Trump Campaign Manager Yanks Female Breitbart Reporter Almost to the Ground; Trump Campaign Denies; Witnesses Support the Reporter

Michelle Fields relates her version of the incident at Breitbart:

Even if Trump was done taking questions, Lewandowski would be out of line. Campaign managers aren’t supposed to try to forcefully throw reporters to the ground, no matter the circumstance. But what made this especially jarring is that there was no hint Trump was done taking questions. No one was pushing him to get away. He seemed to have been happily answering queries from my fellow reporters just a moment before.

Many people have been asking me on Twitter and in emails what exactly happened Tuesday night. I hope this article answers those questions and I can get back to reporting the news, not being a part of it.

A Washington Post reporter, Ben Terris, says he witnessed the event, and backs Fields' account:

As security parted the masses to give him passage out of the chandelier-lit ballroom, Michelle Fields, a young reporter for Trump-friendly Breitbart News, pressed forward to ask the GOP front-runner a question. I watched as a man with short-cropped hair and a suit grabbed her arm and yanked her out of the way. He was Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s 41-year-old campaign manager.

Fields stumbled. Finger-shaped bruises formed on her arm.

"I'm just a little spooked," she said, a tear streaming down her face. "No one has grabbed me like that before."

Breitbart released a short statement in the name of Larry Solov:

It's obviously unacceptable that someone crossed a line and made physical contact with our reporter. What Michelle has told us directly is that someone 'grabbed her arm' and while she did not see who it was, Ben Terris of The Washington Post told her that it was Corey Lewandowski. If that's the case, Corey owes Michelle an immediate apology.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks denies the event took place, and questions the truthfulness of Fields:

Fields has posted a picture of her forearm, showing bruising consistent with a hard grab:

Breitbart has now issued another press release:

Breitbart.com obviously likes Trump a heck of a lot. And look how Trump is repaying that -- by essentially humiliating them, not acknowledging at all the goodwill that Breitbart should have amassed with Trump.

Breitbart asked for the most minor of concessions that would save its own face (they have a responsibility to protect their reporters), and Trump responded by calling the reporter's truthfulness into question, and calling into question a previous claim of having been hit with a police baton.

This requires Breitbart, in return, to issue another press release.

I imagine Team Trump's next move will be to demand Michelle Fields apologize to "Mr. Trump."

Trump doesn't seem to care about how he treats his strong allies. Humiliating them, making them appear impotent.

Something to keep in mind, going forward. It's not just his opponents he treats contemptuously -- it's his allies, too.

Note that all Breitbart asked for was the most minimal of concessions -- an apology. They didn't demand the firing of this guy or anything.

They asked for something minor and perfectly reasonable, and the response was to... go to war against a Breitbart reporter, basically.

Anything that could hurt "Mr. Trump's" brand must be destroyed.

I realize that there's a lot of support for Trump on the basis of his ill-treatment of the press and protesters (often the same thing), and of refusing to concede an inch to anyone, on anything.

But there's a dark side to that. Protesters are annoying but they shouldn't be handled roughly or hit. Reporters are annoying but they shouldn't be grabbed and yanked, almost to the ground. (Not that it matters, but this reporter turns out to be one for the Trump-friendly Breitbart.)

And the problem with never conceding an inch anything is that it sometimes looks less like tough confidence and more just like shabby lying and excuse making.

that's what i'm thinking. and sure, it's hypocritical. Yeah, I liked when he tossed out Jorge Ramos (but that wasn't done roughly, or at least no one's alleged that).

But here's a pretty light-framed girl asking Trump a question, and she gets yanked back off balance.

All Breitbart wanted was an apology. Such a trivial thing. But no, they have to start attacking her.

Trump doesn't seem to care about how he treats his strong allies. Humiliating them, making them appear impotent.

Trump seems ignorant of who supports him and why they support him. I really believe Trump has no idea why he's leading in the polls. It's all about Trump the man and nothing else and no one else.

Trump's campaign is very much like a WWF storyline in which he plays the up and coming champion defeating all who challenge him.

Also, Trump is a crowd pleaser. Trump loves whoever he is speaking to at the moment, and goes out of his way to shun whoever is not in the presence of his glory. When he's addressing a crowd, he mocks his fans who couldn't enter the building. When Trump does interviews, he's best friends with the interviewee and treats them like lifelong pals, even if it's Cris Matthews. But then goes on Hannity and Trump will shit on Matthews.

103 Simple question. Should Trump apologize, or not?

Yes.

Now what?

---------

We wait and see if he does. Or if he forces his campaign manager to apologize. This is bad, but its not fatal to Trump. But a lack of a Trump response that is anything but an apology will further convince the non-trump supporters that he should not be President. And it will probably further convince his supporters that see this is why he should be president - he's so anti-PC. Which will further convince us that his supporters are becoming more and more cultish.

But I'll wait to see what happens. And no I don't think this will matter in terms of the election very much.

This whole thing smells to me. I could not care one bit if a young, female reporter got brushed aside and got a slight bruise. The breakup of press briefings and stuff is when folks get shot and if you dally to take questions instead of meaning. we're done, goodbye, you just invite more press to do this everytime.

The reporter in question I know little about but her BF works for NR, anti-Trump-Central. The Wa-Po is NOT a Trump friendly outlet, so I wouldn't put a dime on the back-up witness either.... BECAUSE... they all have an agenda.

The press corps admits it, every day. If she got hurt, file a complaint. This is not a college classroom where you can't get touched. This is insipid and has an air of being blown waaaaay out of proportion. AM I that out of line?

There should be lots of video, and lots of eyewitnesses, and they have yet to appear.

I'll be interested to see how it plays out. Right now, it's impossible to say who will have to apologize. But I'm certain of one thing: if it turns out that the Trump-haters have wishcasted this into a Major Event when it didn't deserve to be, there will be no apologies of any kind from them.

182 This goes to Trump directly. Lewandowski has a lot of experience. He would never do something like this intentionally, and he I'm surprised anyone had to ask for an apology. A good reporter, preferably large and male, should corner Lewandowski and ask why he didn't publicly apologize, and if Trump told him he could not. This could cause more trouble than knocking down the reporter.

Yeah, clueless. That branding Bush "low energy," that was some happy accident, huh. And then there was the time Trump skipped out on the Fox debate when they had that leftist "YouTube celebrity" teed up for him. Lucky, that! But then it happened again at CPAC. Whew, dodged another bullet. Then there was the dumb idea to start doing press conferences after the primaries. 45 minutes uninterrupted on three news nets. Wow. Do you bruise like that whenever someone grabs you? Just wondering. I've grabbed lots of people in my day but never left a bruise that I'm aware of, not even from forcefully yanking a child out of oncoming traffic. Perhaps the eyewitness' account of her stumbling had something to do with it?

I agree, their should be some sort of apology and explanation, but this is pretty small potatoes. Why did they tweet about it when if it was an issue they could have reported it to the police. Maybe because there are penalties for false reporting, but not for tweeting. Seems like what is needed is an objective third party witness account of the incident or video evidence.

I'll be interested to see how it plays out. Right now, it's impossible to say who will have to apologize. But I'm certain of one thing: if it turns out that the Trump-haters have wishcasted this into a Major Event when it didn't deserve to be, there will be no apologies of any kind from them.

Posted by: MrScribbler at March 10, 2016 04:13 PM

Agreed. I'm just a little surprised at the jump by ace + pretty much 95% of the commenters here to just trust the word of a reporter at the Washington Post. Since when have we *ever* trusted nothing but the word of a liberal reporter on anything?

There is no video, there are no pictures and the victim of the 'assault' did not see who grabbed her. So based on the account of Michelle Fields, the story is "someone grabbed my arm and yanked me back from asking Trump a question and now I have bruises". That's a non-story.

BUT! Now Ben Terris from the liberal Washington Post says that it was Trump's campaign manager and BOOM, instant story.

This just smacks of liberals claiming things were said at McCain/Palin rallies or said at Trump rallies, when there's no video or recordings to prove it, just the word of the liberal reporter.

When that stuff happened to their campaigns, we all said "Whatever, unless you have proof, I call bullshit." But here?

I get we want to take down Trump, but to believe this story based on nothing more than the word of Ben Terris? Pretty ridiculous.

That said, I think the Trump campaign could have ended this story with a simple statement along the lines of "We are disappointed that Miss Fields was injured by someone at our campaign rally, but it was not done by anyone from our campaign and I would urge caution to those believing the word of a reporter from the liberal media working to take us down."

The unfortunate thing is that a simply apology, even an "I didn't mean to ... " or whatever would have sufficed. Now it's a story. It's very unfortunate. And, worse, is to see all of the Trump supporters defending assault of a woman. I'm flabbergasted.

443 People who are saying it's no big deal and it isn't the Holocaust. There's a wide range between light touching and bashing in someone's skull, including violent and nonviolent acts.

I had a very close friend whom I love very much. In a heated argument, he used his hand to turn my face towards him in a very rough manner. It felt like a light to medium slap. He had been enraged. It may have actually been meant as a slap,I don't know. The result was that my face was made to face him. . That was completely unacceptable to me, even if he didn't mean it as a slap. I felt it. He refused to apologize and we have not spoken since.

He said it wasn't a big deal since it must not have hurt, like he was the one who was hit. Um, no.

I'm not even angry at him, but we are no longer friends.

So mishandling a person, even if it doesn't cause a lot of damage, I'd not ok.

I think too the report and Shapiro might have tried back channels before making this a big public to do. I didn't say there wasn't. It could very well end up with a ruling to pay the young lady $5.

As a crime it would depend on the jurisdiction. Likely a misdemeanor battery, or maybe even just a civil infraction. Again, if the local authorities cared to pursuit it the whole thing would result (in my opinion) with a small fine and costs.

Blowing this out of proportion only proves that political passions are running hot.

498 Still wondering how there is no video of this. Was there a "No Cellphones" rule in effect or something?

Posted by: Lincolntf at March 10, 2016 04:58 PM (2cS/G)

499 I absolutely do. A lot of medications will cause easy bruising, even taking a few Advils will do it.

I am not defending the guy, but he could very easily left bruises just grabbing her to get her out of the way, especially if he was pissed. My husband and brothers have bruised me just horsing around.

Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at March 10, 2016 04:51 PM (CNKtx)

But if someone bruises that easily then bruises are evidence of nothing but minor contact - what most people would even consider normal contact.

The "eyewitness" said that the crowd was being cleared at the time and I have no problem with pulling and pushing reporters out fo the way in such clearing. It's not as if being pushed and pulled isn't part of many reporters' jobs. Look at how they push and shove each other to get to the front for a question.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at March 10, 2016 04:58 PM (zc3Db)

500 This is my concern. Nobody sane will consider this proof that Trump is some would-be tyrant, but the problem is Trump has all these guys working for him. His big draw for me was professionalism, hiring quality workers, and replacing the host of radicals and equal opportunity hires at the White House with people who can actually do the job well. If he can't even hire sane and capable campaign staff, that doesn't encourage the idea he'll do so when in office.

Not by the Insane Trump-Hate Posse.

They have embellished this story in garlands of bullshit, and certainly have a lot more vitriol stocked up to carry it on and on and on and on....

The facts are not in. Not even close. So far, what we can truthfully say is that someone grabbed the reporter's arm while she was at a Trump rally. One person claims to know who grabbed her. No video or other witnesses have come forward.

Everything else is supposition.

But silly little things like "facts" will not deter the Trump-Haters.

The Mosul Dam is a two-mile-long barrier that can hold back as much as 441 million cubic feet of water, and if breached, half a million Iraqis could be at risk.

In the event of a breach, there is the potential in some places for a flood wave up to 45 feet high that could sweep up everything in its path, including people, cars, unexploded ordnance, waste and other hazardous materials, US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power said.

It is expected that the entirety of the city of Mosul would be flooded within four hours of a breach.

561 >> What principle does Cruz exercise by attacking Trump
>> followers as "low information" and not "engaged"?

The same accurate and honest one that Romney exercised with his remark about the leeching 47%.

There are some who would argue that Trump's voter base is every bit as credulous and foolish as those who voted for Hope and Change in 2008 and even worse in 2012.

I'm not quite so cynical as that. I think that, should he win, he would understand the seriousness of what he's undertaken and actually try to do the job well. I believe he's at least somewhat more serious about the Presidency than was, say, that Schwarzeshithole about his governorship out here, and we'd know very quickly from his Cabinet appointments - personnel is policy, this is where Bush 43 failed so badly - whether that's true.

But I believe the most important issue this country faces right now is not immigration (that's #2) or the traditional post-WWII adversaries expanding their reach (that's #3) or the Muslim masses capturing Europe, but the scope and overreach of the Federal bureaucracy. And I think Ted Cruz is better suited by training and temperament, more reliably, to dismantle that.

564 Uggh. Just one more of hundreds of reason to loathe Trump--his followers making excuses for this. If someone grabs my arm from behind and pulls me down it had better be because a drone was about to hit my head, or else it's fucking assault.

Posted by: stace at March 10, 2016 05:13 PM (ozZau)

565 It could have been one of those non-apology apologies. "I didn't mean to ... " or even "If I did ... it was an accident." Honestly, the incident is less of a concern to me than watching so many Trump supporters act like assaulting a woman doesn't matter as long as it was just a little bit.
Posted by: gm at March 10, 2016 05:09 PM (4ueYo)

Non-apology apologies are Politically Correct.

Whose Correctness are you kneeling to? And do we want Trump kneeling to that?

The standard I'm seeing championed here is - female allegation! Submit!

There's been a lot of trouble in our modern society based on that exact default behavior.

I am not meaning to badmouth the reporter, just saying that a strong, grown-ass man who'd pissed off can leave a bruise pretty easily.

And of course he ought to realize that.

I'm following what I was taught. If I hurt someone, intentional or not, I apologize. Lessons learned in kindergarten. Doesn't have to be a big deal.

And, why do I wish that he had apologized? Well, for starters, so I didn't have to see how many Trump supporters think that it's okay to hit a girl as long as she's not hurt "too bad."

I don't think there's a huge difference. I don't think my parents would have bought the argument "that I didn't HIT her, I just tried to YANK her to the ground" when I was in kindergarten either. I probably would have been doubly busted for 1) hitting a girl, and 2) being an idiot.

But, whatever.

"This person claims she does not want to be part of the news, and only report it, however if that was the case, any concerns, however unfounded they may be, should have been voiced directly first and not via twitter, especially since no other outlet or reporter witnessed or questioned anything that transpired that evening."

- Trump campaign statement statement

Is it true that she went to twitter for public attention rather than asking for a private apology?

Because if you haven't noticed, public apologies are not an end to the matter in the public arena. They are fuel for the beginning of a witch hunt.

"Your campaign manager has publicly apologized for roughing up an attractive young media reporter. Why haven't you fired him yet? Do you hate women?"

596 Trumps ego is immense , he has to arrange things so he can claim to be a winner. So when he loses alaw suit against a reporter twice (for claiming his net worth was less than a billion) then that never happened . When he went bankrupt and his investors lost everything , and his vendors too , he claimed he won. When he settled the law suits in which he defrauded purchasers out of their deposits in Trump towers Tampa and Trump Ocen resorts Baja he claims he never ever settles. The man cannot ever ever admit he lost . Or that he has stumpy fingers . He cant admit his campaign manager is a thug because it reflects poorly upon Donalds great judgement .

598 Possible that the reporter stumbled and the campaign guy grabbed her so that she didn't fall. So far I only find that ONE reporter, for a different org, identified Trumps CM as being there when the woman stumbled. SHE didn't call the dude out, she relied on second hand "info". Are there others/ I saw a tiny vid of Trumps exit, and nothing like that was going on. I am sure there are more vids?

The campaign was caught off-guard because the woman made the accusation via media PRIOR to reaching out to Trumps campaign.
