through the subcutaneous fluids every night. Turns out you get a better deal if you buy the 1,000 ml bags of saline in a case of 12.... My local compounding pharmacy was very happy with my business. Particularly, when I told the vet that the pharmacy could order in chicken flavoring for pet meds..... Good luck with Spanky's diabetes. Posted by: Jill v2 at April 09, 2016 11:05 PM (73TVV) 187

Regarding the day of max bird strikes, it wasn't just one window. Fuckers were coming from every direction. Weird. On time I was sitting in the backyard when I hear a loud thump right behind me. It was a red tailed hawk that was trying to get to the dog, but the bay window stopped him. We sat. There and looked at each other for a while. He seemed embarrassed. I thought it was very cool sitting three feet away from a majestic bird like that. Didn't get his autograph though.

The science experiments gone wrong hits close to home. They're not exactly experiments, they're demonstrations, and I used to do them routinely in chemistry lectures and for open houses. The thing is that to be dramatic and seize the audience's imagination they have to be a bit hairy, and so there's no substitute - no substitute whatever - for practicing them beforehand exactly as you'll do them before the audience.
I used to buy myself insurance against a failed demonstration by, early on, performing one that appeared to fail (and because of which I'd feign embarrassment, and move on in the lecture), but that required a few minutes' incubation time before exploding. The audience would jump a foot, and for the rest of the semester, I had them: even if a demonstration failed (which fortunately none ever did), I'd have their rapt attention because they didn't know if I might be sandbagging them again. "Son just told us tonight that his roommate's girlfriend's ginger kitten is dealing with what your cat dealt with. His abdomen was filling with water and he couldn't pee.
Together, his roommate and said girlfriend have spent $1,100 on the poor little thing. The kitten is the BFF of son's dog. So, they may have a year before the kitty dies. At least I think her kitten is dealing with the same thing as your cat. Posted by: Jane D'oh at April 09, 2016 11:09 PM (FsuaD)" Sorry to hear about the kitten. I hope the baby responds to treatment. That condition may be a bit different. My first fluid treatment cat (the Oriental Shorthair) had Amyloidosis, a genetic disorder that causes the kidneys to clog up with extra protein until they finally shut down. She was only 7 when she was diagnosed. She got thin and dehydrated because the kidneys weren't able to clean the crud out of her bloodstream and she finally felt too lousy to drink enough. She fell off a chair and looked confused so I realized she was sick and rushed her to a vet. The fluid treatments compensated by rinsing out the kidneys so the crud cleared out. It couldn't fix the damage, just slow it down, but she was pretty good for that extra year. Cat 2 had declining kidney function supposedly from age (she was 17 when diagnosed). She did very well on the fluid treatments until about year later when she suddenly got very lethargic and her abdomen was distended with fluid. The vet concluded the kidney disease was actually a tumor that had started bleeding out. She had survived Radio-iodine treatment at 14 to treat Feline Hyperthyroidism so she'd already dodged one major problem. That was an expensive treatment, (radiation treatment requires a 4 day stay after the injection) but it completely fixed the FH so it was worth it. Cat 3 was just old and her kidneys were wearing out. She hung in there for about 2 years and was roughly 20 when she died. For a while I thought I was running the Home for Geriatric and Chronically Ill Cats. Darling four-footed kids.... They move in and wrap their paws around your heart. Deer Hunter is interesting... a film that, IMHO, you don't quite 'get' until you've turned the experience over a few times in your mind afterwards.
I know the first time I watched it, I thought it was a disorganized mess. RWC, what Merovign said.
It's not fair and I hope somehow it changes eventually, but for the time being at least, non-super-Alpha males 'liking' female coworkers, and showing it in *any* way, shape or form, is a firing offense. Sheeeiiit. If my big dream comes true, I make my movie, I get a job on a real feature, and *Mila Kunis* is one of the actresses hired, or a producer? I've been in the E-suite for quite some time and I like to think that I bring some common sense, but there's only so much you can do with HR. My favorite saying to HR: I can't do that? No, I'm not supposed to do that. Big difference.
Posted by: Duke Lowell at April 10, 2016 12:01 AM (kTF2Z) 347
There's a section in "SJWs Always Lie" on how to deal with HR invitations to incriminate yourself.
If you had sent an Outlook request to your crush for a meeting "under my desk" and you CC'ed "my pants" then, yeah, that might be a problem for you. Otherwise, you should demand that HR give you their charges in writing, explicitly, before the hearing. HR aren't your friends (and they're not your crush's, either). They're AT BEST out to limit the company's liability. At worst, they're an autonomous SJW empire. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at April 10, 2016 12:02 AM (6FqZa) 348

But... Dr. Rahbar was assertive and I also thought that if she had a problem with me, she would bring it to me *herself.* It would have made perfect sense. Would I have been embarassed if she had? Of course, but that would have dissipated and I would have ultimately understood and behaved better. But no. She was too good to address me directly. She kept going to my superiors which left me easily 50 times more embarassed and defensive about my behavior, from which everything snowballed for me. I had to unplug it for a couple of minutes (actually I was unplugging it and plugging it in different outlets) before it would fire up. I could smell the escaping electrons by that point so I checked the vents to see where the smell was coming from. TL;DR, Power supply is cooked. Good thing I don't use it much.

Tammy, I think one of the things that frustrated Dr. Rahbar, and made her panic about me a bit?
She was *very* used to all manner of crude come-ons by her patients in the ward. She was attractive, yes, and probably got hit on in some strange fashion by patients every day. I know of at least one inpatient who would often ask her out, then openly scream to everyone she was a whore when she would ignore this guy. But me? I was a co-worker, so she couldn't just go to others on the staff and have my meds adjusted or my privileges revoked. That might have scared her... so she overreacted. Doesn't excuse anything, but I can't help but wonder. Posted by: qdpsteve at April 10, 2016 12:40 AM (ntObR) 474

It's weird how there always seems to be some trigger for such things, even when there should have been no possible relationship. I suppose it has to do with the psychological effect of coincidence. People will think it's a big deal if they were thinking of somebody, the phone rings and it's the person they were thinking about! Woo! Never mind the dozens of time it may have rung in the same week to be somebody who wasn't on your mind. Somehow event conspire to make things stand out when nothing unusual really happened. Was the machine sitting around a long time unused? Maybe the PSU was borderline all that time. A while back I sent a bunch of old PATA hard drives to Merovign, IIRC, and they were all DOA. This was really upsetting because I couldn't think of any reason why this should happen. I'd checked them all about a year earlier to see if there was any data to recover before it became even more inconvenient to connect PATA drives. They were kept indoors and not subjected to extremes of weather or humidity. Unless something not obvious happened in shipping, it's a mystery and left me feeling like I'd screwed over an online friend, not to mention the preference of seeing them put to use rather than just tossed in the trash for lack of application. Nope. In this day and age all she has to do is go to HR and say she was uncomfortable. That's it. She can end your tenure with that company with that one phrase.
I didn't say HR would follow the law, but I know a warning would be required for her to sue, and I really thought more was necessary to legally fire the other person. Like I said, I'm no expert on this, though, so, if I'm wrong I'm wrong. HR and the harassment person specifically told me, she has all the rights in the world and I have none. Up to and including, making up lies about me to get me fired. God help them if you had recorded that. If that suits them, that suits them, but as a legal matter, no, not at all. All of this office talk is a perfect exemplar why the birth rate is down and PC crazy is up.
Historically bonding occurred where and when people were in frequent proximity such as church or work. Today traditional role playing is a firing offense. Men are neutered and women are cast in a mixture of helpless infant/Brahmin. This confusing environment is antithetical to creating a family. PC is killing America. y5, I need to be in the right frame of mind. I don't ever want to get as emotional about what happened as I was a few years ago.
I will admit, one thing that really helped me after this whole episode... my counselor at the outpatient clinic I was attending, left the clinic, and replaced himself with... another young, attractive, dark-haired woman working on getting her PsyD. I know it might seem weird but it helped that I had another woman I found attractive (though not as attractive as Dr. Byrne) help me through what I could only call the grieving/healing process at that time. She was also somewhat able to explain Dr. B's POV in far less strident-feminist terms, empathetic to me. I still hurt, but that second psychologist helped me *a lot.* In the meantime.... two songs that do help me a lot are "Tired of Toein' the Line" and "I'm Still Standing." If your HR folks are members of SHRM, "Society of Human Resources Professionals", then do a search for the SHRM Code of Ethics, read it in some detail, and see if their actions are in violation of said code. Then when they speak threateningly to you again, just let 'em know you're going to file a complaint against 'em with SHRM, if they stay on their present bearing and speed. Demand that every word of what HR says to you be given in written form, from here on out. Make 'em put their necks on the block for a change. Finally, the only kind of lawyer worth a damn in these matters is a Board Certified Employment Law Attorney. Best if you can find one that's former EEOC, or who normally defends companies from EEOC complaints. They'll be your best defense, too. Slippin' Jimmy from the teevee show might look like a spectacular option, but really, this is a specialty thing. Go with the specialist. But do you homework on the SHRM thing. If they have a PHR (Professional, Human Resources), or SPHR (Senior, same as above), you can't get their cert yanked. But an ethics complaint against 'em to SHRM is some really heavy shit, and can ruin their entire career, just as they'd delight in trashing yours. Some ammo in YOUR magazine, for a change. Ok, two things before I go to bed. Rockies pitching sucks. They've given up 29 runs in two games to a team that was virtually shut out their first three games. We put up AA pitchers against MLB teams. Management won't deal for any pitching, I guess they figure that if they can put butts in seats for the games and have multiple losing seasons, it's ok for the their bottom line.
Number two, a really good film, my personal favorite is "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" It stars David Bowie and Tom Conti. WWII prison camp in SE Asia. It really is more impactful if you understand the Japanese mindset during WWII. To me, who has studied the Pacific war, it was a very powerful movie. YMMV.

Can you say "status-conscious"? Just dipping in very late but always nice to see gun talk.
On the old hockey player. I mentioned it here once before, but until a few years ago a guy in his late 80s would play at Friday pick-up hockey. Finnish immigrant, had been a merchant seaman. One day I finally asked him what he did in the war - meaning the Winter War with the Soviet Union in 1940. He said he and the other younger boys were given old rifles to guard bridges in the rear and things like that, while his older brothers were up in the forest fighting the russkis. He brought his gear in an old suitcase. It was fun explaining to the young guys, in shock to see an octogenarian in the locker room, that "you want to be him some day, that's all there is to understand". Have an invite to play in that tournament up in Santa Rosa (the one started by Charles Shultz) this summer. Posted by: rhomboid at April 10, 2016 01:56 AM (QDnY+) 564

X-raying the package shouldn't have killed the drives, unless the X-ray rig was something you'd use on the battlefield or to carry on conversations across vast expanses of space. At worst they'd need to be reformatted but even that strikes me as unlikely. Places like Amazon sell hundreds or even thousands of drives, bare or in enclosures, every day and ship them without incident. If they used an MRI on a box containing over a dozen metal objects of that size, I think I would have heard about it after the several tens of thousands of dollars in damage it would have done. The drives were probably bad when I boxed them up but I cannot think of any specific reason that should be so. I can only wish I'd tested them immediately before, just to save the hassle and disappointment all around. Posted by: Epobirs at April 10, 2016 02:05 AM (IdCqF) 571

I'm digging into things that I'm not too happy about: janraincapture.com and ensighten.com. Both are designed to mine identities in real time to find "decentralized authentication method for the new Web".
In other words, if you have a job where you work as a professional with one email and one IM and one login; then you live your public life as a homeowner with another email and another IM and another nic; then you have a specific laptop that you use for surfing porn and cruising tinder with yet another email and another IM and another nic.... Then these guys want to create a profile under their control that links your various worlds together, so that when you book a business trip to a convention in Las Vegas in your professional account, you can get served ads to your personal kinks on your porn laptop. And they absolutely, positively, never, ever, ever could possibly cross the streams and backfeed porn into your public life. If there's an emanation and penumbra of a right to privacy that puts abortion providers beyond the right of states to regulate -- then, surely, there is a right to privacy that should regulate cross-platform/cross-identity data-sharing very strictly. The knowledge the Horde has is awe inspiring at times. Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Yawnnnn at April 10, 2016 02:37 AM (WVsWD) 584
I don't recall Steve ever making reference tot he incident previously, so I don't know if I'd call it obsessing if a conversation revolved around a long ago trauma. It happens. Something you'd left alone for a long time becomes like yesterday when it is the focus. If he cannot talk about here, then where?
Posted by: Epobirs at April 10, 2016 02:23 AM (IdCqF) He has spoken of it here before. And he admits he was staring at her. I don't think Steve is a creepy stalker type, because if he were, he'd not be likely to be talking about it here. But it was apparently unwelcome attention to the woman, for reasons that we can only conjecture. And she handled it badly, going to HR instead of politely but firmly giving him the brush-off. And Steve has moved on to another job, which is a good thing, but he's still letting this incident in the past eat at him, and that's not good. Sure, he may have been ill-treated, but hospitals are horrible, ill-run bureaucracies, and treating people badly is what they do best. As long as Steve carries this incident like a cross, he's letting the bastards win. The best revenge is living well. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 10, 2016 02:40 AM (UsLZp) 585
Anyway, time for me to sack out.

I shot several DA/SA pistols.
I ended up doing the best I could quickly on the first DA shot then laying it down for the remaining SA shots. Shot an IDPA match with a 1911 once, I was on fire accuracy wise. Purposefully slowed the draw down so I could get the -taking the safety off properly- becaulse you know... shoot your foot-ites.. Posted by: jake at April 10, 2016 01:40 AM (Ad5PE) My Sig is DA/SA, it took a bit to get used to that first long trigger pull but it certainly does give you a chance to think about what you are doing and re-cage the brain-housing group if needed. I'm glad that I work for a small business, so there's none of that HR bullshit. Of course, there are no women where I work, so it's probably moot.
There is this one woman who works across the street from me. She has a nice body and usually wears cool boots. I like watching her get out of her car and walking to the door. Posted by: rickl at April 10, 2016 04:50 AM (sdi6R) 594
Not bragging, more like opining over opportunities missed.
Posted by: Tilikum Armored Killer Assault Whale at April 10, 2016 02:29 AM (hVdx9) Trust the voice of experience. Do not date co-workers. Remember, if it goes into a screaming breakup, do you want to see this person every day? In fact you will spend more waking hours with this person after a breakup than you will with any subsequent girlfriend. And that is just the first level of effed-up-ness. Ask me how I know this. The night light video reminds me of a running gag in the lab many years ago. A grad student would use a UK built Variac to power a heater using alligator clips. The Variac needed 240VAC and was powered by a buck-boost. Despite many warnings, the student kept believing that when the Variac was dialed to zero, the clips would be at zero Volts. Unfortunately, they would be at 115VAC. So when he would forget this and drape the clips carelessly on the bench, some impromptu spot welding would occur. Good Times.
