He says both of these frequently, most recently saying he wants to improve SS and Medicare in the last debate before last night, when directly asked. He used it as a way to contrast himself with Cruz, in fact.

It might help you greatly to look at it in a historical context, rather than doom doom doomy doom.
The debates are a relic of the past and are largely seen as such. Political junkies watch them only sometimes, most of the population do not.
I think the closest imperfect parallel is 1960, JFK vs. Nixon, though. In that debate the ones who heard it on radio thought Nixon won while the ones who saw it thought JFK won. It was the first election that TV played a decisive role.
We're now in a cauldron where TV+Internet is the major factor. First election that mattered in was Obama but that still wasn't fully exploited at the time. For the GOP it has not played a major role until now.
So you really do have to sit back and reflect on what the various camps are seeing through their screens. Where do they go, what language do they use, or is used against them. Why are the voters as wound up as they are.
Personally, I believe the GOP and the Pundit class have *badly* mismanaged every aspect of this dynamic for this cycle, and perhaps going forward for about a decade.

Nah, Christie was already defeated at that point. His shtick is kind of a Trump-Lite act, and with the big kahuna there, his act was non-impressive and he never got much traction.
Him and Trump had already worked out a deal of sorts and he took out Rubio to help. He already knew he was done, may as well get into the likely winner's good graces and angle for a cabinet position.

That assumes two things: 1) A Facebook post from two weeks ago really represents a change in Trump's position of decades, and 2) he wouldn't (perhaps even willfully) allow himself to be convinced that as long as PP swears it doesn't use the public money for abortion, but for the supposed good stuff that he can't help but mention ad nauseam, that's an acceptable compromise deal.

Well, as a practical matter, any approach to the illegal immigrant problem that features "self-deportation" is also going to entail a de-facto "touchback amnesty". How could it be otherwise? If an illegal has been living in the country for X number of years, and never had any interaction with government agencies under his own name, and then leaves of his own volition, it's as if he never existed at all. So there's no reason he could not apply to immigrate under his own name, since there's no adverse record under that name in U.S. gov't files.
I guess you could call the above scenario the "weak form" of touchback amnesty, as it requires no positive declaration on the part of the U.S. government to be in effect.
And I could posit a "strong form" of touchback amnesty, wherein illegal aliens would be given a preferred place in the queue in exchange for coming out of the shadows, admitting their illegal status, and then self-deporting. That would be wrong, and eminently unfair to all legal immigrants, both past and future.

Not sure how many here understand that according to our immigration laws, if someone is caught here as an illegal, whether it was sneaking in or overstaying a visa, even if we deport them, our laws permit them to reapply for a visa or reentry. They have to wait a predetermined number of years( I think it is five) before they can reapply, but they are not barred from ever reentering the USA.
Trump is not proposing something new. He is simply proposing that we actually enforce the laws on the books. And stop making up excuses as to why we cannot deport or enforce the laws.

Nah, there's no payoff unless it's putting Christie on the VP short list if Trump takes the nomination. Trump and Christie have been friends for decades. I knew about it/read about it a few years ago. Trump has done a tremendous amount of business in NJ over the years.He and Christierun in the same circles. Mary Pat and Melania are close friends--as strange as that might seem when you visualize the two of them together. Mary Pat isn't exactly what you'd call an attractive woman, although she's said to have a quick mind and a great personality (not being facetious).
That said, I wonder if Trump makes 'Look at that face!' remarks whenever he encounters Christie's wife.

True enough. But remember, government is already big. Yuuuge, even. Turning it to work "for" us, instead of against us, might be a more attainable goal than immediately trying to reduce its size. Because if you attack government directly, not only do the OTHERS rebel, because they see their bennies being snatched away, but the vast drones of government workers also will fight you, because careers, pensions, etc.
Get control of the levers of government, fire some of the most obnoxious socialist ideologues in the ranks of the civil service, and then let attrition run its course.
