All kids need grimy, hard labor jobs growing up. Hauling hay, digging ditches, cleaning grease traps, etc. You learn pretty quick that your time is precious and that you don't want to do those things for the next 50 years.

So I got a job driving truck after the trucking business was deregulated and wages (and freight rates) were cut by two thirds by new companies going irregular route truck loads. You couldn't get into the trucking business when it was regulated unless you knew someone in the union or had political connections. And even after the rates/wages came down it was better than what I had been making. You just had to work 120 hours a week, live in the truck, and risk prison time.

I'm thinking that it's execs of large businesses who have a little more flexibility in making up the higher cost of labor than a small businesses. Ever notice that many of the exercise machines mimic farm work? Via Althouse, I read recently that the treadmill was devised by a miller as a punishment for prisoners so as to grind corn or pump water - so that's agricultural too.
BTW - never bucked no bales. Shit, I'm not sure what that means. I did a lot of house painting.

Giants pitcher Madison Bumgartner (who, predictably, killed my Brew Crew yesterday) has credited his strength and stamina to having grown up doing chores on a farm.
My dad also grew up on a farm and said that after farming, nothing else seemed like work to him.

It just surprised me because most contractors I know don't want to pay the upfront for steel and then have to deal with storing them.
You get one heck of a good product tho!

IIRC, that's something Obama wants to "fix" - so that any salaried job where it is less than the minimum wage would have to go hourly, which would likely result in higher costs for overtime? Something like that...

That was me. My cousins from KC would come down for the summer and work in Grandpa's other hay fields. They made a killing.

My great grandfather had a large self-sufficient farm in a beautiful location in NC. All his children moved to the city and found easier jobs. My father said if only he'd been older at the time he could probably have inherited the farm because his grandfather didn't want to see the farm broken up!

Is there anybody here who DIDN'T buck bales at some point? Hot, scratchy, miserable work, but I still remember that smell!
We would cut off old jeans as shorts to use for haying. We left the front of the legs long, down to the knee, so that we could "knee-lift" the hay up onto the wagon without getting that hellish rash on the upper thigh.

DS ... Makes sense. For whatever reason, that's just how they did it in Southern Indiana back then. Saw several contractors doing the same thing.
Did help you get done quick, though. If I remember, we'd set the outside ... then cut, bend, and tie the rebar, then set the inside, shove ties, and pour. Sometimes they'd switch it up, start at a corner, and do rebar as they went.

What was really interesting is that during WWI, the government had planted RR right of ways with hemp to make rope. Remnants of that still grew wild along the tracks in some areas. Those limits are a pain in the ass. Last winter, at the last minute, with the truck on it's way, I ran out to the ATM to get cash for heating oil (the company gives a nice discount for cash). I needed about $700, waited in the drive-thru lane, could only get $300, so then I had to go inside, wait in line again, to get the remaining $400. So dumb.

Only benefit (other than the money) -- I got to use aerial photos to find the fields. Now I spend time on Google Earth, just for fun. Having examined some Third World towns, I'm so glad to be in the U.S.

My worst job was clearing weeds from irrigation ditches. One of us drove the gas tank loaded on a truck along the side of the ditch and other walked along with what was basically a home-made flame thrower, burning out weeds. Every insect and snake in those ditches objected to the burn out, so you tended to get bit, and the damn gas tank made me nervous as hell.
I do not miss that work at all. Ever!

Yes, they do. It's not just an entry wage anymore. And if you don't take it, there's millions of people without jobs who'll jump through flaming hoops for it. It's an employer's market these days, and even moreso because they've oversaturated the labor market with immigrant labor.

Train/backhoe collision.
Back in the small town where I lived and worked there was a freight spur that brought in railcars to the local businesses. The track was in such bad shape there was a fifteen mph speed limit for trains. You could drive up to the crossing, stop, and see the train down the track, and wait there ten minutes or more before crossing the track.
Meanwhile, over at my cousin's, there was an Amtrak crossing. I drove up to the crossing, stopped, looked, and saw the train way down there, and started crossing the track which was soooo rough you had to go real slow. I ran the effing red light to get off those effing tracks and still have no idea where that train was.
Then there was the time out in Orange County where I had to get backed into a loading dock, and the only way to get the trailer where I needed it was to pull out onto the railroad tracks, in a nearly new truck with an automatic transmission. I'm sitting on the tracks, praying that one of those 100mph commuter trains doesn't come through there because I can't get the effing automatic transmission to go into an effing gear. (There is a periodic adjustment to the clutch brake that required regular adjustment.)
And then there was the time in Arizona, coming down a long grade at the bottom of which was a rail crossing. Coming from the other direction was a tanker who stopped. 'He has to stop', I said. I kept going and only then saw the crossing lights were activated. That's when I heard the train horn from about fifty feet away. Apparently it wasn't moving very fast.
And then there was the time in Ohio where the crossing lights apparently malfunction in the on position; no train anywhere. What do you do? Drive on through?
Back in the small town where I lived and worked there was a freight spur that brought in railcars to the local businesses. The track was in such bad shape there was a fifteen mph speed limit for trains. You could drive up to the crossing, stop, and see the train down the track, and wait there ten minutes or more before crossing the track.

My dad and uncle got into the roofing business when a hail storm went through the neighboring town. My uncle hired his two jr high/high school aged daughters and my dad hired me, my 3 sisters and younger brother.
I think we did that for 6 years, at least I did it for that long before I could go to college and never work that hard again. People used to drive past our houses to look at the "all girl roofing crew".
When we didn't have a roofing job, I spent the rest of the time on the tractor discing. Cab, but no air conditioner and the windows didn't open that wide. It was hot. But it was better than roofing.
When I went in for volleyball practice that fall as a senior, one of the sophomores asked me in all sincerity "Are you an American Gladiator?" She wasn't that bright, but still...
All 6 of us have at least 4 year degrees, and 3, going on 4 of us, have Master's degrees. It is safe to say we don't ever want to have to roof again.

If a MAN - even a member of the hallowed press - was pulled back away from a presidential candidate surrounded by secret service agents - and then COMPLAINED about it, practically ANYBODY would call such a guy a slang term that starts with "p".
If he were to actually seek out a cop to file a complaint to, one has to wonder how long he would have to harass the the authorities, even to be taken seriously. Here, the VERSITILITY of profanity comes in handy, where simply describing such a person as "an asshole" just wouldn't seem to cut it, and creative terms that just get better the more syllables you add can provide a side element of entertainment to attempts at accurate expression.
Such terms would NOT just be used by the general public hearing about it, BTW. Perhaps the MOST colorful and inspired terminology would surface among the judges, and jurors being asked to move this thing forward, all of whom have REAL things to worry about without being disrespected by having their time wasted with such trivia.
But Michelle Fields is not a MAN, just a delicate flower and a special snowflake who is clearly not cut out for that kind of detail (BTW, any man would be wise to think twice before even staying in the same room with her). The term for such an individual who COMPLAINS about that situation might be similar to "princess".

1. If Ted Cruz is anti-establishment, why was he just last year coauthoring op-eds with Paul Ryan, the epitome of the establishment? Also, he favored fast-tracking TPP, which means he wanted Congress to fork over authority to a witless president.
2. If Donald Trump is in all ways less conservative than Ted Cruz, why has Ted Cruz had to move to the right on illegal immigration to align more with Donald Trump's position? Why did he have to do the same regarding H1-B visas? I'm referring to Trump's original policy paper written by Sen. Sessions, not his waffling on the issue since.
3. Heidi Cruz works for Goldman Sachs, who received a $10 billion bailout from the government. It has since offshored many jobs. Heidi is said to have a tremendous influence on Ted, more than most candidates' spouses (with the obvious exception of Hillary). What should we make of this?
I'm asking you to address these because they are pretty significant issues for our movement, and Cruz's past actions need to be explained. I know you once owned up on Cruz's position on H1-B's, but I think a coherent defense of Cruz's actions is in order. I'm not writing this in an argumentative way; I genuinely would like to see you address this.
For the record, I would be happy with Trump or Cruz, but happier with Trump. You have clearly outlined Trump's liabilities; outlining Cruz's would be good service to conservatives.

A few questions I would appreciate you answering in a post:
1. If Ted Cruz is anti-establishment, why was he just last year coauthoring op-eds with Paul Ryan, the epitome of the establishment? Also, he favored fast-tracking TPP, which means he wanted Congress to fork over authority to a witless president.
2. If Donald Trump is in all ways less conservative than Ted Cruz, why has Ted Cruz had to move to the right on illegal immigration to align more with Donald Trump's position? Why did he have to do the same regarding H1-B visas? I'm referring to Trump's original policy paper written by Sen. Sessions, not his waffling on the issue since.
3. Heidi Cruz works for Goldman Sachs, who received a $10 billion bailout from the government. It has since offshored many jobs. Heidi is said to have a tremendous influence on Ted, more than most candidates' spouses (with the obvious exception of Hillary). What should we make of this?

Hmph, it's a good thing the cost of living doesn't rise to match the money we multi millionaires and billionaires make. Imagine paying hundreds of thousands for things like bread, milk and coffee.
We'd have to lay off the wage slaves instead of cutting our obscene pay packets.
