Trump: Nevermind What I Said About Punishing Women Who Get Abortions An Hour Ago. My Position Has Always Been Consistent. Reagan!

Okay then, so long as I know you're taking this Commander in Chief and Leader of the Free World thing seriously.

In all fairness to Trump, he doesn't care about policy and isn't very smart.

Pro-life groups are piling on Trump, because, well, he tends to destroy the viability of any position he holds.

I'm pretty upset that he's clowning up the immigration issue.

Really? Look, I like what Trump started to bring to the debate. Really did. He managed to put the GOP elites into a very uncomfortable spot. Loved it.

BUT, and this is a YUGE BUT, he has no real policy. I like the vision "Make America Great Again". But how? Saying it doesn't make it true.

Backtracking on comments you made mere hours ago does not make you look presidential. Especially when touching a third rail topic such as abortion.

For AOSHQ pointing this out to people does not make them a pro-Hillary For President site. If we aren't careful on who we put into the oval office, it will not be IF the USA burns, but how fast. And IMHO - either Shillary or Trump will burn have it burning like an inferno in record time.

77 said Jeanne Mancini, President of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund. "Being pro-life means wanting what is best for the mother and the baby. Women who choose abortion often do so in desperation and then deeply regret such a decision. No pro-lifer would ever want to punish a woman who has chosen abortion."

Well, that's totally retarded. If abortion were illegal (in some state, say) then all those participating in one - including the mother - are breaking a law and to be held liable for criminal charges.

Pro-lifers are fighting for the life of the fetus, not the mother. The mother has her life, already. She doesn't need anyone to fight for her right to live. The fetus is the one whose life is at stake.

Some people are making total dipshits of themselves in trying to rail against Trump. Trump's statement that mothers who try abortions would be liable is absolutely true. The idea that a mother can try to kill her baby - against the law - and is totally free to do so just says that such a law is a total joke.

I think these Trump-haters are going to start popping off from heart attacks, soon. They are really getting themselves so wound up ... WTFFF? Nutcases.

how is this nonsense? wasn't it the hope of Trump's secularist supporters that he'd romp in the election because he'd dump the vote-losing abortion issue?

Now it turns out he's taking a more extreme position than pro-lifers are comfortable with.

So how is this nonsense -- except in the sense it hurts a candidate you like?

96 My willowed comment from the last primary thread.

I have a new political theory. Its probably very old but I had not heard it before. I call it the Monty Hall theory. On Monty Hall with the choice of 3 doors contestants very rarely would switch from their initial choice when Monty opened one of the dud doors, but statistically they should have switched to increase their chances of winning from 1/3 to 1/2.

In politics once people have decided they like or in some cases dislike politician A, they cling to that choice. All politicians use this to try to appeal to "base" voters in primary and then win over the LIV crowd in the general, trusting that folks that voted for them in the primary are very very unlikely to switch sides come November.

This year I'm seeing politicians banking quite early that the folks that decided they like them are not going to change their minds regardless of what information comes out. Hillary with the classified emails for instance. Her voters are not going to be steered away from her just because she sold state secrets (yeah I know they have not released any hard evidence of that, but *I* think she did this as well as the pay to play stuff as Sec. of State)

And this dislike effect holds true also. If a primary is enough of a shouting match a party member can be so turned off of a candidate that they will not come back for the general but will leave that race blank, or vote a third party. Some will come around with a lesser of evils, some will not.

I'm an engineer and I'd like the world to be more rational but I know this won't happen. Sometimes I observe my own self acting irrationally and note it but follow my emotions anyway.

Morons, all of you.

Posted by: ReactionaryMonster Bravely supporting kittens at March 30, 2016 06:50 PM (uURQL)

205 I disagree, I think Mr. Trump is quite smart, he just has never had to intellectually immerse himself in an activity before to the level required, so had no concept. It's something I intuited a long time ago.

Running for office at this level has got to be like being an NFL quarterback, as far as the study and "academic" preparation involved--you can't just come out and call some plays like it is the annual family Thanksgiving touch football game in the front yard. You have got to know the plays, and the opponents, backwards and forwards. You can't wing it--Rick Perry showed that.

But I do think the man is intelligent. And of course, at some point, he takes so many positions that independent folks may not care what Dems hang on him, because they know they can't rely on Trump to stick to any one thing for long. He'll change, and tell you he was always that way. And they may be okay with that, if, like the hedgehog, he gets the one big thing right. I call it the "chaff, flare" approach--shove so much crap out there that eventually none of it stands out overly much.

Final random point-given the treatment of Fields, I think you would have to be a fool to go into a private meeting with Trump, without a neutral third party.

Posted by: Horatius at March 30, 2016 06:50 PM (J3UIw)

206 I am on board with the 'Trump is a terrible candidate' train, but FFS - look at what the Left is doing to stop him:

Actor-comedian Michael Ian Black has teamed up with the children's division of publisher Simon and Schuster to release "A Child's First Book of Trump," a parody children's picture book that will explore the "curious creature" that is the GOP presidential frontrunner.

They have no boundaries, no limits to what they will do, to take out a Republican or conservative boogeyman. They will attack Cruz or whoever is the GOP candidate just as hard.

given that something like 20-25% of women have had abortions, I think a lot of women might be a bit wary of voting for a candidate saying they should be thrown in jail -- after all, there's no statute of limitations on murder, if that's what you're saying it is.

If that's what you're saying it is, why shouldn't they take you at your word and vote for their own interest as far as not being thrown in jail?

I don't have a strong position on the claim being made here but some are either not thinking -- or are being willfully obtuse -- about the political ramifications of declaring that up to 25% of all women are now eligible for jail sentences.

Maybe if you really care about the issue, you should spend more time thinking about how to actually advance the issue, instead of just indulging in feel-good venting that spares no fetuses whatsoever?

Sometimes, an omnipotent force simply grabs a warrior from the battlefield - and those who remain cry "Ace" or "Maet".

Regardless of the scars I bear from the sights I have seen, I must continue. I must.

Look at the primaries -- I have won everything except where I was treated unfairly. 267 i way overstated my claim, myself. Obviously, you wouldn't actually be

question was deemed legal.

So it was dumb of me to claim that.

Ace, you know better, but it's not unreasonable to worry that 'women in the general voting population' don't. Certainly the political ads won't say so.

Still, I think people really think this way. And I also think that
many women are uncomfortable with their previous abortions being
branded, officially if not legally operatively, "murders."

There was a House member who actually gave a speech on the floor making precisely this point around a decade ago, I think. That even if we acknowledge abortion is murder today, we shouldn't do anything about it legislatively, because it might cause women who already killed their children to feel guilty about it.

I don't know. Maybe not. I've checked out of this thing, to a large extent. I honestly haven't looked at poll numbers for Wisconsin or Californica. It certainly WOULD be funny if Cruz has to rely on those ack bassward states to make headway. I still don't think two states are going to matter much. Even a big state like Cali.

It still can only end one of two ways: Trump is nominated or Gope picks the nominee, and if Gope picks, it sure as heck isn't going to be Cruz. You know that, right?

ace, the world of today is totally different from that of 1973. NO WOMAN gets pregnant unless she wants to or is totally irresponsible. With the number of methods of birth control around - and lefties handing them out free to 12 year olds - most of the arguments for the necessity of national abortion back in 1973 are no longer operative (and they made for a specious argument even back then). These days, women don't have to suffer any stigma for having a child out of wedlock. Birth control is everywhere and free for most. And women always have "the choice" to have sex, or not. And there are RU-486 and the like, now, too. Any woman who finds herself "needing" an abortion at any point past the first trimester is only in that position because she's a total fucking idiot.

If Roe is repealed - as it certainly should be - then some states will make abortion illegal and some won't. A woman will still never be more than a couple of hours away from a legal abortion. They even have easy access to Canada or Mexico if they don't want to go to a state where it's offered.

But, in the states in which abortion is illegal, those participating in one are liable for whatever penalties and punishments the law prescribes.

He'll have a different message. It really depends on how smart Cruz is in the four years after the election. I personally am not a purist. Blame the establishment and conservatives for not sufficiently supporting him.

This latter part has always been the problem. The complaints by the Trumpsters have merit; the problem is that they think Trump is the answer.

The GOP/conservatives/anti-liberal movement will be sent to the wilderness to fight it out while the liberals run things. It's the cycle of American history repeating itself. The conservative movement is spent and no longer offers much that the public as a whole wants.

What will emerge is anyone's guess.

Let's set that aside and go to your other "blue collar union" claim. In what bizarro universe are the union people going to turn out for Trump instead of Hillary?

All other disagreements aside, the fact remains that Trump has one demographic that he wins with. One. And he doesn't even win 50% of that demo. People consider themselves right of center enough to usually vote Republican but are pissed off about "all them damn Mexicans taking our jobs and rapin' white women!".

Democrats aren't crossing anywhere for him. He has lost over 60% of Republicans in every primary so far. I get why you're frustrated though, because I feel the same frustration. Things that would have sunk every other candidate aren't sinking Trump. (In the primary, at least) So this isn't really a retread of the nastiness from 2012, because if any of the 2012 candidates had copied Trump's litany of errors, they'd have been crushed in the primaries. Obviously I've managed to annoy Ace and several others here, but my position is fairly simple. I think Trump is going to win the nomination, so the stuff about how bad a candidate he is doesn't really register with me anymore.

Likewise the arguments FOR Ted Cruz. Ted Cruz isn't going to be the nominee. It's not even remotely possible, so I see no point in arguing FOR Ted Cruz.

Chemjeff gets angry because people don't want to argue on his terms. Well no, I'm not going to argue on his terms. They're irrelevant to me.

I'm only slightly more interested in the outcome, whether Trump wins or loses, but at this point I think we don't have anywhere near enough information to know what that's going to look like.

So as Ace suggests, people who want to skip over what I have to say, if they want to argue that stuff, yeah, it's probably safe to do so.

Trump is obviously establishment, as Cruz is obviously of the political class. What both these men offered is to betray their group. Both have did things that have been contradictory, but if they wished to remain in their groups then some capitulation was required. The big question is do you believe that either of them would actually betray, and this is what we've been fighting about.

True, your odds go from 1/3 to 2/3. You can sort of consider the open door 'yours' - it's taken out of play, and it gives you information you didn't have when you made your initial choice. But the simplest way to think about it is, well, your initial chance of picking the right door was 33% - by switching, you're getting the other 67%.

Heck, Trump was subpoenaed in relation to Jeffery Epstein and is on record with a reporter saying, "He's a great guy. He likes women as much as I do. He does like 'em young!"

But sure, let's all talk about the investigating the allegations of allegations by the NE.

Of course, Trump is going to overcome the massive flood of tabloid articles about him, documented adultery, and other negative crap that will come out 5 minutes after his nomination speech and he's going to paint the entire electoral map Reagan red by (quoting a commenter earlier), "calling Hillary a c**t on national TV".

Yup. That will work.

the next Trump, and there will be another. I even speculated in this
thread that it would be Cruz himself."

The GOPe isn't some monolithic evil league of evil. They're less organized than the Dems, and even the DNC doesn't have that level of control of their party. They won't even be able to swing 1000 delegates to give Rubio the nom, much less somebody who doesn't even have a campaign.

Cruz has the best organized campaign in the republican party right now--no question. The best ground game, the best delegate strategizing.

Trump's campaign is a joke. Kasich's is a straight up dumpsterfire.

The nominee will be Trump or Cruz, depending whether Cruz's better campaign can overcome Trump's delegate lead. Only way an outside candidate gets it is if Trump or Cruz backs their candidacy for some reason.

311 he Monty Hall theory. On Monty Hall with the choice of 3 doors

contestants very rarely would switch from their initial choice when

Monty opened one of the dud doors, but statistically they should have

switched to increase their chances of winning from 1/3 to 1/2.

This is still wrong.
---
You have a 1/3 chance of picking the correct door on the first try, and 2/3 of being wrong. You then have a choice to stay where you are or change after Hall removes a door that is certainly bad.

If you were right the first time, you are certainly wrong if you flip, so that's 1/3 chance flipping hurts you.

If you were wrong the first time, you are certainly right to flip, so that's 2/3 chance that flipping helps.

It's counterintuitive, but you are far better off flipping.

Thus, in many states, had Michelle been pregnant and Corey's battery caused her to miscarry, he'd be looking at murder charges.

But the simplest way to think about it is, well, your initial chance of picking the right door was 33% - by switching, you're getting the other 67%.

this problem can be more easily understood if you think about ONE HUNDRED DOORS.

You pick one. The prize is behind one door. It's not behind 99 other doors.

Now, you pick your door. The host says, "I can tell you the prize is NOT BEHIND these other 98 doors," and leaves one single door closed.

Do you switch now? OF COURSE YOU DO! Why? Because you have a huge amount of information. He's eliminated 98 possible doors, and left only one.

So, either you picked right initially, on a one in one hundred guess, or you picked wrong initially -- a 99% chance -- and the prize is 99% likely to be in the single unopened door.

The same thing happens with three doors -- all the probability of the opened door moves to the unopened door.

(It's also important to remember that Monty Haul is not guessing himself -- he knows which doors are losers and which is the winner. Thus his actions are not at random as yours was, but informed -- he's picking all the doors he knows are losers, and leaving only a door he know is a winner. (Except if you got lucky on your initial choice.))

320 forking branch analysis:

If you picked right -- which will happen 33% of the time - you win if you stand pat and you lose if you switch.

So, 33% of the time, switching is wrong.

If you picked wrong initially -- which will happen 67% of the time -- you lose if you stand pat and you win if you switch.

Yes, you might have picked right, but odds are, you picked wrong. Your odds are better if you switch.

That's the example I use as well. A lot of people have trouble understanding with 3 doors - everybody comprehends it when it's 100 doors. When it's as small as three doors, you have the illusion of a coinflip. Even 10 doors is usually enough for people to understand the core concept - if your initial choice was less than 50% likely to be correct, then you always improve your odds by switching.

To my ear, "Cruzer" sounds neutral. There was one 'ette who had the phrase "Keep calm and Cruz on" in her nick. I don't remember who it was. Both are just plays on "cruise", so they don't seem insulting.

Obviously, "Cruztard" or "Cruzbot" would be perjorative. I don't believe I've ever used any of them.

Look I don't know this Harun fellow -but I am sure he is not a winner. I don't have small anything. I have the greatest amount of self-control that anyone one has ever had. Look at my casinos -- I have tastefully kept my name to a minimum. My best casino -- its the "Trump Taj Mahal" not the "Trump Mahal". That took a hell of a lot of constraint not name it the "Trump Mahal".

But lets be honest, anyone else would have named it the "Trump Mahal" because its objectively greater and better than that crappy castle in the middle of nowhere in India. My dealers all wanted to re-name "Black Jack" as "Trump's 21" -- but I held back. That took a yuuge amount of self-restraint.

And I have that. I have more self-control than the Pope in a whore house (who is by the way, not a nice man).

If it was random, when Monty showed the door, one-third of the time it would be a winner, and you'd crap out at that point, but that never happens.

So you're real decision is after Monty opens the first door and eliminates one of the "A"s. You can keep your original pick or shift. It doesn't matter. Your odds were always one in two.

I don't deny that the "Establishment" exists. If conservative means "wishing for the destruction of a country from bad trade, mass illegal immigration, and crushing debt either deliberately or through constantly losing", than yes, Cruz is "1000x more conservative" than Trump.

And yes, that would make this a conservative blog. If you support the Corporate Class (major overlap with the Establishment), then I definitely understand your support of Cruz (and by extension, Hillary, because, let's face it, he's not beating her).

I agree with that part. I don't know what that word means anymore, and I doubt that 90% of the electorate does either. It just sounds like a buzzword, or shorthand for something that is only hazily defined if at all.

Calling Trump supporters (or really, anti-Establishment types) "Trumpkins" is a lot like Obama calling Tea Partiers "Teabaggers".

Trump doesn't know how to control himself and may be too thin-skinned & not disciplined enough to be POTUS. I watch every debate and townhall waiting for substance. Really want him to succeed. Want to be able to proudly cast my vote if he were the nominee, but instead I just cringe. He sounds more like a Democrat every time he opens his mouth.

Not me. Many women who have had an abortion (like me) have a change of heart afterward, often involving becoming a Christian. That what happened to me. And I face the fact that I murdered my child. Norma McCorvey (Roe; now a Christian), and Dr. Alveda King--both huge pro-life activists--accept the same about themselves.

Truth about one's sins is an essential part of being a Christian.

The conservative movement has been co-opted by the corporate/donor class. At this point, we either get a Trump to mix things up or we get a Hillary, and the whole thing goes down. The media will absolutely not let Cruz get away with his "Execute the gays" friends he's made. And Beck is not helping Cruz, either. My political calculus assumes, for the record, that Trump, Hillary, and Bernie are the only viable candidates running. Are any of them great? No. But if Trump connects the country's outcome to his personal reputation, we can assume that he'll at least try to do good. I will never vote for someone who has explicit globalist connections (e.g. Cruz, Bush, Goldman, etc etc).

It's why "infanticide" is still a law in Canada, from a time when male doctors thought the female psyche was so fragile that the pain of pregnancy and childbirth exculpated them from murder. Infanticide is lesser crime, and most don't even do jail time.

If the pro-life movement says that "abortion is murder" than the agents involved must then be murderers. But, it's been said before, saying the obvious can get you in a lot of trouble. The Left works very hard to get people to ignore the obvious around them. In fact, it's a trait of the leftist totalitarian governments.

380 "In all fairness to Trump, he doesn't care about policy and isn't very smart."

In all fairness to Trump, logical and consistent responses to abortion have not been what either pro-life or pro-choice pressure groups have developed, because their view of women as either can-do-no-wrong pedestal queens or identity politics member ruins all logical approaches to the issue. If you were an honest, serious, consistent reactionary rather than a servile political commentator with prior political commitments, of course you'd punish women who procured abortion services.

But by and large, men who should rightfully be patriarchal law-layer-downers on this issue are currently the most popular C-word, by and large, so Trump had to walk back to the stated position. Much like a great many things you complain ineffectually about, it's your fault for being weak, not his fault for being temporarily honest.

"Enjoy the candidate who's not only going to lose, horribly, but make a total mockery of your singular issue."

The fact that immigration isn't seen as YOUR issue is both why you keep losing and why no one on the Trump side cares about your opinion.

Baldilocks. Thank you. I am a woman who has been pro-life since I was young. I offered to raise the children as my own of friends contemplating abortions. It was never enough to change their minds, at the time. Some women I know who aborted their child had their own "WTF did I do" moments when they chose the next time to have the child. You are speaking what many people don't get to hear, that it's possible for people to realize what once was acceptable can change. Posted by: Gobbagoo at March 31, 2016 05:43 AM (H7eLj)

410 Trump's not wrong in his initial statement, but he stepped on a mine (or
pulled a pin on a grenade) on a majorly touchy social issue he normally
stayed away from. In this society, the right to an abortion is the
pinnacle of feminine/feminist power - the ability to murder your child
(over a father's objection) for practically any reason under the sun
(and not just medical rationales).

So Trump's basic, poorly
vocalized thought is: if you are going to make abortion illegal (which
conservatives apparently support), then you have to punish people that
obtain them (shudder!). So, that means the doctor performing the
abortion, the woman obtaining it, and anyone paying for it (aiding
abetting). That's just logical, rational common sense procedure for law
enforcement. See Pennsylvania's Crimes Against the Unborn Act, that
punishes ANYONE ELSE for doing what the mother does (like a punch to the
womb from a guy on the street), but exempts the mother and a doctor for
the same action. So if you "ban abortions" but have no enforcement
mechanism, then the ban is one in name only, and might as well not
exist.

This reminds me of illegal immigration. We used to punish
the illegal immigrant, then we decided to really only punish the
businesses that hire them, and now we don't punish either and we have
ever-increasing illegal immigration, all in violation of existing law.
So, obviously here comes the push to eliminate the law.

If both sides are operating successfully and profitably on the same hidden assumption, then the true answer is probably "They don't." Not in the same sense that men do, at any rate. So, given that both sides have operated successfully on the same hidden assumption, why the hell do you think that sniping at Trump for operating under the same assumption is a winning strategy?

After all, there are a lot fewer men capable of/bloody-minded enough to perform abortions then there are women willing to be pressured into it at any given time. And I guarantee you that "Paul Hill was right" will be a much, MUCH less unpopular position than "Women must take responsibility for their own choices", especially once the media and political apparatus surrounding Planned Parenthood is crushed.

Posted by: Dystopia Max at March 31, 2016 10:01 AM (61Gds)

412 391: I think Cruz is more electable than Trump. At least he thinks before he speaks. Yes , the media will savage him but I think he will be able to coherently defend himself. He may not be most likable but I do not think anyone can question his intelligence.

The primary issue is the potential result. If Cruz wins, I do believe he will at least attempt to restore some Liberty and limit government overreach. Donald Trump doesn't even act interested in reducing the influence the federal government has over every aspect of our lives. He simply believes massive centralized power is best handled by the right person, himself.

I was a Rand Paul supporter but republicans were too busy swooning for Trump.

Electability is important but so is the result. If the person who wins will not advance the causes we claim to give a shit about , it does not matter if he is elected. Trump could set the Republican Party back more than Dubya.

414 Let's dispel with this notion that Ted Cruz isn't fully aware he will have to win a general election.

Seriously, the "oh they'll treat him like Palin and he has no chance!" assumption, along with the one that Trump will overcome his not-quite-yet-rock-bottom unfavorables with the general electorate and fare far better than Cruz in a general, require ignoring how smart as a whip Cruz is, the quality of campaign he's run thus far, and how awful Trump is at being a candidate who has to answer candid questions and explain his positions.

Sad!
