Okay Tuesday: Late Thread

The supreme irony is that Rubio and his enablers, who want a contested convention, are actually going to end any chance of a contested convention by playing spoiler to Cruz and electing Trump on the first ballot.

You can't have a contested convention when you're running as Trump's bodyguard.

Rubio is at 1.5% in Mississippi. He loses more often than not to Kasich for fourth place. I'm not saying there's justice in it, but those are the facts: Rubio is less relevant to the race than Kasich is, and Kasich is himself irrelevant.

It's time for people to decide if they seriously wish that Trump should be defeated, or if they're just playing a game to become his Surprise VP pick.

Or, as Rubio would say: "The map really gets good for us from here on out."

Question: Can Republicans get over their personal drama with Ted Cruz to put country first? -- David French, via Twitter

Answer: Probably not. It's a combination of dislike for him on superficial grounds, plus the idea that if he likes Jesus he must be some kind of super-duper wacko social con (he's not; can we escape this religious bigotry even in the GOP?), and this bizarre Pepsi Generation Cult of Personality built around the flimsy persona of Mario Romo.

Idaho and Hawaii coming up.

I've got some hopes for Idaho. Hawaii, I figure, actually, will go to Rubes or Trump.

Honestly, it's in Trump's best interest to keep Rubio and Kasich around as long as possible. Talk them up, congratulate them, encouraging them to continue their march. Maybe donate a few million. As long as Cruz as to split votes with Simon and Garfunkel, Trump walks away with it.

Trump's celebrity.
Anti-establishment feelings.
Immigration fears.
Obama's record.
Scalia passing away.
People who just want to win.
Fears about Trump.
Conservatives looking for a place to go.
Moderates wondering wth the party is doing in washington.
The party backing Jeb, then Rubio.
The party's antipathy of both Trump and Cruz.
Possible dem shenanigans.

Ace has always struggled with basic math.
Even if Rubio wasn't running, most of his votes would go to Kasich, not Cruz.
And if Trump wins FL and OH, then Cruz nomination dreams end there. And the only way of Trump not winning FL and OH is if he loses them to Rubio and Kasich.

Every other scenario is nothing but poppycock from the fanatic or the functionally illiterate.

143 Notwithstanding Ace's little emotional tirade earlier .... Cruz's problem tonight was not Rubio at all. Rubio didn't even campaign in Michigan or Mississippi -- and had the flu at the debate and all last week.

Given Romney's speech, Rubio's signals were pretty clear that people just vote for Ted in Mississippi.

The problem is that there are voters out there that just don't want to vote for Cruz. In Mississippi, Kasich is at nearly 10% despite not campaigning.

I don't think it's over for Ted .... but he really, really needs to massage his image and his message to appear to voters beyond devout Evangelicals.

255 "Trumpers gonna trump"

I don't like trump personally but became a PolitcalFanBoy several months ago after my early picks flamed out. I'm a Bronx kid who grew up with NYC tabloids and so have long known Trump to be an extremely gauche egotistical self promoter in a town filled with gauche egotistical self promoters. I used to actually dislike this guy based on reputation.

What's changed is that I now believe that Trump is driven more by patriotism than ego. He really does wants to fix things. YMMV.

His politics are those of the bridge and tunnel crowd of NYC, which are mine. Nationalistic, conservative depending how you define it, some of us religious some not, but tolerant always, and socially libertarian.

What changed my mind months ago is when I saw how Trump can play modern media in the political arena. He's a prodigy. This is critical right now. Just win, baby! No other candidate can expand the electoral map the way that Trump can.

There have been many surprises in this cycle, with more to come, but to me the biggest so far -- one I never would have predicted -- is how an uber-NYC figure like Trump could win the South including by splitting the Evangelical vote with Cruz who banked so much on winning it..

Trump is a Democrat?!?

Are you seriously suggesting that Trump is secretly loyal to the Democrat party? Absurd.

Trump isn't loyal to any party. Trump is loyal to Trump. He's out there playing the game, just like they all do.

Do you think George Bush, that idiot, really gives a shit about the Republican party? Bush, Romney, etc., they are all users.

So please save your delicate ideological sensibilities.

386 How, exactly, is Donald going to kill the GOPe and the DEM MSM?

I guess if this guy is gonna win everything, we might want to talk specifics.

How will he get legislation passed? If both parties despise him, what then?

How will he get a wall bill through congress?

What if he immediately cuddles up to the Democrats and starts passing more liberal bills with their support? He was a registered Dem from 2001 to 2009. Donated to all the bogeyman on their side

I'd love to actually understand this because I'm quite concerned he's likely to be the most ineffectual president in modern history based on the current situation. It's one thing to get him elected.

When Rubio loses, he's going to cry. He's going to wonder what happened to us. It actually makes me sad, but if he doesn't believe me when I tell him I meant it about amnesty, we'll just have to go our separate ways.

394 Just a question, but was trump supposed to win Miss. and Michigan tonight, or was it a surprise?

Posted by: donna at March 08, 2016 11:00 PM (/dSsq)

395 I really think the vast majority of candidates in the initial Republican field this year were just there at the behest of the GOPe, to split the conservative/ grassroots vote, keep a candidate favored by those voters from gaining traction, and ultimately deliver the nomination to yet another Bush (Jeb).

Some were there just to win their home states and deliver those delegates to the anointed one of the GOPe.

Lindsey Graham was just there to keep some "unapproved" candidate from winning South Carolina, for example. Kasich got in just to deliver Ohio to the GOPe, and Rubio got in just to give Jeb a mulligan on Florida.

Rand Paul was there just to draw libertarian votes nationwide before ultimately delivering his delegates to the GOPe and Jeb, and Carly Fiorina was there to draw SoCon votes in the same way.

Huckabee and Santorum? Hell, running for President every four years is just how they make their living. They're a known quantity to the GOPe, and they can both hoover up a good chunk of the SoCon vote.

Which brings us to Texas. Rick Perry and Ted Cruz were both there just to keep some outsider from winning all of Texas's delegates. Perry dropped out early, because it was clear he would not have the needed impact. Cruz ultimately succeeded at keeping the grassroots' preferred candidate from winning Texas, and for this, the GOPe is now prepared to line up behind him just to keep someone they can't ultimately control from winning the nomination outright.

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but Ted Cruz is GOPe. For all his "brave stands" on the floor of the Senate... when Mitch McConnell and his deep-pocketed donors need Ted Cruz to vote a particular way, Ted Cruz ultimately votes that way.

Cruz might later make excuses for that vote, saying McConnell lied to him or something like that, but it's all kabuki. Failure Theater.

In which Ted Cruz doesn't actually have to persuade anyone because they are defective or bigoted if they don't vote for him.

The dislike for him by many is that rather than appearing as a principled stand, his filibuster etc. came across as grandstanding and self indulgent. He's also pretty unanimously thought of as a jerk by those who know him best.

But just in case that's not enough, one might also just be a religious bigot...you know who's not voting for him in nearly the expected numbers? Evangelicals...who knew they hate the religious too?!

I'm convinced that he's the only one to stop Trump now that Rubio has cratered post Super Tuesday.

I hope if his advisors and the pollsters think it will help carry FL for Cruz that Rubio drops out and endorses him.

But to paraphrase someone on Twitter today though, the "Fuck you, your guy lost" approach isn't helping win over voters.

Trump switched registrations a few times. 1987 he was an R. Then in 1999 he was registered as Independence Party. It appears that he was registered a D in 2001. In 2009 he was a Republican. In 2011 he was unaffiliated.

In 2012 he was a Republican again.

Principle? Standing with the guy you agree with the most even though he is behind? Does the fact that he may be behind in delegate count mean that I agree with him less?

If Trump is foreordained, he can do it without my vote in the primary.

That brings up another question, if Trump is so bullet proof, why even bother evangelizing for him in the primary? Worry about our immortal souls?

492 #451: They don't have to like him just because he's one of them. Just watch; they will support Cruz over Trump.

Mitt Romney just urged Republicans everywhere besides Ohio and Florida to support Cruz, for example. He just wants to split the overall vote and force a brokered convention where Romney will oh-so-magnanimously accept the nomination if that's what it takes to keep Trump from winning.

He said he's going to get Congress to work with him, didn't he? You asked what Trump is going to do to the GOPe. I answered. So if they're going to try to stop President Trump from doing all that stuff, who won't they do that to, and what the hell does that have to do with Trump? Who by the way promises to work with Congress and gets booed by many roundly for it. Then they boo him for thinking he can go above them.
Besides if President Bambi can shutter coal plants via onerous EPA regulation and EO's, President Trump can neuter the EPA and/or stuff it with people a hell of a lot more sensible about energy, no?

Posted by: Mega at March 08, 2016 11:25 PM (JwLCI)

494 "When all you have is Cruz by a wishful 2% in Idaho"

Yep, because the nomination (and later, the election) is totally going to turn on the results in Idaho. Totally.

If Trump wins every delegate tonight, which he won't even come close to doing, he will have 528 delegates. He needs 1,237. Many of the later primaries are going to be large closed primary states, where Cruz has been spanking the shit of Trump so far.

Math isn't your strong suit, either, is it?

Posted by: That's Horus not Whore Us at March 08, 2016 11:27 PM (eT0Ip)

495 Why would Kasich or Rubio think they might be picked for VP? If Trump is consistent about anything, it's not liking losers, and those two are getting beaten badly. They don't have enough delegates to get his attention, and aren't liked well enough by the party to help him with unification.

No, it must to act as a spoiler to force convention. What they think that'll mean for them, I'm not sure, but it's the only explanation.
