Overnight Open Thread (3-31-2016) - [] Edition

Quote of the Day

When all is said and done, Civilizations do not fall because of the barbarians at the gates. Nor does a great city fall from the death wish of bored and morally bankrupt stewards presumably sworn to its defense. Civilizations fall only because each citizen of the city comes to accept that nothing can be done to rally and rebuild broken walls; that ground lost may never be recovered; and that greatness lived in our grandparents but not our grandchildren. Yes, our betters tell us these things daily. But that doesn't mean we have to believe it.

Slaughter at the Bridge: The Colossal Bronze Age Battle That Is Unknown to History

Around 3200 years ago two large armies fought a pitched battle in Northern Germany near the Baltic Sea, possibly one of the largest ancient battles every fought. The armies were made up of full-time warriors who had traveled long distances to the battle site and used the best technology available at the time. Yet there is no record of it and it appears in no history book.

81 A typographical error is a simple mistake. It makes for good jokes.

Grammar and syntax are what thought is made of. It takes a special sort of person (I won't say "jerk," although the author managed to work it in there -- let me just say fucked-up loser and let it go at that) to have such a low regard for those he's communicating with that he forces them to decrypt his meaning. Not unlike getting stoned and expressing everything as "you know, man," it works fine as long as everyone in your communicating group has exactly the same mental content, but that's a continually decreasing denominator.

Yes, "disagreeable." That must be a bad thing. Because we want to agree with everyone, don't we? If you require others to expend extra effort to figure out what you're trying to say, why would you expect them to trust your skills in anything else? Sloppy language, sloppy thinking, and if you can't engineer a thought you won't be working on our cars or buildings. Now call me a Nazi.

So, evidently it's a thing while you're walking down the street to dash up between two random houses, hike down your trousers next to their trash cans, and take an explosive runny shit on their wall, wipe your ass with some McDonald's napkins you carry with you for the purpose, and drop the napkins in the runoff. 170 PSO2 anime is all right. It has its moments. Starts with kinda nothing guy Itsuki who is suddenly tapped by the high school council president, Rina, to become the vice-president and to play PSO2. She wants to prove to the school admin that gaming won't impact grades or such. So Itsuki, being newb, creates a character that looks like him and uses his real name. But then things pick up as he does adventure and level up while learning about ARKS, Darkers, NPCs, quests, and such. Itsuki's grades suffer because he becomes addicted. Rina chews him out. And there is a foreign transfer student whom everyone starts to call Ai-Ai-chan. Itsuki gets broadsided by finding out Orga-Cat, the cat-girl, is actually a guy and he meets others in RL whom he has adventured with and they become a group of companions who help each other out.

And Itsuki discovers that PSO is reality. Darkers do exist and they are looking for someone who can become the avatar for their leader Dark Falz.

is anyone open to help me figure out a problem? I made plans to put my
sons ashes where he would want them. My daughter is throwing a hissy fit
because I invited my ex's family who tried to help as much as they
could. She is angry since she cannot be there but doesn't understand
that I don't want to be alone. To give my daughter credit. she gave
birth to my granddaughter days after her dad passed and barely got to
day goodbye to her brother.

The family has been no help her dad's ashes are not dispersed as he wished but I don't control them.

I would suggest rescheduling for when your daughter can be there. I suspect your son would not mind the delay if he loved his sister.

Was your ex estranged from your son? That might be the cause of your daughter's pique. She might feel that if they couldn't make an effort to be in your son's life before his death, they shouldn't get the right to be around when people who actually loved him get to say goodbye.

And perhaps offer to go with her to the place where the ashes are dispersed later, when she is available, to lay a wreath or place a memorial marker so she can say goodbye.

Frankly back in 1992 Studio Tron released Compiler about the 2D world wanting to conquer the 3D world so it sent two programs out to do that - Compiler and Assembler. And of course, each of them could power up by inserting in the back of their necks special data discs.

Yes Kikuchi was massively influenced by the original Tron movie for this series though it does turn comedic because the programs are young women who find out they like the 3D world.

I have been charged with scattering ashes of departed family members before (with everyone in friendly accordance, no conflicts, no bad blood).

As I did so, I was startled to realize that "cremains" are essentially indistinguishable from what is found at the bottom of any hearth or firepit or wood barbecue.

If I had to keep everybody happy in terms of ash distribution, I might end up stretching the ashes a bit, with discreet additions. Some here, some there.

262 "James Brown has a lengthy criminal back to at least 2001, including three counts of attempted murder"

The musical James Brown, the "Hardest Working Man In Show Business" James Brown, at one point in later life, had been reduced to where his one-man record label was in a strip mall office building with a single shared bathroom.

There was some sort of goofy cosmic-muffin human-potential seminar being held in one of the connected offices, and the Godfather Of Soul took offense to the seminar participants using HIS restroom, and marched in to the middle of the proceedings with a loaded .357 revolver, and took them all hostage for a couple of hours while he ranted about the injustice and indignity of it all.

I have no use for that sort of silly nonsense, but wouldn't it have been worth the price of admission to spend years afterwards relating the story of once having been held at gunpoint by *the* James Brown?

I made a simple proposal last night. Let's just cut off all grants to any school/student at schools with a Foundation/Endowment worth more than $100k per enrolled student. They simply do not need it. Harvard has ~4500 students, that's over $7,111,111 per student[/i that they are sitting on.

267 Maet,

Don't know if you are reading this, but thanks so much for the article from Science magazine about the big Bronze Age battle. I love history and wanted to be an archeologist when I was a kid (funny thing, though, I have never seen an Indiana Jones movie!) I am actually considering doing a vacation trip someday to be an archeology intern at Montpelier, Madison's home in VA.

And to the horde ....

Thank you for being normal people. I have taken up a bad habit, which is wading into arguments with liberal women online (I am a woman, biologically, anyway, but i'm starting to question my gender identity after reading their ridiculous arguments... without starting a flame war here, I've read enough "hands off my body" and "what about the millions of incest victims" strawman arguments to last me a lifetime). I do what I can to change their minds, then despair for the future of our country, then come back here and realize that we aren't nearly as f*cked as I think we are.

272 Anyone moderately familiar with the economic history of the US would feel a chill on their back at just the headline of http://www.cnbc.com/2016/03/31/ dow-posts-biggest-quarterly- comeback-since-1933.html -- the Great Depression lasted from 1929 to 1939.

There was an economic depression from 1920-1921, but the government, wisely, did nothing at all about it and it fixed itself in about 2 years. The Great Depression kicked-off on Black Friday, 1929 -- and the government went all-in as being "the saviour of the People." So, when things got a little better in 1933, the Ruling Class in government felt vindicated.....until all the unintended consequences of their meddling began to surface, and the economy again tanked.

Misreading the significance of this, and inhaling their own brain-farts, the government doubled-down on meddling and ultimately extended a 2-year depression into the decade-long Great Depression.

Repeating 1933's gains is a horror story, not a fairy tale.

315 "I tried getting him a plane ticket, but he couldn't get through
security at the airport w/o drivers' license, which was in wallet inside

What fun!

There is a backup system of sorts. You can board a plane with a U.S. passport. Or you can also now get a "passport card" for a few additional bucks. Either as part of a first-time passport application, or piggybacking on top of an existing issued passport.

It has the same form factor as a credit card or driver's license. You can't get through most international checkpoints with a passport card, but it will suffice at any domestic Stateside airport.

So for someone who travels a lot, having one of those stashed separately from one's wallet or purse can be a huge help in such tough situations.

As part of the trip, we visited Col. Sander's grave. The wife is a huge fan of KFC. She still remembers "Corn and a cluck for a buck" from when she was a kid.

I am still milking the bonus points for taking her to the grave of her most favorite hero.

328 "Viking type invaders." Kind of, sort of, except everybody's in the wrong place, and the Vikes we'd recognize first come down almost 2000 years after this happened. It's really early -- right around the same time the Greeks (Hellenes I mean, because Greeks we'd recognize were just starting to show up) went over to Troy. It's not surprising there's no "history book," since almost nobody was using written language then. We only know about the Troy story because it was chanted and sung for several hundred years, then somebody took notes.

There are DNA types from all to hell over in those graves. Nobody lived, or came from, where we think of them being in later times. Now, a bunch of archies will embarrass themselves by importing modern notions onto what they think they are seeing, same as they've always done, and there will then be a whole generation of revisionism, that will go too far the other way. "Science."

The real point of the story is that the German state history club is out of grant money, and that's when you publish the papers you've got so far. I want to find out more, but I'd just as soon the UN doesn't step in and Culture it all up.

Did you see the part about how the bridge was 500 years old before they had the fight over it? Hammurabi was alive when that bridge was built. Damn.

But in all seriousness, to answer your question...oh the outcry from the local outrage lefties...sweet sweet outrage...why, you know Gov. Pat McCrory has been threatened with the dire outcomes of being voted out of office no less than three times by my count, and that's just by monitoring the folks I know on the book of faces, and all he did was sign the bill.

Which brings me to the next point...if you want to make a statement vote for the executive branch (President, Governor, etc), but if you want to make a DIFFERENCE vote for the legislature. Pay attention to your Congresscritter and Senator folks, they make the rules.

I suspect you are correct. I further suspect the pointy head academia nuts who postulated such a position need to have their brain housing groups re-aligned to the local reality.

From what I gather from mentions, there was a
600-year-old causeway/bridge there -- and, given the times, dollars'll
get you donuts that it was a toll bridge.

Toll bridges have a nasty habit of turning from pleasant convenience
to existential threat quite rapidly (as in, the northern bridge to a
town when attacked from the south).

Posted by: cthulhu at April 01, 2016 01:37 AM (EzgxV)

I don't know how rapidly, given the statement in the article that many groups from far flung areas came to join in the battle. That's why I'm thinking they were banding together to repel foreign invaders (AKA, The Others).

335 Some idiot in Sacramento (yes that doesn't narrow it down very much) said something about banning CA state employee travel to somewhere for a similar, idiotic "reason".

To which all 437 remaining functionally responsible citizen Californians responded, in their carefully concealed thoughts, "hmm, sounds good, WTF are our 'employees' doing traveling out of state on business anyway?".

I actually think the remaining American states should engage in similar grandstanding, with lots of mockery and sarcasm, by boycotting states that trample the constitution (NJ, NY, CA, IL - 2nd amendment), or have "sanctuary" cities.

It might not help, but it cannot hurt, to have the unhinged authoritarian alien freakshow that is half the country mocked and belittled, publicly.

336 I'll buy the idea that Beowulf was composed as a chanted poem, but it didn't go all that long before being written down. Keep in mind, Some Guy was still writing in the same language and poesy when Chaucer was writing things we can read.

Generally though, yes it was rare for any thing to get written down, except bills of lading and trade regulations. Oh, and Cicero's "defense of orphan" briefs. I imagine that to your typical working musician or tale-teller, writing it down just spoiled it. Not unlike these times, in a way.

Perhaps by then, she will be past some of the grief and all of the baby hormones. THEN you can talk to her about why you want to include extended family.

Please do not do anything in haste that will cause hard feelings with your remaining child... hurts caused after the death of a loved one fade exceedingly slowly if at all and I am very sure your son would not want that for you or her.

There seems to have been a lot of travel and trade going on in prehistoric times. I recall there were some mummified bodies found in western China a few years ago that had Caucasian features and red hair. I don't remember the time frame, but I think they were at least a couple thousand years old.

In a way, the Trojans were repelling Viking invaders. Then somebody overran Greece from the north, and, dark age. Lot of viking going on in those days.

It was probably climate change. Fertility went up, excess population, and all of a sudden people were on the move.

Also just watched the first episode of the new season of Archer. Having been completely drummed out of the freelance spy business, they're now making a go as Los Angeles private investigators. Maybe it's just me but I'm not feeling it anymore. Everything has gotten a bit too predictable in the characters' eccentricities and interactions. The last season ended rather in a way I found unsatisfying because Kreiger went nuts and created a disaster, yet nobody seemed to think this was a problem and they should all remain together.

Still have the last two episodes of Venture Bros. to watch. It has been so good up through #6 I'm almost afraid to watch them. Either they'll fail to find a good way to wrap up the arc or it will be really good and I'll go into withdrawals for lack of anything good to take its place.

Our modest proposal, then, is that the University of Chicago and similarly well-endowed private institutions should share their assets with Chicago State, Northeastern Illinois and other struggling public schools...

My modest counterproposal is that they fire your two worthless asses and put you out on the street to pursue employment commensurate with your putative knowledge of living on an economy's margins.

396 "Our modest proposal, then...." blah blah blah

The shorter version is always: You have money, I want it, so I'm going to make the government force you to share it.

This from a gender studies professor.

I have a family member who fundraised for a school mentioned the article. There's a group of their alumni who work on Wall Street, and when one of their school's graduates makes it big on Wall Street, they'll meet with him or her and tell them, "You've made it! You now have more money than you could ever spend. Why don't you give back our school like we did..."
I'm guessing none of these people got degrees in gender studies.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, April 01, 2016. On this day in 1970 left wing Republican President Richard Nixon signed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act into law, requiring the Surgeon General's warnings on tobacco products and banning cigarette advertising on television and radio in the United States, starting on January 1, 1971. This act passed by a Democrat Congress was, and still is, blatantly unconstitutional and like all Fascist laws passed in this time frame it has grown into far more mischief both in the tobacco area and branched out into other Fascist government control even to the point now where the federal government controls your child's lunch in local schools.

Since Vic is posting the news, I'll chime in with the entertainment section.

One problem with Hollywood / theatre story collections (especially ones from the 1950s and '60s) is that, while the stories are good, many times names are left out, leaving you to guess who the raconteur is speaking of. So in this story, you'll have to be content that the subject is, in the words of the author, "a Broadway producer who has a genius for feuding with six critics, eight stars and eleven authors and directors at the same time."*

It seems he was overseeing a new musical during its Boston tryout, and decided one certain number was no good. "Take it out," he ordered. "It's awful."

The composer and lyricist disagreed. "We think it's the funniest number in the show," they protested, and refused to slice the piece.

No dice. The number was cut. But the writers wouldn't leave the producer alone, each day pestering him to restore it. Finally, in exasperation, the producer allowed them to leave the song in when the show moved to Philadelphia tryouts. "I'm only doing this to shut you two up," he snarled. "The audience won't laugh once."

But as it turned out, the audience did laugh. In fact, they were literally rolling in the aisles. In triumph, the writers rushed to the producer and demanded, "Do you hear the audience howling?"

The producer glared at the two for a moment, then snapped, "They don't mean it."

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

*I happen to think - but can't prove - it was David Merrick.

on stories like this I find the best thing to do is find the locals big 4 TV stations and then try to reverse engineer where the local story goes.

Don't feel bad you do a great job, of the Richmond big 4 3 have memory holed the story without giving the shooter's data including Fox.

In THIS case CBS was the one who told the truth.

489 Tank of the day.

http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/gb/Infantry_Tank_Matilda_II.php

This was a monster tank for its time. Heavily armored and could survive multiple hits from tank and anti tank armament of the day. About the only thing capable of knocking it out from any distance was a Flak 88.

The Brits just didn't have enough of them in May 1940 to make a difference.

For WWII Buffs here is one engagement that these tanks participated in other than the North African Theater.

496 We are a NoVA family - so far the school board in my county has kept to the regular Virginia Studies curriculum, at least in elementary/middle school. They certainly don't whitewash (no pun intended) the state's history, but at least they aren't being one sided about it.

I'll say that I'm a Virginian By UHaul and when I made my home here I promised myself that if I had kids they'd grow up with a sense of pride and love for their home state, just as I have for mine. If the state is going to be an asshole about Robert E Lee, then I'll pick up the slack at home and make sure my kids have the true picture. And this is from a guy who was born and raised in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains.
